Dear Friends, This April edition is our Easter Edition. You will see that there are Easter

Church of England services at All Saints Wouldham, Burham Old Church

(by the River) and the popular children’s Messy Church at Burham Old

School. (page 4) During the interregnum (while we don’t have a vicar) the

services are conducted by our regular visiting clergy. Also the Methodist

Church in Burham has a full programme of Easter Services ( page 9).

In this April Magazine you will find plenty of activities of interest. You can

see that you never need to be without friends in the villages—go along to

one of the social ‘get-togethers’: Thursday Community Club (at Burham Old

School Community Centre), Afternoon Tea (at Burham Methodist Church),

Country Lunch (at Burham Methodist Church) and All Saints Coffee

Morning ( at the newly refurbished All Saints, Wouldham). If you enjoy

handicrafts there are tapestry and knitting groups to join.

You could have a great evening out on the Kingswear Castle Paddle Steamer

and there’s a local musical evening with ‘Mosaic Group’ at Burham

Methodist Church. (all in aid of very worthy charities)

For the very active (or for those who want to be more active!), Burham

Parish Council have arranged for Rubicon, the skateboard specialists to be at

the Skate Ramp to teach anyone who wants to turn up and learn. (page 11).

If you have small children, see what’s going on at the Children’s Centre

(page 12). You could get fit and have lots and lots of fun at the new Zumba

Class which is starting and, if you’re a bookworm, you could join the Book

Club, visit the Book Exchange and the Mobile Library!

There are events and activities to look forward to and put in our diaries for

May and into the summer. The TMBC Civic Service this year comes to All

Saints Parish Church, Wouldham because it is the home Parish Church of

Councillor Dave Davis who, this year, is to be commissioned as Mayor. (see

page 7). Also see in May that there is a Men’s Supper Evening when men

(ie any men) get together in good company for a drink, an interesting talk

and a homemade supper (page 4).

The Yalding and District Beekeepers have been in touch with us to advertise

their ‘Honey Bee Fayre and Auction’. It’s a real “family affair” with a

summer fete atmosphere for the whole family to come along to as well as the

beekeepers. Also the Summer Play scheme in Wouldham is taking place

over the last week on July and will be lots and lots of fun for the children.

Join Sharon and get involved to make all it happen. (page 13).

See also what is ‘Lost & Found’! There’s much more besides and all the

details are to be found within........... If you want to advertise your events/

groups, send them to the Editor. (contact:–back cover) Mary Davis

BLYSTHWOOD CARE APPEAL FOR YOUR HELP

Blythswood Care responds to requests for help locally and globally—

demand for clothing, bedding, shoes, etc is currently exceeding what we can

supply! We would be grateful if you would help us by passing the word

around that we URGENTLY need more clothes, bedding, shoes etc. There is

also a need for musical instruments for young people to learn, spectacles and

empty spectacle cases, hearing aids, good quality pots & pans, crockery,

cutlery — where appropriate in sets of four or more, personal CD or audio

players, sports equipment for children’s camps etc.

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council

CIVIC CHURCH SERVICE

All Saints Church, Wouldham

20th May 2012 at 2:30 pm

A Personal Note from Councillor Dave Davis

Last year, I was selected by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council to be

their Deputy Mayor. Tradition has it that the Deputy Mayor becomes Mayor

the following year, so if all goes according to plan and I am duly elected

Mayor in May 2012, it will be an honour that I will be pleased to accept. In

the coming year, Mary, my wife, will be my Mayoress helping me to serve

the people of the borough and accompanying me to most of the functions.

As Mayor, I will not have an executive role. The Mayor’s main job is to be

the Borough’s public representative wherever required. The Mayor is also

the Chairman of the full meetings of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council.

The post is strictly non political and mainly a ceremonial one. It is a special

role in the British way of life and Mary and I are looking forward to the

coming year as Mayor and Mayoress.

The first event in our mayoral year will be the Tonbridge and Malling Civic

Service which, by tradition, is held at the Mayor’s home church and, in my

case that is All Saints in The Parish of Burham and Wouldham. The Service

will be held on Sunday 20th May at 2:30 pm. Normally my Chaplain for my

Mayoral year would be my local vicar. However, at present we have an

interregnum where we have no vicar and so I’m delighted that Canon Liz

Walker, who used to be our vicar here, has very kindly agreed to be my

Chaplain for the year and she will conduct the Civic Service.

The Civic Service is a public event and whilst the borough will invite a

number of dignitaries to it, Mary and I hope that as many people as possible

from The Parish of Burham and Wouldham will come to All Saints in

Wouldham and enjoy this service of dedication and commitment of

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Skate ramp Community Activity Day –

Rubicon, the skateboard specialists will be at the ramp on Saturday 14th

April from 9.00am for informal teaching. There’s no need to register, just

turn up. All welcome.

Rubicon will be on site one Saturday a month from April, so keep an eye on

the notice-boards and parish magazine for the dates.

From 18th March, PCSO Stoner

will be leaving our area to transfer

to Edenbridge. Our new officer

will be PCSO Wilson.

Please ensure that if you are utilizing any of the car parks within the village, that your vehicle is taxed, MOT and of course insured. Steps are

in place to improve the surface of the overflow car park at the Village Hall and as some of you may have noticed, the recycling area has been

re-arranged to increase the parking spaces. Parking at all times within the village is becoming more and more difficult and there is no easy

solution to the problems being experienced. We therefore need to try and work together and make the best out of a tricky situation, so if you are using the facilities provided by the Parish Council, please ensure that you

park appropriately.

Many thanks to all those residents that use the recycling

site and for those of you that don’t “why not?”

The cardboard in particular generates funds for the

village and so far you, the residents have raised over

£2,000 in this financial year.

If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss, just give me a call on 01622 609324, e-mail me on [email protected] or come along to the monthly meetings, normally held the last Monday of the month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 30th April 2012, 7.30 pm in the Old School Community Centre, Corner of Rochester Road/Bell Lane. Pam Saunders - Clerk

The 1st ‘Bash the Trash’ on 3rd

March was well received with lots

of litter collected. Many thanks to

those residents who attended.

Shannon (14) and her sister Leanne (13)

are part of a local young band who are

all aged between 13 to 15 years. They

are called Imperfect Perfection and

have impressed the judging panel of a

music competition and sailed through

the audition stage of ‘Live and Unsigned 2012’. They will be competing

against other talented bands and artists in the country at the Regional Final

on Sunday 29th April at Hove Centre, Brighton. There they will have the

opportunity to make it to the Grand Final at Live Fest at The O2, London.

Leanne and Shannon have progressed to writing their own songs and have

recently recorded their own beautiful song, ‘Tickings’. They are self-taught in

playing the piano, base and electric guitar and are also taught and managed

by their father Mark who has a music background himself.

Shannon and Leanne have recently moved with their family to Burham from

Wrotham and they have been very well received here when they performed at

local Acoustic Nights. Shannon and Leanne continue to attend Wrotham

Secondary School and Shannon is studying for a BTEC in music hoping to

gain a qualification in sound engineering.

Welcome to Burham CE Primary School’s news item

This month’s news item has been written by Dylan Willis in Year 6.

‘Giraffe class have been collecting money to complete their

goal – to raise enough money to go and see ‘Matilda’ at the theatre in London.

Giraffe class have named their company ‘Giraffe Enterprise.’ So far

we have raised a whopping £560 – that’s a lot more than we expected!

Giraffe class raised the money by the following fundraising activities: selling hot chocolate, a book sale, selling Christmas cards, cake sales and selling Ribena.

Giraffe class have just undertaken an Easter egg competition too that was drawn on 30th March in our school hall.

Giraffe class would like to say a big thank you for the contributions from all the

parents and children of Burham School and anyone else that helped us to reach our

goal.’ Michelle Grima Headteacher

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School First of all – have a very happy Easter! School is obviously closed for the

first part of this month and opens to all children on Tuesday 17th.

As we move into the closing third of the school year we begin to get ever

more excited about the forthcoming Olympic games. This is going to be a

big feature of the next few months. We are hoping to display flags of

different countries as part of this and so if anybody has any lying around that

they don’t need we would be pleased to take them off you (either

permanently or on loan!).

Last term we enjoyed themes of ‘Transport’ and ‘Terrible Tudors’ with all

sorts of exciting learning taking place. We even had a visit from Good King

Hal at the start of the month which even included a jousting contest!

Mothers’ Day was marked with a special emphasis on writing and mums and

grans were invited in for a treat one afternoon.

We also had a bridge building competition, a chess match and a trip to

develop spy skills for some children from Year 6. We also had an interesting

trip to Burham School to join in with some drugs education delivered by a

theatre group.

Children in Years 2 and 3 had a day at Rochester Cathedral as part of a

Church Schools Festival where a number of different schools came together

to celebrate springtime and Easter. It is always a good thing for schools to

meet and share similar experiences as in the present climate we seem to be

increasingly more isolated.

Depending on the publication date we may have had or be in the middle of

our Easter celebrations with children creating bonnets and eggs decorated

with the theme of ‘The Egglympics 2012’. I wonder what they will come up

with?

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

At the Parish Council Meeting this month, David Liepnik, our Community

Warden told us about Operation Ramble which is an Olympics security test

operation that is taking place on 21st April in

Ebbsfleet. If there are any willing volunteers that

would also like to take part – please contact David.

David also spoke about his involvement in the

inter-school cross country run that had taken place in

Wouldham. It was so successful and everyone

enjoyed it so much – that it will hopefully be

repeated next year!

Village Hall Update: The Village Hall Management

Committee will be meeting with the fundraising

company on 16th March to get

things moving as far as the

necessary funds for the build are

concerned. In the meantime, the

Parish Council will be organising some maintenance

and repairs to the current Village Hall to ensure that it is

still in good working order.

It has been noted that there appear to be divots (where

a piece of soil has been dug up) appearing in the

Recreation ground and the cause of this is known to be

from people using metal detectors. Clearly, leaving

these divots creates a dangerous trip hazard for people

walking on the Recreation ground – so this is a request

for all of you metal detective enthusiasts to please not

carry out this activity on the Recreation Ground.

Finally, there were 5 reports of crime in Wouldham this

month including 1 assault, 1 burglary, 1 possession of cannabis, 1 criminal

damage and the theft of a Greenhouse from the Village allotments. Remem-

ber to stay vigilant and report any thing suspicious! The next Council will

be meeting on 3rd April 2012

1/ Not Filed Your 2011 Tax Return Yet? At the moment you face a £100 fine, but from 1st May this will increase by £10 per day until it hits £1,000! Regardless of if you owe any tax. Your return must be filed on- line by 30th April to avoid the penalty so you need to get going now to get your on-line codes etc. If you don’t know where to start, talk to us NOW!

2/ Electricians Beware... The Revenue say they know about lots of moonlighting electricians and are after them. BUT if they come clean using the “Electricians Tax Safe Plan” before 15th May they can save up to 90% of the penalty on any undeclared income in the last 5 years, not to mention avoiding prosecution. If this affects you, call now!
