    WELCOME TO GRACE COVENANT!

Thank you for joining us today! We are an historic Presbyteriancongregation offering traditional worship and multiple ministries

for persons of all ages. Please join us following worship for fellowshipin the Social Room. Thank you for turning off your cell phones, pagers, cameras, and other electronic devices for the duration

    of morning worship.

The simple and glorious facts that God is a self-revealing Godand that he has revealed himself to man indicate the importanceof our minds.

    ~John Stott

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and newsabout him spread through the whole countryside. He taught intheir synagogues, and everyone praised him.

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on theSabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. Andhe stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handedto him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it was written:

The Spirit of the Lord is on me,because he has anointed meto preach good new to the poor.

He was sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners And recovery of sight for the blind,

to release the oppressed,To proclaim the year of the Lords favor.

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and satdown. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened onhim, and he began by saying to them, Today this scripture isfulfilled in your hearing.

A NTHEM Blest Be the God of Israel Michael BurkhardtChancel Choir (b. 1957)

Blest be the God of Israel, Who comes to set us free;Who visits and redeems us, Who grants us liberty. The prophets spoke of mercy, Of freedom and release;God shall fulfill that promise And bring his people peace.

Now from the house of David A child of grace is givn; A Savior comes among us To raise us up to heavn. Before him goes the herald, Forerunner in the way,The prophet of salvation, The messenger of day.

On those who sit in darkness The sun begins to rise,The dawning of forgiveness Upon the sinners eyes.God guides the feet of pilgrims Along the paths of peace.O bless our God and Savior With songs that never cease!

Performed by manyorganists and having been arranged for strings and concert bands, todays prelude isby far the most popular of Bachs Schblerorgan chorales. The choral anthem is aparaphrase of the Benedictus in Luke 1:68-79. The anthem text is by Michael Perry whowas one of the United Kingdoms leadinghymn writers of the twentieth century. Thanthem is based on the hymn tune M ERLESTUNE, composed by Hal Hopson in 1983and named for Hopsons oldest sister,Merle, who was his first piano teacher. Theservice concludes with a toccata based onthe German Advent hymn tune N UN KOMMDER HEIDEN HEILAND(Presbyterian Hymnal,#14).
