What is Digital Transformation?

Definition: The use of technology to radically improve an enterprise’s performance or customer experience

Pervasive Across all Industries:– Improve engagement with customers

– Efficiency to fund unknown future

– Robotic process automation for help and self services

– IT process automation

• Operational speed increase (higher revenues)

• OPEX reduction (lower costs)

– Development process

• Modernize toolchain

• Devops/Agile

• Cloud type development

Two Focuses for Service Providers with Digital Transformation

AUTOMATION is a Key Initial Goal in Both Approaches

Focused on extreme efficiency and lower OPEX

Communication SP Focus on Connectivity

Leverages automation for:

• Cost reduction and lowering OPEX, as a way to compete

• Ease of doing business to reduce the customer/service order “friction”

• In the NOC to drive operational efficiency and maintain SLA/QoE

• Workflow Focused

Focus on Revenue Generation and Innovation

Digital SP Focus on Experience

• Focused on move to mix

• Mobile, IP-centric, cloud-based first product strategy

• Customer Intimacy

• Cloud Focused (API Centric)

Building a Bridge Between Both Worlds

Hybrid networks and operationsare the normal state for the foreseeable future

New Intelligent Automation solutions are required

• Addressing both Network & IT challenges

• Bridging world views and accelerating digital transformation

• Gaining cloud value now

IP/MPLS

Customer Business Challenge:

Over-allocation of capacity at L3 and L0 to ensure service delivery

Redundancy also duplicated at each layer for high availability

Cost inefficient and resource intensive

The Network Environment:

Multi-vendor Layer 3 network

Multi-vendor Layer 0 network

Transport

BP ROA Use Case: Multi-Layer Optimization

BP ROA discovers multi-vendor IP topology including nodes and ports

BP MDSO discovers multi-vendor optical topology including IP port adjacency

ROA triggers LAG congestion KPI threshold notification from the network

ROA notifies MDSO of capacity exhaustion, which then checks port capacity upgrade eligibility

MDSO checks unused transponders availability for port capacity upgrade

MDSO provisions new optical path between transponders. If transponders are not available, MDSO notifies with “failed capacity upgrade” message
