Dear Friends,
November starts our season of long winter nights after the clocks have
been changed. There are memories of cold nights with the smell of autumn
leaves and lighting a bonfire, some fireworks and having mugs of hot soup.
Sue (page 21) quotes us: ‘Dull November brings the blast, then the leaves
are whirling fast.’ She tells us how to prepare our gardens and plots for the
winter and also to provide some cheery winter colour and plan for next
year. On the subject of gardening, there is some interesting garden news
from the residents of Winchester House Care Home (page 19) where
volunteers from the community have got involved.
If we’re starting to feel chilly, the ‘Home Heat Helpline’ ( page 27) offers
some important advice about keeping warm and Burham United Charities
invite applications for Winter Fuel Grants ( page 8).
Of course November brings us Remembrance Day when we remember all
those in the armed forces who have given their lives and been injured in
action. There are services in both Burham and Wouldham (page 3) and we
can contribute as usual by buying poppies to support the work of the
British Legion. Our villages have shown they are always most generous
with their support.
November seems to turn our thoughts to preparing for Christmas and there
are plenty of village Christmas events inside these pages to help - not only
to find Christmas gifts and food but also as nice opportunities to meet up
with friends and acquaintances. I see I was commenting this time last year
about the pressure of advertising on us to ‘BUY, BUY, BUY’ for
Christmas. I feel that the expectations of Christmas can of course make
very real pressure and I heard Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury
speak out then about “the absurd and ridiculous secular ‘over-the-topness’
of Christmas”. I certainly think we can start to feel that at this time of year.
There is a fascinating local history uncovered and revealed to many who
were able to attend the presentations on ‘ The Archaeology of Peters
Village’ (page 16) - artefacts and evidence of human works and graves
which date back to 4000 years BC!
Well, that’s it for the November news.
Best Wishes Mary Davis, Editor

PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPASSION, ACCEPTANCE, RESPONSIBILITY,
FORGIVENESS, TRUST
When this magazine goes to print we will be embarking on our first
holiday of the school year – a well-deserved break for our children and
staff alike. Term 1 has been a busy and productive one and this holiday is
the perfect chance for us all to recharge our batteries!
I have recently had the pleasure of showing round several new parents of
children wishing to join our school next September. They have mentioned
how impressed they have been by how polite our children are to visitors
and we are all very proud of them for their good manners and exemplary
conduct.
Giraffe Class (Year 6) visited Knole House in Sevenoaks during October
as part of their curriculum work on the Tudors which they greatly enjoyed.
Our school’s fundraising activities continued unabated during October.
Staff and parents wore pink to support Breast Cancer Now's fundraising
campaign in October to help researchers keep finding new ways to stop
breast cancer. Voluntary donations were contributed throughout the day
and during our parent consultation afternoon.
Also in October our children led the promotion of a fancy dress/cake sale
day in aid of Diabetes Day choosing to support a local group in
Maidstone. Five children led an Act of Worship giving details of their
plans for a fun day and why fundraising for this charity was close to their
hearts.
As a part of our School Improvement Plan the staff had TASC (Thinking
Activities in a Social Context) training which encourages open ended/
higher order thinking skills. Visit our website:
www.burham.kent.sch.uk to find out more and to see our slideshow
of how this was put to good use during our Multifaith Week at the start of
October (just select Newsletters, Term One from the side menu). More
photos of the children in action can be found in the photo gallery section.
Finally we wish our teacher of Dolphin Class, Miss Courtney, well during
her sabbatical and look forward to seeing her in the Spring.
As always, all updates relating to our school can be found on our website

Community fascination with archaeology earns expert’s praise
At least 250 people were keen to attend two presentations on ‘The
Archaeology of Peters Village’ held at Burham Old School Community
Centre. Such a level of interest was unprecedented, according to Chris
Clarke of CgMs Consulting, commissioned by Peters Village developer
Trenport to manage archaeological investigations:
“On a development the size of Peters Village we would normally expect
no more than 50 people at a presentation about the site’s archaeology. So
it is great to hear that upwards of 250 people attended or were interested
in attending to learn some history of their local area.”
Mr Clarke added that archaeologists had studied the site for ten years,
physically moving onto it last year, six months prior to construction, to
focus on ten areas of excavation, extending from Court Road, Burham, to
near the riverside location of the former Peters Lime & Cement Works –
the brown field site for the new Peters Village community. “So, contrary
to popular belief, it is not some last minute rush, with archaeologists
called in as the developers move their machines onsite,” he said.
Those attending on Sept 14 and Oct 5, heard a fascinating story of how
the Peters Village site’s prime transport location on the River Medway
made it important from Neolithic through to Roman times.
Isca Howell, Senior Archaeologist at MOLA (Museum of London
Archaeology) described how his team found many artefacts such as coins,
pottery and even graves, but the real excitement was evidence of human
works, such as a Neolithic ‘causeway enclosure’ – a sure sign of major
habitation around 4,000 years BC – near the new line of Court Road. continued ......
Bronze Age
Burial -
Radiocarbon
date
1010–830 BC
17
continued ......
“It’s not clear whether these structures were ceremonial or defensive,” he
said. “But there are 70 across the country, and they may have had a life
span of just a few generations. What we can say is that these were
remarkable monuments created long before the Egyptian Pyramids.”
Bronze Age remains were found near Court Road and Church Street,
suggesting extensive habitation/settlement too, but curiously little ........
evidence was found of Iron Age habitation apart from a Greek-style coin,
dating from around 100BC - an example of the earliest coinage found in
Britain.
With the arrival of the Romans in 43AD, came evidence of field systems
on the rich alluvial flood plain beside the Medway and, in addition to the
known Roman villa near Burham, the Peter Village excavations found
another development near Bell Lane, notably a ditch, postholes left by a
possible defensive palisade, and a trackway or crude road, though
research suggests that the Roman presence was in the form of estates and
sub-estates rather than villages and towns.
Mr Howell said the timeline then jumps really to mediaeval times and the
founding of the estate that became Wouldham Manor in the Tudor
era - one of the best mediaeval artefacts found being a horse pendant.
The local landscape then underwent dramatic change in the late 1800s as
the cement industry boomed, leading to the construction of Peters Works,
in its heyday one of the largest of its kind in the world, with 1,000
workers and a fleet of 80 barges making full use of the Medway’s value
as a transport main artery.
*Among those attending the archaeology evenings, were three
descendants of the Peters family who traced their connection only
recently. If you want to read their story and their appeal for more
information, or of Trenport’s desire to learn about other families’
connection with the former works, please log onto:

BARCHESTER CARE AWARDS
On Wednesday 30th September, staff from Winchester House Care Home,
Wouldham travelled north to Manchester for the ‘Barchester In Bloom
Competition 2015’ for the category of “Most Improved Garden”.
The Memory Lane patio areas had undergone a total revamp with the help
of residents, staff and volunteers from the local community: Gwen &
Dennis Worcester and Janice Emmott, transforming them into themed
areas of the seaside and the countryside. The idea behind the project was
to create an easily accessible area that was both tranquil and calm but also
one that stimulated all the senses, with water features’, herb garden and
painted murals on the walls. The judges were very impressed with how
this venture had brought everyone together and the end results were out-
standing. Winchester House were announced as winners of this category
and were awarded a trophy and certificate by Charlie Dimmock of Ground
Force and also the CEO of Barchester – Peter Calveley. The activities
team – Sheila and Sara at Winchester House were grateful to all those who
contributed to this wonderful achievement and also to Sue Simmons the
General Manager for all her help and support throughout.

November in Your Garden
‘Dull November brings the blast, then the leaves are whirling fast.’
As the garden dies down for the winter months, now is the
time to do your final clearing & tidying jobs whilst there are
still fine dry days, and before the ground becomes too wet to
walk on. Use the brighter days to finish cutting back those
perennial plants that are looking untidy, and rake up any last leaves that
have fallen. This will help to keep the lawns clear and prevent some pests
such as slugs and snails from over-wintering around your garden too. Now
is also the time to bring slightly tender plants such as Fuschias into the
greenhouse or shed to give them added winter protection. Failing that, the
pots can be wrapped in bubble wrap and moved to a less exposed location,
and placing pots together to create their own micro-climate will also help.
Take time to also enjoy the early winter light, the misty mornings with the
dew on seedheads or spiders-webs are always a wonderous natural sight
that is short-lived through the season.
There is still an opportunity for winter colour in the garden too, the smiling
faces of Pansies and Violas, together with the many pink & white hues of
Cyclamen, available in garden centres now, can be planted out into borders
or pots to give colour right through until February, by which time early
narcissus and hellebores will be starting their displays. November is also
the time to finish planting Tulips ready for their spring/summer displays.
They can be planted in pots for the patio, or in plastic pots sunk into
borders that can then be lifted once the display has finished, just remember
to add plenty of grit in both as tulips prefer well drained soil. There are
now some excellent collections and choices of tulips available, which will
provide an added burst of colour in late spring.
Don’t forget the wildlife now that winter is upon us, keep the bird feeders
topped up, and use any twigs & branches from your prunings to create a
log pile in a secluded area at the back of the garden. This will encourage
the beneficial insects such as ladybirds & hoverflies to overwinter in your
garden & give you a head start on pest control early in the year!!
Other things to be doing this month:
Continue to review your garden requirements for next year –
make a list of your likes & dislikes around the garden.
Cover brassicas to protect from hungry pigeons. Sow sweet peas in
modules for early planting. Sow broad beans for early crops.
Clean garden tools & pots ready for use next year. Sue Durrani, Secretary of the Allotment, Association, Wouldham

‘HOME HEAT HELPLINE’ OFFERS ADVICE TO
TONBRIDGE & MALLING RESIDENTS
With winter just around the corner, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council
is reminding residents who are worried about staying warm to call the
Home Heat Helpline (0800 33 66 99) for help with their energy bills.
Home Heat Helpline is a free, impartial and confidential service that
provides advice on rebates; grants for insulation and new boilers; and tips
on saving energy. In Tonbridge and Malling, some residents may also be
eligible for help towards the cost of insulation and/or a new boiler.
For more details on the Warm Homes Scheme, visit
www.kent.gov.uk/warmhomes or call 0800 170 1174.
Cllr Jill Anderson, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s Cabinet
Member for Housing and Environment Services, said: "As the weather gets
colder, some residents may start to worry about how they are going keep
their homes warm over the winter months but there is support available.
This is where a call to the Home Heat Helpline on 0800 33 66 99 can really
help. The key thing is to make sure people know where to go for advice
and this is where we can all help by looking out for neighbours, friends or
relatives who may be in difficulty so that they are aware of the Home Heat
Helpline too."
Lawrence Slade, spokesperson for Home Heat Helpline, said: “If anyone is
concerned about keeping their home warm they should call our free
Helpline on 0800 33 66 99 or visit www.homeheathelpline.org.uk.
Thousands of people are entitled to some kind of help so they’ve got
nothing to lose and possibly lots to gain by getting in touch.”
There are also some simple steps that people can take in reduce energy
consumption at home. For example:
Keep the heat in. A third of the cost of heating a home is lost through the
walls, so insulating them is the best way to save energy in the home.
Installing cavity wall insulation can save up to £160 per year on bills.
Look up. Laying the loft with 10 inches/25 centimetres of insulation can
save a quarter of a home’s heating costs. -
See the light. Replacing just one old light bulb with an energy saving
recommended one can reduce lighting costs by up to £78 over the lifetime
of the bulb. Plus they last up to 12 times longer than ordinary light bulbs.
Get on down. Turning the thermostat down by 1˚C could cut bills by up to
10 per cent. Your thermostat should be set at the lowest comfortable
setting – typically 21˚C for the living room and 18˚C for the bedroom.
