The activist, currently a Clinical Teaching Fellow at Cardozo School of Law’s Immigration Justice Clinic, was honored recently at the Macy’s Herald Square, the fl agship department store on 34th Street.

As shoppers milled about on the ninth fl oor seeking out furniture options, they were greeted with a colorfully appointed stage in recognition of the store’s LGBTQ “Pride and Joy” celebration.

City Comptroller Scott Stringer, together with Macy’s and TheMenEvent.com, hosted the annual Pride Celebration and Changemakers Award Ceremony on June 20th. The event, which draws hundreds for its raffl es, fashion shows, and awards presentations, is in its fi fth year.

This year’s ceremony honored Mancheno; the cast of the television show Strut; the Hetrick Martin Institute (HMI), and former WNBA player Sue Wicks.

Growing up, Luis Mancheno knew that he was diff erent.

At 14 years old, he knew he was gay.Mancheno feared rejection from friends and

family in his native Ecuador, and in 2007, an evening out resulted in a near-death accident in which he was drugged and endured slurs.

Soon after, he decided to move to the United States with a student visa to attend college. He’d go on to receive asylum and earn his law degree, cum laude, from Roger Williams University School of Law.

Since then, Mancheno has worked as a Refugee Status Determination Expert for the United Nations; has represented men and transgender women detainees seeking asylum, and has served as an Immigration Attorney with the Bronx Defenders.

And in 2016, he became a U.S. citizen – a critical decision for the former refugee.

Mancheno, now thirty years old, says he will remain committed to social justice work.

The teen and his mother had been receiving legal assistance from Neighbors Link, a Mount Kisco-based immigrant support group, and the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC).

Outside 26 Federal Plaza, friends of Puma-Macancela and immigrant advocates denounced federal offi cials for apprehending the teen.

“He had no criminal record; he didn’t do anything wrong,” said Luis Yumbla, head of the Hudson Valley Community Coalition, a social justice advocacy group.

Yumbla said that the mother and son sought to escape violence in Ecuador, and remarked that it was unfair for the United States government to send them back to that danger.

“We need to protect and respect our immigrants,” Yumbla said.

Nonetheless, ICE pursued the removals of both residents.

They arrived in the city of Guayaquil late afternoon on Fri., June 23rd.

“ICE removed Diego Ismael Puma Macancela and his mother, Rosa Ines Macancela Vazques, to Ecuador on Friday,

both mother and son were arrested. The two applied for asylum and had been permitted to remain pending a decision.

Then, on Nov. 16th, an immigration judge signed a deportation order, which prompted the recent arrests and new removal proceedings.

It is a position refl ective of the harder line on immigration drawn by the Trump administration.

Despite the eff orts of supporters of a high school student arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offi cers earlier this month who rallied in a last-ditch attempt to help him avoid deportation, 19-year-old Diego Puma-Macancela has been returned to his native Ecuador.

Puma-Macancela, who had no criminal record, and his mother Rosa Ines Macancela, had fl ed Ecuador in 2014 to escape violent gangs.

But just hours before his senior prom at Ossining High School, Puma-Macancela was taken by ICE. His mother, Rosa Ines Macancela Vazques, had been arrested by ICE on June 7.

On June 21, supporters gathered outside of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services headquarters at 26 Federal Plaza to bring attention to his case and call for him to be allowed stay in the United States.

Lawyers had fi led appeals to allow them to stay in the country, supporters said, at least long enough for Puma-Macancela to earn a high school diploma.

The teenager, while also attending classes, had been working two jobs at diff erent restaurants.

Report: New York Lagging in Children’s Well-Being

There’s been an improvement in the well-being of the nation’s

children, but a new report fi nds New York State has a long way to go.

The 2017 KIDS COUNT Data Book from the Annie E. Casey Foundation (AECF) says more children have health insurance, and a record 83 percent of students nationally fi nished high school on time.

But according to Laura Speer, Associate Director of Policy Reform at AECF, since the Great Recession, the number of children living in areas of concentrated poverty has increased.

“It’s now about 14 percent of all children,

which is too many kids and something that we need to pay attention to,” she says.

While New York is near the top in the number of children with health insurance, high concentrations of poverty put the state at 30th in the overall ranking of states.

New York ranks 41st for economic well-being and 34th in family and community.

Larry Marx, CEO of The Children’s Agenda, based in Rochester, points out that state programs to help families escape poverty aren’t reaching many of those who need them.

“Subsidies to low-income families who are in the workplace, trying to escape poverty, do the right thing, aff ect only 17 percent of the eligible population,” Marx says.

He says 52 percent of children in Rochester live in poverty, among the highest poverty rates in the country for a city of its size.

While there has been progress nationally since the height of the recession, programs that have helped lift children up now are under threat. Speer emphasizes the importance of holding the line on gains that have been made.

“This is not a time for us to back away from the investments that we’ve made in things like the Children’s Health Insurance Program and the Earned Income Tax Credit,” Speer adds. “We’ve seen progress because of these investments, and we want to keep the progress going.”

The 2017 KIDS COUNT Data Book is based on fi gures available through 2015.

T he Progressive Caucus of the New York City

Council is urging the de Blasio administration to take action against the remaining offi cers involved in the 2012 shooting of Bronx teenager Ramarley Graham.

“We request immediate action from your administration to hold the remaining offi cers responsible for Ramarley Graham’s killing and its related misconduct accountable in a transparent manner,” the Caucus said last week in a letter sent to Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill.

“NYPD trial dates should be scheduled for the two other offi cers charged (Sergeant Scott Morris and Offi cer John McLoughlin), who were charged by the department in the same year (2012) that Graham was killed,” the letter said. “We urge you to publicly release the departmental charges that these offi cers face, along with start dates for their trials, without any further wavering.”

In its letter, the Caucus also expressed disappointment in the handling of the disciplinary process related to Graham’s killing, including the department’s allowing Richard Haste to resign rather than be terminated.

“It is disgraceful that after more than fi ve years since killing Ramarley and subsequently

accruing pay raises and overtime, Richard Haste was not immediately suspended when Deputy Commissioner Maldonado’s draft report was provided to the department,” the letter read. “The NYPD’s failure to take swift action against Haste allowed him to resign. It was a failure of accountability and must not be repeated for the several other offi cers involved in Graham’s killing.”

The letter also urged the NYPD to comply with the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request by Graham’s family, which sued the NYPD for failure to release documents.

On June 22, the family of Graham and their community supporters released documents previously withheld by the NYPD under the state law 50-a.

The documents released include the

fi nal report and recommendation from the trial of Richard Haste by NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Trials and the fi nal report of the Firearm Discharge Review Board (FDRB) into Haste’s fi ring of his weapon.

The report from the departmental trial makes several criticisms of Sergeant Morris for giving “no direction to the offi cers.”

A Republican candidate for New York City mayor has a plan

to cover two of the city’s busiest highways with public parks.

Paul Massey, a real estate mogul looking to unseat Mayor Bill de Blasio in the 2017 election, unveiled an infrastructure proposal on June 26 that would construct networks of “green corridors” over sections of the Cross Bronx Expressway and Brooklyn Queens Expressway.

Massey, who revealed his plan in Crotona Park at Fulton Avenue, said his “Green Growth” project would increase the amount of parkland and open space in New York City, while reconnecting neighborhoods cut apart by highways.

“Too many growing communities are starved for green space. And too many residential neighborhoods struggle with nearby expressways that reduce air quality and cause noise pollution that can be dangerous for children,” said Massey in a press release. “Just as the Brooklyn Heights Promenade was built to cover depressed parts of the BQE, it’s time to take the same approach elsewhere throughout the city to give more of our citizens access to green space. There is a lot of work to be done to make our city livable again, and this green growth plan is an important start.”

Massey said the plan could be paid for out of the more than $2 billion the city has budgeted for parks capital spending over the next ten years.

In the Bronx, Massey’s “Green Growth” plan calls for a linear greenway park featuring amenities and public spaces to cover exposed, below-grade portions of the Cross Bronx Expressway between University and Jerome Avenues.

The Cross Bronx Expressway, conceived of by urban planner Robert Moses, was rated the country’s most congested urban roadway in February by traffi c analysis company Inrix.

Other greenways would be built over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Woodside/Astoria, Carroll Gardens and South Williamsburg.

Sections of the greenways would feature areas designated for community gardens, food vendors, pet parks and educational programs. The greenways would also include space for playgrounds, sports fi elds, skate parks, outdoor theaters and public art installations.

Some offi cials were not enamored with Massey’s proposal.

Councilmember Mark Levine, Chair of the Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee, called the plan “a joke” in a newspaper report.

“You have no credibility if you’re talking about this kind of mega-investment and also constantly talking about how we’re overtaxed,” Levine said.

But others expressed enthusiasm.On Twitter, Doug Rose wrote, “GREAT

idea, Paul. I actually thought of that—big fantasy—when we lived in Riverdale. Imagine the soaring property values w/ more green.”

The Republican candidate spent additional time in the borough on June 26th

with members of the Bronx Republican Party, including J.C. Polanco, Esq., Republican candidate for Public Advocate.

According to the CDC, Alzheimer’s disease—a type of

dementia—aff ects an estimated 5.4 million Americans.

In 2014, 15 percent of the U.S. population (or 46 million adults) were 65 or older, and the number is expected to climb to about 22 percent of the population (88 million U.S. adults), by 2050.

Anyone who has a relationship with someone suff ering from Dementia or Alzheimer’s knows that even the simplest rituals in daily life can become true challenges—for both caregivers and the family members themselves—as the disease progresses. Something as innocent as making and enjoying a morning cup of coff ee or tea can turn into an exhausting and frustrating experience.

I work closely with elderly New Yorkers who suff er from dementia to ensure that they are able to live safely and independently in their own homes. In many instances, this also means educating family caregivers about how to cope when situations become stressful.

My colleagues and I know there are countless potential obstacles that can make even daily rituals extremely diffi cult. We hope the following guidelines will help family caregivers fi nd patience and a sense of calm while caring for a loved one with dementia.

• Accentuate the familiar: You may need to remind your family member with dementia who you are, or of another person, place or daily ritual. Say “I’m…, I visit you here at home every day” or “Hi Grandpa, it’s me… I’m off from school and am going to be spending this morning with you.” This helps them feel grounded in what they know and allows them to feel safe with that knowledge for however long they can. Patience is a virtue here, it’s important to manage

your own expectations and try not to take your loved one’s memory loss personally.

• Observation is key: As noted above, familiarity can help lessen frustration sometimes, when your loved one can grasp onto something familiar or expected. Notice favorite foods, drinks, how they take their coff ee—reminding someone with dementia of the things

they enjoy can be calming and helpful. Take note as well about times of day

that they might seem to be more clear or confused, and adjust your

caretaking accordingly. For example, many patients may be disoriented in the morning, others may also experience sundowing and

become very confused in the evening and nighttime, and even try to leave the home.

As these conditions progress, your loved

one may even forget how to walk, move, or swallow. In extreme cases, the person you’re caring for may need reminders about putting one foot in front of the other when ambulating. Preventing aspiration is imperative as well when dementia is advanced, it is important to carefully observe your loved one as they are eating and drinking. You may want to consider bringing in home care assistance to help with these more challenging times.

• Try new conversation tactics: Since conversations can be repetitive and tend to loop around to the same topic or questions, try to listen carefully and then reword the question or emphasize a diff erent point to help keep communication fl owing. Re-clarifying and altering the question slightly can go a long way. Also, though it is tempting when conversing with someone with dementia to fi ll every silence, sometimes you do have to give the person some time to think before they respond.

• Involve the patient: Instead of calling all of the shots with simple tasks like getting dressed and ready for the day, involving your loved one or client can help foster independence and self-respect. You can make suggestions—“It’s hot outside today, so let’s wear something with short sleeves”—but let them choose which short-sleeve shirt. Try this when going grocery shopping too: ask which fl avor or which brand of a product they think you should buy.

Encouraging input in small decisions may allow your loved one to feel some of the independence that often seems sadly missing.And try to keep your loved one active by

It’s a club with benefi ts.

That’s how Gregg Bishop described the impact of certifi cation for Minority- and W o m e n - O w n e d Business Enterprises (M/WBEs) at a recent gathering of over 1,500 such businesses.

The 11th annual citywide procurement fair, held on June 21 at Bank of New York/Mellon headquarters in Manhattan, connects

While SBS off ers resources to assist all M/WBEs, Bishop stressed that certifi cation dramatically increases the ability to obtain city contracts. He likened certifi cation to “having SBS as an addition to your staff .”

“You’re eligible to get additional technical assistance,” explained Bishop. “We have fi nancing programs, capital access for your

business, so as you’re bidding for a contract, you can borrow at a 3 percent interest rate up to half a million dollars. What certifi cation gets you is access.”

Another featured speaker was Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) Commissioner Lisette Camilo, who declared the fairs a “favorite” event.

DCAS manages 55 public buildings and buys goods and services ranging from interior renovations and HVAC repair, to green cleaning supplies, uniforms, pest control services and more.

“It’s sort of like a one-stop shop,” explained Bishop, who serves as Commissioner of Small Business Services (SBS). “But it’s only open to certifi ed companies. When you talk about how

membership has its privilege, I would say certifi cation has benefi ts.”

Through a host of workshops and a networking exhibit hall, the procurement fair allows small businesses to learn about upcoming contracts they can apply for.

During opening remarks at the event, First Lady Chirlane McCray announced that the city is ahead of its target of awarding $16 billion to M/WBEs by 2025, having awarded $5 billion to M/WBEs since the goal was announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2015.

“Our administration understands that minority and women-owned businesses in New York City are valuable – but too often underutilized – assets,” said McCray. “That’s why we’re making such a concerted eff ort to bring these businesses into the economic

In seeking to promote Men’s Health Awareness Month, the organizations joined to provide free health screenings including check-ups for blood pressure and glucose levels. Fitness assessments and relaxation massages were also off ered.

Lifestyle and wellness expert Evette Ríos provided a “Lunchology” segment in which she conducted demo on the basics of healthy school lunches, and the North Bronx Career Counseling and Outreach Center set up a kiosk with information on its programs.

Bailey honored mental health advocate Brett Scudder for his dedication to bringing awareness and resources to mental health. Scudder, a suicide attempt survivor, founded the non-profi t organization Scudder Intervention Services Foundation Inc. (SISFI), which provides mental health support services such as education, awareness, training, support, development and research to underserved populations.

Also highlighted was the campaign to ensure that health coverage is provided to

every child in New York State; there are an estimated 100,000 children still not insured in New York.

Jorge Paccha, a friend and co-worker of Puma-Macancela, said he received a call from a panicked Diego after federal agents showed up at his cousin’s house to arrest him.

“He sounded scared,” Paccha said. “He wasn’t sure what to do. Ultimately, he gave himself up because he didn’t want to cause trouble for his family.”

Paccha lamented that his friend would be removed just as he was so close to fi nishing high school.

“He’s a person with big dreams,” remarked Paccha. “His dreams shouldn’t have to die because of this.”

“We are deeply disappointed with the decision by ICE to move forward with the deportation to Ecuador of our client, Diego Puma Macancela,” said Neighbors Link representative Mary Vinton in a statement. “Diego is heartbroken. This teen is leaving his home, his family, and friends behind to return to a country where retaliatory gang violence — possibly even death — await him.”

“We feel it’s a message of fear that’s being sent right now,” added Rev. Jean Walsh, of the Westchester United Church of Christ.

Madrid said that recent ICE arrests are “feeding into the narrative that immigrants are a problem for this country.”

Still, the looming threat of deportations for families such as Puma-Macancela and his mother had also stirred the beginning of dialogue and new mobilization eff orts.

Madrid pointed out that while New York City gets attention for being a “sanctuary city,” suburban neighborhoods are also mobilizing in the face of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

“We’re creating hate-free zones in our own towns,” she said.

“There’s defi nitely been a huge response in Ossining,” agreed Walsh. “There are pictures of Diego everywhere downtown, and signs saying ‘Bring Diego home.’ I hope that he and his mother can stay here.”

Yumbla said his coalition has formed “community defense teams” to give support

to immigrants facing deportation. The group has staged numerous rallies and circulated an online petition to promote the deportation plight of Puma-Macancela.

“It can be eff ective in bringing communities together, and in showing elected offi cials that they need to take action to protect immigrants,” remarked Yumbla.

Vinton stressed that the public show of support is valuable.

“There are countless, similar struggles going on in this country right now,” she said. “Every day immigrants are working hard, contributing to our economy, and trying to keep their families together. Every call you made, every comment you posted in social media, every time you spoke up to educate a neighbor or off er encouragement to Diego, matters. You shined a spotlight on injustice, raised awareness in your community, and made it a little bit harder for this to happen to someone else.”

“It’s really a message that nobody is safe,” she remarked. “We want to send our own message to immigrants, that we’ve got their back.”

• Be mindful of your reactions: Even if your loved one is suff ering from a very severe form of dementia, he or she will still react to you based on your tone of voice and/or facial expression. Be mindful of not letting your frustration show. It is diffi cult, but take a deep breath, put a smile on, and keep your tone positive. It can make a world of diff erence.

• Know when to take a break: Sometimes there is nothing left to do but simply step away for a short while. This is one of the most important things you can do to take care of yourself as a caregiver. If things have become aggressive or simply too overwhelming, walk away for a few minutes (as long as it is safe). Give yourself some time to collect yourself and try to return with a diff erent facial expression.

• Remember safety: To keep your loved one safe, make sure to check window locks, stove knobs, and unplug appliances such as the microwave to prevent accidents, burns or food safety issues. Door alarms can be very helpful when someone has a tendency to wander off , and you may want to consider getting a Safe Return Bracelet from the Alzheimer’s Association. Registering a loved one with advanced Alzheimer’s or dementia is very important.

The FDRB report indicates that Sergeant Morris “exercised poor tactical judgment,” “failed to supervise his subordinates,” and “violated SNEU procedural and training guidelines” and that Offi cer McLoughlin “exercised poor tactical judgment.”

“These documents only add to the evidence that both Sergeant Scott Morris and Offi cer John McLoughlin must be fi red for the killing of my son Ramarley. They are a danger to public safety and should not continue to collect paychecks from the NYPD,” said Graham’s mother, Constance Malcolm.

Malcolm asserted that NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kevin Richardson told

her during Haste’s trial that Morris and McLoughlin would face trials after Haste, but noted that no trials have yet been scheduled.

“I’m worried that Mayor de Blasio and the NYPD are not taking accountability for killing Ramarley seriously, and that Morris and McLoughlin will get slaps on the wrists instead of being fi red, as they deserve,” Malcolm said. “It’s a slap in the face to my family and community and another indication of their lack of commitment to black lives taken by police in New York City.”

“This moment in time, with knowing all for which we have learned in regards to the truth as to Ramarley’s death, the Mayor and the NYPD have an opportunity to restore trust in the people they serve by terminating Morris and McLoughlin,” said Royce Russell, an attorney for the family. “This is the moment to re-establish the old standards of accountability.”

Other speakers referenced how political concerns within the LGBTQ community felt heightened in the new administration.

“In these dark times, it is uplifting to see leaders at all levels support the LGBTQ community,” said Thomas Krever, Chief Executive Offi cer for the Hetrick Martin Institute (HMI), a youth social services organization. “We don’t see this award as our award, it’s for all the hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ youth out there.”

Produced by Whoopi Goldberg, the reality television show Strut focused on transgender models becoming fashion household names in the world of fashion. The Oxygen Network series revealed how members struggled to make ends meet while navigating personal and

professional relationships. Honoree Sue Wicks said she could attest to

how much has changed since 2001, when she became one of the fi rst athletes in professional sports to come out. Wicks recalled how she revealed her sexual identity while still an active player with the WNBA’s New York Liberty because she felt a responsibility to be a role model to anyone who may have been struggling.

Wicks said in spite of the challenges ahead, there had been progress.

“I think these are wonderful times because I see people in the streets saying who they are, talking to their families and people standing up for who they are,” she noted. “We are defi ning what it means to be Americans, and nothing can destroy that tapestry.”

“Our message is simple: we are open for business,” said Camilo. “The fairs allows M/WBEs the ability to better learn our business so that we can do business with them.”

Camilo also discussed how DCAS is on track to exceed the dollars in contracts it awarded to M/WBE fi rms in the 2016 fi scal year. The department has awarded approximately $20 million in contracts to M/WBE fi rms thus far and also has an estimated $84 million in upcoming projects for its facilities team, including two construction management contracts. The DCAS Energy Team explained to M/WBE

vendors how they can become pre-qualifi ed for an estimated $50 million in upcoming energy projects.

The department announced that it will also be putting out a Request for Qualifi cations (RFQ) for General Construction Services in the fall, which will create a list of prequalifi ed vendors for potential contracts with city agencies for projects such as HVAC maintenance, LED retrofi ts and steam trap replacements, as well as installation and maintenance of solar energy systems.

Also announced was the launch of a $10 million Bond Collateral Assistance Fund for M/WBEs and small businesses bidding on city construction contracts. The program will allow businesses to apply for surety bonds of up to $500,000 or 50 percent of the contract amount, whichever is lesser, in order to meet cash collateral bond requirements.

“We know that to get a bond is a very capital-intensive process, and the problem that small businesses typically have is access to capital,” said Bishop. “The bond fund will be a game-changer.”

The Bond Collateral Assistance Fund comes on the heels of another contract fi nancing program for M/WBEs that the city unveiled in March, which has already provided more than $1 million to small businesses, Bishop said.

Also in March, SBS unveiled a streamlined application process for certifi cation, reducing the amount of paperwork by 30 percent.

“The certifi cation process has improved,” remarked Frank García, Chairman of New York State Coalition of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. “Especially with the amount of documents, it’s a lot better. It’s less intimidating.”

Sindhura Polsani, of IT company PamTen, said her fi rm recently completed the M/WBE certifi cation process, which she said took a total of ten weeks.

“Businesses might think it’s a scary process, but it wasn’t that diffi cult,” said Polsani. “There was a lot of information online. It took a lot of phone calls, but it was fairly painless.”

Polsani was attending the procurement fair to investigate contracting opportunities.

“It’s good to have all these companies in one place – it’s a valuable way to meet a lot of people at once,” she said.

“You get to learn what companies are

looking for in terms of contract needs,” added Raquel Rodríguez, Sales Director for GMD Industries. She said her business has been certifi ed for 10 years but was seeking to acquire city contracts. “It’s a good way to learn who you should be reaching out to at these agencies.”

Quenia Abreu, President of the New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce, said her organization helps Latino M/WBE businesses through the certifi cation process. She said she recently helped a Latino-owned pest control business access more than $4

million in city contracts.“Latino businesses can be apprehensive

about dealing with the city,” Abreu said. “Sometimes they come to us fi rst. It helps that they can deal with an entity like us that they’re already comfortable with.”

While Abreu applauded the city for its eff orts to help M/WBEs in recent years, she said there was still room for improvement.

“I still think Latino businesses are at a disadvantage. I’d like to see more inclusivity,” she remarked. “There should be more targeted outreach, and including of organizations that already have relationships with these businesses.”

El departamento anunció que también presentará una Solicitud de Califi cación (RFQ, por sus siglas en inglés) para Servicios Generales de Construcción en el otoño, que creará una lista de proveedores pre-califi cados para contratos potenciales con agencias municipales para proyectos como: mantenimiento HVAC, modifi caciones LED y reemplazos de válvulas de vapor, así como instalación y mantenimiento de sistemas de energía solar.

También se anunció el lanzamiento de un Fondo de Ayuda de Garantía de Bonos de $10 millones de dólares para las M/WBE y pequeñas empresas que licitan contratos de construcción de la ciudad. El programa permitirá a las empresas aplicar para fi anzas de hasta $500,000 dólares o 50 por ciento del monto del contrato, lo que sea menor, con el fi n de cumplir con los requisitos de garantía en efectivo colateral.

“Sabemos que conseguir un bono es un proceso muy intensivo en capital, y el problema que suelen tener las pequeñas empresas es el acceso al capital”, dijo Bishop. “El fondo de bonos será un punto de infl exión”.

El Fondo de Ayuda de Garantía de Bonos viene de la mano de otro programa de fi nanciamiento de contratos para las M/WBE que la ciudad reveló en marzo, que ya ha proporcionado más de $1 millón de dólares a pequeñas empresas, dijo Bishop.

También en marzo, SBS dio a conocer un proceso de solicitud simplifi cado para la certifi cación, reduciendo la cantidad de papeleo en un 30 por ciento.

“El proceso de certifi cación ha mejorado”, señaló Frank García, presidente de la Coalición Cámaras Hispanas de Comercio del Estado de Nueva York. “Especialmente con la cantidad de documentos, es mucho mejor, es menos intimidante”.

Sindhura Polsani, de la compañía de TI PamTen, dijo que su fi rma completó recientemente el proceso de certifi cación M/WBE, que dijo tomó un total de diez semanas.

“Las empresas podrían pensar que es un proceso de miedo, pero no fue tan difícil”, explicó. “Había mucha información en línea, tomó muchas llamadas telefónicas, pero fue bastante indoloro”.

Si bien Abreu aplaudió a la ciudad por sus esfuerzos para ayudar a las M/WBE en los últimos años, dijo que todavía hay margen de mejora.
