Dear Friends, Each month I am amazed at all the activities that are going on in the

villages—always plenty of opportunities to meet up with new people or old

friends. There’s a particularly lively ‘Thursday Community Club’ that meets

at the Old School in Burham. Here they get up to all sorts of exciting things!

Also here there’s a visit on the 3rd Thursday by the ‘Hi Kent Hearing Aid

Clinic’. This is a charity which offers a very special free service: -

‘Hi Kent, the charity that works with deaf and hard of hearing people

throughout Kent, has a clinic at the Old School Burham on the third

Thursday of each month (not August) from 10.30 – 11.30 am.

People with NHS hearing aids can drop in and get their hearing aids

cleaned and re-tubed and collect fresh batteries free of charge. There will

also be free advice and information about Hi Kent’s wide range of

equipment including telephones and television listening devices. These items

can make a huge difference to someone with a hearing loss. Everyone

welcome, no appointment necessary.’

The next clinic will be on Thursday, 21st June.

Just a few of the other events: Go and spoil yourself at the Pamper Evening.

There is a special 1950’s Jubilee Tea at Wouldham Church and a ‘Fayre’ for

all the family to enjoy at Wouldham School. Again the Skate Board experts

will be giving free BMX coaching if you turn up to the Skate Ramp. Also, if

you have small children, take a look at what is going on at the new

Children’s Centre. A new Baby Clinic/Baby Time is starting up and is

advertised here. If you’re de-cluttering or raising money for charity, take a

stall at the new Boot Sale which is running every Sunday in Aylesford.

I have been asked to bring to people’s attention an important survey that is

being delivered to each house. It is a Survey on the 155 Bus Service where

there have been recent cuts that have badly affected people. Please complete

the survey even if you don’t use the bus in the villages and try to appreciate

how important the bus is to different people and at different times in their

lives. (page 17)

Also there is advance notice of a closure of Rochester Road in July for 2

weeks which will cause a lot of local inconvenience. (page 17)

(Information on road works is correct at the time of going to print. I am

aware that some road works/closures have not occurred on the dates stated.

You can always check road works: http://roadworks.org/

or ring Kent County Council Highways: 08458 247800)

Praise Bus The Olympic Torch has have already left Lands End in Cornwall to start its journey throughout the United Kingdom finishing in London at the start of the Games at the end of July. A member of a small Methodist Church just a mile from Lands End has been inspired to arrange for a bus to precede this procession. Musicians along the route will be contributing to the singing of hymns and songs assisted by others who will stay on the bus for the whole of its journey. The aim of this amazing project is to give fun and encouragement, letting every man, woman and child know that God loves them. The Olympic Torch spends the night of July 19th in Maidstone, so if you are there, look out for this brightly coloured bus and be inspired by the vision it represents. Speed Indicator devices: Whilst it was hoped that these would be

installed by now, things have obviously been delayed. The posts and the

signs have certainly been ordered by KHS and we are just awaiting an

installation date for the posts. Hopefully, it won’t be too long now.

Scout Hut: The previous covenant

has finally been lifted on the scout

hut. The building can now be used

for any community use. So if you

are interested in hiring a small

hall, just give me a call.

Website: Burhamvillage.org. Don’t

forget the new website is up and

running. Most local events are listed

together with other relevant

information including Parish Council

minutes, agendas and also the

“Welcome Booklet”. If you have an

event that you would like listed,

follow the link on the website and

your event will be listed. Improvements to the overflow car

park/recycling area have hopefully

been carried out. Work was due to

commence in June sometime for

hard standing of the recycling banks,

so if its not happened, it’s certainly

won’t be long. Our thanks to TMBC

who supported this financially. .

The next training session at the skate

ramp, with Rubicon is on Saturday

16th June 2012, from 9.00 until

4.00pm. This session will be directed

at BMX riders. There’s no need to

book, just turn up.

To support Armed Forces Day and other special events, we are hoping

to erect a flag pole (and of course a flag) in the war memorial gardens.

This is not only to support our Armed Forces, to celebrate all the good

work that they carry out but also to “Fly the Flag” in Burham for

distinctive events.

If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss,

just give me a call on 01622 609324, e-mail me on

[email protected] or come along to the monthly meetings,

normally held the last Monday of the month. The next meeting is

scheduled for Monday 25th June, 7.30 pm, in the Scout Hut, Village Hall

Site, Rochester Road, Burham. Pam Saunders - Clerk

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Councillors Keith Malkinson and Richard Stone have been elected again as

the Chairman and Vice-Chairman for Wouldham Parish Council for 2012-

13 at May’s AGM meeting. We look forward to both Councillors carrying

on with the projects started last year. Please see the

website for the Chairman’s report for 2011-12

Our Borough Councillors are working with Arriva and

KCC to try to make the 155 Bus a viable service in

the village. A survey will be delivered to all residents

shortly. Please make sure you complete this survey

to help retain this vital rural bus service.

We have a lovely recreation ground in Wouldham,

with good play equipment, but it is a shame about the

dog poo! We are still getting complaints, so please,

can the offenders please clear up after their dogs. It

helps to keep a pleasant environment for everyone to

live in. On the positive side, there were not any crimes

reported to the Police for Wouldham during April.

Proposed New Village Hall

Thank you to all residents who took part in the survey. See the results on

the Parish Council website shortly. The Parish Council has been awarded

£2000 from Tonbridge & Malling’s Community Enhancement Fund for

architect fees for this project. Thank you to Borough Councillor Roger

Dalton for supporting our application on this.

The Parish Council meeting is early on 29th May 2012 in the Village Hall.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Goodbye to one of Burham’s most active supporters.

In Memory of Bernard Hinchey.

We lost Bernard Hinchey in April this year. A very sad time for us all, and, a

great loss to Burham.

For those of you who did not know Bernard, and for those who did, please

read this appreciation of his long time contribution to this village. Bernard

moved into Burham in the Sixties. He almost immediately formed an

allegiance with like minded people of the village, who were committed to the

pursuit of entertainment, and the continuation of the social life of our

community.

Bernard was, for some time, chairman of the village hall management

committee, and heavily involved with gala day committees. During this time

he, with his committee members, organised fund raising for all of our events,

including some of our most amazing Gala days. He, with others, raised the

funds for the children’s street party at the time of the Queens silver jubilee,

which at the last minute had to be moved to a farmer’s barn because of the

bad weather. In spite of all, he always came through.

Then there was the year that the Red Arrows performed above our recreation

ground. This I remember was a most amazing day; with thousands of people

on our rec. Bernard was at the crux of the organisation and fund raising for

this event.

Then, when the Tour De France came through Burham, he was there again, in

the forefront of this most amazingly well organised day. By this time he was

well into his 70’s.

Through his love of fairground organs, he not only owned, and displayed

one, but he also amassed a fraternity of like minded enthusiasts, most of

whom at some time over the years, performed at our events.

Even in his last years, he enthusiastically involved others among us to put on

two further fun days, both of which were unequalled successes, all of which

he orchestrated.

He gave his all to Burham, and asked nothing in return. Such enthusiasm

from an unassuming, hardworking individual will be sorely missed by the

people who knew him, and also by those that did not, for there is currently

nobody to take his place.

On behalf of all that will miss him.

With thanks, and great respect.

Mick Cable.

The 155 bus service through Burham and Wouldham has been reduced and

Got a Tax Return? Why wait?

The advantages of doing your tax return early could include: lots of time to save for any payment due; an accurate (and possibly reduced) July payment on account; an early repayment, if one’s due; more accurate tax coding; no risk of penalties; and most importantly just one less thing to worry about! Not sure where to start or just can’t face working your way through the jargon and

boxes on the form/on line? Better things to do with your time? We can take the hassle

out of tax compliance (and may even be able to save you some tax). Come and have

a chat soon... Then you can relax!

Don’t

forget...
