DIRECTOR’S NOTE

ANA, MON AMOUR is a story about a man’s struggle to find out how the unseen, the unspoken, even the unthought shaped his life.

“I think it’s important you understand what kept you with Ana.” Toma is told during a therapy session.

The film doesn’t deal with the erosion of Toma’s relationship with Ana, but rather with the actual impossibility of properly building a relationship. The lovers behave like communicating vessels in physics; they flow into each other with their own unfulfilled needs. They are caught up deeply in what psychoanalysis calls transference: the redirection of existing feelings and desires towards a new object.

The truth always finds a way to survive its denial.

THE DIRECTOR

Calin Peter Netzer was born in 1975 in Petrosani, Romania. His first feature film MARIA (2003) was screened in prestigious festivals, won awards in Locarno (Special Prize of the Jury and the Bronze Leopard) and it was nominated for the EFA Awards. His second feature, MEDAL OF HONOR (2009), was selected in more than 30 festivals and awarded in Thessaloniki, Turin, Miami, Durres, Los Angeles and Zagreb. CHILD’S POSE (2013) received the Golden Bear at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival and is the only Romanian feature to have won this award. With his most recent feature, ANA, MON AMOUR (2017), Netzer returns to the Official Selection at Berlinale.

ANA, MON AMOUR

Toma meets Ana while they are both studying literature. Ana has a mild neurotic disorder and suffers from panic attacks. Toma follows her to every dark corner she ends up in, he fights his parents when they reject her, finally accepts being a father and marries her, becoming her babysitter, her driver, her everything. Toma appears to be in control of the couple’s relationship, when in fact he is just gravitating towards a woman he cannot understand,

pushing his endurance to the limit trying to save her.

When Ana overcomes her fears and adapts to the outside world, Toma remains alone, trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together, striving to understand the whirlwind that he has gone through.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Beuys was a hero of my youth. He was important because he wanted to reach the heart of society with his art, liberating it from its museum-confined straitjacket. His vision of art was dynamite in the Swabian suburb where I grew up. When I once again turned intensively to his work in 2013, I realized that Beuys was just as relevant as ever. This is why I decided to make a feature film about him. I viewed 300 hours of video and nearly as much audio material by and about Beuys. Beuys always revealed and concealed himself in riddles and contradictions, not least through his agile humor. We realized that this openness should also be the film’s leitmotiv. The project, in which we were planning to use 30 percent archival material, turned into a film that currently consists of nearly 95 percent archival material. No one could have foreseen that the film would be completed during a time when more and more people are longing for a past that never existed. In light of these anti-Utopias, Joseph Beuys is more important to me today than ever, since he insists on the possibility that the world can be changed, based on the capabilities of each individual person: “Nothing needs to remain the way it is.”

THE DIRECTOR

Andres Veiel was born in 1959 in Stuttgart and studied Psychology in Berlin. He then attended seminars in Directing and Dramaturgy at the Artist House Bethanien in Berlin from 1985-1989. Since then, he has been active writing film and theater scripts and lectures at the Free University in Berlin. His films include: A WINTERNIGHT‘S DREAM (documentary, 1992), BALAGAN (documentary, 1993) winner of the IFFS Main Prize and the German Film Award in Silver, THE SURVIVORS (documentary, 1996) winner of the Main Prize at the International Documentary Film Festival Munich and the Adolf Grimme Award in 1998, the highly-acclaimed BLACK BOX GERMANY (2001) for which he received the German Film Award for Best Documentary in 2002 and the European Film Award, DIE SPIELWÜTIGEN (2004), THE KICK (2006) which won the Grand Prix Cinema du Reel, and IF NOT US, WHO (2011).

BEUYS

Beuys, the man with a hat, some felt, and the Fettecke. Thirty years after his death he still seems to be a visionary, way ahead of his time. Back then he was trying to patiently explain how “money shouldn´t be a commodity.” He knew that money trade would undermine democracy. But there is more. Beuys boxes, parleys, lectures and explains pictures to a dead hare. He asks with a grin: “Do You Want a Revolution Without Laughter?“ His expanded

concept of art leads him smack in the middle of socially relevant discourse, even today.A congenial montage of countless, previously untapped visual and audio sources, director Andreas Veiel and his team created a one-of-a-kind chronicle: BEUYS is not a portrait in the common sense but an intimate look at a human being, his art and his world of ideas.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Our film could be called: NO COUNTRY FOR OLD WOMEN.The world in which we live in, certainly Poland in which this story takes place, is such a place. The main character of Spoor – Janina Duszejko (Agnieszka Mandat) is honest, passionate but also mad. Mad with anger, obsessions, love for animals and with compassion for marginalized people. She is full of rebellion and outrage. Her cruel, anarchic revolt is not meant to outrage us. On the contrary – the viewer should identify with her. Is that immoral? Yes, but only thanks to extreme provocation (which is often underlined with humour and tenderness) can we uncover the injustice and cruelty of the world that Duszejko inhabits. She and her contemporaries, she and her animals. The protagonist leads us through a landscape in which the beauty of nature and human friendship are mixed with mud, corruption, cruelty, stupidity and blood.Spoor does not end with a simple moral. The genres are mixed, as are reality and imagination. The audience may come away thinking that it was all just in the mind of Duszejko who suffers from an allergy to light...

THE DIRECTOR

Agnieszka Holland, born in Warsaw, graduated from FAMU, the Prague film school in 1971. She began her film career working with Krzysztof Zanussi as assistant director, and Andrzej Wajda as her mentor. Her film debut was AN EVENING AT ABDON‘S (1975) and her first feature film was PROVINCIAL ACTORS (1978), one of the flagship pictures of the „cinema of moral disquiet“ and the winner of the International Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1980. EUROPA EUROPA (1990) received an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay, a Golden Globe and a New York Film Critics Circle Award. Holland had also received an Academy Award nomination in 1985 as Best Foreign Language Film for ANGRY HARVEST (1985). She also collaborated with her friend, Krzysztof Kieslowski, on the screenplay of his trilogy, THREE COLOURS (1993). In 2008 Holland was honored with a retrospective of her films at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Her film IN DARKNESS (2011) received numerous awards and a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2012 Academy Awards.

SPOOR

Duszejko, an eccentric retired construction engineer, an astrologist and a vegetarian, lives in a small mountain village on the Czech-Polish border. One day her beloved dogs disappear. A few months later she discovers a dead body of her neighbour, a poacher. The only traces leading to the

mysterious death are those of roe deer hooves around the house…As time goes by, more grisly killings are discovered. The victims, all hunters, belonged to the local elite. The police investigation proves ineffective. Duszejko has her own theory: all murders were committed by wild animals…

BERLINALE SPECIAL

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

IN TIMES OF FADING LIGHT – the radiance of the communist utopia grows pale. A system is dying, a family is breaking apart.Four generations. Wilhelm and Charlotte, dyed-in-the-wool communists. People who sank with the ship, who believed in a righteous world and fought for it, sacrificed themselves for it. With their rigid tunnel vision, they ignored the life that was going on around them. The euphoric utopia of communism proved to be an illusion.Charlotte’s son Kurt, a historian, disenchanted after being interred in Soviet labor camps, but believing in the possibility of democratic socialism. His Russian wife Irina, who served in the Red Army. Grandson Sascha, who escaped to the West and who believes that individual freedom and socialism are irreconcilable opposites. Great-grandson Markus, for whom the GDR will remain little more than a childhood memory.I lived with these people, I experienced them. It is worth telling their story while they are still in our memories – also to help us understand the turmoil of our own days.

THE DIRECTOR

Matti Geschonneck was born May 8, 1952 in Potsdam, son of well-known Brechtian and DEFA actor Erwin Geschonneck and studied directing at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow. Moving to West

Germany in 1978, he started gathering initial practical experiences working as a directorial assistant for many years. In the early nineties, Geschonneck made his cinematic directorial debut with the surreal mystery drama „MOEBIUS“. After that, he dedicated himself to the small screen and for 18 years he would direct many, often multi-award winning features. His thriller “ANGST HAT EINE KALTE HAND“ received the Special Prize for Directing of the Deutsche Akademie für Darstellende Künste. He is a two-time winner of the Deutscher Fernsehpreis (German Television Award), most recently in 2013 for “DAS ENDE EINER NACHT”.He received the Student Jury Award at the Television Film Festival in Baden-Baden in 2015 as well as the Goldene Kamera Award in 2016 for his production “EIN GROSSER AUFBRUCH”.

THE SCREENWRITER

WOLFGANG KOHLHAASE was born in 1931 in Berlin and is regarded as one of the most important screenwriters in German film history. He gained international recognition and numerous awards for works such as BERLIN, SCHOENHAUSER CORNER (1957), THE GLEIWTZ CASE (1961), I WAS NINETEEN (1968), SOLO SUNNY (1980), THE LEGEND OF RITA (2000), SUMMER IN BERLIN (2005), AS WE WERE DREAMING (2015), and IN TIMES OF FADING LIGHT (2017).

IN TIMES OF FADING LIGHT

East Berlin, in the early autumn of ’89. The Powileit family celebrates the 90th birthday of Wilhelm, a former resistance fighter, returned expatriate and incorrigible Stalinist. His wife Charlotte is hosting the festivities where neighbors, acquaintances and dignitaries deliver flowers and give speeches as if nothing were amiss in the outside world. But someone is missing, and he is the only one who in Charlotte’s opinion knows how to set up the

extending table for the cold buffet: Sascha, her grandson. No one suspects that Sascha fled to West Germany just a few days ago… Through the eyes of Sascha’s father, Kurt – a historian, Gulag survivor, unhappily married to to his Russian wife Irina – we experience IN TIMES OF FADING LIGHT as a snapshot in time, showing us disintegration of a family and a political system.

BERLINALE SPECIAL

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

A PROMINENT PATIENT is a deep journey into the soul of a man as well as an insight into European pre-war politics and Czechoslovakia’s role in it. The film is built around two storylines. One tells an intimate and crude story of JAN MASARYK, a son of the founder of Czechoslovakia, who finds himself in a mental institution after losing his land to Nazi Germany. The other is an insight into European pre-war politics as experienced by the main character. The rhythm of the film is based on the constant clash between light and dark. The retrospective storyline is imbued with the feel of permanent “fog”, symbolizing what is in store for Europe in late 1930s. In a personal dimension, conversely, the film “brightens” as its protagonist regains his desire to fight back.I created a contemporary feel within a historical picture as I believe the conflict between submitting to a greater power and standing up for European values is constantly present. Today, once again, European countries must re-define their values and their sense of European unity and heritage in the face of an aggressor, this time against the Russian Federation.

THE DIRECTOR

Born in Prague, Julius Ševcík studied at the New York film academy and the Directing Department of the Film and TV School (FAMU) in Prague, receiving a master’s degree in 2006. Over the years, he shot numerous short films, his graduation feature film RESTART, and his debut co-production feature NORMAL - THE DUSSELDORF RIPPER. His movies have been acclaimed and awarded at film festivals in New York, Clearmont Ferrand, Mannheim Heidelberg, Taipei, and Moscow. In 2009, Ševcík received the Best Director award at Shanghai International Film Festival for NORMAL - THE DUSSELDORF RIPPER.

A PROMINENT PATIENT

Winter 1939. Flamboyant Czech diplomat Jan Masaryk has fled to America to escape his recent past. Germany has invaded Czechoslovakia and Masaryk is now a man without a nation. In America, he tries to forget the personal and political betrayals he and his country have suffered – but these events shadow his every step. Having served as the Czechoslovak

ambassador in London, Masaryk had failed to win the support of the British and could not avert the ruination of his country. With the help of Dr. Stein, a German immigrant and psychiatrist, and the beautiful writer Marcia Davenport, Masaryk tries to overcome his demons and relives the dramatic events leading up to the outbreak of the Second World War.

THE TRUE STORY DEVOTED TO THE LIFE AND FORTUNES OF JAN MASARYK, A DIPLOMAT AND LATER CZECHOSLOVAK FOREIGN MINISTER, TAKES US BACK TO THE RUN-UP TO WORLD WAR II.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

History has always been a huge part of my life. Books, articles, research, films. And Norway during World War II has probably received most attention by historians. But the most central part of the war has not yet been told, neither on TV nor film, the part that helps us to understand the event, and the gravity of it, the fact that war is death and danger.

THE KING’S CHOICE is the dramatic story of those who were the primary target for the attack, those who were pressured, and those whom the Nazis finally attempted to murder - the King, his family and the Government. It is the story of King Haakon, and of the attack on Norway. But it’s also a universal story about a loving father and his son.

THE KING’S CHOICE is a dream come true, a moving period drama and a portrait of a central but also mythical moment in our common history. With this film we aspired to enthrall the audience and to broaden the scope of what a biographical fiction film can be.

THE DIRECTOR

Erik Poppe (born 24 June 1960) started his career as a war photographer working for the newspaper Verdens Gang and Reuters. He was soon awarded by the Norwegian press association and World Press Photo. In 1991, he graduated as a cinematographer at the Dramatiska Institutet in Stockholm and worked as Director of Photography on several features, amongst them EGGS by Bent Hamer.

His subsequent work as a commercials and feature films director gathered him numerous national and international, and both jury and audience, awards. Among others, Poppe received the Norwegian Film Critics‘ Award for Best Feature for HAWAII, OSLO in 2005, TROUBLED WATER in 2009 and A THOUSAND TIMES GOOD NIGHT in 2014. He is the only filmmaker to have received the price three times.

A THOUSAND TIMES GOOD NIGHT was his first English-language film, which won the Special Grand Prix of the jury at its world premiere in Montreal. His “Oslo Trilogy” and A THOUSAND TIMES GOOD NIGHT have been sold to over fifty territories worldwide.

BERLINALE SPECIAL SERIES

East Germany (GDR), 1974. Lars Weber – young, ambitious, impenetrable – will soon have to prove his loyalty to his country; the 25-year-old knows that every step forward in the GDR comes with strings attached... For Lars, this means being sent to West Berlin as an East-German “Romeo” agent. His mission is to seduce women working in sensitive positions in the West. One of them is Lauren Faber, a high-ranking British intelligence officer and lonely single mother of a rebellious teen. Lauren’s younger colleague Sabine Cutter is deeply attracted to Lars. However, none of the two is aware of the secret they share…While Lars and Lauren constitute the core of this volatile saga of passion and deceit, other richly detailed characters on both sides of the Wall are also moving deftly among Stasi and CIA spies. The gay teacher Axel cannot bear the oppressiveness of the GDR any longer. He and a group of friends undertake one of the most foolhardy escape attempts imaginable: digging a tunnel beneath the Wall. Lars’ cousin Klara, in turn, is an excellent swimmer who’s blissful when she gets the chance to join the GDR Olympic Swim Team.

Having grown up in the shadow of her brilliant sister Juliane, Klara will do anything to become a winner and starts taking pills that produce disturbingside effects...As the the Iron Curtain seems impenetrable, the protagonists on either side of the wall seek security, humanity and freedom. They may have different systems and different lives, but they all share the same sky.

Totila Blumen is a Holocaust researcher. As such, he has no sense of fun. This applies in a general sense and specifically when his colleagues try to turn an Auschwitz conference into a corporate-sponsored media event. In the process, they trample all over the memory of the recently deceased Professor Norkus – whom Totila revered. On top of all this, Totila is lumped with an intern: a very young and irritating French student named Zazie. As she follows Totila like a puppy and has a fling with his boss, the otherwise serious and measured academic becomes a nervous wreck.

But it’s no good moaning about it – certainly not to his stressed wife, who demands that he gripe less and learn to accept what his life has to offer. And so Totila ploughs on with his work, aided by the overwrought, eccentric Zazie. She, however, appears to have an agenda of her own – and it’s closely related to Totila’s background and well-guarded family secret.

THE HAPPY PRINCE

This great man of letters is now a superstar on the skids. We are taken on a final nocturnal ramble through Paris. Totally inebriated Oscar falls off a table at a Varieté. In bed, dying, the past floods back. We immerge into the great love stories of Oscar Wilde, notably his relationship to Lord Alfred Douglas which, observed under the microscope of death, is revealed for what it really is – a passionate affair based on snobbery. And yet, through the smoky fumes of cigars and absinthe, appears a twinkle of love: Robbie.

Sternly devoted to Oscar like no other friend before. Oscar’s visions intensify. Past scenes of passion, ignorance and humiliation are reviewed in his minds eye. By now, Oscar’s brain has flickered into oblivion, the spectres of memory haunt him: His wife Constance, who he failed miserably and who still loves him, his sons, ashen and unforgiving, and at last Jesus Christ. Oscar tries to encounter suffering with irony and desperately performs the tragedy of his life to the very end.

THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER

The Unknown Soldier is an explosive war drama about a platoon of Finnish soldiers fighting the Soviets in the Second World War.Based on the best-selling novel by Väinö Linna and drawing from the author’s own experiences, The Unknown Soldier’s historical accuracy embraces the harsh realities of war—gritty and realistic, yet an unpolitical

and humane account. The story revolves around a diverse group of men, all at odds with how they see themselves, each other, and the common cause. Warm humour, camaraderie, and basic survival instincts are requisite for them to retain their humanity on the excruciating journey to Russia and back again.

THE INVISIBLES

Berlin, February 1943: The NS regime declares the Reich’s capital “free of Jews.” At this point in time, 7000 Jews have succeeded in going underground. Almost 1700 will survive the horrors of the war in Berlin. The Invisibles tells the stories of four of these contemporary witnesses.Hanni Lévy, who has just turned 17, has lost both of her parents. Thanks to her dyed, blonde hair, she is practically invisible to her pursuers, and strolls along the Ku’damm to pass the time away.Cioma Schönhaus has also gone underground and leads an adventurous life that consists of buying a sailboat, dining in Berlin’s best restaurants,

and becoming a forger of passports, through which he saves the lives of dozens of other Jews. And while Eugen Friede joins a resistance group that distributes anti-government leaflets, Ruth Arndt and a friend dream about life in America during the daytime; at night, she pretends to be a war widow and serves black-market gourmet foods in the apartment of an NS officer. The dramatic re-enactments are supplemented with impressive interviews with the actual people whose lives inspired this film.
