Dear Friends, I’ve had to take a big deep breath and dive back into the magazine after
the summer break which has been lovely and sunny although with plenty
of showers—coming at the wrong time I’m sure for some but great for the
garden and, I guess, the crops. It’s brought on an early harvest and, I find,
there’s an abundance of hedgerow blackberries. So the cupboards have
been restocked with wonderful blackberry jam.
Many people will be getting back to work after relaxing holidays—some
in far flung places and others closer to home. So it’s a matter of getting
the brain back in gear again.
I always think of September as a time for new starts with our very little
children starting school for the first time and the older children moving up
to senior school or college and some preparing to go off to university. It
takes quite a bit of adaption for parents also as the children move on and
out.
As usual there is quite a bit going on in the villages. The old churches will
be open on 13th September to welcome the cyclists and walkers going
from church to church on ‘The Ride & Stride’ and raising funds to keep
the old churches in repair. Rev. Mike Hayes will be taking part—would
you be able to sponsor him. (See page 3)
There’s going to be a concert (page 6) at the All Saints Church with Toni
Lee as guest singer which promises to be a special evening—so get your
tickets in good time. Also snap up your tickets in advance for a table of 6
at Ken’s popular Quiz which is planned for October (page 5). Take a look
through the magazine —there are lots of opportunities to meet others,
perhaps volunteer and have a good time.
This is a good opportunity to say some things about our free monthly
magazine. Firstly we have lost quite a number of our advertisers recently
and as our printing costs are largely covered by our advertising, we are
feeling the effects. You could say that we are victim to our success
because as the businesses get more work they find no need to advertise.
The magazine is delivered to every house in Burham & Wouldham.
People are also often ringing me to ask if I know of local tradesmen. So if
you would like to advertise with us, you will find details on page 25. Just
get in touch with me. Secondly it would be good to receive more items for
the magazine—e.g. about gardening and allotments, wildlife, local history
etc, etc. It’s a matter of giving the magazine a new start and giving it a bit
of a lift. Best wishes Mary Davis

REPAIRS TO ALL SAINTS CHURCH, WOULDHAM
Over the centuries, repairs have
constantly been needed to All
Saints Church, Wouldham to
maintain it as the beautiful parish
church that it is and on into the
future.
Church of England churches are
inspected every five years to
ensure that they are safe and in a
good state of repair and we were pleased to receive a good report saying
that we have looked after our church well. However, wear and tear has
taken its toll as it has done over the centuries. Now there are repairs
needed to the guttering, stonework and woodwork by specialist
stonemasons and craftsmen.
Parishioners have been generously donating to the repair fund year by
year at our fundraising events but an amount in the range of £40,000 is
still required to complete the repairs. If you can make a donation (no
matter how small) it would mean we can keep our beautiful, old and
historic church standing for many more years to come and appreciated by
everyone.
Donations by cheque are payable to ‘Burham and Wouldham PCC’.
Please contact one of the Church Wardens if you can ‘Gift Aid’ as this is
appreciated. If you want to donate cash, envelopes are be provided.

THE PEW CUSHION PROJECT AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH
This project is proceeding well and anyone interested in joining the
needle workers will be very welcome. We are working tapestry cushions
for the pews in memory of loved ones. The finished cushion will carry a
permanent label with the name of the donor and/or to whom it is
dedicated together with the name of the person who has worked the
cushion. Contributors will be contacted when their cushion is ready and
informed at which Service it will be dedicated.
Each cushion costs £170 which covers materials for one pew cushion
only. Sharing the cost with others who have
expressed an interest is possible so contributions
over £30 are gratefully received. The cushions are
worked by volunteers as it is a non-profit making
activity. Can you help by making a donation to the scheme? Thank you.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Vandalism on the recreation ground - Back in July some of the play
equipment suffered vandalism with paint. The Parish Council were
looking to get the damage repaired through its insurance company at a
cost in the region of £2500 but thanks to a group of volunteers lead by
resident Chris Nicholas, 'operation clean up' took place to rectify the
damage. The Parish Council would like to thank Chris and all volunteers
who helped with this. This just goes to show that Wouldham does have a
fantastic community spirit. Further details and photographs can be found
on the Parish Council website.
Help to keep Wouldham tidy - it is that time of year when the weeds
are starting to rapidly grow again. If everyone could take a few minutes
to clear any weeds at the front of their property on the pavement area this
would help to keep Wouldham looking tidy.
Ball Games on Recreation Ground - Whilst the sun is shining it is great
to see the children out playing on the recreation ground. The Parish
Council would respectfully ask parents to remind their children that if
their ball goes over the wall/fence into a property backing onto the
recreation ground, that they ask permission from the owner to collect
their ball and do not climb over the wall/fence of any property. We
certainly do not want to see any damage to properties or any children
being hurt from a fall.
Dogs - The Parish Council has received reports of a few dogs being
attacked by other dogs which are off their leads on the recreation ground.
Can we therefore ask all dogs owners to be responsible with their dogs
when other dogs are around. Dog poo is still a problem in the village,
particularly in the fenced children's play area with dog poo bags now
being hung from the sign on the bin in this area. Please think about the
small children who could accidently come into contact with this.
The Parish Council has received several reports of youths hanging
around the allotment area and the farmers field at the back of Oldfield
Drive late at night trying to set fire to the straw bales. This is private
property, the bales are heavy and could hurt someone if rolled or cause
immense damage if set on fire. If residents see any incident in the village
that they are concerned about, please report it to the Police on 101.

The summer term was filled with exciting
experiences for our children. There was so much
happening that we didn’t get time to put together
an entry for this magazine so a quick recap is in
order!
We had a visit from Zoo Lab which enabled
children in Years R – 3 to experience, close-up,
various mini beasts. The children loved this opportunity and we should
like to thank our PTFA for making this possible. We also welcomed a
representative from Battersea Cats and Dogs Home who came to speak to
all our children.
Year 4 visited Holmesdale School as part of their Science Day in July and
took part in lots of interesting and fun activities and experiments! Year 5
visited Aylesford School also in July and enjoyed watching dance and
music performances by the students. We should like to thank both
Holmesdale School and Aylesford School for making us so welcome.
Tiger Class (Year 5/4) were invited to Winchester Care Home in June as
part of National Care Homes Open Day: they met the residents over tea
and cakes and took part in a Mexican wave with them.
Giraffe Class (Year 6) enjoyed a class trip to see Wicked in June (and a
meal out in London beforehand) thanks to the hard work of their Year 6
Enterprise to raise money for this trip. They were also given a special
surprise of a backstage tour!
The Juniors had a trip to Wingham Wildlife Park later in the term which
was enjoyed by all. The Infants also enjoyed a school trip to Shorne
Woods in Term 6.
Additionally in the summer term we were pleased to welcome lots of dads,
granddads and carers to our Father’s Day Lunch, organised by the school’s
catering company GSS. The school also hosted a day of dance workshops
(as part of our dance enrichment theme for Term 6) which proved very
popular with the children and they went on to produce and perform a
Family Time Dance Festival for their parents and carers at the end of term,
displaying their new skills with great effect. continued ....

After very wet weather forced an initial postponement, congratulations to
Downs House for winning Infant Sports Day and to Malling House for
winning Junior Sports Day. All of our children participated
enthusiastically and fairly and we are proud of them all.
Finally, we were incredibly proud of our Year 6 children in Giraffe Class
who won the sportsmanship trophy at the Kwik Cricket Tournament and
also our Year 6 children who took part in the inter schools Rounders
Tournament. To reiterate the message of our Leavers’ Service, we would
like to take this opportunity to wish our outgoing Year 6 Class every
success and happiness as they embark on the next stage of their learning
journey at their new secondary schools. Keep in touch – we’d love to
know how you’re getting on.
On the subject of new beginnings, we would like to welcome all children
returning to school this September and in particular those who are joining
us for the first time. We look forward to helping our new Year R class
settle in as well as all new pupils joining other year groups. We are sure
our staff and children will make you feel very welcome and help you to
settle in quickly.
We have lots of exciting opportunities and activities planned for this term
– watch this space! For updates and newsletters please see our website
www.burham.kent.sch.uk If you would like to get involved with our
PTFA please get in touch
We would like to wish all our children, staff, governors, PTFA, and
families a happy and successful school year ahead and to wish well those
of our children who are taking the Kent and Medway tests this Autumn.

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School Happy New Year!
We hope everyone has had an enjoyable, safe and healthy summer time
and have lots of experiences to share. The weather has been fairly mixed
with some fantastic times and we hope you all have been able to get out
and enjoy yourselves.
School opens for all children from Year 1 to Year 6 on Monday 8th
September and for Year R from Wednesday 10th. It is always exciting to
start a new year and we look forward to everyone being keen and ready in
their classrooms on that first morning.
‘Where We Live’ is our theme title for Otter, Fox and Badger Classes and
‘World War I’ is our theme for Caterpillar, Hedgehog and Owl. The
children will be covering lots of things underneath these umbrella titles
and we encourage families to get involved and be interested in all that we
do.
We are looking for a willing and able volunteer to join our governing
body and if this is something you feel able to commit to then please get in
touch. Governors are now ‘recruited’ depending on their skills and
experience and so if we have a number of people show an interest we will
‘appoint’ the person who has the most to offer. Being a governor doesn’t
mean you need to be an expert in education, in fact there is no need to
have any previous experience of education and schools at all. Governors
steer the strategic direction of the school and make decisions to shape the
future of the school and around resourcing rather than getting involved in
the day to day running of things. If you can spare a number of evenings a
year, are prepared to get to know the school, it’s staff and pupils and are
good at thinking creatively, able to challenge where needed and want to
make a positive difference to this wonderful community then please give
us a call.
