STRATEGIES FOR MAKING

REAL CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE

“Rabbi, what is that on your wrist?”

“It’s a Fitbit.”

“Why do you wear it?”

“It tracks how many steps I take each day, the quantity and quality of my sleep, and other important pieces of information.”

“C’mon Rabbi, sounds like

shtick to me. Do you really need that? What does it do for you? You already know you should be active each day and that you need to get enough sleep, so just do what you are supposed to, why do you need to wear something?”

I thought about his question and it struck me as compelling. We know what we need to do in life, so why not just do it? Why involve outside “shtick”? Isn’t it just a distraction?

And then I remembered an excellent quote from the great management expert Peter Drucker: “What Gets Measured Gets Managed.”

“The value of wearing a Fitbit,” I told my friend, “is that it holds me accountable to achieve my commitment and forces me to confront the reality of falling short, rather than at the end of each day bluffing or fooling myself about what had in fact transpired that day.”

Spiritual GrowthAcross the world from Professor Peter Drucker lived another management expert, only he specialized in personal management. Rav Kalonymus Kalman Shapira, Hy”d, also known as the Piaseczno Rebbe, was a Chassidic Rebbe in Poland who served as the Rabbi of the Warsaw Ghetto and, after surviving the uprising, was later shot dead by the Nazis in the Trawniki labor camp. Among his many talents,

he had incredible insight into human psychology.

In his spiritual diary called Tzav V’Ziruz he writes the following entry (#15):

If you have been able to draw up personal rules for your spiritual growth, consider this a success. But if you have not, then either you have not devoted your life to personal growth or you are blind to your own failures and successes.

Because the spiritual seeker who channels his efforts to his inner world will inevitably be faced with difficulty and distraction – not only external ones like supporting his family but also in his inner world such as indolence, negative tendencies, destructive character traits, and so forth – and because the spiritual seeker is constantly involved in this inner battle, sometimes winning and sometimes losing, he will inevitably come to conclusions: which strategies work for him and which ones bring out his weakness.

So someone who cannot draw such conclusions is not engaged in the battle – he neither wins nor loses. Or else he is unaware of both his inner weaknesses and strong points. (Translation from Yehoshua Starret)

Essentially, the Piaseczno Rebbe says that when it comes to our character, our personal growth and becoming the best version of ourselves – what gets measured, gets managed. One cannot claim to care about growing spiritually and fail to devise a plan or a strategy, set goals, and, most importantly, identify how progress will be measured.

It is one thing to say you want to work on having greater patience and being slower to anger and another to articulate a plan for how. Does the plan answer questions such as: What triggers your anger? Why do you lose patience? How will you learn to react differently? How will you measure and track if you are improving in this area?

It is one thing to say you want to work on improving your davening and

another to design a strategy to actually grow in your prayer experiences. Have you considered what is your biggest challenge connecting in prayer? When has prayer uplifted you in the past and what elements contributed to that positive experience and result? How will you improve? Will you read a book on prayer? Listen to classes on prayer? What are the metrics you will use to measure your growth in davening?

The difference between a desire to grow being just lip service and empty words versus the beginning of real change is designing our personalized Spiritual Fitbit – a Spiritbit.

Here are a few things to consider when programming your Spiritbit:Limit – Identify one or two areas you want to work on at a time. Taking on too much at one time makes it overwhelming and intimidating, making it almost impossible to make real progress.

Be Real – Be realistic in setting the goals. Don’t pledge to make radical changes that are impossible to achieve and unsustainable to maintain.

Plan – The Rambam writes that to authentically accomplish teshuva, vidui, articulating what we have done wrong, must be done out loud. Only by saying or writing what went wrong and what we will do to repair and improve in the future can we avoid bluffing ourselves or our way through this process. Putting our plan and goals into words causes us to be thoughtful, strategic, honest, and gives us a reference to measure against.Accountability – Involve a family member, friend, or confidant in holding you accountable for doing what you say you are going to do. Choose someone trustworthy, kind, and who is more interested in helping you grow than in

These create a “safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. • Our children are going to model their parents and their grandparents. If children are judgmental in any way toward their peers, they are

Schedule – Most businesses and companies have employee reviews. A good review seeks to validate and accentuate the positive while identifying and isolating areas that need improvement. Without scheduled reviews, it is unlikely time would be taken to reflect and to plan. Put in your schedule designated times to review your progress.

Celebrate – Make space to celebrate your progress and growth. Be proud and use that pride to be motivated to grow

further.

Start Again – Don’t stop just because you accomplished your particular goal. Set more goals and pursue them with the same resolve that brought you success the first time.Get more sleep, lose weight, have less anger, stop feeling jealous, improve davening, be more scrupulous in following Jewish law, set aside time daily for Torah study – whatever the area you want to work on, this can absolutely be your year.

But it won’t happen if you don’t design

a Spiritbit, a mechanism to be honest and to track results. Wear your Spiritbit and finally become the best version of yourself.

We are all excited about the upcoming High Holidays. In an effort to make our Davening more meaningful this year, we are once again seeking to pre-solicit our Kol Nidre pledges in advance of Yom Kippur. We have three goals for this appeal. First, we seek 100% participation. Second, as a community, we seek to raise a minimum of $40,000, higher than last year’s goal of $35,000. Third, and relatedly, we ask all families to consider increasing their support. In the coming weeks, we will be contacting everyone in the Shul to invite you to join us in accomplishing these goals, and having your name added to our list. We have made it so easy to contribute this year, all you have to do is go to www.brsonline.org/kolnidrei

HAVE YOU RESERVED YOUR SEAT YET?The deadline to submit the High Holiday Packet has passed. We would like to thank all those families who have submitted their forms and taken care of their financial obligations on time. Due to the overwhelming growth of the Shul and the demand for certain Minyanim, from this point forward, we will not be able to guarantee a seat in your Minyan of choice. We will do our best to accommodate everyone, but we apologize in advance if we need to switch you to another location. If you or a guest use a wheel chair, or a walker or request an arm chair seat, please inform the seating committee and your needs will be accommodated in designated areas. We are very grateful to the seating committee for their hard work and dedication in making sure everyone is taken care of. If you have not yet submitted your High Holiday Packet, please do so ASAP!

SETUP YOUR RECURRING PAYMENT PLAN Please be advised that the new fiscal year for the Shul has begun. As of September 1, all payment plans will be divided over the remaining 10 months. If you were previously on a recurring payment plan, it does not automatically renew, a new form MUST be completed. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDAs we are gearing up for the High Holidays there are many volunteer opportunities available. MEN’S MIKVAHPrivate appointments are available for the Men’s Mikvah on Erev Rosh Hashana and Erev Yom Kippur from 6:00 am through 11:45 am.The cost is $50 per private appointment. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Linda at (561) 394-0394.

The Mikvah will be open to all from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm and from 2:30 pmto 5:00 pm. This year, the Mikvah will be closed for cleaning 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm. This decision was made based on feedback from previous years due to the heavy usage on Erev Yom Tov.

BRS VOLUNTEER SECURITY TEAMThe summer is over, the kids are back to school, and life is returning to its normal pattern. You work hard all week, you rest on Shabbat, and you come to synagogue. SOCIAL ACTIONThe Lawfare Project’s Director, Brooke Goldstein (who spoke at BRS a few years ago), recently testified at New York’s City Hall in support of a City Council resolution in opposition to the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Campaign to bankrupt and delegitimize the State of Israel. The hearing was designed to be an open forum for the free exchange of ideas, but BDS protestors attempted to silence the testimony of anyone presenting facts or opinions inconsistent with their own views. Armed security officers were forced to eject protestors one by one to prevent the hearing room from devolving into utter chaos. Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations Chairman, Stephen Greenberg, commented to the council members that the vitriolic displays they were witnessing by pro-BDS protestors are exactly what Jewish and pro-Israel students face on American campuses every day -- but unlike in the Council chambers, on campuses, our children are not protected by armed security. The disgraceful behavior of the

pro-BDS participants proved the entire point of the hearing and the resolution, and painted a very clear picture of the bigoted, vengeful soul of the BDS movement. The Social Action Committee will meet at 7:30 pm in the Boardroom, next Wednesday, September 21.

Important Mikvah Update

Our community is blessed to have the immediate access and benefit of the various Mikvaot on our premises. However, due to the exact location of the Women’s Mikvah, it can be challenging to make use of it in a discreet and modest way. Women in the community have found that specifically on Friday nights and Yom Tov, since the mikvah opening times often coincides with Zman Tefillah, men will tend to congregate unintentionally around the Mikvah area. The T.M.I (Taharat Ha’Mishpacha Initiative) is aimed at increasing sensitivity and awareness around mikvah use on Friday night and Yom Tov. Our first request is to ask the community members not to stop and chat outside the Mikvah entrance or walk near the back parking lot but rather to carry your conversations elsewhere and not in the vicinity of the Mikvah. Unfortunately it has come to our attention that there are women in the community who do not feel comfortable with the current situation and therefore do not use the Mikvah on these nights at all. Whilst this creates complicated halachic difficulties, as a community we are partly responsible in creating new and improved circumstances that will allow for women to feel more at ease thereby making the very intimate, emotional and personal experience of using the Mikvah possible. Tried & successfully tested in other communities around the USA, we are creating a committee of women who will stand by the Mikvah entrance to help remind those leaving Shul to move their conversations to a different location. It will also create a sense of security for the women knowing that there are people looking out for their safety and wellbeing at night. We will also help facilitate walking groups from the various developments on and off the circle to make it more secure to walk to the Mikvah at night, for those individuals who feel that this is a concern. The mission of the T.M.I is to provide services so that one can participate in the mitzvah of Mikvah in a way that it will be kept completely anonymous and more secure and safe. Confidential services will be provided to those once they sign up for Mikvah use via our soon to be launched Mikvah website. In the meanwhile, please email the BRS office - either to register your name for membership of the mikvah, to volunteer to be a ‘Mikvah Guard’, or to request a walking group for your Mikvah night. With the community’s help and cooperation, we look forward to enabling all the women of our community in the smooth and uninterrupted use of the Mikvah from now on.
