FROM THE PRINCIPAL Where has the time gone? We are fast approaching the end of Term 3 with only one week to go. Students have been displaying great active learning in all classrooms. Students’ efforts throughout the term have positioned them well to complete end of term assessment to the best of their ability. Well done students! Our school motto ‘Success Follows Effort’ has been very evident across the school. School Public Speaking Competition On Thursday morning, all our Year 4 to 6 students participated in the School Annual Public Speaking Competition. Many parents, staff and community members, along with all our Year 3 to 6 students, were informed, persuaded and entertained by the students’ speeches. Student effort was very evident in the high quality of the speeches and the confidence demonstrated by students when delivering their speeches. Congratulations students! Thank you to our judges Sally Hemming, Lynda Parbury and Cathy Carson, who had the very important and difficult task of selecting three students to represent Dirranbandi at the Balonne Public Speaking competition. Congratulations Darcy Persse, Theo Knight and Mia Sullivan! Dirranbandi will be hosting the Balonne Speaking Competition next term, Friday 12 October. Good luck students! Academic Success Guarantee The current cycle of our ASG program concludes next Thursday! Students who have been part of the ASG program have made fantastic improvements and we are looking forward to their continuing success. The next ASG cycle will commence next term Relevant details include: All parents are invited to a celebration pancake breakfast on Friday morning 21 September, from

8.15am. At the breakfast teacher will hand out individual student reports indicating student progress on their

PLP Reading and Number goals and also Attendance information. Students who are currently participating in ASG program, whose attendance is at or above 90% are

automatically invited to participate again for the next ten week cycle, commencing next term. Students who are currently participating in the ASG program, but whose attendance has fallen

below the 90% mark, but their days absent have not exceeded 20 days, are invited to participate in the next cycle. However, their attendance will need to reach at least 90% (no more than 20 days absent) again to ensure on-going inclusion in the program.

PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

On Thursday, we conducted our school ‘Public Speaking Competition’ for our Year 4, 5 and 6 students. This activity builds student confidence over the three years that they participate, and it is always very rewarding for staff and parents to witness this growth. We sincerely thank Mrs Cathy Carson, Mrs Lynda Parbury and Mrs Sally Hemming for judging the competition. Their efforts are very much appreciated by staff and students. We congratulate everyone on their participation and courage! Our judges and parents were most impressed by the support the speakers gave each other and the respect they awarded their peers whilst they all spoke. Congratulations to our three school representatives: Darcy Persse- ‘Social Media’ Mia Sullivan- ‘The need to be proactive not reactive’ Theo Knight- ‘Why homework should be banned’ These students will go on to the Balonne District Public Speaking Competition which will be held this year at our school on October 12th, 10am. Parents welcome to attend.

FROM THE HOC

There seems to be a buzz in our school each day as I walk around. Students are actively participating in their learning, revision or

assessment. Teachers are moving around from student to student to offer feedback and guide improvements, or are engaged in

whole class teaching that is curriculum focussed with clear expectations often displayed on visual charts within the classroom.

This concept is part of Visible Learning.

Over the past week:

P-2 students wrote about their observations of the day and night sky from their sleepover last week

Year 3/4 students were fortunate to have a lesson with Angela in the kitchen last week. In small groups they cooked eggs in a

variety of different ways and talked about the different cooking methods and outcomes.

Year 4-6 students worked extremely hard on developing and rehearsing their speeches, and presenting them at the school

Public Speaking Competition this Thursday. I was fortunate to be able to watch a few of the speeches. There was a feeling of

excitement in the room, so much positivity and students were exchanging encouraging words. This competition truly brings

some wonderful outcomes.

Year 7/8 students worked on Geography assessments, developing PowerPoints to present their information.

Tractor Day - The SRC’s Tractor Day was held this Friday with lots of

exciting activities for students of all ages. Stay tuned for next week’s Dazzler

for photos of the event.

WHAT CAUSES A SINKHOLE BY KLAUS ANDREWS

Sink holes can be caused by heavy things on soft soil and when the heavy weight is on the soft soil it can cause a sinkhole. And when sink holes occur the hole in the ground is very big.

Sinkholes are common hazards in mining regions, plaguing areas where miners have burrowed into layers of soluble minerals and accidental floods have followed. But in Berezniki, as often happens in Russia, the problem has been magnified by past practices in which safety was not always the foremost concern.

Describing the Natural gases and the ‘Door to Hell’

- Derweze. By Bobbo Weatherall Natural gas occurs deep beneath the earth's surface. Natural gas consists

mainly of methane, a compound with one carbon atom and four

hydrogen atoms. Natural gas also contains small amounts of hydrocarbon

gas liquids and nonhydrocarbon gases. We use natural gas as a fuel and to

make materials and chemicals.

SOME OF OUR PUBLIC SPEAKING SPEECHES LAUGHTER IS BY FAR THE BEST MEDICINE BY CHLOE BROWN

A blonde woman was speeding so a blonde policeman pulled her up, he said ‘can I see your drivers licence please’. ‘What’s a driver’s licence? the woman says. ‘Something with a picture of you on it’, he replies. ‘Oh, ok.’ The woman rummaged through her wallet till she found a mirror, ‘there you go,’ she says handing the mirror to the officer. ‘Well what do you know, you’re a police officer too!!‘ The next day when the Sargent finds out, the police officer is fired and the woman goes to prison for failing to present her driver’s licence several times. Sure, it’s fun to share a good laugh. But did you know it can actually improve your health? It’s true: laughter is one strong medicine! It draws people together in ways that trigger healthy physical and emotional changes in the body. Did you know that laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts your mood, makes pain retire, and also stops you from getting stressed on a daily basis. As children, you probably used to laugh hundreds of times a day, but as adult’s life tends to be more serious and laughter occurs less frequent. By seeking out more opportunities for humour and laughter, though, you can improve your emotional health, strengthen your relationships, find greater happiness in life and even live longer! Wanna hear a bad cat joke? Just kitten!!! These days everybody is trying to find ways to live a longer life when the answer has always been right in front of your eyes! Do you know what I am talking about? I think you do! Laughter, the best medicine for any illness. It has been scientifically proven that laughing will actually improve your health and wellbeing, and if you don’t believe me then you can even google it! Who’s a dessert’s favorite actor...? Robert Brownie. Jnr. These days almost everybody is going to the gym or getting a treadmill at home and advertisements are trying to encourage you to this when really all you need to do is laugh your head off! What do you call sad coffee… a depresso! I have a joke for you Miss Glass… you drink so much tea if you were a dinosaur then you would be a tea rex! And Miss Mac…why is the AFL field always so wet…because AFL players always dribble! See from being bored of all the other speeches before me you now feel so alive and happy!

NOT CONNECTING BUT ISOLATING BY EMILY COX Some people believe that technology connects them to people and their friends. Sometimes this is the case but sometimes technology can iso-late people from not talking to not even going outside! At first glance, talking to friends on social media or contacts seems to have a great sense of connectedness but talking to people on technology stops people from talking to people outside of their own room. Technology can result in no friends, no education and sometimes obesity. Have you ever wondered why you have not seen your friend in 2 weeks and you know they would have told you if they were going away? Well the reason is TECHNOLOGY! Most people think technology is the best thing that’s ever happened to them. Well I’m here to tell you it is the WORST! Not only for you is it the worst but for your friends and your family too! If there is anyone who has any technology at home please just leave it alone for an hour or more and talk to your family, friends and pets. I would like you do this every day so you are NOT addicted to technology! As much as you think your safe you are absolutely not safe. On average some kids and teenagers spend about 2 staring at a screen. This amount of time means they could be getting obese, cyberbullied, having sleep problems and have a negative performance at school. It does not matter what you do online whether it be games or social media you are not safe!! Remember to go outside once in a while and have fun always. Just remember this when you are on any kind of technology. Life is what you choose it to be and not what technology chooses for you! Tell your friends, family and everyone around you this sentence. If you do this you’re not just doing it for me but for everyone. In my opinion technology does not connect it just keeps you from doing what you love and always love doing. Technology is an isolation not a connection. The only thing technology is a connection to is NOTHING! Not even to you. If you do always have any kind of technology in your hand then it is possible that you will gain weight, have headaches, neck or backaches, dry or red eyes and it is possible to have carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition where someone experiences pain and numbness in the hand caused by compression of a nerve in their wrist. I hope no one has or ever will have carpal tunnel syndrome. This condition sounds real ly painful. Some main treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome are avoiding movements that cause pain, anti-inflammatory medications, wearing a splint at night, and occasionally surgery. Some people believe technology connects them to everyone but this never the case NOT EVER!

WWE FAKE OR REAL? BY LINCOLN WALKER ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE, AND THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE, YOU'RE FIRED!, IT DOESN'T MATTER!, "FINALLY, THE ROCK HAS COME BACK! THESE ARE ALL CATCHPHRASES OF WWE. WHAT IS WWE? WWE STANDS FOR … WORLD WRESTLING ENTERATAINMENT AND IT IS A POPULAR SHOW ON TV. PEOPLE SAY THAT A SCRIPT IS WRITTEN FOR THE WRESTLERS AND THEY ARE JUST ACTORS. THEY SAY EVERYTHING IS MAKE BELIEVE AND NO-ONE GETS HURT, IT’S FAKE. SO WHAT DO YOU THINK… IS WWE FAKE OR REAL? A LOT OF WRESTLERS STARTED THEIR CAREERS IN OTHER SPORTS BEFORE COMING TO WWE. BUT NOW THEY ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR GREAT WRESTLING SKILLS AND MEMORABLE MOVES. ROMAN REIGNS, DWYANE JOHNSON AND BROCK LESNAR WERE PRO FOOTBALLERS. 7 FOOT PAUL ’THE BIG SHOW’ WIGHT AND ANDRE THE GIANT WERE BASKETBALLERS. RHONDA ROUSEY WINNER OF AN OLYMPIC BRONZ MEDAL FOR JUDO AND 11 TIMES U.F.C BANTAM WEIGHT CHAMPION ARE ALL NOW WWE SUPERSTARS. THESE PEOPLE ARE ALL PROFESIONAL ATHLETES AND GREAT WRESTLERS NOT ACTORS. THEY SAY THEY WRITE SCRIPTS FOR THE WRESTLERS TO DECIDE WHO IS GOING TO WIN OR LOSE, BUT I THINK THE SCRIPTS ARE WRITTEN TO GIVE THE WRESTLERS A CHANCE TO PRACTISE THEIR SKILLS AND PERFECT THEIR MOVES LIKE BELLY FLOP, SPEAR, HEAD LOCK, BACKFLIP, TOMBSTONE PILE DRIVER, SUPERMAN PUNCH AND CARTWHEEL KICKS. THESE STUNTS ARE ALL MOVES TO GET THE ADVANTAGE TO WIN THE MATCH, NOT TO ENTERTAIN THE CROWDS. THEY SAY WWE IS JUST A SHOW AND ALL THE WRESTLERS ARE JUST ACTORS BUT TO GET PUNCHES, KICKS, AND BLOWS TO THE BODY EVERY MATCH WOULD STILL HURT! THEY STILL HAVE ACCIDENTS AND BREAK BONES AND GET BRUISES AND TORN MUSCLES EVEN WHEN THEY DO THEIR STUNTS RIGHT. I THINK THEY HAVE A SCRIPT TO GIVE THE WRESTERS TIME OFF TO MEND. TO BE A TOP ATHLETE IN ANY SPORT YOU HAVE TO EXERCISE, EAT RIGHT AND PRACTISE YOUR SKILLS EVERY DAY. THESE PROFESSIONAL WRESTLERS SPEND UP TO 5 HOURS A DAY IN THE GYM TO PRACTISE THEIR SKILLS. A LOT OF PEOPLE ADMIRE THESE WRESTLERS AND WANT TO BE JUST LIKE THEM. LIKE ANY GOOD TV SHOW THERE ARE ALWAYS ….GOOD GUYS AND BAD GUYS. THE BAD GUYS IN WWE ALWAYS SEEM TO BREAK BONES AND WIN USING DIRTY TRICKS. FACT - STEVE AUSTIN BROKE HIS NECK AND HAD TO GIVE UP THE SPORT FOR OVER 11 YEARS. FACT – PAIGE RETIRED AS SHE HAD SEVERAL BROKEN DISCS IN HER BACK AND DID NOT WANT TO END UP IN A WHEELCHAIR. FACT – JOHN CENA HAD HIS CHEST MUSCLES SO BADLY TORN HE HAD TO GIVE UP FOR 12 MONTHS TO HEAL. I DON’T CARE WHAT THEY SAY I THINK WWE IS REAL BECAUSE WRESTLERS LIKE STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN AND PAIGE HAVE HAD TO RETIRE FROM THE SPORT AS THEY HAVE GOTTEN REALLY BADLY INJURED AND COME ON, CAN YOU BELIEVE SOMEONE COULD TELL THE ROCK OR TRIPLE H THEY HAD TO LOSE THEIR MATCH. ANYWAY I WILL STILL KEEP WATCHING IT AND KEEP YELLING AT THE TV AND TELLING THE PLAYERS HOW THEY SHOULD KILL THEIR OPPONENT. WWE FAKE OR REAL I WILL LET YOU MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND!
