Dear Friends,
DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN
We are still in the Easter season of celebration. Celebration goes hand
in hand with generosity.
Archbishop Justin has written to all parishes asking us to support
Christian Aid Week which runs from 10th – 16th May.
He writes: ‘Jesus calls us to love our neighbour….as Christians, we
believe that he means our global neighbour. Across the globe there are
around a billion people in extreme poverty….This year Christian Aid
Week confronts one of the greatest injustices of all times,
discrimination against women.
Half of the world’s population are women and yet they comprise the
majority of those living in poverty today. Despite the fact that women
do the majority of the world’s agricultural work, less than 20% of
landholders globally are women. Around the world, women are paid
less than men – in most countries, women earn on average only 60-
75% of men’s wages. At every level….women are poorer,
disadvantaged, more vulnerable.
In Kenya, Burundi, India and elsewhere, local churches promote micro
-finance opportunities for women to build their own small businesses.
In Zambia, Brazil, Papua New Guinea and many other places, the
church works with local communities to end gender-based violence.
Throughout the Anglican Communion, the Mothers’ Union works
tirelessly on promoting women’s literacy, economic development and
leadership roles. All these examples bring dignity and strength to
women, helping to restore gender relationships to one of equality.
Many such initiatives are run in partnership with Christian Aid’.
Our community plays its part in bringing justice to the world’s poorest
people. In Christian Aid Week in this parish, volunteers will be
delivering envelopes and making door-to-door collections. Please pray,
please give generously and do let us know if you would like to be a
volunteer with the door-to-door collecting.
In peace, Mike

Churchyard Working Group Lately we’ve had a really good response for the working
parties in Wouldham churchyard. Thank you to all those
who took part. We would like to have a group of people
who come together on a regular basis to clear ivy and
weeds, tend to uncared-for graves, as well as carrying out
other specified tasks. This will help complement the grass-
cutting activity and keep the churchyard in good order. This work could
also be done alone at a time to suit you.

THE PEW CUSHION PROJECT AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH
This project is proceeding well and anyone interested in joining the
needle workers will be very welcome. We are working tapestry cushions
for the pews in memory of loved ones. The finished cushion will carry a
permanent label with the name of the donor and/or to whom it is dedi-
cated together with the name of the person who has worked the cushion.
Contributors will be contacted when their cushion is ready and informed
at which Service it will be dedicated.
Each cushion measures 52ʺ x 13ʺ and costs £170. Sharing the cost with
others who have expressed an interest is possible so contributions over
£30 are gratefully received. The cushions are worked by volunteers as it is
a non-profit making activity.
Can you help by making a donation to the scheme? Thank you.

THE WI & BURHAM WALKERS
We have now been meeting up to walk on the last
Wednesday of the month for 18 months and enjoyed
various routes around the area in all weathers for between
4 and 5 miles. There are usually between 15 to 20 of us in
the Group. We leave at 10.30 and arrive back at about 2.30 -3pm.
This month seventeen of us met up at Hucking Woodland Trust car park on a
really beautiful sunny morning and enjoyed a lovely walk through the meadows
and woods stopping to admire the wood carvings, a shepherd with his lamb
looking out over the distance, a family of boars that one of the walkers took a
real fancy to (good thing that they are too heavy) and a little later an ancient
stone age axe it was a really enjoyable walk ending back in Burham at the
Toastmasters for a pie and pint.

BURHAM UNITED CHARITIES
Burham United Charities are a local charitable organisation who
provide assistance to those in need living within the old parish
boundaries (i.e. Burham Village and parts of Blue Bell Hill).
Every year they give grants towards the Winter Fuel costs of retired
villagers on restricted incomes.
They can also offer one off grants to help alleviate particular
instances of hardship.
Parents of school age children may obtain help with some of the costs
associated with schooling.
If you, or someone you know, is on a low income or has an exceptional
need which is not provided for by Welfare Benefits, we may be able to
help.

COUNCIL’S GO-AHEAD FOR
PETERS VILLAGE HOUSING
Detailed plans for the first 152 homes at Peters Village have been
approved by Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council (TMBC).
Trenport Director Chris Hall told members of the Council’s Area 3
Planning Committee that construction could start in August and: “By late
2015/early 2016, new residents will be able to move in.
“The scheme will eventually deliver 1,000 homes and it is important that
this first phase sets a high quality tone. We have listened to the views of
the local community in developing these proposals, with detailed matters
including building heights and parking.”
Keen to create the blueprint for a new community that is visually
interesting and characterful, Trenport has opted for a careful and varied
mix of properties comprising 28 2-bed apartments and 124 houses, with
the latter breaking down into 16 2-bed, 75 3-bed and 33 4-bed homes.
This phase includes an important section of the Medway riverside which,
with its waterside walkway and bespoke lighting, is on course to be a
showpiece for the entire all-new community.
Mr Hall said after the meeting: “We worked closely with TMBC to
ensure Phase 1 sets the right template on design and quality.”
* With Phase 1 now given the green light, Trenport has followed up with
a similar application to TMBC for Peters Village: Phase 2, adding 157
more homes and including 65 of the first affordable housing stock, being
developed under arrangement with the Guinness Partnership housing
association.

POLICING ROLE
SECURED FOR
ALL OF 2015
Trenport has helped extend a
vital police post covering a patch
that includes Peters Village and
neighbouring Burham, Eccles
and Wouldham.
PSCO Kim Lidbury (right)
with dog handler Jo Kenny
and her dog Brynn
This cover aims to deter environmental and rural crime across the
Medway Gap area – the point where the Kent river cuts through the scarp
slope of the North Downs – and has been supplied by Police Community
Support Officer (PCSO) Kim Lidbury for the past two years.
Her post is additional to the PCSOs provided through conventional
neighbourhood policing and had been funded entirely by members of the
successful Securing the Landscape Partnership (STLP) co-ordinated by
the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty including Trenport,
local companies, councils and partnerships and some private donations.
However, the PCSO role was to have been withdrawn at this point but,
thanks to fresh donations, PCSO Lidbury will continue in her role at least
until the end of 2015.
Trenport Community Liaison Manager Shirley Boards said: “Kim has
proven to be a highly effective officer, cracking down on known
problems, and being proactive against new crime hotspots as they arose.
“Had her role not been extended there was a real risk that the types of
crime and antisocial behaviour previously experienced, which Kim has
helped greatly to reduce, would start to rise.”

Spring is upon us! I hope all the hidden Easter eggs have been found in
the gardens!
WOULDHAM COMMON is looking particularly pretty at the moment
with all the spring flowers. Time to take a walk on the Pilgrims Way with
family & friends.
THE RECREATION GROUND - as the weather improves we are
planning to gravel & rake the car park. Notices will let people know when
this is happening. We will also put gravel on the pathway to the
allotments.
HORSES- Horses are legally allowed on roads but not pavements. The
rider must follow the High Way Code. If the horses leave deposits maybe
the gardeners amongst us could use the deposits round their rose bushes.
PARKING ISSUES- There are still problems with cars parking on
pavements in Oldfield Drive. If a wheelchair cannot get through on a
pavement this is classed as an OBSTRUCTION. Wouldham Parish
Council are seeking advice from TMBC about this very serious problem
which may end up with us getting yellow lines.
VILLAGE HALL - The request for lottery funding has now been
submitted. Thank you to Alison for all her work.
RECYCLING- we are still awaiting news on the plastic recycling bin.
COMMUNITY PAY BACK - if you have any spades, loppers, bow saws
or pruning saws we would be very grateful.
The BMX track has been mown.
The next meeting will be on 19th May which will be our AGM.
Meanwhile we have elections coming up on 7th May. So good luck to
everyone.

is on holiday.

MAY IN YOUR GARDEN ‘The flower doesn’t dream of the bee,
it blooms and the bee comes.’
Spring has finally sprung, the daffodils have put on their
show, the spring bedding is just starting to go over and the
lawn mowing is now well underway. Its not too late to apply a lawn
dressing to help remove the weeds and moss that may have built up over
the winter, but once the warm weather arrives the routine of mowing,
raking over to remove the dead thatch underneath the surface and
application of a liquid feed can commence in earnest to provide the lush
green lawns that are the envy of your neighbours.
Summer flowers and bedding will now be available and it’s time to plant
out Lily and Dahlia bulbs to create the colourful focal points within the
garden. It’s also not too late to sow some flower seed, either in seed trays
for late summer flowers, or direct into the soil for early summer plants.
Cosmos, Calendula, Nicotiana, Antirrhinum (Snap Dragons) &
Nasturtiums will all provide summer colour and help to attract the bees.
Spring is also a good time to provide habitats for your friendly bugs such
as bees and ladybirds. By building a simple ‘bug-hotel’ in a quiet spot at
the back of your garden, using old twigs, bricks and corrugated card, it
will provide a habitat for a number of helpful pests, which will in turn
help to keep the less desirable pests to a minimum.
Now that the evenings are lighter it is the perfect opportunity to make the
most of your garden, enjoy an evening stroll around, and perhaps do a
little dead-heading as you go to help encourage plants to keep flowering.
Other things to be doing this month:
Wash down the patio tables and chairs, & check that your BBQ is ready
for the first opportunities of the season. Don’t forget to water pots as they
will dry out quickly in dry spells. Same goes for your seedlings and cut-
tings – keep a close eye to make sure they are properly watered and well
ventilated for strong growth & to prevent pests & diseases taking hold.
Plant up hanging baskets and pots to decorate the front of your house or
your patio area. These also make great gifts for the less green-fingered.
Don’t forget to hoe – keeping the weeds down before they have a chance
to take hold will reap rewards as the season progresses.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Elections 2015: Burham’s Parish results were uncontested, which basically
means that we had less persons nominated than those seats available. (8seats
available and only 6 names put forward). The six, who are: Roger Dalton, Bill
Stead, Bill Frost, Dave Young, Keith Mather and Wendy Neath are therefore
automatically elected. Co-option will take place for the two vacant seats. Keep
an eye on the notice boards for details. Best wishes to those Councillor’s who
decided not to re-stand.
Don’t forget to report any crimes to the Police on 101 A few residents have asked if the crime figures for Burham can be included in
the Parish Magazine, so as of next month, subject to availability from the Police,
they will be included.
The new piece of play equipment “Spectra” is still going forward, subject to
funding. Some funding has been secured and we are awaiting confirmation
on other funding. Advice on this other funding should be received within
the next 4/6 weeks. Fingers crossed. Highway Matters: If you see a pot hole or a street light not working properly or
anything that relates to Highways, give me a call and I will report it to Kent
Highway Services.
As hopefully you have noticed, further planting has taken place in the war
memorial gardens. The Parish Council would like to formally thank all
those involved. Don’t forget to recycle all your recyclable items. Cardboard, paper, cans, plastic
bottles, all glass can be recycled at the Village Hall site. The site is very well
used by residents. Cardboard and paper generates funds for the community via
the Parish Council, so please recycle as much as possible.
The plans for the road changes/improvements/alterations are now pinned
up in the Parish Building, so if you would like to see them, give me a call or
just pop in. The Parish Office is generally open Mon – Fri 10am – 2 pm.
We do have a very good working relationship with BAM Nuttall (the
contractors), so if you have any queries and I don’t know the answers, I
know “a man” that does.
If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss, just give
me a call on my new number 01634 685936, e-mail me on:
[email protected] or come along to the monthly meetings, normally held
the last Monday of the month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 18
