On 4·20-99, members of the Denver Police Department responded to a Citywide call for help fromthe Jefferson County Sheriffs Department. The call came out on the Denver Police Departmentdispatch system at approximately 1132 HRS, Officers responded to the scene within minutes frommost Police and Sheriffs Departments from the Metro area, Denver, Jefferson County SIO,Lakewood, and Arapahoe County Sheriffs Department set up their Command Posts at Leawood Ave& Pierce St. At approximately 1215 HRS, reporting Detective was assigned to act as aid and scribeto Captain Michael O'Neill, Captain O'Neill, known as Patrol one, was designated as theCommander of the Command Post.

On 04-20-99 at approximately 1200 hours, I responded to the ColumbineHigh School Shooting. In route, I stopped at a road block where OfficerRobert Mon~oya, #S2004 of Traffic Ope. approached me and asked if Ineeded ammo to take to the SCene. I said yes and he gave me a case ofshotgun rifle slugs and a case of 45 cal. ammo. He also gave me ashotgun. I went to the Command Post where I contacted Lt. Frank Veseaof Metre Swat and gave him the ammo.

I checked in with Sgt. Doug Jones who assigned me to make a Roster ofthe Detectives who responded to the scene and assisted in gettingwritten Statements from victim'S & witnesses.

On 04-20-1999 we were worklng in the Sex Crimes Unit. We were sentto assist with the shooting at Columbine High School at about 1345 hra.We responded to Pierce and Leawood, where we were directed to LeawoodElementary School. we walked to Leawood Elementary and were contactedby Capt. Saltzman. A school bus arrived with students who needed tobe interviewed and we directed the bus to the side entrance to the gym.We learned that the gym was full of parents and we directed thestudents to the music room So that they could be interviewed. AJefferson County Deputy told us that those who had witnessed theshooting or seen the shooters would be interviewed in the library. Wethen began to contact the students and the oneS who had witnessedanything were taken to the library. We found that some counsellorswere trying to sign out the students who did not see anything and weasked them to get full information on the students. When theinterviews were complete we were eventually relieved from theelementary school and we responded back to Leawood and Pierce where wecontacted Deputy Chief Abrams and Division Chief Gordon to see if wewere needed for anything else. After we were released from thatlocation we returned to headquarters.

On the abovedate reporting officer was in the District Four station when a call was received froma student at Columbine High School at approximately 1137 hours, Thestudent lateridentified as thesonof officer Wayne Depew reported thatshotswere being fired inside the school and that studentswerewounded by the gunfire. Officer John Lietz keptthis parry on the phoneandsimultaneouslycontacted Jeffco Sheriffdispatch. Hein rumcontinued to relay information relative to the shootingto the dispatcherand kept in touch with student Depew. At the sametimeI established a relaytoDPDofficers to keep themupdated on the situation as Officer Lietzrelayed the information to me.Subsequent to thatreporting officer setupChannel5A withtheassistance of TecanicianHays andDetective Loughlin. Thistookplace at approlcimately 1300 hours. Wecoordinated communicationsin this manneruntilapproximately 1400 hourswhen radio tookoverChattneI5A. FollowingthatTecllllician Hays andmyselfresponded to thesceneto assistthere.

Uponour arrival wewere sentto FairandPierce to assist a multi·jurisdictional team in the removalof students fromthe schoolvia school bus. Approximately 3 busloads of atudents were evacuatedto a nearby elementary school for debriefing by investigative personnel.

At theconclusion of the situation Officer Haysandmyselfescorted a U.S. Army armored personnelcarrierback to its transport vehicle and we wererelieved at approximately 1730 hours.

On 4-20-99, at approximately 1:00 PM, myself and Detective Kerry Rich responded to the scene nearColumbineHigh School. Upon our arrival we were requested to help establish telephonecommunications to the Denver Police Mobile Command Center. After accomplishing that task. I wasasked to monitor a portable "school' radio for possible transmissions by the suspects. No suspiciousradio conversations were overheard, After we were notified that suspectshad terminated themselveswe waited for further instructions. At approximately 6.00 PM, We disconnected the Command Centerfrom the telephone lines. We were dismisseda short time later.

SHOOTING AT COLUMBINE HIGH

Upon arrival at the school a Lakewood Officer that was direoting traffic near the command postat Bowels and Pierce 51. directed us to the West Side of the building. We drove west through thepark ending up on top of a large hill overlooking the West Side of the school. Present at this locationwere Lt. Ryan, Sergeants Selander, and Jones. While attempting to we sure the west side of thebuilding it was apparent that other Officer who were closer to the building were attempting to extractstudents from the building. After about two - three minutes a large amount of gunfire erupted and itappeared that the Offioer were under fire from hostile that were shooting from with in the building.The gunfire lasted about ninety seconds.

Ueu1enant Ryan and Sergeant Jones drove to the area of the shots and Ryan instructed us to remainat the observation point Within a short time of Ryan's departure, Captain Sandoval requestedaddit80nal assistance at the command post located at PierceIBowels. Sergeant Selander remainedat this location and Detective Daniel E. Rojas and I responded to Sandoval's request.

We were requested to report to Captain Lighthousesand LieutenantWheeler. upon arrival Wheelerwas in the process of assemblinga group of Officer and after the Officer were assembled werespondedto Weave and Kendell in order to check for additional suspects. This area was searchedand no suspects were found. While searching Detective Daniel E. Rojas located evidence of adetonation involving a two-liter plastic bottle. We recovered the bottle and took photos of thedamaqe. We then responded to a second location South ofthe school on Pierce, attempting to locateadditional suspects. We were unable to locate any suspects and we responded back to thecommand post.

In responding back to the command post Captain Sandovalordered us to respond to lakewoodElementary School to assist with crowd control because the high school students were beingtransported there. At the elementary school we reported the to Captains Leighthouser and Saltzmanand were assigned to crowed control in the stage area. [ Location of incident 15201 S. Pierce St.Columbine High School

On 04-20-1999, I was sent to the scene of this inoident by Lt.Williams, of the Denver Police Vice/Narcotios Bureau, at about 1430hrs. I responded from our office to that location. Upon arrival, I wasassigned by Sgt. Subia, to CoVer an Ambulance crew, should they needto respond into the school area to assist any wounded parties. Theambulance however was never sent into the school for victims.

Once the scene was secured at the school and it was determined thatthere were no other surviving victims that would require treatment byparamedic crew's I was released from my assignment with the ambulance.

I remained in the area where the ambulance' 8 were staged until Iresponded to the Leawood Elementary School to assist with witnessstatements. Upon arrival there no further assistance was needed and Iwas released from that scene by Sgt. Gold and Sgt. Martinez, of theDenver Police Vice/Narcotic's Bureau, at which time I left the sceneand responded back to my office at about 1830 hrs.

On the date of 4-20-99 at approximately 1125 hours, Deteotive Brennan82.-87 was at the looation 5125 W Florida Ave, Denver, Co conducting aphotc line up at the King Soopers store when the call for bell' wasaired by Jefferson County Sheriffs officers. It was related that theseofficers were under fire at Columbine High School.

The RD responded to the location of Pieroe St '" Lealand Ave, where theinitial command past was set, The RD assisted initially at thislocation keeping the area clear while a triage area was set.

The RD contacted Captain Collier at the scene and assisted as thedecision was made that Denve-r detectives would be assigned to anindividual ambulance as injured students or faculty waS evacuated fromthe school. That detectives would board each ambulance and respondwith the victim to the hospital.

Upon the communication with the forward Tactical Teams, the RD1 et allmoved South on Pierce St, to the East entrance of Columbine HighSchool. It was found that only one male student was evacuated to thelocation and was transported by ambulance. The RD assisted at thelocation with the evacuation of students from Columbine High School.

During the time at the location the RD spoke to Jefferson CountySheriffs Officer Gardner, who related af being the school resourceofficer assigned to Columbine High Schaal. Officer Gardner related thatat the start of the incident he was fired upon and returned fire on oneof the suspects.
