Dear Friends,
RING OUT THOSE BELLS
The wedding season will soon be here.
Bells will be ringing out.
Our dedicated team of bellringers are
looking to recruit some new ringers.
Bellringing is supposed to be a bit like yoga in some ways – it helps us
to be more grounded and focussed. A sense of humour is also an
advantage.
All Saints’ Wouldham has a reputation of being a friendly tower.
Bellringing Practice Night is on a Wednesday from 8-9pm. The
meeting usually then continues at the Watermans Arms.
If you would like to see bellringing in action then you can come to the
church just before 8pm on any Wednesday and you will be invited to
observe what goes on. If you are interested you could try for yourself,
and then if you like it you can embark on the training with our
experienced team.
The bells are rung before the 10.30 service at All Saints on the 2nd and
4th Sundays of each month, and on festivals, and when requested at
weddings, and a single bell is tolled at funerals.
It’s a wonderful tradition which you could be a part of, and Wouldham
has some particularly fine 17th century bells.
Children of secondary school age would also be considered but would
need to come with a parent or guardian on the first visit.
The bellringers also kindly share the responsibility of winding the
clock twice a week. The clock dates from 1899 and is still running well
(unless we forget to wind it!). Winding it involves winding 3 heavy
weights on cables up to the top of the tower. As they slowly come
down they turn the hands of the clock, and ring the chimes and quarter
chimes.
If you would like to see the clock chamber, and also go out on top of
the tower, tours will be taking place again during the summer Sunday
cream teas from 2-4pm on 5th and 26th July and 9th and 23rd August.

Churchyard Working Group Lately we’ve had a really good response for the working
parties in Wouldham churchyard. Thank you to all those
who took part. We would like to have a group of people
who come together on a regular basis to clear ivy and
weeds, tend to uncared-for graves, as well as carrying out
other specified tasks. This will help complement the grass-
cutting activity and keep the churchyard in good order. This work could
also be done alone at a time to suit you.

BURHAM COMMUNION SERVICE we now have an extra
9am Service of Holy Communion at Burham Community Centre on the
1st Sunday of each month.
The service lasts just over half an hour. There are readings for the day,

THE PEW CUSHION PROJECT AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH
This project is proceeding well and anyone interested in joining the
needle workers will be very welcome. We are working tapestry cushions
for the pews in memory of loved ones. The finished cushion will carry a
permanent label with the name of the donor and/or to whom it is dedi-
cated together with the name of the person who has worked the cushion.
Contributors will be contacted when their cushion is ready and informed
at which Service it will be dedicated.
Each cushion measures 52ʺ x 13ʺ and costs £170. Sharing the cost with
others who have expressed an interest is possible so contributions over
£30 are gratefully received. The cushions are worked by volunteers as it is
a non-profit making activity.

BURHAM UNITED CHARITIES
Burham United Charities are a local charitable organisation who
provide assistance to those in need living within the old parish
boundaries (i.e. Burham Village and parts of Blue Bell Hill).
Every year they give grants towards the Winter Fuel costs of retired
villagers on restricted incomes.
They can also offer one off grants to help alleviate particular
instances of hardship.
Parents of school age children may obtain help with some of the costs
associated with schooling.
If you, or someone you know, is on a low income or has an exceptional
need which is not provided for by Welfare Benefits, we may be able to
help.

FILM CLUB Our chosen film for June is The Jolsen Story. We start at 7.30pm and at the end of the film, coffee, tea and biscuits are served. Do come along and join us on Wednesday June 3rd. We ask for a donation of £1 which goes
towards our month’s charity CHARITIES £250 has been sent from our activities in March and April to
a local charity, the Dandelion Trust which helps disadvantaged children and their families. For the next two months we will support Shelter Box which is an organisation which prepares boxes with emergency supplies for immediate use following disasters. At the moment they are sending
boxes to Nepal following the devastating earthquakes.

'WHY I LOVE MY VALLEY' SUCCESS
It was perhaps fitting that the top prize in the inaugural Tri-History Arts Project
or ‘Why I Love My Valley’ competition should be won by Wouldham Primary
School, currently celebrating its 150th year.
The event, co-sponsored by Peters Village developer Trenport Investments Ltd
and its site contractor Bam Nuttall, offered a total of £3,500 worth of prize
money to the primary schools of the three villages next to the new 1,000-home
project on the east bank of the River Medway.
With individual cash prizes and a £2,000 jackpot offered for a ‘whole school’
entry, the schoolchildren threw themselves into an artistic frenzy in January,
mentored by Charles Newington – Kent-based creator of the giant chalk-cut
horse on the Downs near Folkestone – and his associate Colleen Dunn.
At the prizegiving last week (April 29) – where local MP Tracey Crouch took
time out from a busy pre-election schedule to make the presentations - Mr
Newington said he had been amazed by the quality and creativity of the entries
and, like many of those involved in staging Why I Love My Valley, admitted
that he hadn’t envied the task facing the five-strong judging panel.
But the clear winner of the overall school cash prize and engraved cup was
Wouldham Primary School, for a series of historical and evocative mosaics
created on the walls of the school itself.
St Mark’s Primary School, Eccles, was the runner-up (£500 prize) with recrea-
tions drawn from Peters works including a large and spectacular replica of one
of the site’s beehive kilns, while Burham Primary School came third (£250) with
its entry 'Our Top Villages' – a map panel made from bottle tops collected and
attached by every child in the school.
Carl Fitter, Wouldham’s head teacher, was delighted his school had won in its
landmark year, but added: “I know my colleagues in the other two schools will
agree, that we get many, many invitations to enter competitions and very often
turn them down because the school and its pupils are just too busy. However,
this was one we simply could not resist. It was perfect: local, topical and
inspirational, with generous prizes.”
Asked later what the school might spend the £2,000 on, he said: “A large party
for the whole school – all of the kids have worked hard for this. The rest of the
money will go into school funds while we think of something suitable.”
The individuals’ element of the competition concentrated on Year 5 (aged 9-10)
pupils at the schools - the oldest not encumbered by 11-plus studies.
Betty Lee of Burham, won the Gold Award and £250 cash prize, plus £10
vouchers for each of her classmates. Silver plus £100 went to Hayley Dibble,
also of Burham, while Leo Phillips of St Mark’s, Eccles took bronze and £50.

On behalf of the sponsors, Trenport Director Chris Hall told all of the 60 children
representing their schools at the prizegiving: “You should all be very proud of
yourselves, and I’m delighted to hear from your teachers how interesting you all
found it.”
His counterpart at Bam Nuttall, Terry Crittenden agreed: “This work shows how
proud you are of your valley.”
Local ward councillor Roger Dalton, one of the judges, told the children: “You
made it very hard for us – I’m not just saying that. We just could not believe how
good all the creations were.”
Competition organiser and Trenport Community Liaison Manager Shirley Boards
said afterwards: “We could not be happier with how the competition developed.
Many children have spoken about how it had encouraged them to ask their
parents and grandparents more about the history of their area and relatives who
might have worked at the former Peters Lime & Cement Works – it employed
1,000 local people and operated 80 Thames sailing barges at its peak.
“In this way, the competition has started to ‘re-connect’ the people of Burham,
Eccles and Wouldham, with a part of the local area that is re-emerging under the
new name of Peters Village.
“And though we called it the 'Tri-history Arts Project' to highlight the diverse
heritage of the site – natural history, ancient history including the Bronze Age
and Romans, and rich social/industrial history from the more recent past; it was
interesting that the children themselves gravitated to the last of the three.
Ms Boards added:
“We would also like to thank our high profile independent panel of judge for
giving up their time. As we all agreed, they had a tougher task than anyone
expected.”

Burham C of E Primary
School
Term 5 was a very short but productive and busy term! We are very proud of
our Year 6 children who have worked hard all year and who recently completed
their end of Key Stage 2 SATs. At the end of SATs week they enjoyed taking
part in the VE WWII celebrations at Maidstone Girls’ Grammar School. Year 6
have also achieved a brilliant 99% attendance so far this year with the whole
school attendance currently at 96%.
Years 3 & 4 had great fun taking part in the ‘Living Land’ event held at Detling
Showground – an event which was attended by 3,000 children in total! We were
delighted by the exemplary behaviour of the children from our school.
Miss Grima & Mrs. Gordon-Ritchie have been helping a Diocese research
project looking at professionalism, faith and RE in church schools. Four children
from Year 5 also took part in Kent Standing Advisory Council for Religious
Education (SACRE)’s ‘Knowing You, Knowing Me’ event learning about, and
learning from, religion together with children from other local schools at a series
of workshops held at Canterbury Christ Church University.
The whole of Year 5 took part in the ‘Why I Love My Valley’ art competition
and children from our school won both the Gold and Silver awards for their
projects which was a fantastic achievement. The whole school took part in
creating an impressive map of ‘Our Top Villages’ made from recycled bottle

As part of their ‘Space’ topic, the Infants had a fantastic day with a visit from
the Astrodome experience. Parents, families and friends enjoyed our Family
Time Service on 22nd May which celebrated our Science Day. Our parent group
continues to meet and we greatly appreciate their feedback.
In Term 6 we look forward to coming back to an ‘Inspiring Writing’ week and
please put 11th July in your diaries as this is the date of our PTFA Summer Fair:

Wouldham C of E Primary School
We’re now officially 150 years old! Wow! Its hard to imagine the changes
that have taken place over the past 150 years and its worth stopping to
think about how Wouldham, and in deed, the world looks different to what
it would have looked like back in 1865. We have some photo evidence
from the period and as these are naturally in black and white it sometimes
makes children believe the whole world was one without colour!
We also have the school log book which gives us a record of the first days
of school and planning for the introduction of education into the village.
Since delving deeper we have discovered that the Reverend Frederick
Boyd, rector of the parish and the chairman of the school committee, was
an Oxford graduate and later became a titled Baron before dying in 1889
without a male heir.
However different the ‘world’ looked at the time, we are pretty certain that
the ‘people’ were very much the same as today with similar needs, issues,
aspirations and commitment to their families and local area. If we could
transport ourselves back to 1865, although the classroom practice would be
vastly different the principles of education to make improvement would be
just the same!
It is great to know that we are part of something far bigger than we can
ever imagine and as such we will be celebrating the occasion in style!
Firstly, we are holding a special service in the church at 9:15 for 9:30 on
Wednesday 17th June. This is the anniversary of the first recorded meeting
to establish the school and we are fortunate enough to have the chief
education officer of the Church of England come and join us. Sadly, we
can’t offer an open invite to all as the church will be full to bursting with
all the children and guests. Following the service we are sharing
refreshments and displaying some talents in the school and you are
welcome to join us for that (from 10.30 in the school hall). We are having
a ‘whole school photo’ before enjoying a picnic banquet and then an
afternoon of fun on the school field.
Part of the costs of the celebration are being met by the proceeds from
winning the recent art competition organised and sponsored by Trenport,
and all the children are to be presented with a special memento provided
by ‘The Friends of Wouldham All Saints’. Our winning ‘mosaics’ which
look so splendid on the front of the school are part of our anniversary
celebrations and if you haven’t seen them then please make the effort to
take a look.

Election News - Following on from the elections we have a new Parish

Jenny Head and Tim Fulwell who were re-elected to the Council and a
warm welcome to Roger Fitzwater, Gill Goode, Andy Marr and Daphne
Parris who join the new Council. By the time you read this a new
Chairman and Vice Chairman will have been elected at the Parish Council
Annual Council meeting on the 19th May. Please look at the Parish
Council website for further details. We also welcome back Roger Dalton
and Dave Davis, both re-elected as Borough Councillors for the ward and
Tracey Crouch, re-elected as MP for this area.
New Village Hall Fundraising Committee - The race night in April
raised a further £117. Thank you to everyone who helped organise the
event, to those who donated prizes and to everyone who attended to make
it another successful village event. Also special thanks to Alan Boakes
for your generous donation towards the fundraising. The total funds
raised for the new village hall currently stands at £2135. This all helps
towards the Lottery grant application which has been submitted and we
are currently waiting to hear if we have got through the first stage of the
application.
Well done Wouldham School! - Wouldham Primary School took part in
the Schools' art competition 'why I love my Valley' sponsored by
Trenport and BAM Nuttall, winning the first prize of £2000. Well done
to all the pupils who took part in this competition.
Peters Village - A planning application has been submitted to Tonbridge
& Malling Borough Council for phase 2 of this development. The Parish
Council will be looking at this application at the June meeting.
The next Parish Council meeting will be held on Tuesday 2nd June 2015
at Wouldham Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Members of the public are
welcome. If you are unable to attend the meeting but have a question for

JUNE IN YOUR GARDEN
‘What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young
summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier
months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its
fresh young beauty will ever fade.’
Now the days are getting longer and the lighter evening are with us for a while
longer, the single most important thing to do in June is to enjoy your garden.
Make the most of being able to enjoy the space, relax in a deckchair with a bottle
of wine, or have a bar-b-que, while the weather is agreeable, or just wander and
enjoy the colours and fragrances of the season.
By now the garden is in full bloom, perennial plants have put on their growth
and if they are not flowering already will be preparing to flower over the next
few months. This new soft growth is always the most attractive to pests such as
greenfly and also slugs and snails, so now is the time to be vigilant and regularly
check new growth for signs of infestations or attack. Most bugs such as greenfly
and blackfly can both be removed by hand by gently squashing them, or try a
mild soap solution spray, or crush some garlic & mix with water for an organic
spray option. Slugs and snails are a little more persistent, and nothing is more
disheartening than seeing your lovingly tended plants chewed to nothing more
than a stump. To keep them in check, focus your attention particularly on the
plants that the slugs like – these will likely have soft green leaves without hairs
or spikes that irritate them – by either adding a barrier such as crushed egg shells
in a generous layer around the base of the plant, or distract them by sinking ‘beer
traps’ nearby. Also be on the look-out for lily beetle – easy to spot as they are
bright red – remove them from the plant carefully as they are quick to drop to
the ground, and squash them.
Now is also the time to be planting out your dahlias, either in pots or directly
into spaces in the garden (bear in mind that it is better to lift the tubers again
before winter), and they should grow on quickly – but beware the slugs and
snails love to snack on dahlias.
Other things to be doing this month:
Prune back spring flowering shrubs such as forsythia by removing old
wood
Trim lawn edges and continue to weed & feed the lawn through the
growing season
Water pots every day and do not allow to dry out. Water the garden if
required in dry weather persists
Clean out your water butt if its empty at
any point over the summer.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
There were eight crimes reported between 23/2/15 and 22/04/15 (2 month period)
- Criminal damage to front door of premises at St Marys Walk, Burham, believed
by an air rifle. Wiper blades stolen from a vehicle parked in the car park on
Church Street, Burham. Vehicle stolen from outside an address on Rochester
Road, Burham. Tools stolen from a van parked on Whitehouse Crescent. One
vehicle stolen and another broken into and tools stolen from outside an address on
Rochester Road Burham. Head collars and horse feed stolen from a field next to
Old Church Road Burham. Making off without payment from Frosts garage.
Don’t forget to report any crimes to the Police on 101. Fantastic news!! An order has been placed for the new piece of play equipment
“Spectra” for the over 8’s age group. All being well installation should be
completed before the summer holidays

Office. Once again we have received complaints in relation to dog fouling. Please ensure
that if you own a dog that you are a responsible owner and pick up any “deposits”
and dispose of accordingly.

Hopefully, by the time this goes to print, a suggestion box will be placed in
the lobby area of the Parish Office. So if you have any suggestions or
comments in relation to Parish business, just write it down and pop it in the
box. Last financial year (April 14 – March 15), the residents generated just over
£1,570 from paper and cardboard recycling. This year we know that the funds will
be lower as we are not being paid from Smurfit’s only from KCC, so ideally we
need the cardboard bank to be utilized much more this year to keep the funds
generated on par with previous years
As a reminder, please do not park in any disabled parking spaces, unless of
course you hold a disabled blue badge.
