Dear Friends,

CLIMATE CHANGE PILGRIMAGE –

WALKING TO PARIS

On Nov 28th world leaders gather in Paris to seek

agreement on proposals to reduce carbon emissions.

All of us are affected by extreme weather conditions

associated with climate change but the poorest people in

the world are often the worst affected by flooding and

drought and storms. Churches seek to follow Jesus in

solidarity with the poor.

The Church Commissioners have already begun coal

disinvestment and the Church of England is committed

to supporting the climate talks by prayer and also with a

Pilgrimage which begins in London on Nov 13th. Those

on the pilgrimage will walk to Paris over the course of

two weeks, via Newhaven and ferry to Dieppe.

They will join with members of other churches in Paris

on Nov 27th.

The aim is to strengthen and encourage those taking part

in the Paris talks to reach fair, accountable and firm

commitments which will change the way we act and

move towards a low carbon economy.

Local churches are encouraged sign up for the walk or to

walk with the pilgrims for some of the way or to gather

and cheer them on.

Details of this event can be found on

www.pilgrimage2paris.org.uk

Locally, Prayers for the Climate are held on the first

Monday of every month at 11am at Aylesford Church

which all are welcome to join in with.

In peace, Mike

PRIMARY SCHOOL

What a wonderful summer it has been! The weather

has been (for the most part) glorious and we hope all

our staff, children and families have been enjoying the

well-earned break.

Believe it or not, September is already here and we are looking forward to

welcoming back our staff and children. An especially warm hello and

welcome to all of the children who are joining our school for the first time,

both in Panda Class (Year R) and in other classes throughout the school.

Our children and staff will do our best to make you all feel very welcome

and are sure that you will have settled in in no time! We are delighted to

note that our Reception intake is almost at capacity this year.

No sooner are we back then the work begins in earnest. Some of our Year

6 children will be taking the Kent Test (11+) on Thursday 10th September

and the Medway Test on Saturday 19th September. We wish all of the

children taking these tests the very best of luck.

At the end of this month (week beginning 28th September) we are looking

forward to holding our Multicultural Week which last year proved to be

very popular with our children. The children's work will be exhibited in

the hall on Friday 2nd October and parents and families will be invited to

our Family Time to have the opportunity to see and hear about what the

children have been making, creating and learning about during this fun

and busy week.

An advance notice: our Harvest Festival will be held in Burham Church,

Church Street at 9:30am on Thursday 1st October. All are welcome.

As outlined in the last magazine, our action plan for the coming year is to

further build on our achievements and to move our school towards

achieving ‘outstanding’ status.

Please do get in touch if you are considering our school for your child and

we will be delighted to welcome you and show you round. As always, all

updates relating to our school can be found on our website

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Welcome back after the summer break. We hope you all had a good summer and

the children had a lovely break from school! The new “Spectra” play unit has

now been installed for a few months and is well used.

The Archaeology of Peters Village (arranged by Trenport) has been

arranged for 14 September, Old School Community Centre. Numbers were

restricted and places allocated before the leaflets were pinned up. Trenport

hope to arrange a 2nd presentation. Keep an eye on the noticeboards.

The “Spur road sweeping curve” from the old and new Court Roads will be

changed to a “give way” and the hedge removed to improve sight lines but

replanted further back. Whilst its old news now, we have changed the card-

board/paper recycling to another company, DS Smith. Whilst still charging

for each uplift, it also pays the Parish Council per ton. So please can you

squash down cardboard so that more can be inserted for each uplift.

Small changes have taken place in Church Street and the car park security

is being looked at. It may well be addressed by now.

Southern Water are in the process of addressing security around Burham

reservoir including new signage and extended fencing. Work was carried out

by a local farmer to trees and shrubbery along Rochester Road from the Bakery

up towards the Chinese. Crime figures: Crimes reported between 15/05/2015

and 24/06/2015 which are the latest figures available. YY/012412/15 – criminal

damage to ornamental telephone kiosk Rochester Road, Burham. Perspex

windows damaged. YY/012099/15 – Attempt burglary at Stables, Pilgrims Way,

Burham. Unknown persons have attempted to gained entry without success.

YY/011965/15 – Vehicle damaged whilst parked in residents car park Brisleys

Row, Burham. Wing mirror casing ripped off. YY/011835/15 – Burglary on

BAM construction site, containers forced into and power tools stolen.

YY/011493/15 – Theft from motor vehicle parked in Church Street car park,

entry gained and fuel pump stolen. Various small gas canisters and balloons

found in Church Street car park.

As a reminder, the recycling area is for recycling only. Please do not dump

your rubbish in the area. Any fly-tipping will be reported to TMBC and

appropriate action taken. Also, please can we remind dog owners to pick up

their dogs mess. Most owners are very responsible, but there’s still a few

which do need reminding now and again

If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss, just

give me a call on my new number 01634 685936, e-mail me on

[email protected] or come along to the monthly meetings, normally

HOUSE CONSTRUCTION MOVES CLOSER AT PETERS VILLAGE

Peters Village developer Trenport is

close to awarding the contract to build

the first batch of new homes at the site,

on the east bank of the River Medway

near Wouldham.

Those who have already used the

Trenport website (www.trenport.co.uk) to register an interest in the 152 homes of

Phase1 will have their details forwarded to the, as yet, unnamed housebuilder, who will

obviously handle the sales. Once the housebuilder is named, we will also publish its

contact details online, so that would-be buyers can get in direct touch.

The approved plans for the Phase1 homes were originated by Trenport itself, with the

intention of setting a premium benchmark right at the start of the housebuilding process,

and will then be formally adopted by the first housebuilder.

Trenport Director Chris Hall explained: “The Peters Village scheme will eventually

deliver 1,000 homes and it is important that this first phase sets a high quality tone. We

have listened to the views of the local community in developing these proposals, with

detailed matters including building heights and parking.” Trenport has actually exceeded

car parking guidelines from Kent County Council by some margin: 313 spaces –

including 44 on-street communal or visitors’ slots – to serve the 152 Phase1 homes.

Keen to create the blueprint for a new community that is visually interesting and

characterful, Trenport has opted for a careful and varied mix of properties comprising

28 2-bed apartments and 124 houses, with the latter breaking down into 16 2-bed,

75 3-bed and 33 4-bed homes.

ARCHAEOLOGY EVENING

By popular demand, an extra date has been added to an evening presentation of the

history surrounding the Peters Village site - 7.0pm, Monday 5 October 2015.

at Burham Old School Community Centre, Rochester Road, Burham.

‘The Archaeology of Peters Village’, presented by the Museum of London

Archaeology in conjunction with CgMs - heritage consultants to Peters Village

developer Trenport Investments – was over-subscribed almost immediately it was

announced. Shirley Boards, Trenport’s Community Liaison Manager, explained: “As

with any such event, you have a likely target audience and number in mind, but we were

pleasantly surprised by the level of enthusiasm and interest in this topic. “As a result, the

original 90 seats on offer just couldn’t satisfy demand and Trenport has boosted the

original budget to allow for a second evening a few weeks’ later” Admission is free, but

all seats are on a pre-registered basis on a first come, first served basis - on application

to: (email) [email protected] or call 01233 721575

‘The Archaeology of Peters Village’ is designed to peel back the many fascinating layers

of history at the Peters Village development site, from the Stone and Bronze Ages,

through the Roman and Mediaeval eras and up to the site’s more recent industrial past

when what is now called Peters Village, was the site of the former Peters Lime &

Cement Works, once one of the largest chalk quarrying operations in the area. At its

peak, it employed 1,000 people and operated 80 barges

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL Firstly I would like to introduce myself, my name is Nicky Grimes and I am the

new Council Clerk. It looks like you will be seeing my name on a lot of letters

and notices from the Council.

BUS SERVICE. Following the Council meeting on July 7th, a meeting was held

on July 15th between Arriva, KCC, TMBC and Wouldham PC. Wouldham’s

response to the conclusion of that meeting has been put on the local notice-

boards but a brief outline is that some additional double yellow lines are

required for a free flowing bus service with some other yellow lines shortened.

The object is to minimise the loss of parking spaces in Wouldham whilst

enabling the buses to get through. There will be public consultation before any

of the work is started but the result is that Arriva have agreed to keep the buses

running through the High Street.

WOULDHAM SCHOOL have announced plans for moving/enlarging the

school, there will be a 4 week public consultation on the plans when in place.

POSTERS. If you put posters around the village to advertise a function, please

can you remove them afterwards to keep the village clean and tidy.

REPORT CRIMES. If you are witness to any crimes in Wouldham please can

you report them to the Police, it contributes to the stats and improves our

allocation of resources. Our PCSO’s name is Jo-Anne Tiller 07772226153.

2016 CALENDAR. If anyone has any photos of the village they think would

look lovely in the Village Calendar please could you send them to :

FOOTPATHS. If whilst doing your front garden you would care to have a go at

the footpath in front of your property, this would help the village maintain its

good looks and make you look good too!

September in Your Garden

‘September gardens are grief and glory, rolled into one last

hurrah before Autumn winds roll in.’

What a wonderful summer it has been, but with the heat also comes the drought

which has seen borders and lawns suffer through lack of water. Like many, I

have been harvesting waste water to use in the garden to increase the plants

chance of survival, and will continue to do so whilst the dry weather persists.

The need to mow the lawns will have reduced, especially in the dry conditions,

but once autumn sets in it’s the ideal time to tackle any weeds that may have

colonised. Using a proprietary autumn weed & feed product will stand the lawn

in good stead for the winter months, and together with a quick tidy of the edges

will keep the lawn looking trim over winter.

As the nights now begin to draw in, the garden mellows into hues of burnt

oranges and plums, and the colourful summer borders begin to die back.

Depending on your style of gardening, you can choose to leave flower heads to

provide interest through the winter (and to collect or scatter any last remaining

seeds that will spring to life next year), or you can continue to dead head and cut

back spent stems to create a clear backdrop to any evergreen plants that will

continue to provide winter interest.

Now is also the time to be thinking about spring colour as early autumn is the

ideal time to be planting spring flowering bulbs. Garden centres will have a good

selection, but for increased variety online catalogues will have a far wider

selection so why not try something different.

The vegetable garden should also still be producing plenty of produce, with

tomatoes, courgettes, salads and beans (runners and French) all still going

strong, and the cabbages and Brussel sprouts showing the promise of harvests to

come. Tree fruit should also be ripe, but may ripen at different times – to test if

they’re ready for picking lightly lift to one side – if the stalk separates from the

tree then it’s ready to pick, and who can resist apple & blackberry crumble in

autumn.

Other things to be doing this month:

Net ponds before autumn leaf fall starts

Continue to water pots and hanging containers, even if it rains

Clean out cold frames and greenhouses so they’re ready for

overwintering tender plants

Plant herbaceous perennials in borders whilst the soil is still warm, or

split existing herbaceous plants to make more of your stock.
