trial and error- lots of error!

designer. During her career

as a womens and

childrenswear designer shehas worked for many of the

fashion industry’s major

high street retailers and has

seen first hand how

garments are professionally

constructed in factories and

sample rooms.

 Week 1&2: Woven TopUsing a commercial pattern you will learn how

to create a modern woven T-shirt. Step by step

instructions will be given throughout the

sessions.

This project runs across 2 sessions. In the first

session we will discuss how to read and follow a

comericial pattern for the best fit and results,

then cut out a top in your size. We will practice

narrow hems and button loops.

In the second session you will construct yourtop.

Measure yourself for the perfect fit

Read and use a commercial pattern

Pin and cut out a pattern on fabric efficiently 

Construct a garment inc. sewing seams,finishing seams, key hole opening with buttonand loop fastening, hemming

 Week 3&4: Skirt Using a commercial pattern we will select from

the options available to learn how to create a

fitted A-line or pencil skirt.

This project runs across 2 sessions. In the firstsession we will remind ourselves how to read

and follow a commercial pattern then cut out a

skirt in your size. You will do a practice zip

insertion.

In the second session you will construct your

skirt. Step by step instructions will be giventhroughout the sessions with plenty of time for

questions.

Measure yourself fot the perfect fitting skirt

Read and use a commercial pattern

Construct a garment inc. sewing seams,finishing seams, inserting a zip, hemmingoptions, attaching a waistband, buttons and

 button holes

Optional: darts, lining, other fastenings.

 Week 5&6: Make your own! As a group we will look at the different ways of

customising patterns for fit and also to create your own

look.

 You will then choose either the skirt or top pattern to

re-make with styling amendments.

Options for customisation include:

  Add a patch pocket or collar to the top

  Create a button through opening to the top

at front or back or to the front of the skirt

  Add elastic or darts to the top to create a

fitted sihouette

  Add pockets to the skirt

  make the skirt or top in a different fabric

and learn how to use different seam and hem

finishes to suit

 

Or if you wish you may make any of the other garments

offered on the patterns (trousers or soft jacket)

Connue Dessmaking wh Cray Sew&So...Following on from the beginners course there will be a series of

Bring Your Own Dressmaking sessions where you can bring a

pattern of your choice and work through it with our help.

Intermediate dressmakers classes will be available from

September focusing on working with different types of fabrics

including stretch knitted fabrics and more fluid syntheticfabrics and dressmaking for a special occassion.

Or choose from a series of half day and full day courses to

continue to build on your dressmaking skills and knowledge

including making a sheered sundress, a little girls pini dress

 with applique or a vintage 1950s style dress.

1 to 1 lessons are also available- Please contact Sarah for details.
