“Umbrellas for Peace”Created a Colorful Display of Togetherness in Tampa

The kickoff to Big Brothers Big Sisters ofTampa Bay’s new awareness and recruitment cam-paign was a great success. Nearly 200 volunteermentors, parents, and children attended “Umbrellasfor Peace” on Sunday, July 14, at the Glazer Chil-dren’s Museum, 110 W Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa.

Bigs (volunteer mentors) and Littles (children)spent time discussing their thoughts about peaceand helping the community, while painting umbrel-las with messages of hope at the museum. Guidedby stilt walkers from Busch Gardens, they thenshowcased their masterpieces during a colorful pa-rade around Curtis Hixon Park. The parade culmi-nated in the group forming a heart shape in themiddle of the park. The “heart” is part of the BigBrothers Big Sisters logo. (See photos.)

Umbrellas for Peace started out as art therapyfor people affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, terroristattacks and has since blossomed into a global peaceinitiative. More than 2-million people from 29countries have participated in artist Matt Lamb’s“Umbrellas for Peace” concept. Sunday was be thefirst time the event was held in Tampa.

When initially presented with the idea, StephenKoch, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sis-ters of Tampa Bay, Inc., felt it was a perfect tie-in

The electromagnetic sensors in thecatheters guide the physician to the tar-geted lesion. Once there, the guidecatheter is removed and the extendedworking channel catheter remains. Biopsytools are then placed through the work-ing catheter to obtain tissue samples fortesting and diagnosis. Upon completionof the procedure, the patient goes to re-covery and, in the vast majority of cases, discharged home.

“Bringing this technology to ourcommunity is a huge step forward,” said

Lawrence Hochman, DO, FACRO (Fel-low of the American College of RadiationOncologists), “This gives our patients ac-cess to diagnostic and treatment optionson par with university centers.

“We are proud to offer this technol-ogy to the community which further en-hances our Accredited Cancer Programby the Commission on Cancer,” saidLeigh Massengill, CEO of Medical Cen-ter of Trinity. “News that a spot (lesion),deep in your lung, has been found and alung biopsy needs to be performed raisesmany concerns and emotions. Medical Center of Trinity An-nounces Major Advancement in theTreatment of Lung Cancer

Medical Center of Trinity an-nounced a major addition to its cancertreatment arsenal. and is now utilizingElectromagnetic Navigation Bron-choscopy® (ENB) ™ to access and biopsylesions deep in the lung. The superDi-mension® i-Logic™ System is a minimallyinvasive option for patients who havebeen identified as having a small or hard-to-reach lesion on their lung that is inac-cessible through traditionalbronchoscope. The ENB procedure com-bines GPS-like technology with acatheter-based system that uses the pa-tient’s natural airways to reach these par-ticular masses.

ENB is typically an outpatient pro-

cedure and minimizes the need for moreinvasive surgical procedures to assess le-sions in the distant regions of the lung, where more than two-thirds of all cancersare found. This new procedure minimizesthe need for more conventional assess-ments, such as thorascopic or percuta-neous needle biopsy, which may requirean inpatient stay and can cause complica-tions such as a collapsed lung.

This procedure may be used whenan abnormal finding in a distant part ofthe lung has been found on an x-ray, CTscan or PET-CT scan that may be causedby infection, inflammation or cancer.Small lesions in the outer area of the lungare difficult to reach for diagnosis andtreatment. “Traditional bronchoscopy fre-quently fails to reach the outer areas of thelungs often leading to more invasive surgi-cal options for diagnosis,” says Dr.Nagesh Salian, pulmonologist. The Elec-tromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy®will allow a physician to locate, test, diag-nose, and potentially treat the one legioneven in the outer areas of the lungs,” headded.

How does it work? After a lesion hasbeen detected through CT, the patient’sscan is loaded into planning software thatcreates a 3D roadmap of the lungs. Abronchoscope is placed through the pa-

By Julie Kanehl

It’s 5:30 in the morning, and I’mup before the sun to go and try thisboot camp that everyone’s been ravingabout for years, and I’m thinking, itcan’t be that good. Well, spoiler alert:I LOVED IT. Not only did I get anamazing workout; I met a lot of greatpeople and most importantly had agreat time – all before most peopleeven started their day.

I’ve never been one of those whocan’t wait to get to the gym, or to geta few miles under their belt. I don’trun for fun! I need some motivation!Well, if you want some help with mo-tivation or are bored with the same-old routine and want a challengingworkout that changes every day; thenyou should definitely try the NorthPinellas Adventure Boot Camp forWomen. Trust me, women don’t getup this early for nothing. It has to beamazing, awesome and worth it – andit is.

While doing a few warm-up lapsaround the car loop of Brooker CreekElementary School before dawn, I

asked the other women what madethis boot camp so special, and the an-swer was always John’s high energy, motivational approach. I noticed thatthere were women there of all fitnesslevels, ages and races simply focusingon themselves for a few minutes; get-ting fresh air, moving their bodies, andbeing physically productive for them-selves. Let’s face it, most women puteveryone else first. I could tell that thistime was special to them. I realizedthat this hour was going to be specialto me as well, and it was.

It also helps that the Owner,Coach, and Fitness Trainer Extraordi-naire, John Kent, is high energy, highly personable, and sincerely inter-ested in helping his campers becomebetter versions of themselves. John re-ally knows his stuff, and he takes thetime to make sure that each and everywoman who attends his boot camp isworking out safely and effectively atthe pace that is right for them.

He says, “When women are upand moving and having fun, it takesthe work part out of the workout.”

John has more than 10 years of

experience as a personal trainer, andafter seeing a similar program inSouthern California, he decided to tryhis hand at beginning one here. Octo-ber will mark the six-year anniversaryof North Pinellas Adventure BootCamp, made successful because fornearly six years, the women of EastLake have been sharing their successand telling their friends about it. Andwhile a lot of women sign up for onesession, most come back for more, andsome haven’t missed a session yet!

Yes, Boot Camp is forEvery Woman!

Don’t think bootcamp is for you? Youwould be surprised! Howdo I know? Well, because Iwas surprised! I am so gladthat I had the chance togo out there and trysomething that was a bitout of my comfort zone, but the truth is, the hard-

est part was going. Once Iwas there – it was amazing!I was energized, motivated,

and I caught myself smiling andlaughing throughout the hour. I can’tremember the last time I did that at5:30 in the morning, but I can tell youthat it almost never happens at thegym. Boot camp was challenging, yes, which I expected, but it was fun too,and that I hadn’t expected.

20 Days to a New You! That’s a pretty big deal! John’s

program promises no gimmicks andreal results ranging from integratingsimple eating habits into your lifestyle

to workout techniques that work foryour body. For one hour a day, fivedays a week for four weeks, womenget more than a great workout; theygain confidence and even hope. Infact, it’s a very liberating thing to getaway from the monotony of the gymand to be with a group of women out-side. It’s not a competitive spirit, but afeeling of camaraderie that energizesyou.

Every day is different at bootcamp, and you never know what you’llbe doing next, but that’s part of thefun! A typical hour will include cardio,mat-work, some weight training, bal-ance training, core work, interval

training, walking, running, sprintingand more. Johneven uses games, obstacles andgroup activities tokeep you moving. It’s hard to giveup when yourteammates arewaiting on you!

One campersaid, “I have triedother things, but Ialways end upcoming back. No

one motivates me like John.” He ishard to ignore, what with his bull-horn, his high-energy music, and thequick pace of the program. Every five-six minutes you’re doing somethingtotally different, and the fun part is,you’re never sure what it’s going tobe! One thing’s for sure, you’re goingto feel the workout, and feel goodabout the workout.

Julie Wooten, who attends regu-larly, said, “At Boot Camp, thewomen encourage one another. We’reeach other’s biggest cheerleaders. I’vemet the best people. John sets a posi-tive upbeat tone and is always intro-

ducing new exercises.Every day is a greatday at Boot Camp.”

Make Time for You! Is 5:30 a.m. too

early? You should tryit! Still too early? There’s a 9 a.m. bootcamp as well that isheld at beautiful John Chestnut Park.No matter which time you come, don’t let anything get in the way of ahealthier you. You have one life, onebody, and one chance to use it or loseit. It’s never too late to turn it around,to make a change, to have the life youwant to have. Saturday, October 19, at the Car-illon Parkway/Catalina MarketingField the 4th annual Tampa Bay Walksfor Talk to benefit children withChildhood Apraxia of Speech will beheld. The event is a family-fun filledday including a walk, lunch, andgames for kids. On-site registrationand check-in begins at 10 a.m., andthe walk begins promptly at 11:15a.m. There is a family meet and greetafter the walk at 2 p.m.

Proceeds from the walk will bene-fit CASANA’s (The ChildhoodApraxia of Speech Association ofNorth America) apraxia programs andresearch. CASANA is a source of in-

spiration and instrumental inhelping many families and pro-fessionals gain the knowledgein apraxia needed to move chil-dren with Childhood Apraxiaof Speech (CAS) to developmeaningful speech. For many

families it is the first place they look tofor support after their child is diag-nosed.

According to CASANA Child-hood Apraxia of Speech is a motorspeech disorder that first becomes ap-parent as a young child is learningspeech. For reasons not yet fully un-derstood, children with apraxia ofspeech have great difficulty planningand producing the precise, highly re-fined and specific series of movementsof the tongue, lips, jaw and palate thatare necessary for intelligible speech.Apraxia of speech is sometimes knownas verbal apraxia, developmentalapraxia of speech, or verbal dyspraxia. The most important concept is theroot word “praxis.” Praxis means

planned movement. To some degreeor another, a child with the diagnosisof apraxia of speech has difficulty pro-gramming and planning speech move-ments. Apraxia of speech is a specificspeech disorder. This difficulty in plan-ning speech movements is the missingkey of childhood apraxia of speech. The challenge and difficulty that chil-dren with apraxia have in creat-ing speech can be confusing toparents, especially when theyobserve the skill of learningto speak developing, seem-ingly without effort, in otherchildren.

Brenae Solis, the walkcoordinator for Tampa Bay,turned to CASANA when herdaughter Emily was diagnosedwith apraxia at 22 months old.Brenae explains, “There wasnowhere to go to in Florida forsupport at the time.CASANA is the nationalapraxia not-for-profit

organization that is run out of Pitts-burg. They helped me create a walkand support group here in Florida. The proceeds of our Tampa walk goto CASANA.”

CASANA’s mission is tostrengthen the support systems in thelives of children with apraxia so thateach child is afforded their best oppor-tunity to develop to their full poten-tial. CASANA is a 501(c)3 publiccharity and is the only national non-profit organization dedicated exclu-sively to the needs of children withapraxia of speech. With the help offundraisers like the 4th annual TampaBay Walks for Talk, CASANA is ableto provide multimedia information onCAS to families, professionals, policy-makers and other members of thepublic, provide network and partner-

ship opportunities for par-ents and professionals tobenefit children with CAS,facilitate better public pol-icy and services for childrenaffected by the disorder, create training and educa-tional opportunities forfamilies and professionals, and support apraxia re-search, especially researchwhich identifies effectivetreatment and therapy forchildren with apraxia. In addition to raising fundsfor apraxia, the walk is agreat way for families to

connect, raise awareness of the disor-der, and celebrate children withapraxia. The day will include food, fun, crafts, games, entertainment andmusic for the kids. If you register achild with apraxia of speech make sureyou contact Justin LeWinter [email protected] by October 9with the child’s first and last name, child’s age, and your Walk name too. There is a special gift to present toeach child on the day of the Walk incelebration of the children everyonewill be there to support. Also be sureto register for the walk by Sunday,

September 22 to receive an officialApraxia Walk t-shirt in your size.Jen Alfieri has a team walking for herson. Jen had never heard of apraxiabefore her third child, Caleb, was di-agnosed at 33 months. Jen explains,“I knew something was wrong whenhe still wasn’t talking at two-and-a-half. I went to our pediatrician first, and then we went to Early Steps sev-eral times before we went to FDLRS(Florida Diagnostic and Learning Re-source System). It was very frustrat-

ing because we were told so many dif-ferent things before we got his diag-nosis. He now receives supportthrough the TALK Program in theschool system and private therapy. He’s making great gains with thecombination of the two. The otherday he strung three words together.Every child is different. For most chil-dren speech works itself out, butCaleb was one of 1,000 that it didn’t.I encourage moms to trust your in-stinct if you think something inwrong. Early intervention is critical.”

Join a great cause, Saturday,October 19, and have a fun day atCarillon Parkway/Catalina Market-ing Field, 120 Carillon Parkway, inSt. Petersburg. Adult walkers are$20, and children under 18 are$10. For more information aboutthe walk, or to donate to the walk, visit www.apraxia-kids.org.

Often, homeowners focuson updating the rugs and furnishings, but settle with keeping the same basiccabinet knobs and plain mouldingsthat were there the day they moved in.There is no better way to truly setyour home apart than by customizingit with beautiful hardware and custommoldings.

Capital Millwork co-owners BobKoch and Keith Sontag are local ex-perts who would love to show youhow, just as new pillows and acces-sories are an inexpensive way tobreathe new life into a room, new cab-inet hardware is an inexpensive way togive your kitchen or bathroom a rich, custom look. You’ll find far more thanhardware at Capital Millwork, which is

your local source for all types of cus-tom mouldings, stair parts, replace-ment doors and windows and evenbeautiful hardwood flooring. Why set-tle for what you can find at “big boxstores” when Capital Millwork cangive you so many more choices? And ifyou have a hard time visualizing whatdifferent door styles will look like, don’t fret, Capital Millwork has a “vir-tual designer” computer programwhere with a photo of the front ofyour home, you can literally try outdifferent styles.

Located in Palm Harbor at thecorner of U.S. 19 North and TampaRoad in the Palm Lake Plaza, CapitalMillwork was born five years agowhen Bob Koch, in the industry since1986, became frustrated about nothaving a knowledgeable source forhigh quality, unique products such asdecorative hardware, architecturalhardware and truly custom millwork. Not willing to make his clients settlefor whatever was available at the home

supply stores, he opened Capital Mill-work.

While it is very convenient to itsEast Lake customers, the great selec-tion, competitive prices and truly cus-tom millwork brings in customersfrom afar. Capital Millwork has ex-panded its showroom, adding an addi-tional 2,100 square feet that will allowfor the display of some of the manycustom windows and doors that areavailable through Capital Millwork.

and it’s affecting our families, which iswhy nutrition is something that all ofthe doctors and staff at The PediatricSpecialists Medical Group are passion-ate about. Drs. Hasell and Pham havereceived additional training in nutritionso they can help their patients achievethe highest standards in nutrition.

“We train together, which makesus very consistent in how we practice,”says Dr. Hasell. “We’re more of a fam-ily, we have one location, and we get toknow our families.”

Dr. Pham adds, “We take a morepersonal approach. One of our biggestpassions is to inspire parents and fami-lies to be in charge of their health tobecome fit and healthy as a whole –body, mind and spirit.”

From Newborn Colic to CollegeColds

Whether you’re up in the middleof the night with your toddler whohas a fever, or your teenager has theflu, the doctors at The Pediatric Spe-cialists Medical Group are ready. From their focus on the importanceof breastfeeding and healthy eating, tocommon colds, to menstruation andhormones, they’ve got you covered.

Their focus is on consistent, per-sonal attention for their patients. From newborns to young adults, no

matter how complex the medicalpoblem, they are there to both com-fort and advise.

For parents who are expecting,it’s popular to come in and meet yourpediatrician and to form a relation-ship, because you don’t want to waituntil a baby is sick and fussy to decidewhom to see. Dr. Hasell says, “Weencourage people to come in andmeet us.”

Dr. Hasell says, “We are on staffat Mease Countryside Hospital, TheMedical Center of Trinity, and FloridaHospital North Pinellas, which usedto be Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital, and we are on the Affiliate Staff at AllChildren’s. We enjoy going to thehospital to meet the babies who willbe coming to our practice. “

As kids grow, it’s important thatthey get used to seeing a doctor regu-larly, especially for well visits, becauseit gives them a chance to ask ques-tions of their doctor that they mightnot ask their parents. This is especiallyimportant in the teen years.

Dr. Hasell says, “We see a lot ofpatients with upper respiratory tractinfections, ear infections, stomachviruses. We also help children withspecial needs, and we diagnose andtreat ADD and ADHD.”

Dr. Pham says, “We see a lot of

adolescents. It’s good that they getused to going to a checkup every year, because it teaches them to put the re-sponsibility of their health into theirhands. If they get used to going whenthey’re well, they’ll feel comfortabletalking to a doctor that they trustwhen they have a problem.”

They see it all at The PediatricSpecialists Medical Group, making iteasy for parents to know that they arein good hands, with experiencedmedical professionals. In fact, for thepast 16 years, Dr. Hasell has been theMedical Director for the Pasco ChildProtection Team, helping to diagnoseand treat children who may have beenabused. Dr. Hasell is also a TrinityRotary Club member, which he sayshe enjoys because all of the fundsraised go towards children’s charities.

Hahnemann University Program inNeurosurgery in 1994, and passed theAmerican Board of Neurological Sur-gery with the distinct honor of AlphaOmega Alpha. Dr. Giannakopouloshas been both the Chief of Staff andThe Chairman of Surgery at bothRegional Medical Center BayonetPoint and at the former CommunityHospital in New Port Richey.

While Dr. Giannakopoulos isknown for everything from successfulspine surgeries to removing brain tu-mors, I know Dr. Giannakopoulos asmy doctor. After getting into a car ac-cident in 2009, and having a terriblereaction to an epidural steroid injec-tion given to me by another doctor,Dr. Giannakopoulos was the firstphysician to really sit down with meand look at all of my films. Dr. Gian-nakopoulos ordered his own film, andwas able to properly diagnose my backand neck problems. Since then, he hasbeen a great support to me. I can hon-estly recommend him personally toeveryone I meet. He is knowledge-able, experienced, kind and profes-sional.

While Dr. Giannakopoulos is akeenly skilled surgeon, he prefers toprovide conservative treatment op-tions where possible. Unlike otherdoctors who are quick to provide pre-scription pain pills, Dr. Giannakopou-los and his staff shy away from doingso. Instead they focus on providingsafe and conservative techniques likebracing, physical therapy and interven-tional pain treatments like FacetBlocks, Epidural Injections and Ra-diofrequent Nerve Ablations.

When the conservative approachis no longer working, Dr. Gian-nakopoulos is the person to turn to forsurgery. He has more hours in theO.R. than many of the other neuro-surgeons in the state, and he has alsotrained extensively in microscopic sur-geries. In fact, all of his procedures areperformed using microscopic technol-ogy. Dr. Giannakopoulos can performevery kind of spinal surgery from min-imally invasive surgeries, to surgeriessuch as Laminectomies, Lamino-tomies, Foraminotomies, Microdiscec-tomies and brain surgeries.

One of Dr. Giannakopoulos’s pa-tients said, “I have been seeing theDoctor for seven years now. He haskept me out of pain. Last week he per-

formed a laminectomy on L4/5 and itwent perfectly. I highly recommendDr. Giannakopoulos.”

Dr. Giannakopoulos also special-izes in treating Lumbar Spinal Steno-sis, which is a narrowing of the spinethat is caused by the natural wear andtear that our spines experience in ourlifetimes. In fact, he believes that thisis the #1 spine problem that faces theelderly. Spinal Stenosis causes pain anda problem straightening the spine, leading to a bending over or a haunch.Unfortunately many elderly folks think

that this is just a part of aging thatthey have to learn to live with, butthat’s not necessarily the case.

“My focus is to help prevent pa-tients from becoming paralyzed,” saysDr. Giannakopoulos. “If a patient whoused to be able to walk two miles can’tget around the grocery store withoutpain, I can help them. The philosophyof the Neurosurgeon is to restorefunction and to preserve neurologicalfunctions. What happens in the case ofsevere Spinal Stenosis is that some-thing is encroaching on the spinal

canal, and to cure the problem, youreally need to operate. This kind ofsurgery is safe and provides between85% and 90% relief of symptoms, andthe recovery is generally very quick.”

One of Dr. Giannakopoulos’s pa-tients wrote, “My mother has hadthree cervical surgeries and is headingfor her first lumbar surgery thisweek…The staff is always very caringand take care of my questions andFMLA paperwork in record time. They have offered assurances that allwill be taken care of and it was done asstated. They even coordinated homenursing care for my mom since I can’tbe there for the full six weeks of recov-ery. When she told me she needed thelumbar surgery, I wanted to make sureDr. G was the only doctor to haveanything to do with her surgery andhe is. I’m very happy to know that Dr.G is so thorough and as skilled as he

is. Mom’s recovery has always beenweeks less than predicted and she is inher early 60s. Patience is a virtue andhis staff is nothing but.”

Whether you are having lowerback pain, neck pain, suffering fromSpinal Stenosis, or are having numb-ness or weakness in your extremities,Dr. Giannakopoulos and his staff canhelp get you back on your feet again. Iknow because he really helped me.

crusty. My favorite dish is the PenneAlla Vodka. The sauce is so yummy. The house wines are great and reason-ably priced. Owner Jiske Ong greetsyou at the door and she's very warmand welcoming. Try Positano’s onceand you'll keep going back.”

The dinner menu features amazingappetizers like Clams Marechiara –baby clams sautéed in garlic, fresh basiland white wine, with a touch of mari-nara – and lightly fried Calamari tossedin a sweet and spicy cherry peppersauce. They also have Antipasti plates,Bruschetta, and Fiocchi – pasta pursesfilled with a blend of four cheeses andpears, topped with a prosciutto andbasil, served in a rosemary butter sauce.

The house and Caesar salads atPositano’s are a perfect start to yourmeal. The house salad has homemadebalsamic vinaigrette tossed with a freshspring mix, toasted almond slivers, dried cranberries, and a sprinkling offeta. The Caesar has just the right com-bination of romaine lettuce, garlic crou-tons, and shaved Parmesan with a richCaesar dressing.

As for your meal, you have a hard

decision ahead of you – do you go withone of the authentic Neapolitan stylewood-fired pizzas or one of their meatspecialties, such as their veal, chicken orseafood; or do you choose one of thefabulous pasta dishes, with their delec-table made-from-scratch sauces?

Harry and Jiske remodeled Posi-tano’s with the goal of creating mouth-watering pizzas, and Harry is usuallythe one manning the 800 degreewood-fired oven, so you know yourpizza will be great. Whether you wantto go with a classic Margherita, a savoryPuttanesca, or one of their hearty meator fresh vegetarian pizzas, you’re taste

buds are sure to be tickled. But then again, their veal dishes

are also a top seller at Positano’s, somaybe one of those would appeaseyour appetite. Harry says the Piccataand Saltimbocca are customer favorites. On our last visit we tried the Veal Posi-tano – veal sautéed and baked withfresh spinach, tomatoes, and fresh moz-zarella in a white wine prosciutto saucewith an added touch of marinara. Theflavors in this entrée were a divine com-bination.

Positano’s features an extensivemenu complete with plenty of seafooddishes to tempt you, such as the Shrimp

Sophia – jumbo shrimp sautéed in gar-lic and white wine with Kalamata olives,sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh basil, andthen topped with crumbled feta. All theflavors combined together perfectly, and while I didn’t think I’d be able tofinish it, it was so yummy I couldn’tleave even one bite behind.

Harry also says the pork chop withsausage stuffing and a sauce of garlic, mushrooms, and sherry is a big favoriteamong Positano’s regulars, as are themany traditional pasta dishes they serve, like Fettuccine Alfredo, Penne AllaVodka, Gnocchi Bolognese and Egg-plant Parmigiana.
