The meeting was held in the administra- tion building with over a hundred middle school and high school student athletes, coaches, and administrators in attendance. The host of the conference was Steven Mackey. Steven Mackey is the founder of 2 Words. It’s a character development pro- gram that equips coaches and student athletes to form a common bond while growing together as a team through short pep talk clips online. Steven wanted to give back the way his middle and high school coaches did for him when he needed them most. This is how the leadership summit came about to find and develop the next class of leaders. The goal statement is to encourage students that they are leaders and equip them to live it out. I asked Coach Cary, the athletic director of CISD, what his vision was for this summit. He said, “To create a family atmosphere for all sports/ activities while developing a common vision and pointing everyone in the same direc- tion.” Coach Cary asked for four students to be nominated from each grade and sport by their coaches. When the athletes walked in, they were teamed up with an admin- istrator or coach from the middle school or high school. Each group made up a team name and competed in vari- ous team building and ath- letic activities. Bonds were formed between athletes and coaches while learning lessons from what Steven shared. I asked Pirate athlete Mason Daugherty what he gained most from this leader- ship summit. He said, “Being a leader isn’t for everyone. You have to go the extra mile, encourage everyone, and not make it all about you.” At the conclusion of the summit each athlete is chal- lenged to go serve three hours of community service on their own time. It’s excit- ing to see students getting excited about being a leader! I can’t wait to see what the fu- ture holds for this first group of CISD leaders. NFHS Student CouncilNamed Sweepstakes Council

By CJ McClung

On Saturday February 22nd, the NFHS Student Council participated in a spring conference through the Texas Association of Student Councils. The spring conference is our major “competition” where we submit our project port-folios, detailing the work that our council has accom-plished over the past year. North Forney’s Student Councils received the fol-lowing awards at Satur-day’s conference:

• Outstanding Student Council Distinction

• Pride and Patriotism Distinction

• Drugs, Alcohol, Safety and Health Issues Dis-tinction

• Energy and Environ-ment Distinction

• Community Service Distinction

For achieving all possible distinctions, NFHS Student Council has been named a Sweepstakes Council, the highest honor awarded at the state level. This is the first time in school history

that we have received this award! #EXCELLENCE I am so proud of the nearly 100 students in this program that spend count-less hours on projects to build our True North cul-ture and help us write our narrative as a school. They are selfless, compassion-ate, eager, and hard work-ers. If you see a Student Council kid, please con-gratulate them and thank them for their service to our NFHS.
