FROM THE PRINCIPAL Every Day Counts Whole School attendance to date is 96.9%. As a school we would like to see students aiming to have 95-100% attendance. That is no more than 10 days in a school year and only 2 ½ days per term. Some attendance data from last week: best day attended was Tuesday 96.7% worst day attended was Friday at 91.7% For students maintaining attendance at 90% or above we are offering an additional layer of support, through the Academic Success Guarantee initiative. Additional support is targeted at supporting students to meet or beat their personal learning goals for reading and number. Please encourage your child to be at school. Every day of learning counts! Sports Captain Elections Congratulations to all students who nominated for Sport Captain Positions. All students presented a speech to their peers explaining why they would make a great Captain for their respective Sporting House. All students are to be congratulated on the way in which they prepared and delivered speeches. Sports Captains for Culgoa and Balonne will be announced at Parade on Monday. SRC Elections Elections for Student Representative Council have been held in classrooms this week. All students not already elected into leadership positions had the opportunity to nominate and deliver a short speech to their class. One student is selected per year level. SRC will also be announced at Parade on Monday. Personal Learning Profile Meetings (PLP) Thank you to parents and students who participated in PLP meetings this week. Now that learning goals have been set for the term ahead, teachers will be working with students to achieve learning goals. Parents can also help by regularly reminding and asking their child about their learning goals. Hello, my name is Hannah Trudgett and the students know me as Miss Trudgett. I am the District Relief Teacher for Dirranbandi. I have previously taught in the Sunshine Coast area and in Cairns. I enjoy reading, drawing and hiking (especially trails with a great view). I look forward to meeting you all in the classrooms.

P-2 TERM 1 UNIT OVERVIEWS English - In this unit, students read, view and listen to a variety of literary texts to explore how characters are represented in print and images. Students identify character qualities in texts. They compare how similar characters are depicted in two literary texts and write a text expressing a preference for one character, giving reasons. Maths Week 1 – Number Week 2 – Data Week 3 – Number (Year 1-2 - addition and subtraction, Prep – Number ID) Week 4 – Fractions Week 5 – Number (Year 1-2 - addition and subtraction, Prep – Number ID) Week 6 – Year 1-2 - Time, Prep – Sequencing events. Week 7 – Patterns Week 8 – 2D shapes Week 9 – Number Week 10 – Revision - Number Science - In this unit, students will use their senses to observe the needs of living things, both animals and plants. They begin to understand that observing is an important part of science and that scientists discuss and record their observations. Students learn that the survival of all living things is reliant on basic needs being met, and there are consequences when needs are not met. They analyse different types of environments and how each provides for the needs of living things. Students consider the impact of human activity and natural events on basic needs. Digital Technologies - Prep students are learning to use the computer mouse safely and identify letters on the keyboard so that they can use simple programs to sort data, draw images and create ideas. They will use a variety of games that allow them to refine their skills in clicking, dragging and dropping and drawing. They will create shape and color patterns, and will learn to type their name and format text. Year 1-2 students will consolidate their knowledge about computer hardware components, identifying the basic parts and explaining what each part does. They will create simple posters and presentations about themselves and the needs of a living thing, using formatting components including text boxes, clip art, word art and background formatting in Microsoft Office Software. Health - In Health students will explore information about what makes them unique, identifying their strengths and achievements. Students will identify safe settings where they can move and play safely and identify actions that keep them safe in different settings. Students identify different emotions people experience in different situations. PE - In Physical Education students will work on their Swimming and athletics skills with a focus on safe entries in the water, underwater skills and movement and swimming strokes. Students will also refine the fundamental movement skills of running, throwing and jumping to prepare for the Athletics carnival. Music - Foundations of Music 1 - In this unit students will learn the foundations of music through non pitched percussion and vocal skills. Students will develop their aural skills by the exploration of sounds and music by imitating pitch, rhythms, chants and songs. Students will then apply these skills to create and perform learning musicianship and audience skills.

YEAR 3-4 TERM 1 UNIT OVERVIEWS English - For the first half of Term 1 we are examining the language features which are used to persuade an audience. The features include using high modality verbs (e.g. must, will, need to), evaluative language (e.g. adorable, horrendous), rhetorical questions (you wouldn’t want that, would you?) and facts. Students need to write persuasive paragraphs and identify the language features used in other texts. For the second half of Term 1 we are learning about how authors use descriptive language to construct characters. Students will be writing their own imaginative narratives where they will develop skills in providing imagery and building tension for the reader.

YEAR 3-4 TERM 1 UNIT OVERVIEWS continued ... Maths - This term in Number and Algebra we are focusing on representing numbers to and beyond 10 000, counting patterns to 10 000, and multiplication and division facts. In Measurement and Geometry we are learning to measure length, mass, capacity and time using scaled instruments. In Statistics and Probability we are conducting chance experiments. Students will need to list the possible outcomes, identify their probability and examine whether the outcomes can occur independently of each other. Science - In Science this term we are learning to group living things based on observable features. Students will be involved in a number of field studies to observe common characteristics of living things such as growth, movement, reproduction and response to stimuli. This will help them to distinguish between living and non-living things. HASS - This semester in HASS we are studying the importance of community. We will explore how it has changed and stayed the same over time. Students will also learn about the significance of certain celebrations and commemorations for different groups of people in our community. Digital Technologies - The first half of the term will focus on learning about peripheral devices. They will identify these devices as input, output or storage devices and will select appropriate devices to use to complete given tasks. The later half of the term will see students explore different ways to represent data, including encoding and decoding a word or phrase, exploring Braille, Morse Code and QR codes. It is anticipated that students will begin to use a new coding resource to our school, the Micro: Bit. Health - In Health, students will explore the impact of positive social interaction on self-identity. They will investigate different types of friendships and examine the qualities we look for in a friend, as well as their roles and responsibilities. Students will learn how to communicate respectfully with friends to resolve conflict and challenging issues in friendships. They will reflect on why friendships change over time and investigate strategies to assist them in establishing and maintaining respectful friendships. PE - In Physical Education students will work on their Swimming and athletics skills with a focus on safe entries in the water, underwater skills and movement and swimming strokes. Students will also refine the fundamental movement skills of running, throwing and jumping to prepare for the Athletics carnival. Music - Foundations of Music 3 - In this unit students will form a solid grounding of basic fundamentals that form the foundations of music. Students will be exposed to a variety of experiences that allow them make, respond to and perform these foundation fundamentals. Particular focus of attention will be paid to rhythmic devices, pitch and melodic devices such as dynamics, basic rhythms, tempo and how to apply them to music.

YEAR 5-6 TERM 1 UNIT OVERVIEWS English - In the first unit, students listen to, read, view and interpret a range of news articles and reports from journals and newspapers to respond to viewpoints portrayed in media texts. Students apply comprehension strategies, focusing on particular viewpoints portrayed in a range of media texts. They create a digital, multimodal feature article, including written and visual elements, from a particular viewpoint. In the second unit students listen to, read, view and interpret a range of multimodal texts including comics, cartoons and animations. They produce a digital multimodal short story exploring a character's behaviour when faced with an ethical dilemma

Science - In this unit students analyse the structural features and behavioural adaptations that assist living things to survive in their environment. They understand that science involves using evidence and comparing data to develop explanations. Students investigate the relationships between the factors that influence how plants and animals survive in their environments, including those that survive in extreme environments, and use this knowledge to design creatures with adaptations that are suitable for survival in prescribed environments.

YEAR 5-6 TERM 1 UNIT OVERVIEWS continued... Maths - Students develop understandings of: Number and place value - Identify and describe properties of prime and composite numbers, select

and apply mental and written strategies to problems involving all four operations Fractions and decimals - Order and compare fractions with related denominators, add and

subtract fractions with related denominators, calculate the fraction of a given quantity and solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of fractions

Money and financial mathematics - investigate and calculate percentage discounts of 10%, 25% and 50% on sale items.

Using units of measurement - solve problems involving the comparison of lengths and areas, and interpret and use timetables

Chance - Represent the probability of outcomes as a fraction or decimal and conduct chance experiments.

Data representation and interpretation - Revise different types of data displays, interpret data displays, investigate the similarities and differences between different data displays, identify the purpose and use of different displays and identify the difference between categorical and numerical data.

HASS - Business and Economics - In HASS this term students will analyse the needs and wants of the community to create a business to provide either goods or services. Students will create advertisements and a budget to start up their business. Media - In Media this term students will be integrated with the units of English to create digital multimodal feature article and a multimodal short story. Digital technologies - Year 5-6 students will focus on using the Internet to acquire, validate and organise information they seek to locate following posing relevant questions. They will use familiar software within the Microsoft Office package to present their information. Design Technologies - In Design Technologies students will be integrated with the unit of Science to design creatures with adaptations that are suitable for survival in prescribed environments. Health - In Health, students recognise that emotions and behaviours influence how people interact. They understand that relationships are established and maintained by applying skills. Students will identify practices that keep themselves and others safe and well. PE - In Physical Education students will work on their Swimming and athletics skills with a focus on safe entries in the water, underwater skills and movement and swimming strokes. Students will also refine the fundamental movement skills of running, throwing and jumping to prepare for the Athletics carnival. Music - Recorder Buzz - In this unit students will learn to play basic recorder. The recorder is the oldest pitched instrument in the world and can be dated back to the caveman days, being originally carved from bones. Students will learn the history, the anatomy and how to play simple songs on the recorder. Students will also learn musicianship and theoretical aspects of music through the exposure to rhythmic devices, composition and performances.

YEAR 7-8 TERM 1 UNIT OVERVIEWS English - Students will complete two units in term one. The first unit focuses on persuasion in speeches and the media and the second unit focuses on biographies. Throughout both units, students will focus on learning, using, creating and identifying a variety of language devices and text structures that engage, inspire and captivate audiences. Geography - Students will explore water in the world and how important water is to human life and experience. Students will consolidate their understanding of geographical information, geographical data, and how to identify trends and patterns in data. Students will continue to build their understanding of cartographic conventions and how to use them to read and create their own maps following cartographic conventions.

Science - This term students will identify cells as the basic units of living things. They will use microscopes and images to distinguish between multicellular and unicellular organisms and identify specialised cellular structures. Students will understand how to prepare wet mount slides and correctly construct biological drawings from microscopic observations. They will compare similarities and differences between plant and animal cell structure. Students will examine the relationship between the structure and function of specialised plant and animal cells, including reproductive cells, and understand the advantages of cell specialisation. They will analyse the development of cell theory as a result of historical scientific work and use the findings to validate the tenets of the theory. Students will identify and construct scientifically investigable questions and problems related to the relationship between cell structure and function.

Design Technology - Students will explore current and future food and fibre industries looking for a way to transform the production and use of food and fibre products. Throughout the investigation students will explore sustainability and how sustainability impacts current design and production and the significant impact it will have on the future of food and fibre production. Indigenous Languages - Students studying Gamilaraay will explore numbers this term using numbers to describe and count groups of animals, objects and people. Students will learn to count from one to 100 and use numbers in conversational sentences. Digital Technologies - Year 7-8 students are learning about different types of networks, how data is transmitted and how network specifications affect performance. They will create a presentation (choice of oral, digital or multimodal) to demonstrate these understandings. Students will also investigate how digital system represent text, audio and images in binary and will write an explanation of this. It is envisaged that they will use our new programming resource, the Micro: Bit to simulate data transmission. Health - In Health, students investigate the long and short-term effects that alcohol and other drugs have on the body and the laws associated with their use. Students examine health information related to alcohol and other drugs, evaluate possible health concerns and implement actions to promote wellbeing in their school community.

PE - In Physical Education students will work on their Swimming and athletics skills with a focus on safe entries in the water, underwater skills and movement and swimming strokes. Students will also develop and perform specialised running (sprinting), throwing (shot put) and jumping skills (long jump). They explore the elements of movement and use feedback to improve accuracy and control. Ag Studies - Years 7-10 - The Cattle Production System – Grassfed vs Feedlot In this unit students will examine the inputs and outputs involved in a cattle feedlot and grassfed cattle production system. They will analyse the energy transfer system within the enterprise and investigate factors within the inputs, outputs and transfer processes that affect the final premium beef product. Students will compare and describe the production systems of feedlot and grassfed cattle and compare the advantages and disadvantages of each system. Students will visit an animal production enterprise in the Dirranbandi district to determine the various inputs, outputs and processes that occur within the selected system, and the limiting factors that can reduce or hinder production on a farm. They will communicate with the cattle producer and his staff to identify how a farmer will attempt to overcome the limiting factors by correct selection of cattle inputs. This will ensure that the basic processes in a cattle feedlot will operate efficiently to produce a quality beef product. Music - Years 7/8/9 - Sound is all around - In this unit students will learn theoretical and musicianship aspects of music. Sound can be manipulated to form music, students will compose using rhythmic devices and self created sounds from a variety of objects and manipulate these into music this will cumulate the learning into a performance. Students will be exposed to rhythm, pitch, compositional devices and performances working together as individuals and as group ensembles.

YEAR 9-10 TERM 1 OVERVIEWS

English - Students in will complete two units in term one. The first unit focuses on the Australian identity and will focus on exploring representations of Australia’s peoples, history and culture. The second unit will hone in on different perspectives and how authors convey different perspectives on issues, events, people groups and experiences. Both units are linked by an in depth study that includes visual, language, text and literary devices and how they are used to communicate a message. Year 9 Maths Unit 1 Pythagoras and trigonometry: Investigate Pythagoras’ Theorem and its application to solving simple problems involving right angled triangles. Use similarity to investigate the constancy of the sine, cosine and tangent ratios for a given angle in right-angled triangles and apply trigonometry to solve right-angled triangle problems Unit 2 Probability: List all outcomes for two-step chance experiments, both with and without replacement using tree diagrams or arrays. Assign probabilities to outcomes and determine probabilities for events. Calculate relative frequencies from given or collected data to estimate probabilities of events involving 'and' or 'or'. Year 10 Maths Unit 1 Pythagoras and trigonometry: Solve right-angled triangle problems including those involving direction and angles of elevation and depression Unit 2 Probability: Describe the results of two and three-step chance experiments, both with and without replacements, assign probabilities to outcomes and determine probabilities of events. Investigate the concept of independence Science - This term students will explore genetics and heredity. They will examine the relationship between DNA, genes, alleles and the heritable traits of an organism. Students will describe and compare the two main forms of cell division in eukaryotes and explain how genetic material is transferred from parent to offspring during cell division. They will examine how meiosis and mutation contribute to genetic variety between organisms. Students will analyse different patterns of inheritance for autosomal and sex-linked crosses and use Punnett squares to predict genotypes and phenotypes of offspring from different genetic crosses. They will consider how genetic diseases are inherited and analyse a multi-generational pedigree to describe patterns of inheritance. Students will explore how genetic research is applied to areas such as genetic modification and genetic testing and consider the impacts of these on society and individuals, including ethical considerations.

YEAR 9-10 TERM 1 OVERVIEWS continued... Geography - Students will study biomes and food security exploring how different biomes have been changed and manipulated both by human and natural factors. Students will further explore how these changes impact the production of food and fibre and answer questions around the impact geographical location, human and natural factors have on food and fibre production.

Design Technology - Students will investigate and make judgments on how the principles of food safety, preservation, preparation, presentation and sensory perceptions influence the creation of food solutions for healthy eating. They critically analyse factors, including social, ethical and sustainability considerations that impact on designed solutions for global preferred futures. Students will apply design thinking as they design and produce a food product suitable for sale at a community level, and design a food production, delivery and sale system.

Year 9 Digital Technologies - Year 9 students will act as a network solutions expert to create a multimodal presentation about network types and topologies in order to suggest a network option for the ‘CEO of a company’. They will also be required to explain simple data compression including its benefits and the effects of compression on quality. Health - In this unit, students explore public health and advertising campaigns to determine their effectiveness on adolescent choices about using alcohol and other drugs. Students examine norms and stereotypes surrounding adolescent alcohol and drug use. They investigate information about alcohol and other drugs; standard drinks; blood alcohol concentration and alcohol and drug laws. Students examine scenarios and use the decision-making process to be able to make smart choices in regards to alcohol and other drug use. PE - In Physical Education students will work on their Swimming and athletics skills with a focus on safe entries in the water, underwater skills and movement and swimming strokes. Students will also investigate, develop and evaluate fitness programs that aim to improve fitness and physical activity prior to the Athletics carnival. Year 9 Work Studies – The Real Game - Work Studies helps young people plan for and shape their future and make a contribution to the wider community by providing them with the essential knowledge, understanding and skills for participation in the rapidly changing world of work. Students begin preparation for the working world by developing understanding of themselves in relation to work, recognising their aspirations, their rights and responsibilities as workers, as well as employer expectations and the diversity of work opportunities. They learn to understand what work is, how and why it is changing and what this means for their future in The Real Game is an innovative, interactive and experiential program. The Real Game is a response to the particular challenges the new working world throws at young people. It not only introduces them to the nature of the future they face, but helps them understand it and gives them skills to explore how they can function successfully in it. ‘Creative Welding’: 23, 24 March 2019

Tutor: Dion Cross – has been winning awards

since 2006 for his creations –

‘a self-taught artist creating modern and unique metal

sculptures from various types of materials.

Recycled metals are the main ingredient of these creations,

breathing new life into often discarded items.’

Dirranbandi Arts Council is working with RTC to deliver this

COMMUNITY NOTICES LITTLE ATHLETICS 2019

Dirranbandi and District Little A’s will be holding their AGM

on Monday, 11th February at 4pm, at the Little A’s Shed.

This will only be a brief meeting and will include voting for the

executive team. It will also be an overview of how we are going to

run our Little A’s Program this year, including when the sign on day will be. Little A’s will be run

on a Monday during Term 2 and 3, at the school,

starting Week 2, Term 2. Any new families who are interested in getting involved in

Little A’s are welcome to along. We will also be doing a photo shoot with the new equipment, which we have purchased through the aid of a grant through

the Coles Community Sport Fund, late in 2018. All members who were registered in 2018, as asked to be there

at the Little A’s shed, in full Little A’s uniform for this photo shoot. As these photos will be published in public media,
