TREASURER VACANCY
Our present PCC (Parochial Church Council) Honorary Treasurer has moved
outside the Parish, so there is now a vacancy for the position. Previous
experience is desirable but not essential. This will involve keeping financial
records and attending PCC meetings every two months. The present
Treasurer is happy to help with a gradual handover if required.
Please contact Mrs. Janet Parris, Tel. 01795-555615

Dear Friends, We welcome Rev’d Mike Hayes as the new vicar to our Parish
and his wife Janice. Mike was installed by the Bishop at a very special
service early in September. He and Janice will not however be living at the
Rectory as they continue to live in their own house in Rochester. You will be
able to spot Mike out and about on his bike and hear him coming on his
moped! His telephone no. and email address can be found on the opposite
page.
During October there are some special events:
At the Church on October 7th (page 5), we will give thanks for the harvest at
the Harvest Festival Service and enjoy the following Harvest Lunch. During
the service we welcome gifts of produce that are suitable to be given to
people who are unfortunate to be homeless in the Medway towns.
On 22nd October, Wouldham commemorates Trafalgar Day and pays tribute
to Nelson. (page 15). The Children of Wouldham School as usual go to lay
flowers on the grave of Walter Burke. Walter Burke was the bursar on HMS
Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and it is reputed that Nelson died in his
arms. He later lived in Wouldham. Do go and be part of this special and
charming event with the children and to the short church service afterwards.
Very importantly we must use the 155 evening bus service (page 7, 13, 19)
which is being reinstated for a trial period and subsidised now by the Parish
Councils and KCC. It has a new, more user-friendly timetable. So we need to
use the bus and show that there is a continuing need for the evening service
through the villages. Go to the excellent website of -
‘Friends of the 155 Evening Bus’ at: www.155bus.co.uk.
You should take note of the Phoenix Surgery and Pharmacy opening hours
(page 17) and the dates of coming special events for your diary. (page 8).
Children and adults alike might enjoy colouring the leaves for autumn. (page
21)
Also, I particularly recommend taking an outing to SPADEWORK (page 9)
- to the Nursery, Farm Shop and Café. Be prepared for a real treat to warm
your heart!
These are just some of the items in this October Magazine and there is much,
much more inside!
Hopng that you will keep your events, news, announcements and adverts
coming in to keep us going.
Thanks, Mary Davis, Editor

Blythswood Care responds to requests for help locally and globally—
demand for clothing, bedding, shoes, etc is currently exceeding what we can
supply! We would be grateful if you would help us by passing the word
around that we URGENTLY need more clothes, bedding, shoes etc. There is
also a need for musical instruments for young people to learn, spectacles and
empty spectacle cases, hearing aids, good quality pots & pans, crockery,
cutlery — where appropriate in sets of four or more, personal CD or audio
players, sports equipment for children’s camps etc.

DONATE A PEW CUSHION AT ALL SAINTS, WOULDHAM
Our church is being furnished with beautiful new cushions in the
coming months. There will be many of you who, while unable to work
the cushions yourselves, will wish to be associated with the project by
purchasing or donating towards a cushion as a token of your
involvement, and perhaps as a memorial to a family member or friend.
You can do this by completing the details below and giving it to one of
our churchwardens with your donation. The finished cushion will carry
a permanent label recording the name of the donor (or to whom it is
dedicated), together with the name of the person by whom the cushion
was worked. ............................................................................................................................. ...........................................................................................................................................................................

THE 155 EVENING BUS SERVICE
IS TO BE REINSTATED Residents can now look forward to the reintroduction of
the evening 155 Bus Service which is routed to and from
Maidstone and Chatham through Borstal, Wouldham,
Burham, Eccles and Aylesford.
The new service starts on Monday 1st October. It will run on a new timetable
which is more user-friendly and better tied into commuter train times, work
shifts, youth activities, night life and sporting events of people who live in
our villages.
This service will be subsidised for a period of six months by the Parish
Councils of Aylesford, Burham and Wouldham as well as Kent County
Council. At the end of that time the usage of the bus will be assessed and a
decision taken on whether to continue running the evening services.
The bus service, of course, is vital to people who can’t drive and it is their
ticket to independence. It also enables people to go into the Medway Towns
and Maidstone without the worry of parking and also perhaps enjoy a drink
without having to drive home. Go to the:
FRIENDS OF THE 155 EVENING BUS Website: www.155bus.co.uk
This is an excellent website containing a wealth of information on the 155
Bus Service. For many people, of course, the bus is essential but here you
will also find some great ideas of places to go on the bus and new things to
do. Arriva’s own website is at: www.arrivabus.co.uk/southeast
The current maximum full return fare is £6.00 from either Wouldham or
Burham to Maidstone or Chatham. There are many cheaper and
concessionary fares including the elderly residents’ bus pass and Kent
Freedom Pass or 16+ card for schoolchildren and students. Regular
passengers can take advantage of Arriva’s money saving period tickets.
As an introductory offer for the month of October, Arriva have
generously offered a promotional discount of a maximum fare of £2.50
single or £4.00 return on the reinstated evening journeys only.
Each passenger journey made will carry equal weight in justifying the future
of the bus service regardless of whether money is actually paid to the driver
for a ticket. During this trial period of the 155 evening bus service, this
Magazine will feedback on how the trial is going each month.
So now it is up to us to justify the 155 evening bus and save it for the people
in the villages.

Spadework and its garden centre, farm shop and cafe can be found just outside West Malling,
on the edge of the village of Offham.
The charity was originally set up in 1984 and is today a leading provider of skills training
and work experience for over 80 adults with learning and other disabilities. The aim of
Spadework is to enable people with learning disabilities (Trainees) to develop their
independence and personal skills through social interaction with the community and to
ultimately provide them with the necessary skills to secure work placements and meaningful
paid employment.
The Trainees are involved in all aspects of Spadework. They produce the plants that are sold
in the garden centre and the fruit and vegetables served in the café and sold in the farm shop
under the supervision of an experienced Horticulturalist. They help to make cakes, jam and
chutneys and serve customers in the café and they also work in the farm shop.
The garden centre, farm shop and café are all open to the general public. Come along and
visit us at Teston Road, Offham, near West Malling, Kent. ME19 5NA and find out for
yourself what we do at Spadework.

WHAT IS THE METHODIST CHURCH
The Methodist Church is the fourth largest church in Britain after the Anglican and
Roman Catholic Churches and the Church of Scotland. Methodism has its roots in
18th century Anglicanism. Its founder, John Wesley (1703-91) was a Church of
England minister who sought to challenge the religious assumptions of the day.
During a time in Oxford, he and others met regularly for Bible Study and prayer, to
receive Communion and do acts of charity. They became known as Methodists
because of the methodical way they carried out their Christian faith.
In 1738 John Wesley had a profound spiritual experience.“I felt my heart strangely
warmed” he wrote. “I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation; an
assurance was given me that he had taken away my sins.” This experience
transformed Wesley. In 1739 he began preaching in the outdoors to crowds of
working class men and women who felt excluded from the established Church of
England. This “field preaching” became a key feature of the Revival when
thousands came to hear Wesley preach up and down the country. He formed local
societies and encouraged them to meet in smaller groups on a weekly basis but he
insisted they attend their local parish church as well. Preaching radical ideas took
great courage in those days. Wesley and his followers were denounced in print and
from pulpits, his meetings were disrupted and he was even physically attacked and
threatened with death.
John Wesley wanted the movement to remain within the Anglican Church but the
Anglican Church was keen to distance itself from him and his followers. In the end,
the increasing strength and impact made a separate Methodist Church inevitable. By
1795 Methodists in Britain became legally able to conduct marriages and perform
the sacraments. During the 1800’s as the Industrial Revolution gathered pace, the
various branches of Methodism grew rapidly. Many Trade Union leaders emerged
from Methodism towards the end of the century. The various branches of
Methodism merged in 1932 to form the Methodist Church in Britain.
The Methodist Church in Britain is divided into circuits, made up of local churches
in a defined area. The Methodist Church in Burham is part of the North Kent
Circuit, covering an area from Dartford to Sittingbourne/Sheppey and including
Maidstone. Services are held every week, led by our local Minister, Rev Dr. Gary
Watt, or by local preachers. Our services are very much based on Bible readings and
Prayer and by singing the faith through hymns both modern and traditional.
Different liturgies are used for Holy Communion.
Weddings, Baptisms, Blessings and Funerals can also take place in the Methodist
Church in Burham. Membership of the Church is not required but clearly an
appointment with the Minister will be necessary.
Please contact the Senior Church Steward, Eileen Smith, 23 Church Street.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
We are very, very pleased to advise that from 1 October 2012, the 155
evening bus service will be reinstated to a revised timetable on a trial
period only. Our thanks to all those residents that completed the
questionnaire, attended the handing in of the petition at KCC and all those
that worked very hard behind the scenes to ensure that this service was
reinstated. Well done to you all!! As previously reported, the 3 parishes
(Wouldham, Burham and Aylesford) have joint funded to a tune of £5000
towards a 6 month trial period. Please ensure that you use this service where
appropriate. It is very much a fact of USE IT or LOSE IT. It only takes on
average 6 people on every bus to ensure its future. We will, as always keep
you posted on this. Once again many thanks to all those that assisted in this
important community facility.
Finally, we are very happy to report that the SID’s were installed during
August as previously advised. There are two; one located at each end of the
village. The speed limit is 30mph through the village and if you are
exceeding this limit, the SID’s will certainly let you know.
A slight re-shuffle has taken place on the glass recycling banks to ensure
even usage. If the particular bank that you are using is full, please check the
other appropriate one before trying to squeeze in your recycling. Broken
glass is obviously very dangerous to all.
Valley of Visions has requested permission from the Parish Council to install
an interpretation panel in the car park in Church Street. This panel will
interpret the Burham Causeway Enclosure which lies east of Burham
(adjacent to Margetts Lane). It is a ceremonial Neolithic site similar in
structure to a hill fort where Neolithic tribes came together to celebrate –
now it lies underneath the fields. The panel is likely to have a reconstruction
drawing of what the site would have looked like and focus on its setting in
the landscape. The Parish Council has agreed to this, so updates will be
available over the next few months for when the panel will be erected.
Once again, we need to remind all dog owners to be responsible when
walking your dog particularly on the footpaths and recreational areas. Please
ensure that you bag and dispose of any dog poo. There are specific bins
within the village for the dog’s waste but any bin will do.
If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss, just
give me a call on 01622 609324, e-mail me on [email protected] or
come along to the monthly meetings, normally held the last Monday of the
month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 29 October 2012, 7.30
pm in the Scout Hut, Village Hall Site, Rochester Road, Burham. Pam Saunders , Clerk

The Olympics and Paralympics may seem like a distant memory now but the
legacy remains and hopefully all the inspiration to get out there and take part
in sports will still be large. The message we have been sharing with the
children throughout September has been that anything is possible – you just
need to be committed, work hard and keep on trying.
This has fitted really well with our KS2 theme of ‘Heroes and Villains’
which has seen all sorts of wonderful work to get us started. KS1 are
working just as well with the theme of ‘Bears’ and our Reception children
have managed to make a good start and are now in full time.
We were really pleased with some excellent Yr6 SATs results from the
summer with a high number of children achieving very high grades and even
two achieving our first level 6s in maths! Well done all of you and we are
sure you have settled into your secondary schools well. Our present Year 6
have got a lot of hard work to do to beat the last results but we know you can
do it!
October sees Year 4s and 5s off for a week at Swattenden Adventure Centre
and we hope the sun will shine on us.
We also have Trafalgar celebrations on Monday 22nd October (Trafalgar Day
falls on the Sunday this year!). This will be the usual flower laying and
service in the church from 9:15am – as always we encourage the community
to join us and mark the memory of a local person serving in a remarkable
way.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL
Crime Report: - There were 2 crimes reported to the Parish Council over the July
and August period, at its September meeting; – a burglary and a theft to a vehicle,
so please remain vigilant especially with the dark evenings drawing in. This nicely
brings me round to street lighting in the village. With darker evenings approaching
it is important to make sure all the streetlights are working properly in the village.
If you spot a fault, please report this to the Parish Clerk. It would be helpful if you
could provide the column number found on the base of the
streetlight, the name of road it is in, plus any property
name or number that it is near and of course the problem
with the streetlight.
The Parish Council has been made aware that some
properties are leaving their wheelie bins out on the
pavement on days other than the usual bin collection day.
Can we all be considerate to our neighbours and people in
the village who walk on the pavements and put our bins
back onto our properties once the refuse collection has
taken place.
KCC are introducing some changes to its household waste
recycling centres which include the size of an accepted
trailer body, a limit on soil, rubble and hardcore (max.
90Kg per visit) and the acceptance of tyres and asbestos at some sites, which carries
a small charge. For further details visit www.kent.giv.uk/hwrc.
There have been a number of fly-tipping incidents at the recycling area in the
recreation ground car park. Bags of domestic waste have been left by the 2 black
wheelie bins, used by the Parish Litter Warden for disposing of the rubbish
collected in the village. The bags then get ripped open by foxes making this whole
site a mess. Please respect the Village you live in and help to keep this area tidy.
Anyone caught fly- tipping here will be fined.
The Village Hall has recently received a make-over with a fresh lick of paint,
courtesy of the Kent Probation Service. The Village Hall Committee, subject to
funding, will be looking into laying a new floor covering in the main hall and toilet
area as this has seen better days! For all Village Hall bookings, please contact the
Parish Clerk. The rates of hire are from £8.00 per hour.
Finally, the Parish Council would like to give a warm welcome to the new Vicar,
Mike Hayes, to All Saints Church in Wouldham.
The next Council will be meeting on 2nd October 2012

Tax on Child Benefits from 2013
From 7/1/13 Child Benefit (CB) will be progressively withdrawn where either partner in a
household earns >£50k. Anyone earning >£60k effectively receives no CB at all. This
will be achieved by a special tax charge on the higher earner rather than stopping
payments of CB. Apart from having to plan for the drop in income, this is important to
know because if you are affected by this it will be your duty to tell the tax man - if you
don’t realise or forget you will get a penalty on top of the tax charge! Confused? Don’t
be. Like any other tax change we can help you work it out – come and have a chat.
Don’t Forget...The
Deadline
for filing a paper tax
return is
31st October
