2014 Bringing Significant NewCNC Manufacturing Opportunitiesto East Lake High School

SME Education Foundation an-nounced late in 2013 that East LakeHigh School is the chosen recipient ofmachining technology worth morethan $68,000. Haas Automation willprovide the school’s award-winning en-gineering program with a top-of-the-line, Haas TM-1P CNC vertical millincluding 6 control simulator modules.

And that isn’t all. Career TechnicalEducation Foundation, Inc. (CTEF) isproud to announce that East LakeHigh School Academy of Engineeringhas received a special allocation fromPinellas County Schools Career Techni-cal Adult Education Department. Theallocation will purchase a large com-mercial-grade Haas computerizedCNC lathe, valued at almost $60,000,to be located at East Lake HighSchool.

Imagine combining the precisionand speed of a computer with the mostadvanced machiningtechnology. That’s why CNC (Com-puter Numerical Control) technologyis rapidly advancing the manufacturing

industry, and why U.S. manufacturingjobs have been experiencing a renais-sance since 2010, with increased de-mand for workers eachyear. Manufacturing’s blue-collarimage is being replaced with a youngtech-savvy workforce. CNC-skilledworkers earn an average of $50,000 peryear.

Students at East Lake High SchoolAcademy of Engineering will be amongthe first trained with this in-demandmanufacturing skillset as part its STEM(science, technology, engineering, andmath) curriculum. The CNC lathe willgive students the opportunity to usetheir computer skills to build almostanything they can imagine, allowingstudents to innovate with various mate-rials, such as Corian, wood, and metal.

“I’m most appreciative that ourCTAE department was able to step upand assist with the funding for this ini-tiative,” Pinellas superintendentMichael A. Grego said. “The depart-ment’s willingness to provide fundingwill allow East Lake High students thechance to expand their understandingof science, technology, engineering andmathematics and will help preparethem for challenging careers after grad-uation.”

A Track Record of Success The ten-year-old Academy of En-

gineering at East Lake High School hasexceeded expectations from day one.Starting with just 22 students in 2003,the Academy has since enrolled over600 students. Their wait list averages100 students per year. Graduates havean average weighted GPA of 4.3. Over90% go on to pursue post-secondarydegrees, with 71% declaring engineer-ing as their major.

Their curriculum, which empha-sizes hands-on experience, was devel-oped using the principles outlined inProject Lead The Way’s “Pathway toEngineering.” In 2008, the Academywas recognized by Project Lead TheWay as a top 10 national high school. In 2009, the Pinellas County Board ofEducation identified the Academy as aCenter for Excellence. Earlier in 2013,the SME Education Foundation desig-nated the Academy as a PRIMEschool, bringing national attention tothe school’s outstanding manufacturingprogram.

Rodney Grover, Senior Develop-ment Officer for the SME EducationFoundation which facilitated the grant, was enthusiastic in his praise: “The EastLake PRIME program under the direc-

tion of Paul Wahnish is producing re-sults for the manufacturing communityby inspiring, preparing and supportingthe next generation of innovators forindustry. Thanks to the generosity ofHaas Automation, Career TechnicalEducation Foundation and others, stu-dents at East Lake will be instructedusing the latest in technology.”

Preparing the Next Generation ofEngineers

The receipt of the vertical mill willenable East Lake students to becomeproficient with current industry ma-chining and CNC standard practices. In order to operate the CNC mill, stu-dents will learn to translate academictheory into practice using mathematics, especially trigonometry and geometry.CNC machinery also requires studentsto have basic computer coding skills.Eventually, they will also be able tocompete for paid internships that areonly available to students experiencedwith CNC machines.

By allowing the students to createtheir own parts (such as wheels, gearsand sprockets), the Haas CNC verticalmill will also allow the Academy to savethousands of dollars each year.

“The manufacturing industry is

getting increasingly sophisticated,”noted Peter Zierhut, representative,Haas Automation. “We are committedto helping prepare the next generationof engineers and technologists. And werecognize that commitment needs tostart early. Over the years, we haveplaced over three thousand machinetools at various educational institutionsto help train future engineers and ma-chinists.”

An ongoing commitment thatRodney Grover readily acknowledges:“The SME Education Foundation isgrateful for the support of both HaasAutomation and the Gene Haas Foun-dation who most recently gave $1 mil-lion in scholarship funding to supportthe machine trades throughout NorthAmerica.”

This is another great opportu-nity for East Lake students at theacademy, which recently received na-tional recognition by being desig-nated as one of eleven PRIMEModel Schools in the U.S. for teach-ing an exemplary manufacturing cur-riculum. Additionally, East Lake isrecruiting technology-minded mid-dle school students to learn in thisstate-of-the-art engineering lab be-ginning in the 2014-15 school year.

The key to helping clients deal withtoday’s economy and prepare forthe future…education.

Knowledge is power! With anuncertain economy in our future, many retirees and baby boomers areconcerned about whether their pen-sions and retirement savings will lastthe rest of their lives. Whether you arealready retired, or within five to tenyears of retiring, you need to knowhow to protect your money and un-derstand how tax laws will affect yourretirement. In addition, there areoften legitimate adjustments that canbe made now to reduce tax liabilitiesof which many people are unaware. With roughly 10,000 Baby Boomersturning 65 today and about 10,000more will cross that threshold everyday for the next 19 years, many arelooking for the answers on when thebest age is to take social security, thethresholds of when social security istaxed and how to not outlive their re-tirement assets. “If clients are alreadycollecting social security when theycome to us they want to know howthey can reduce or eliminate taxes onnot only social security income, buttheir overall taxes as well,” says EdRizzotto. “We spend many hourswith our clients to put sound plans inplace by sharing ‘real time’ tax, in-come and social security analysisthrough some of the most sophisti-cated software. “We want our clientsto leave our office with a better under-standing on what their income needswill be in retirement, and how to con-trol, reduce or possibly eliminatetaxes.”

Concierge Level ServiceWhile taxes are a large part of The

Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group, themajority of their clients also utilize thefirm’s other services including invest-ments, retirement planning, long termcare, annuities, life insurance, wills andtrusts. Clients have access to expertsin the fields of taxes, finance, insur-ance, and the services of elder law at-torneys who handle wills, trusts andoverall estate planning. Ed says,“Clients like the opportunity we pro-vide to get everything taken care of inone place.”

“When people come in to seeus,” says Ed, “the first thing we do isdedicate an hour or of our time tocomplete an overall review that coversthe last couple of years, includinggoing over their tax returns in detail, studying their portfolios, and dis-cussing their important concerns todetermine how we can help them. Then, at a follow-up appointment, wepresent a thorough plan for them.”

The Rizzotto Tax AdvisoryGroup offers guidance to each in-vestor based on their unique invest-ment profile while focusing on theirfinancial goals. “Many people areconcerned with the economy rightnow and preservation of funds is veryimportant,” says Ed. “Saving ontaxes, reducing or eliminating taxationon social security and protecting thefinancial wellbeing of a spouse afteranother’s death – those are things thatmy clients are concerned about.Today, people also want alternatives tothe low interest rate environment pro-vided by CDs and money market ac-counts. Those clients looking forsomething more tangible to invest inare turning to us for precious metalsand other conservative investment ve-hicles of which they may have beenpreviously unaware.”

Rizzotto explains that being in-volved with his clients in all the keyareas of tax returns, insurance needs

and investments allows his team tokeep a keen eye on each client’s bot-tom line. “We’ve had people who hadother advisors and financial plannerswho convinced them to makechanges, not aware of the tax im-pacts,” says Ed. “To me the tax re-turn is the most important documentthe client owns, that’s why it is thefirst thing we look at when the clientmeets us for their initial appointment. If there is an investment or changethat could cause a taxable event – weknow that up front.”

Retirement Planning…Not Just ForRetirees

While The Rizzotto Tax AdvisoryGroup’s area of expertise over theyears has been working with retireeswe also work with clients of all ages inthe area of retirement planning.“You’re never too young or too old tostart saving for retirement,” says Riz-zotto. We have found that many peo-ple we meet that are still working havechanged jobs about every five to sevenyears, and many of those people lefttheir retirement plans at their old em-ployers (i.e. 401k, 403b, and 457plans, etc). Many of these plans canbe rolled over to individual IRAs orRoth IRAs, thus giving the clientmore control and the ability to havesomeone to advise them. We feel it isalso imperative for those people ages59 -1/2 or older who are still em-ployed to become educated on a verysignificant act signed into law by con-gress over seven years ago thatchanged the rules governing IRAs,401(k)s, 403(b)s and 457 plans, whattheir options are and what they can doto prepare for their family’s financialfuture.

advanced cardiac care – includingopen heart surgery – right in yourown community. Not only was Med-ical Center of Trinity built to exceedstate-of-the-art standards, every roomis private and every need of patientsand their families has been anticipatedand provided for.

Fast response time was a hot topicaround the table with members of theCardiovascular Team at Medical Cen-ter of Trinity. These folks know thatwhen it comes to heart attacks, everysecond saved means more heart mus-cle saved and a better outcome for thepatient. In meeting with these dedi-cated healthcare professionals, onepoint was driven home over and over– everyone needs to recognize thesymptoms of heart attack and act im-mediately, not hesitating to call 911!Leela Beers, MBA and Director ofBusiness Development, CardiovascularServices, advised, “People having chestpain tend to deny that it could bemore, but you shouldn’t hesitate tocall 911. It’s better to be wrong thanlong – we are shaving off seconds, notjust minutes. Patients with heart attack

symptoms need a highly experiencedteam including very experiencedphysicians. We have that here. We alsohave dedicated leaders and the supportthat we need. Medical Center of Trin-ity invested $3,000,000 in additionalopen heart equipment. We have thisnew service to keep our community inour community.”

While open heart is new to thebuilding, it is not new to the Cardio-vascular Team involved, which has fourMedical Directors including: MarshallDeSantis, MD Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Medical Director of Open HeartSurgery; Najam Javeed, MD Interven-

tional Cardiology, the Medical Directorof the Cardiac Catheterization Lab;Sudhir Agarwal, MD InterventionalCardiology, the Medical Director of theChest Pain Center and Carlos Bayron,MD Interventional Cardiology, theMedical Director of the STEMI Com-mittee. In addition to the four MedicalDirectors and the aforementionedLeela Beers and Janet Baile, the Car-diovascular Team includes: Administra-tive Director of Surgical Services LisaRichardson, MHA, RN, CNOR; Di-rector of Cardiac CatheterizationBobbi Altman, RN-BC, BS, RCIS; Di-rector of Emergency Services JenniferHatch, RN; Director of ICU/CVICUPatricia Plue, RN, MSN, MHA,CCRN; and Director of CVCU LizetteOtero, RN, BSN.

Medical Director of Open HeartSurgery, Dr. DeSantis comes to Med-ical Center of Trinity from RegionalMedical Center Bayonet Point wherethe first open heart procedure at thehospital was performed in November1989. Dr. DeSantis, who has per-formed more than 4,000 Open Heartsurgeries, says, “This is going to be agreat addition for patients and theirfamilies in Southern Pasco and North-ern Pinellas.”

Dr. Bayron says, “The collabora-tion by community, administration, physicians and everyone involved hasset us on the path to offer a qualityopen heart surgery program to ourcommunity.” And Dr. Javeed adds, “Iknow it will be a high quality programand serve our community just right.”

Dr. Agarwal took a lot of time toexplain the process that Medical Cen-ter of Trinity is going through to be-come an accredited Chest Pain Centerby the Society of Cardiovascular Pa-tient Care (SCPC). “The criteria isvery strict,” he explained. “There areeight key elements that must be metand in order to maintain accreditationfrom the SCPC, every hospital has togo through the accreditation processevery three years.”

Every team member has workeddiligently to make sure every facet ofcardiac care merges seamlessly, know-ing that faster response times savelives. Patients arriving with chest painare seen immediately and every case isreviewed to make sure that every sec-ond is utilized, giving patients the bestpossible shot at a great outcome – astrong, healthy heart.

“We can have a team ready in theER within minutes once we know we

are getting a patient with a heart at-tack,” explained Dr. Agarwal. “EMSactually sends us the EKG while theambulance is still in motion becauseevery minute counts. If a patientcomes in with chest pain, they are pri-ority number one. That applies, whether that patient walks in the ERor comes by ambulance.” The differ-ence is - besides the obvious that EMSpersonnel are qualified and have life-saving equipment – if you call 911, theEMS crew will also be able to performan EKG that can be immediatelytransmitted to the hospital allowingthem to be ready for you prior to yourarrival and giving them vital informa-

tion during transport. Dr Agarwalsays, “That is why it is an importantpart of our community education toteach people to recognize the signsand symptoms of a heart attack sothey will call 911.”Excellence is what the CardiovascularTeam has come to expect, with theSTEMI Team at Medical Center ofTrinity exceeding national standards. The STEMI Team responds to pa-tients exhibiting symptoms of segmentelevation myocardial infarction(STEMI) or more simply put, heartattack. Medical Center of Trinity isproud of its response times and out-comes for patients needing life-saving

stents to open blocked vessels in theheart, and rightly so. Nancy Maysilles,Chief Nursing Officer at Medical Cen-ter, states, “If a person lives in this areaand they are having chest pain, this isthe hospital to come to. The ER iscompletely capable and there are a lotof elements to consider. Pasco CountyEMS is wonderful and has electroniccommunication directly with us fromthe field. Once we get a patient in theER, it is a matter of minutes beforethey are in the cath lab [whenneeded].”

The STEMI Team at MedicalCenter of Trinity not only boasts ex-cellent response times, but also goodoutcomes for cardiac care patients. Dr.Agarwal explains, “When a patientcomes in with chest pain, basically thegoal is to open the blood vessels asquickly as possible. The national aver-age [from intake to Stent procedure]is within 90 minutes, but we are doingvery well here, averaging less than 60minutes from the time the patient en-ters the ER. We are one of the best inthe area.”

To have a stellar program, educa-tion is a key component. Director ofEducation, Janet Baile, elaborates,“We have cardiologists, cardiovascularsurgeons and cardiac anesthesiologiststeaching our nurses, and all of ourRNs are trained according to the goldstandard of the American Heart Asso-ciation (AHA) and the Society of Tho-racic Surgeons. Medical Center ofTrinity is actually a training center forthe AHA, which is difficult to achieveand something we are very proud of.”Director of Cardiac CatheterizationBobbi Altman says, “A lot of our RNsare nationally certified in their spe-cialty and our doctors [in the heartprogram] are Board Certified in Car-diology and Board Certified in Inter-ventional Cardiology, which is anadvanced certification.”

In going forward with offeringadvanced cardiac services, Medical

Center of Trinity’s goal is to meet thehighest standards in and out of the op-erating room, from the nursing andsurgical staff, to the way patients aretreated after surgery through cardiacrehabilitation.

Cardiac procedures currently of-fered at Medical Center of Trinity areopen heart surgeries (targeted to startmid-February) including coronary ar-tery bypass and valve repair or replace-ment, vascular services, minimallyinvasive cardiac catheterization and di-agnostic testing.

The future of Medical Center ofTrinity will no doubt offer even moreadvanced medical services. MarketingDirector Mary Sommise says, “Ourgoal is to keep adding programs andservices that will allow the residents ofthis area to stay close to their familiesand friends while receiving advancedmedical care right here in the commu-nity.”

Community education is anotherimportant service provided by MedicalCenter of Trinity, which continuallyoffers educational seminars on a vari-ety of health topics including hearthealth.

For American Heart Month, sev-eral educational seminars are offered. All presentations are at 12 p.m. at theMedical Center of Trinity. A lightlunch will be served. Reservations arerequired and can be made at 727-834-5630. On Feb. 19, “Heart andSoul” will be presented by Carlos Bay-ron, MD Interventional Cardiology, who will discuss recent scientific find-ings are linking music to hearts andheart health. In fact, the beat of yourheart may be more closely connectedto musical beats than you know. OnFeb. 27, “I’m Having A Heart At-tack; Now What?” will be presentedy Rias Ali, MD Interventional Cardiol-ogy. Participants will learn that not allheart attacks have shooting pain downyour left arm.
