FROM THE

Dear Cougar Fans,

I am proud to say CSUSM Athletics is coming off the most successful year in the program’s 15 year history. We finished the 2012-2013 campaign ranked 8th in the NAIA Director’s Cup (among over 300 NAIA institutions). Not only did our student-athletes reach new heights on the playing surface, they excelled in the classroom with 50% of our 300 student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or higher. While it is important to celebrate our past successes, I want to look ahead because the future for CSUSM Athletics is inspiring! Join our team and help Build the Legacy for CSUSM Athletics.

Thanks to continued philanthropic support, a number of deserving student-athletes receive the athletic scholarships they need in order to make their personal dreams and goals a reality. At CSUSM, our student-athletes receive a top-notch education in a small class size setting. In addition, they receive an opportunity to create a winning tradition.

We need your help! By joining the Cougar Athletic Club (CAC) you will support the future of CSUSM Athletics. Funds raised from the CAC will supplement annual team scholarship allocations and will help our department match the rising cost of tuition. By reading through the following pages, you will learn the impact your gift can have on our deserving student-athletes. Although there are a variety of levels, there is one constant- EVERY GIFT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

Thank you for your support and GO COUGARS!

SET THE STANDARDAlyssa Foster,Women’s Volleyball

In 2011, as a freshman setter, she played in the first-ever home contest for the women’s volleyball team.

“It was nerve-wracking. Our first home match was the first time we could show people CSUSM volleyball. Nobody knew how it would go, it could have been the beginning of the end. But, we won and we’ve had great support since then. It all started from day one,” said Foster.

Three years ago, Foster signed a commitment letter to a volleyball program that existed solely on paper. Since then, Foster has helped the Cougars to two conference championships and back-to-back appearances in the NAIA Tournament in the first two seasons of the program.

“We’ve created the path. When I first got to CSUSM, there wasn’t the traditional college volleyball experience. People want to come here now. They see our success and want to be a part of it. We’ve built a solid foundation that’ll help this program keep growing in the right direction.”

Foster knows the value of building a legacy that will endure for years to come.

“My goal for my four years is to always win conference. I want that to be the standard here – that we’re going to win and have a winning season. My class was the first freshman class and we’re going to be the first to stay all four years. We definitely want to have a lasting impact.”

“Your donations helped me out a lot. It is huge what people do to support our program. Without you, a lot of people couldn’t come here.”

Women’s GolfAfter winning five tournaments and finishing fourth at the NAIA National Championships, they ended the year with their highest-ever postseason ranking at No 4.

Men’s SoccerThe Cougars won five of their final six regular season games before losing a tight and spirited battle against top-seeded Ashford in the A.I.I. tournament semifinals. Four players were named all-conference.

Women’s SoccerCSUSM finished the year at No. 17 in the national poll after an 11-6-3 season. The Cougars knocked off three ranked opponents, earned the top seed for the A.I.I. tournament, and picked up its fourth NAIA national tournament appearance in the last five years.

REACHING BEYONDTHE COURSERyan Odom, Golf

For CSUSM sophomore golfer Ryan Odom, coming to CSUSM was a case of love at first sight.

“When I took a tour of the campus for the first time, I fell in love with it. It seemed like my type of town, and things just fell into place. I had high expectations coming in and my experience so far has exceeded those by a mile,” said Odom.

Receiving a partial scholarship factored greatly in Odom’s decision to attend a four-year university.

“Earning a scholarship has allowed me to help my family while they support me through college. As long as I do my job, both in the classroom and on the golf course, I can keep my scholarship and show them that I’m doing what I need to do.”

Golf has provided Odom with lessons that reach far beyond the course.

“Golf is going to push you left and right, and knock you over a couple of times. You’ve just got to get back up. It’s been a valuable life lesson – when you get knocked down, you can’t just sit there and do nothing about it, you’ve got to keep pushing and working until you’re at your best.”

“Thank you for all the help you’ve provided for us, the student-athletes. You’re the reason that all of this is possible. Without you, the CSUSM atmosphere just wouldn’t be the same. A huge shout-out to the donors.”

Academic Accomplishments49.8 percent of eligible student-athletes (130 of 261) at CSUSM earned recognition by the Athletics Department for having GPA’s of 3.0 or higher during the 2013 spring semester. Nine Cougars were honored with the Mangrum Award for having a perfect 4.0 GPA, 49 athletes qualified for the Big Blue Award (3.50-3.99 GPA), while 72 were Cougar Award (3.00-3.49 GPA) winners.

Scholarship Amounts vs. Tuition CostsCal State San Marcos continues to make great strides as it relates to increasing the average athletic scholarship given each academic year. Cougar Athletic Club gifts will allow Cal State San Marcos to close the gap between athletic scholarships and tuition cost. Every gift counts!

BE A PART OF A TEAMScott Rice, Men’s Soccer

“They really took a chance on me.”

For Cal State San Marcos junior midfielder Scott Rice, playing collegiate soccer hadn’t always been a part of the plan. Without financial help, attending a four-year university was nearly out of the question. However, CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers and associate head coach Bobby Renneisen took a liking to Rice’s play on the field and personality off it.

“Receiving financial aid was everything, honestly. I don’t know if I would have been able to go to a four-year if it wasn’t for the scholarship. It would have been hard on my family and me.”

Since his arrival in San Marcos as a freshman, Rice has entrenched in university life, excelling in the classroom and developing meaningful relationships with people on campus.

“I am always around my teammates and coaches and love coming into the athletic department to talk about soccer and life with everyone. With this being a campus on the smaller side, I’ve gotten to know the people and the faces over the last two years. It’s great that I’ve been able to develop so many great relationships with students, professors and coaches all over campus.”

He credits his experience at CSUSM with helping him mature on and off the field.

“Playing soccer here has helped me learn to multitask by focusing on school, as well as soccer. I’ve learned what it is like to be a part of a team and be a part of something bigger than myself. I’ll be able to advance into a career where I can work well with others and I’ll be able to balance everything that I’ll need to do.”

“Thank you for helping me grow. You have provided the opportunity to get an education. Now with less financial stress, I can focus on beginning my career after college.”

PREPARED TO LEADAmber Rosario,Women’s Track & Field

Amber was a standout prep athlete in North San Diego County before deciding on CSUSM for her college education. Since then, she’s become a five-time All-American in women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

“It means a lot to me growing up nearby and now competing at Cal State San Marcos. My former coaches, friends and people in the community are able to keep an eye on me when I run. Just having people I know cheering me on, being a great support system, has been very beneficial to me,” said Rosario.

As a recognizable face in town and one of CSUSM’s most decorated athletes, Rosario realizes her responsibility of leading by example.

“I know a lot of people are looking up to me. I was raised in a military household and learned discipline that has helped me in my training and every day life. I’ve been taught to do what I need to do to succeed, and whatever it is, do it to my best ability. If I get the job done, it will work out from there.”

She credits her experience as a student-athlete with helping her succeed on the field and in the classroom.

“Being an athlete my whole life, I’ve learned to balance school, training, work and fun. I’ve learned to multitask even better since I’ve been competing here, and it has been a great experience that will help me throughout my life.”

“First of all, thank you! Anyone who is sacrificing to help our sports, your support is greatly appreciated. Your donations have benefited not only me, but my team as well.”
