Dear Friends,

On Monday 3rd September at

7-30pm another chapter in our

Parish life begins. The ceremony of

Licensing and Installation of our

new Parish Priest, Mike Hayes

will take place.

This is an important occasion in

The Church of England which for

centuries have been part of the

structure of government in this

country. The service involves The

Bishop, Archdeacon and Rural

Dean. Our Member of Parliament,

Mayor, Borough and Parish

councillors and members of clergy from the Diocese and Deanery

will also be invited.

Members of the congregation also have a part to play in

accepting and welcoming Mike as our Parish Priest.

The number of invited guests and participants means that many of

the seats in All Saints Church will be occupied, however anyone

wishing to attend from the parish will be warmly welcomed and

every endeavour will be made to find seating.

Similarly, parking may be difficult close to the church so

alternative arrangements will need to be made by those attending.

Following the service a reception will be held in the hall at

Wouldham Primary School where there will be the opportunity to

meet with Mike Hayes.

There will of course be opportunities to meet Mike at all the

services at All Saints and at Messy Church in Burham in the

weeks to come as well as seeing him around the villages getting to

know us all.

coffee. How is this possible? Country Lunch (along with Afternoon Tea) is not a

fund raising activity for the Methodist Church in Burham. We always cover costs

DONATE A PEW CUSHION AT ALL SAINTS, WOULDHAM

With our pew cushion project underway, it is

clear that we must maintain a balance between

the willing workers who are dedicating their time

and skill to working the cushion and the money

available to finance the project.

The evidence of our success in achieving the balance will show itself in

our church being furnished with beautiful new cushions in the coming

months. There will be many of you who, while unable to work the cush-

ions yourselves, will wish to be associated with the project by purchas-

ing or donating towards a cushion as a token of your involvement, and

perhaps as a memorial to a family member or friend.

You can do this by completing the details below and giving it to one of

our churchwardens with your donation. The finished cushion will carry

a permanent label recording the name of the donor (or to whom it is

dedicated), together with the name of the person by whom the cushion

was worked.

155 Evening bus timetable: The 3 parishes (Wouldham, Burham and

Aylesford) have joint funded to a tune of £5000 towards a proposed 6 month

trial period to have the evening 155 bus service reinstated. A petition was

handed over to KCC during July. It is essential that the bus service is well

used in the trial period. It only takes on average 6 people on every bus to

ensure its future. We will keep you posted on this.

War memorial gardens: The Parish Council appreciate that during certain

periods earlier in the year, this area was not at it’s best. This was due to the

very poor/wet weather which we were experiencing and our landscaping

contractors schedule was delayed. We will be looking at the war memorial

gardens for next year’s project 2012/2013, so please let me know if you have

any ideas.

Speed Indicator Devices (SID’s): We have kept reporting that these are due

to be installed shortly. After chasing KHS several times during July, we

understand that the work should be carried out by mid August, so hopefully

by the time this edition is published, the SID’s should be installed.

Skate ramp Phase B: Although we have not given up yet, we are struggling

to secure all the funds for this project. So far just under half the funds have

been secured, but there is a deadline on this secured funding. If any local

users or residents have ideas regarding funds, please let the Parish Council

know.

Flag pole: We are pleased and proud that we now have a flagpole in the

Memorial Gardens and would like to give the Burham residents an

opportunity to request the flag being flown at half mast for a member of their

immediate family who passes away. The flag would be flown for one day

only on the day of their funeral. Any request to the Parish Council will be

accepted in writing only.

Just a reminder, the junior football pitch at the top of the recreation ground

should only be used by children aged 11 years and under. There has been an

incident lately when teenagers were using the pitch and someone at the

skate ramp was hit by a football. Please be considerate when using the all

facilities.

If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss, just

give me a call on 01622 609324, e-mail me on [email protected] or

come along to the monthly meetings, normally held the last Monday of the

month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 24 September 2012,

7.30 pm in the Scout Hut, Village Hall Site, Rochester Road, Burham. Pam Saunders - Clerk

Asbestos Related Lung Cancer

You may still be entitled to compensation even if you were a smoker

Lung cancer is most commonly associated with smoking. However it can also be

caused by breathing in asbestos dust and is a common complication of asbestosis.

Because a high percentage of lung cancers are attributed to smoking, the possibility that

exposure to asbestos has contributed is often not explored. This also means that many

miss out on claiming Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit or claiming compensation

for lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

Medical opinion is divided on whether lung cancer can be caused by exposure to

asbestos in the absence of asbestosis, although the majority view is that it can be. In any

event, changes to the benefit system now recognise that you no longer have to have

asbestosis to claim benefits for lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. In those

instances you have to provide evidence of substantial occupational asbestos exposure

which is set out in the terms of prescription in the Appendix of Prescribed Diseases (for

eligibility to Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit). You may also be able to obtain

compensation from any employers (or their insurers) who caused the asbestos exposure.

Whilst exposure to either asbestos or smoking can cause lung cancer, the combination

of both together significantly increases the chances of developing lung cancer. A study

in America found that a heavy smoker, smoking one pack a day for 20 years has a ten

fold increased risk of developing lung cancer over a non-smoker. A non-smoker

exposed to asbestos has a five fold increased risk over a non-smoker not exposed to

asbestos. Notably, a heavy smoker who has also been exposed to asbestos has a 50 to 90

fold increased risk of developing lung cancer over a non-smoker who is not exposed to

asbestos.

As this data shows, exposure to asbestos can be a major contributing factor in the

development of lung cancer even for those who smoke.

Evidence of fibrosis of the lungs, very heavy exposure to asbestos for one year, or

five – ten years moderate exposure should be sufficient to establish that the exposure

has materially contributed to the risk of developing lung cancer. A further requirement

is that at least ten years must have passed between such exposure and the development

of the condition. Therefore if you have been exposed to asbestos and developed lung

cancer you may be entitled to claim compensation for lung cancer caused by your

asbestos exposure even if you have smoked. You may also be entitled to state benefits.

Current case law indicates there may be a reduction in your compensation to reflect the

extent to which smoking on its own may have contributed to the risk.

If you have been diagnosed with an asbestos related disease (asbestosis, mesothelioma,

pleural thickening or asbestos lung cancer) as a result of harmful exposure to asbestos,

you may be able to claim compensation. We offer free consultation, no charge for our

time pursuing a claim win or lose and a guarantee that you will keep 100% of your

compensation. For an informal, no obligation discussion on whether or not you may

have a claim please contact Jeremy Horton (Partner and head of Personal Injury at

Brachers) on 01622 680415 or email [email protected]. For more details,

including case studies of how Brachers has assisted clients with asbestos related disease

claims, please visit www.brachers.co.uk.

WENDY'S 20/2012 CHALLENGE

Thursday, Sept 6th 2012, in aid of Spinal Research

On this day I aim:-

To ride 20 horses for 20 minutes each inside

12 hours and to raise £2012! Many Burham residents will be aware that I had a bad fall off my big horse

Kinza last October, fracturing my neck and re-arranging some of my face!

Now I'm back in the saddle and feeling lucky to be fit & well again I am

trying to raise funds for one of my favourite charities - Spinal Research, who

fund a number of research projects aiming to find ways of treating spinal

injuries, whether they happen to sports people, drivers or motor cyclists.

You'll see me out getting fit in the next few weeks - but it's going to be

tough. I did the same challenge 3 years ago before all these injuries, and had

wobbly aching legs at the end...

Please support me - I'll be out and about with my sponsor form, or you can

give online at www.justgiving.com/Wendy-Neath

And please come and say hello, or give me a thumbs up as you see me riding

through the village that day!

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL

We hope that you are enjoying your summer and taking advantage of any sunny days by

getting out and exploring some of the beautiful Kent countryside. For those of you that have

dogs, there is still an issue in the Village with dog owners not picking up after their dogs in

public places. The local Dog Warden has noted that the Recreation Ground in particular

seems to be a problem area. You may have recently seen a media campaign which was

based around a case study on a toddler, who hit news headlines after falling in dog poop and

losing partial sight in one of her eyes after suffering with

toxocariasis. Our Recreation ground is well used by parents

with young children, and it would be devastating to think that

something like that might happen to one of our local families.

There is no such thing as a Dog Pooh Fairy, so please, pick up

after your dogs! And if you know anyone who is not doing so,

please contact the Parish Council.

Village Hall Update: The Village Hall Management

Committee was extremely pleased with the large number of

responses to the Village Hall residents’ survey. Thank you for

taking part! We are currently

analysing the survey and making

sure that the design of the Hall

reflects what you say it should be

used for as well as the needs of

local groups that hope to be using

it.

On 15 November 2012, for the

first time ever, the Kent public will

elect a Police and Crime Commis-

sioner (PCC) who will be account-

able for how crime is tackled in

Kent. The PCC role will replace the

current Kent Police Authority and

will involve working with the

public, the police and local partners

to ensure effective policing and that

public priorities are acted upon.

You can find out more about this on Kent Police’s website or

at one of the summer road shows being held throughout Kent.

Crime Report: Between Saturday 23rd of June at 10:00 and Tuesday 26th of June at 11:30,

a gravestone in the church off the High Street was smashed and other items on the grave

damaged.

Doing Your Tax Return The Easy Way...

With Summer Hols and the Olympics fading into memory maybe you are now thinking about your Tax Return... You have less than 2 months left to file it by post, or you could, of course, file on-line via HMRC’s website. That’ll

give you longer, but you still have the same hassle of wading through the jargon to see what boxes to fill in and the worry about getting it wrong. Or you could go for the easy 3rd option... leave it to the Professionals and save yourself the time and doubt. You don’t have to run a business to use an accountant - come and have a chat!
