“The Twelve Days of Christmas” (original meaning of the song)
People often think of 'The Twelve Days of Christmas’ as sung in the old English Christmas Carol, as the days preceding the festival. Actually, Christmas is a season of the Christian Year that lasts for the twelve days beginning December 25 and lasting until January 6, - the Feast day of Epiphany, when the church celebrates the public revelation of Christ as the ‘Light of the World’ and recalls the journey of the Magi.
From 1558 until 1829 Roman Catholics in England were not allowed to practice their faith openly. During that era someone wrote “The Twelve Days of Christmas” as a kind of ‘Secret Catechism’ that could be sung in public without the risk of persecution. The song has two levels of interpretation: the surface meaning which seems a bit silly as well as much fun to sing —plus the hidden meaning known only to members of the Church. Each element in the carol is a code word for a religious reality!
The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ. The two turtledoves are the Old and New Testaments. Three French hens stand for faith, hope and love. The four calling birds are the four Gospels. The five gold rings recall the Torah (Law) the first five books of the Old Testament. The six geese a-laying stand for the first six days of creation. Seven swans a-swimming represent the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit. The eight maids a-milking are the eight beatitudes. Nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5). The ten lords a-leaping are the Ten Commandments. Eleven pipers piping stand for the eleven faithful Apostles. Twelve drummers drumming symbolize the 12 points of belief in the "Apostles' Creed."
If you think Jesus being symbolized as a partridge in a pear tree sounds blasphemous,... remember:
"Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How often would I have sheltered you under My wings, as a hen does her chicks, but you would not have it so." (Luke 13:34 & Matthew 23:34)
The "true love" in the song refers to God Himself. The "me" receiving the gifts is every Christian. So that "silly" song we sing at Christmas time has more meaning than we thought!
May God grace you with Joy and Love during this wonderful season of Christmas. May hidden mysteries of Faith touch your families in new and marvelous ways and may Christ, who is the “Light of the World,” illumine your hearts with “Merry Old Christmas Cheer”!
Merry Christmas!

Feliz Navidad!

UâÄÄxà|Ç U|àá As we draw closer to the Feast of the Nativity, we hear the great stewardship proclamation twice in today’s second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews: “Behold, I come to do your will, O God!” Who is this Jesus? Who are we that we should follow him? Many want Him as a friend, a guide, a king, an ad-vocate. We long to see the face of God. Jesus reveals the nature of God, the servant sent to give us new life in Him. Take time to pon-der: Do we have the courage to fol-low Jesus? To show others the face of God? To say to the Lord: “Behold, I come to do your will?”

In the Gospel reading today we see St. John the Baptist leap in St. Elizabeth’s womb at the recognition of Jesus in Mary’s womb. Do we see Jesus in others? Do we live our lives so that others will see Jesus in us? Let God strengthen, renew and re-kindle your marriage sacrament so that it may reflect the love of Je-sus. "God is the Savior; we are those who are in peril. He is the physician; we are the infirm. To realize this is the first step towards salvation, towards emerging from the maze in which we have been locked by our pride. To lift our eyes to heaven, to stretch out our hands and call for help is our means of escape, provided that there is Someone who hears us and can come to our assistance. Jesus Christ is the proof that God has heard our cry. And not only this! God’s love for us is so strong that He cannot remain aloof; He comes out of Himself to enter into our midst and to share fully in our human condition (cf. Ex 3:7-12). ... Only the God who is love, and the love which is God, could choose to save us in this way, which is certainly the lengthiest way, yet the way which respects the truth about Him and about us: the way of reconciliation, dialogue and cooperation."

SJB won 1st place in team competition and 1st place in overall competition. [tä|Çz fâÜzxÜçR Whether you will be hospitalized for a few days or whether your surgery is same-day surgery, give one of our priests a call PRIOR to your surgery, so that anointing can be given at a time when you are less stressed. Ask one of the priests following Mass, or call the parish office at 630-668-0918, ext. 600, and set a time to come in BEFORE your surgery for anointing.
VxÇàÜtÄ WâÑtzx [ÉáÑ|àtÄ Our priests are always available to make hospital visits. However, you or a family member must notify the St. John’s parish office of the confinement in the hospital. Also, remind the hospital that the name of the patient must be shown on the visitation sheet which is given to the priest when he makes his calls. We want to make sure our parishioners needs and requests are met, so please remember this when entering the hospital.
[ÉÅxuÉâÇw If you, or a parishioner you know, is homebound and wishes to receive communion, please call the parish office at 630-668-0918, Ext. 600, and we will pass your name to the coordinator for Homebound Ministry.
