My time at the Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences has been lled with deep perspectiveand personal growth. Our school is lucky to have the breathtaking mountains and serenelakes of the Kootenays as a back drop, which inspires a learning environment that mimics theessential foundation of Chinese medicine - that we are intertwined with nature. Te schoolboasts outstanding academic talent, with teachers capable of tempering and interpretingthe complexity of CM with their dynamic teaching styles, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to make each student feel like they are part of the ACOS family. I know thatwhen I begin practicing in clinic as a Doctor of Chinese Medicine, I will always cherish myeducation, and be thankful for how it has prepared me for success in a demanding industry.

is Te Season, Quack Quack!Te 115th North-America-wide Christmas Bird Count

begins on Sunday, December 14 and runs through Monday,January 5, 2015. Since the year 1900, the CBC annual countperiod has run from December 14 to January 5. Everyones invited to participate. Solet the counting begin!

Prior to the turn o the century, people engaged in aholiday tradition known as the Christmas Side Hunt:Tey would choose sides and go aeld with their guns;whoever brought in the biggest pile o eathered (and

urred) quarry won. Conservation was in its beginningstages around the turn o the 20th century, and many ob-servers and scientists were becoming concerned aboutdeclining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day1900, ornithologist Frank Chapman, an early offi cer inthe then budding Audubon Society, proposed a new holi-day tradition, a Christmas Bird Census, that would countbirds in the holidays rather than hunt them.

So began the Christmas Bird Count. Tanks to thenspiration o Frank Chapman and the enthusiasm o

    twenty-seven dedicated birders, twenty-ve Christmas

Bird Counts were held that day. Te locations rangedrom oronto, Ontario to Pacic Grove, Caliornia withmost counts in or near the population centers o north-eastern North America. Tose original 27 Christmas BirdCounters tallied around 90 species on all the counts com-bined. (rom Audubon Society, 2015).

Several counts are planned in 2015 around the Koote-nay area, including: Kaslo (December 30), Lardeau (De-cember 27), Harrop Balour (December 20), Slocan Lake

Decem er 27 , an Ne son January 3 . You can par-ticipate as a eld counter or as a eeder counter on thecount date. Te CBC bird census takes place on a singleday within a designated 24km diameter count circle, thusavoiding overlap and duplication o species numbers andidentities. CBCs are or both experienced and inexperi-enced bird watchers. Field activities are a mix o both soyou can sharpen your bird watching skills. For all ages, its a un, relaxed atmosphere, sharing olks interest andenthusiasm about our local winter birds.

For detailed information about each count area and toregister to participate in a local count you can contact:In Kaslo, Stu Heard, 250-353-7432, [email protected] Lardeau, Marlene Johnston, 250-366-4474, [email protected], or Peter Jonker, 250-276-4441, [email protected]. In Harrop Balfour, Charlie Zinkan, 250-229-4503, [email protected]. In Slocan Lake, Ri-chard Johnson, 250-358-2590, [email protected]. InNelson, Elaine Moore, 250-352-2168, [email protected].

Te longest running Citizen Science survey in the world,Christmas Bird Count provides critical data on popula-tion trends. ens o thousands o participants know that itis also a lot o un. Data rom the over 2,300 circles are en-tered afer the count and become available to query underthe Data & Research link. (quote rom Audubon Society,2015).
