Dear Cougar Fans,

The past few years have been the most successful period in the history of CSUSM Athletics, with outstanding team and individual successes achieved on the playing field and in the classroom. The recent past is impressive but the future for CSUSM Athletics is inspiring!

Thanks to philanthropic support, a number of deserving student-athletes receive the athletic scholarships they need in order to make their personal dreams a reality. They receive a top notch education. In addition, they receive an opportunity to create a winning tradition.

You can help! Join the Cougar Athletic Club (CAC) and support the future of CSUSM Athletics. Funds raised by the CAC will supplement annual team scholarship allocations and help our department match the rising cost of tuition. As a former student-athlete, I know how much donations mean and am forever grateful to the donors who helped me earn my degree and play intercollegiate softball. Every Cougar student-athlete positively affected by your generosity will feel the same way.

Although there are a variety of levels, there is one constant – every gift makes a difference. Please read the following pages to learn how you can impact student-athletes and Build The Legacy at California State University San Marcos.

Thank you for your support and GO COUGARS!

DRIVEN TO SUCCEEDAyded Reyes, Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field

Before her 2nd birthday, Ayded Reyes’ family immigrated to San Diego from Mexico to seek a better life. Growing up, Reyes made due with very little, but sports made her feel a sense of belonging.

“I was a very shy person growing up here. But through sports I learned how to be a part of a team and how to be a leader,” says Reyes.

Upon her high school graduation, it was apparent Reyes would need financial help if college was to be in her future.

“It has been my sole motivation to get to college and receive an education since I’ve been little. But, it was going to be tough for me to pay for it. Running and earning a scholarship was really my only opportunity to continue to go to school.”

Reyes beat the odds and became the first person in her family to attend college.

“My scholarship is vital. I feel very blessed because I’ve been given something that’s very hard to get. You have to work every day; you can’t go a week without running because you’re risking losing it. My scholarship is very important to me because I don’t have any other way to receive a college education.”

Still, Reyes knows she has much to prove and recognizes those who have helped her along the way.

“What my parents went through helps motivate me to do my best in running and in school. I want to give everything I can to them in return. I wouldn’t be what I am today if my parents had never brought me here.”

And if she could talk to a Cougar Athletic Club donor who made her dream possible:“You’re doing something that is going to benefit somebody like me. I’m going to show you that I’m going to do my best because you’re making my future goals come true. I couldn’t be here without you. Thank you very much!”

A PLACE TO CALL HOMEKyle Secciani, Baseball

For Kyle Secciani, who chose to transfer to Cal State San Marcos after a redshirt season, finding the right fit to play collegiate baseball was a priority. He knew head coach Dennis Pugh’s reputation in the San Diego area, and the third-year program caught his eye.

“I was really intrigued by CSUSM. It was a new, up-and-coming program. We didn’t have a field and there was a lot of work to be done. I was excited to be a part of that,” says Secciani.

In 2011, the Cougars played their first-ever true home game at the brand-new CSUSM Baseball Field on campus. Secciani became a part of CSUSM history, notching the first hit in the stadium – a triple – and scoring the Cougars’ first run.

“That was a great feeling. I was happy to get the first hit and score the first run. It was really exciting, good for the program, and it was sweet to go on and win that game in our last at-bat. It was an incredible environment to play in.”

He credits his experience at CSUSM with helping him mature on and off the field.

“I’ve learned a lot about how to deal with failure and adversity. Sometimes things don’t work out. My experience playing baseball and going to school here has helped a lot when it comes to making stuff work and making the best out of things. I’ve had an amazing four years here and have been really happy.”

Kyle’s message to the Cougar Athletic Club donors:

“You are providing life-changing experiences for student-athletes by giving us an opportunity to succeed. It doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated. Your donations truly give a chance to change someone’s life for the better.”

Academic Accomplishments147 student-athletes, or 48%, earned recognition by the Athletics Department for having GPA’s of 3.0 or higher. 10 Cougars were honored with the Mangrum Award for having a perfect 4.0 GPA. 59 CSUSM athletes qualified for the Big Blue Award (3.50-3.99 GPA) while 78 were Cougar Award (3.00-3.49) winners.

Scholarship Amounts vs. Tuition CostsCal State San Marcos continues to make great strides as it relates to increasing the average athletic scholarship given each academic year. Cougar Athletic Club gifts will allow Cal State San Marcos to close the gap between athletic scholarships and tuition cost. Every gift counts!

STARTING FROM SCRATCHJacob Ranger, Men’s Basketball

“It was exciting to be a part of the first basketball team in school history. Down the road, I’ll be able to say I was a part of that first-ever team at San Marcos,” says Jacob Ranger.

Now, of course, the table has been set for the future of the CSUSM program.

“We’re getting to make our own history here at CSUSM. I think we did exceptionally well in our first year by beating some of the best teams in the NAIA. Now, we’ve got to make sure to keep that standard.”

Ranger knows that his hard work on the court wasn’t the only reason he had the opportunity to play at CSUSM.

“Growing up and working hard - not only on the court, but in the classroom - gave me the chance to enjoy the college experience. I’m just truly blessed that I have been given the chance to play basketball, do something I love to do, and go to school.”

He credits his coaches with helping him go further than he ever imagined he could.

“They form solid game plans that help us win. At the same time, they’re putting us in a position to succeed when we graduate.”

And if Jacob could talk to a Cougar Athletic Club donor:“I would say a lot of these kids who you’re helping out wouldn’t have the opportunity to go to school if it weren’t for you. You make their lives better by donating. It’s a tremendous help in making the college experience possible.”

NEVER GIVE UPNicole Luna, Women’s Soccer

“Never give up. Believe in yourself,” says Nicole Luna.

Luna has been through a lot during her time on the CSUSM soccer team. She’s weathered various medical setbacks. Been forced to catch up in school. Heard the dissenters doubt her because her 5’2’’ frame, an atypical size for a central defender.

“I started struggling with sports-induced asthma. By the time I went to college, it had gotten so bad I couldn’t get it under control. I wasn’t able to finish the fitness and I was even forced to miss my first week of classes.”

She battled back, recovering to become a starter on the Cougar back line for the 2011 Association of Independent Institutions championship game, in addition to being named a Cougar Scholar Athlete for the fourth-straight semester.

“What I’ve learned is never give up, even if you want to. It doesn’t matter your size. It’s pretty much all about your heart. If you want it, you can do it. It’s all about working hard.”

For Luna, fighting through hardship is much more than an individual enterprise.

“Getting through adversity just isn’t for me. I’m doing it for my team, my coaches and my school. I don’t want to let anyone down, especially myself. I want to be the best I can be. Hopefully, that will inspire others to be the best they can be.”

And if Nicole could talk to the donors who have helped her get where she is:“I would want to say thank you so much for believing in me. I want to promise them I will work hard in school and on the field. I want to give back to others like they’ve done for me. It has really helped me to fulfill my dreams of what I want to do.”

6

Men’s SoccerThe Cougars won their first-ever Association of Independent Institutions title, as coach Ron Pulvers was named A.I.I. Coach of the Year and Jake Kaiser was tabbed A.I.I. Player of the Year and NAIA All-America.

Women’s SoccerCaptured its third A.I.I. title in the past four seasons as seven Cougars were named all-conference and Kaycee Gunion was named First Team All-America.

VolleyballA.I.I. Coach of the Year Andrea Leonard guided the Cougars to the A.I.I. conference crown and a 29-8 overall record in the program’s first year of existence.
