Rising From A Strong CentreYasodhara Ashram continues to evolve from a core

strength of learning, teaching and commitment. Tismonth we are seeing many Yasodhara Yoga teachersreturn to refresh their understanding, while others diven for the rst time to our unique teacher certication

courses. Long-time practitioners continue to step for-ward and commit deeply to the spiritual lineage throughnitiations.

Inner strength that arises from a strong centre allows

the Ashram to create a light

exible structure for diverseprogramming – from teens to ecological groups, from“Taste of the Ashram” lunch and yoga drop-ins to athree-month intensive development program. We arealso extending externally through outreach workshopsn various cities and presentations at conferences, such as

the Parliament of World Religions. Te Ashram is builton a spirit of openness to all traditions, symbolized by theTemple of Light, which is silently moving toward mani-festation once again.

If that is you, and you are registered to vote in theupcoming federal election on October 19, you can vote– beginning right now – without delay – at the ElectionsCanada offi ce in Nelson.

Advance polls – normally used by voters planning tobe absent on election day – will be over theTanksgivingweekend, and have a chance of being missed, given travel, family obligations, etc. Another good reason to vote now.

If you are a new voter, you can also register to vote inthe same offi ce. You will have to show your identicationwith your current address and ll out a short form, andyou will then be given a special ballot to vote. Te easiestform of ID is the driver’s licence, but there are numerousother possibilities as well. See the following for more info.

*** Note *** One important diff erence with a Special

Ballot – since the regular ballots will not be printed forsome time – is that you will have to know the name of thecandidate you want to vote for and write that name on theballot. Not the party you want to win – the name of theactual candidate.

Kootenay-Columbia candidates in the October 19 elec-tion are:

    Bill Green – (Green Party)

    Don Johnston – (Liberal Party)

Wayne Stetski – (New Democratic Party)

David Wilks – (Conservative Party)Te Elections Canada offi ce is the White Building, 5th

oor, 310 Ward Street in Nelson. Tere is a person incharge of special ballots. Tis is the person to see.

Te offi ce hours are as follows:

In August, Monday to Friday, 10am until 5pm

Beginning September 8, Monday to Friday from 9amuntil 9pm, Saturdays from 9am to 6pm and Sundays fromnoon until 4pm .

Teir phone number (if you live in the Kootenay–

Columbia riding) is 250-505-8450.If you cannot get to the offi ce itself, you can also request

a special ballot using an application form providedhere: http://elections.ca/vot/reg/svr/international_e.pdf.Te special ballot will then be mailed to your homeaddress. It can be completed and mailed in.

    Women EncouragedTo Explore The Trades

Julie-Claire Hamilton fully understands the challengesfaced when delving into what has traditionally beenknown as a man’s world. Tough she has been plying hertrade for more than a decade, it hasn’t always been easy onthe job site front lines for the journeyperson electrician.

“As a woman in trades, I still encounter the old-schoolattitude where some men wonder what you are doing onthe job,” says Hamilton. “You have to prove yourself eventhat much more, but the mentality is changing and thatneeds to happen with everyone. We are just as capable inthe trades and in some cases women can excel at them.”

Now an electrical instructor at Selkirk College, Hamiltonhas been charged with leading a special cohort throughan exploration of trades this fall. In partnership with theGreater Trail Community Skills Centre, Selkirk College isoff ering a special Trades Discovery Program for Women.Te 14-week program with a two-week job shadow compo-nent provides women the opportunity to check out manydiff erent elements of the trades, get hands-on experience, and gain exposure to a variety of work sites and employers.

Te program runs October 26, 2015 to February 12,2016 at the college’s Silver King Campus in Nelson. A fewyears ago, Hamilton worked on a similar initiative calledSkilled Trades Exploratory Program (STEP) for womenwhere she taught the electrical portion of the program.Tis time she will be leading students through the entirescope with help from the Skills Centre and her peers atSelkirk College in carpentry, welding, metal fabricationand machinist/millwright.

“I’m excited about the possibilities in the trades andthe chance to share them with women,” says Hamilton.“Tere are so many avenues to pursue and once you getthat ticket, the opportunities are endless.”

Te program will be split between Trail and Nelson withthe rst three weeks in Trail and the shop portions in Nel-son. Students will explore the trades with hands-on activi-ties and exposure to actual work sites. Tey will learnwhat academic skills are required if they want to pursuetrades training as well as what employers are looking forn future workers. Te class will also provide employable

    skills in fall protection, con

    ned space and forklif

oper-ations – skills that are useful on many job sites. At theconclusion of the program, participants will have a betterunderstanding of their individual strengths and possiblepathways for further exploration.

Te tuition for the Trades Discovery Program forWomen is $800 and funding may be available for thosewho are eligible by contacting Jaime Malcolm at theGreater Trail Skills Centre at 250-368-6360. To nd outmore about the program call 250-354-3204.
