In the 22 years of my life, many things have changed. In fact, I will venture to say that most things in my life have changed in terms of my priorities—that is, except for one constant: my love for food. For years I struggled with food, trying always to deprive myself of what I loved most to keep my weight at a reasonable place. I watched as my friends ate whatever they wanted and remained their skinny selves, while I would so much as look at a piece of chocolate cake and gain 10 pounds.

For so many years, I viewed my relationship with food with bitterness, and I absolutely hated that I had been born with a somewhat more-than-healthy appetite—that is—until I tried Weight Watchers. I went to my first Weight Watchers meeting with my mother when I was in 7th grade. We both left the meeting feeling skeptical and somewhat uneasy—the program just seemed too good to be true. Eat the foods I love and still lose weight? I didn’t believe it

That is, until I stepped on the scale the following week and saw that I had lost nine pounds. Of course, a lot of water weight is lost in the first week, so I didn’t expect anything the second. The second week, I lost another six pounds. After these miraculous first two weeks, my weight loss did slow down, but it came off nonetheless. I reached my weight loss goal within about three months, and I have been able to keep it off for nine years.

After nine years, I have grown so accustomed to having Weight Watchers as a part of my life that I no longer rely on any of the “Points” calculators or sliders, and can do all the figuring in my head. Whenever a friend needs to lose weight, they always know to call me from the grocery store or restaurant where they are to ask me how many points something is.

People see me measuring out my dressing or weighing my cereal and ask me about it, and I instantly perk up, telling them about how I have lived on Weight Watchers since middle school, and how it has changed my life. I owe the program so much, and I would love the opportunity to spread the message of Weight Watchers to those who struggle the way I did for so long.

I know that I would be a great leader for Weight Watchers meetings because of the simple fact that I whole-heartedly believe in the program. It has changed my life, and as a result, it has changed the lives of those around me who struggle with their weight. Through the Weight Watchers program, I have successfully banished the fear and contempt with which I used to view food. I have learned to embrace my love for food and simultaneously manage my weight without feeling deprived. Weight Watchers has truly gone from a “diet” I was trying so many years ago to a way of life I have grown to love.
