From The Editor Kim Thomas

Thanks to our readers and our ad-vertisers we have enjoyed tremendousgrowth here at Neighborhood News& Lifestyles and along with thatgrowth have come upgrades to ourwebsite and email system. We cherishthe emails and letters we receive fromreaders and depend upon the informa-tion we receive to keep our news briefsinteresting and the community calen-dar up-to-date. With four publica-tions, each with two email addresses –one for ads and one for editorial con-tent – we decided to simplify thingsfor ourselves and our readers and ad-vertisers. Plus a recent problem withYahoo underscored the need for achange. However, that problem didwarm our hearts because of the greatoutpouring of support and concernthat came from advertisers.

We’d like to share what happenedsimply to warn others about possibleemail hacking. Our General ManagerJim O’Reilly has a great relationshipwith our advertisers, many of whomhe has worked with for about eightyears, and when his email account was

hacked and an email went out to hisentire address book indicating that hewas stuck in a foreign country and hispersonal effects and travel documentshad been stolen, including his passportand identification, and that he neededassistance. It looked like it was sentfrom him but it was not. This emailwas sent out at 5:42 a.m. I saw itwhen I first woke up and at firstthought that Jim was playing a joke onme, but when I saw the time it wassent I knew better. Even with his greatsense of humor, I knew he wouldn’tbe playing any jokes that early!

I called Jim around 7 a.m. to lethim know and he had already receivednumerous emails from concernedclients offering to help him. Jim could-n’t believe how many people reachedout to him. This really drove home acouple of points to us. First, we have afantastic, caring community and clien-tele. And, second, we needed to im-plement a more securecommunication.

If this ever happens to you, thefirst thing to do is change your pass-word. To keep your account safe, it isrecommended to change your pass-

word every couple of months.

Concerned East Lake ResidentWarns About Interfering withWildlife

Last month we shared BarbSchultz’s story of the wildlife rescue ofa fawn that was seemingly abandoned

in her backyard. We urge residents tonever handle an abandoned animalsuch as a fawn because it may causethe mother to reject it. Instead, if everfaced with a possible wildlife rescuesituation, please call on local animalrescue experts for advice.

After the August issue of Neigh-borhood News & Lifestyles delivered toresidents in East Lake, we received anemail from East Lake residents Gregand Chris Owens, who were con-cerned that after reading the articlepeople may act too hastily in trying tosave wildlife when it may not be neces-sary. Mrs. Schultz didn’t interfere withthe fawn herself, but rather called TheSuncoast Animal League to get in-structions on what to do. The fawnwas alone for a minimum of 10 hoursand rescuers felt that it was in dangerof dehydration.

Though we trust that Mrs.Schultz and the Suncoast AnimalLeague made the right decision, afterreading Mr. Owens’ email, we felt itimportant to reiterate the importance

of not interfering with wildlife andleaving rescue to experts.

Mr. and Mrs. Owens live in Cres-cent Oaks with property that backs upto a conservation area. “We've ob-served the habits of deer for 18 years,”says Mr. Owens. “During last month’sheavy rains/flooding we encountereda similar situation, but which con-cluded with better results. We ob-served a doe with two of the smallestfawns we had ever seen (the size ofchihuhaua pups!).

“The doe and one fawn walkedthrough the yard, but the other snug-gled up against a tree trunk for protec-tion and stayed there for 12 hours! Ibabysat that little guy all day checkingevery half-hour. After about 6 hourswe did some research and learned thatthe does will leave the young in bur-rows for as long as 12 hours. We real-ized that the flooding had made theburrows in the woods unusable. Themother came back almost exactly at 10p.m. and collected her young one. Wecontinue to see them growing upquite frequently.” He warns, “I believethis fawn was unnecessarily taken fromher herd, and would appreciate if youwould advise folks not to be too hastywhen interfering with the wildlife.”

Haunted Fire House Mixes Funwith an Important Reminder

East Lake Fire Rescue will onceagain feature its Haunted Fire Houseas a community outreach program tohighlight the dangers of distracteddriving and is currently seeking volun-teers. The firefighters in the Depart-ment are holding this event for thesecond straight year, featuring the‘Don’t Text and Drive’ theme. “Theresponse from the 3,400 visitors in2011 was fantastic and this year’s2012 Haunted Fire House promisesto be even bigger and better,” saidEast Lake’s District Chief Bill Edling, the event’s chief architect.

East Lake’s Assistant Fire Chief,Tom May warns, “Recent statistics cer-tainly demonstrate the need for com-munity awareness of the dangers oftexting and driving. In 2010, over3,000 people were killed in crashes in-volving a distracted driver and over400,000 were injured. In the monthof June 2011 alone, more than 196billion text messages were sent or re-ceived in the United States, up nearly50% from June 2009, so the danger isincreasing.”

The East Lake Haunted FireHouse will be held on Friday and Sat-

Rather than throw them in thetrash, Tampa Bay local Kathi Stoy hasfound a way to turn annoying direct-mail political campaign ads into a wayto provide food to the homeless. Hercreative “NO B.S. Political Beads” arehelping to spread awareness and raisemoney for an important Tampa Baycharity.

One hundredpercent of the money raised from thesale of these necklaces, bracelets andearrings will go to Trinity Café, a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit, non-denomina-tional Tampa charity that serves mealsto the poor and homeless.

“If You Can’t Beat ‘em…Bead ‘em!”“Too much money is being spent

promoting politicians and not enoughmoney is going towards fixing realproblems. I want a little of the moneywasted on these flyers to help peoplein need,” says Stoy.

Pam Sica, also a Tampa Bay resi-dent, agrees, “I purchased a necklace

because I too am sick ofthese flyers cluttering mymailbox. Too much talk andnot enough action.”

NO B.S. Political Beadsare currently available at theSound Exchange locations inTampa (813-978-9316) andPinellas Park (727-545-0042). Prices are: Earrings($5), Bracelets ($5) andNecklace ($8); 100% of themoney raised will go to Trin-ity Café. Other local busi-nesses and individuals are encouragedto “Jump on the Beadwagon!”

For most children summer vaca-tion came to an end a few weeks agoand it’s time to ease back into theschool routine. As parents and chil-dren ready themselves for anotherschool year, it can cause some stressand anxiety. Making this year a greatacademic and social experience is justa matter of positive thinking, plan-ning ahead and adjustment of dailyroutines.

Eileen Kennedy-Moore, a clini-cal psychologist and coauthor ofSmart Parenting for Smart Kids:Nurturing Your Child’s True Poten-tial explains that it’s normal for achild to display some anxiety at thebeginning of the school year. Al-though the change of routine cancause students to have some troublesleeping, she explains that it is a nor-mal occurrence and parents shouldn’tbe too concerned. Parents play animportant role on how children viewthe oncoming school year. Kennedy-

Moore states that a parent’s attitudeis detrimental on how children reactto the new school year, as they caneasily pick up on their parents’ feel-ings and magnify them. Positive re-inforcement is extremely importantand although parents shouldn’t dis-miss their children’s anxiousness, they should make an effort not toblow them out of proportion. Sheexplains, “We don’t want to dismisstheir feelings, but we do want to nor-malize them and say ‘Everyone feelsa little nervous going into the class-room, but I really think you’re goingto be fine.’”

The article “Why Parent In-volvement Matters” written by thewebsite (schoolfamily.com) stressesthe importance of parent involve-ment. It explains that decades of re-search prove that children whoseparents are involved in their educa-tion perform better in and out ofschool. Some of the benefits includehigher test scores, better grades, bet-ter social skills and improved behav-ior.

Teacher Stephanie Drew ofAlabama encourages parents toask their children how their daywas, show interest in what they’velearned and help with theirhomework. “[Children] realizethat their education is importantand that it's important to theirfamilies also. They find value intheir education because their par-ents value it,” Drew explains. She adds that parent involvementalso lets the teacher know thatparents are willing to work withthem by keeping the communica-tion lines opened.

Doctor Michele Borba, par-enting and child expert, suggeststhat a proactive way to ease intothe school year is to set time asideto simply chat with your child. In-stead of trivializing his fear of newchanges, thank him for sharing hisconcerns. Suggesting age appropri-ate books such as First Day Jitters byJulie Danneberg can help open upthe dialogue.

Early school years are a greatlearning experience for children, notonly academically but also emotion-ally. With a positive attitude and reg-ular involvement, your child willencounter a successful and happyyear.

James "Arry" Housh has been ac-tively involved in the roofing companyfor thirty years. Alongside his wifeBecky Housh and with the help oftheir two sons Stephen and Matthew,he runs the reputable Arry's Roofing,a company dedicated to providingquality craftsmanship and exceptionalcustomer service. The Housh family'sdedication has enabled Arry's Roofingto expand their small, honorable andtrustworthy family-run business intothe well-known and trusted companyit is today; servicing residential, com-mercial and industrial projects withvalue and integrity.

I recently spoke to Matt regard-ing metal roofing and the benefits itprovides homeowners. Arry’s Roofingfully supports the advantages of metalroofing and is a specialist in metalroofing. Additionally, Arry’s in-housecustom sheet metal shop allows themetal roofing specialists to customizeyour roof to be an exact fit for yourhouse and your designs.

Matt says, “Metal roofing is more

of a craftsmanship and an art, similarto tile. In the early 2000s we saw theadvantages of metal roofing andstarted our metal roofing shop, trainedour guys specifically in metal roofingand began to create a reputation ofbeing metal roofing specialists.”

Metal Advantages:Metal roofing is known to be ini-

tially more expensive than other roof-ing types at first glance, but in thelong run metal roofing can save home-owners money due to its durability, energy efficiency and ability to increasethe resale value of your home.

Matt explains that the averagelifespan of a non-metal roof is seven-teen years; whereas metal roofing isproven to last 2-3 times longer withfewer repairs than other types of roof-ing materials. When installed by quali-fied and skilled metal roof specialists, metal roofing can last for longer than50 years with little maintenance. Mattadds that a metal roof is extremelybeneficial, especially in Florida, be-cause there is no other roof compositethat is as strong and as durable as a

metal roof, which if installed properlycan effectively withstand the harshFlorida winds and storms.

If you are a homeowner and areseeking out a way to reduce the priceof your energy bill and would like tobuild a roof with energy-saving mate-rial, Arry’s Roofing recommends youlook into getting a metal roof. Metalroofing is economically sustainable andbetter for the environment than manytraditional types of materials, such aspetroleum-based shingles. The instal-lation of reflective metal roofing cansave your home up to 40 percent incooling costs.

Arry's Roofing is proactive and

innovative, keeping up to date in theindustry by furthering their educationregularly. Matt says, “We use newproducts that are safe. By keeping ontop of what is offered, we are able tobring our customers cleaner, betterand safer products."

notch. Ryan is extremely professionaland makes himself extremely available. If you want to meet with an attorneythat acts like a real person and treatsyou the same, Ryan Doddridge andWollinka & Wollinka should be at thetop of the list.”

Attorney Doddridge also is work-ing on executing an informative emailblog that will keep Wollinka &Wollinka clients informed of updates atthe practice and in the many laws thataffect us daily. The staff at thelaw firm is just as dedicated to helpingtheir clients as the attorneys, and theyall work together to maintain an excel-lent relationship.

Estate PlanningThis kind of law often requires a

long-term relationship that, like any re-lationship, is built on trust and under-standing. The attorneys of Wollinka &Wollinka are experienced in estate plan-ning, which includes creating wills, es-tablishing trusts, and drafting advanceddirectives and powers of attorney. Theirexperience in this area is invaluable andthey understand that preparing for peo-ple’s future in the event that somethinghappens to them is a very delicate mat-ter, but an important one.

Many of us don’t have officialwills, and have not established trusts for

our children ormade tough deci-sions like who willbe in charge of ourfinancial and med-ical decisions if wewere to become in-capacitated. Manyof us also mistak-enly believe thatthis kind of prepa-ration is reservedfor the excessivelywealthy. WhileWollinka &Wollinka is experi-enced in helping

wealthy clients, they are also experi-enced at helping the rest of us preparefor what must be looked at as the in-evitable. The important question reallyneeds to be asked: Who will take careof your children if you are incapaci-tated? Where will they stay in the in-terim? If you do not have a properlydrawn will and/or advanced directive, your children could needlessly getcaught up in the judicial system, whilecourt costs and attorney fees rise for thefamily.

Attorney Wollinka says, “Failure toestablish the right kind of documentscan result in 10 times that in courtcosts and attorney’s fees to institute aguardianship.” What could be moreimportant? That’s why Wollinka &Wollinka provides free consultations fortheir clients.

At Wollinka & Wollinka, there is avariety of affordable packages that canhelp their clients prepare for the future. They understand that there can be no“one-size-fits-all” plan for your family.Wollinka & Wollinka is experienced athelping you protect your assets by shar-ing strategies that help to limit estateand gift taxes, which can make a largeimpact on your family after a loved onedies.

Wollinka & Wollinka’s many yearsof experience have given them thecompassion that is so important whenworking with grieving families. They

understand the emotions involved andcan administer an individual’s estatewith compassion. When someonepasses away, the person chosen to rep-resent the estate analyzes the assets anddebts. After debts are paid, the remain-ing assets are distributed to the benefi-ciaries. The attorneys at Wollinka &Wollinka know how to handle thesedelicate situations and work with fami-lies to make the process go as smoothlyas possible. If any problems arise, theyare ready to help iron them out.

Elder LawUnfortunately many of our senior

citizens do not get the care that theydeserve. Some believe that it is one ofthe biggest failures in our society, howwe do not better care for those who areno longer able to take care of them-selves. Wollinka & Wollinka has beenprotecting senior citizens for manyyears, and can help families navigate themany complicated issues that may arisethrough Medicaid, determiningguardianship, incapacity planning andthe many estate planning directives thatneed to be decided ahead of time.

Real EstateBuying, selling, renting or leasing

They handle title insurance, pur-chases, sales, refinances, can navigatecomplicated closing procedures and canhelp write leases. If there’s ever a dis-pute between a buyer and a seller, it’s

important to have someone at theready to take your side and pull youthrough the fog that can be Real EstateLaw.

Commercial real estate is a differ-ent animal than residential, and Attor-ney Wollinka says, “You should alwayshave an attorney regardless, in this typeof transaction because of the contractsinvolved.” He goes on to describe themany crediting and debiting issues, rental roles and contracts with tenantsthat are so important in commercialreal estate.

Tucked in the back corner of thebustling NYC Bar within The LuckyDill, the Paul Anthony Duo melodi-cally transformed the restaurant intoa leisurely dining experience. TheLucky Dill, with its restaurant, bak-ery and Tribeca Lounge, offers afresh, mouth-watering menu. Ifthat’s not enough to make you wantto savor your time and relax, thenightly live music will.

Jimmy Cappezzuto, Mr. Amaz-ing (according to his Lucky Dill busi-ness card) is responsible forscheduling the music. They don’t ad-vertise for bands, the bands findthem. Cappezzuto has been in thebusiness a long time, so some of thescheduled musicians are people he’sknown for years. Others call him andask – how do we get in? He said hehas at least 200 demo CDs in his of-fice.

With such a high demand formusicians, they host open auditionson Monday nights, allowing musi-cians to come and play for a half-

hour. They are looking for all differ-ent types of music to satisfy their di-verse clientele. On the weeknightsthey schedule one man acoustics andduos, and the weekends are saved forfull bands.

On Wednesday, Aug. 22 the PaulAnthony Duo, more commonlyknown as the Paul Anthony Band, played a two-man set at The LuckyDill. They are a local talent fromGulfport, FL. Lead guitar and vocals,Paul Anthony, moved to Florida in1994 with his band, seeking a morehappening music scene than Cleve-land, OH. He has since parted wayswith his original band members, andhe now has Doug Catalano on drumsand Paul Kruse on bass and vocals.

From the beginning Anthonyhad no problem finding gigs, playinghis first set at Dave’s Aqua Lounge, ablues place off of Gandy Blvd. in St.Petersburg. To get started he justdrove around, read a lot of maga-zines, and played for free to getknown. Now he is playing betweenfive to seven nights a week. Anthonymostly performs with his band, but

he does duos and singles aswell. At The Lucky Dill, onthis particular night, heplayed a duo with Kruse onbass.

Surrounded by the dimlighting and the NYC décor,an ever-changing coloredlight glowed against the wallbehind them. Anthony andKruse set up at the top ofthe steps leading from thebar into the TribecaLounge. Looking down atthe patrons, most sippingon wine, beer and cocktails, they played crowd-favoritecovers that inspired cheers, claps and a few in the crowdto sing along.

The duo was able torock out, offering the crowdtheir promised “a little some-thing for everyone,” which iswhat the band is known for. They listtheir influences as Jesus Christ,Jimmy Hendrix and Bruce Lee.When questioned about how JesusChrist influences his music, Anthony

said, “I think we’re all held account-able for the gifts he gives us.” Giventhe gift of music, on his newestalbum track seven worships JesusChrist with the song, “Jesus Rose,”

helping Anthony to “give back abit.”

Anthony gave The Lucky Dill ataste of his soul-felt music, startinghis set with Stevie Ray Vaughan, oneof his all-time favorite guitar players. They played a variety of music; TomPetty, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, just to name a few. They threw insome originals along the way, includ-ing “Pickin’ for a Livin,’” which is asolid tune that captures the blues andsouthern rock sound the Paul An-thony Band has strummed together.

Anthony just recently picked uphis gig at The Lucky Dill, and de-scribes it as extremely low key. “I likethe atmosphere, I like the food and Ilike the people,” he said. Open latenights, The Lucky Dill offers a menu,“slimmed” down to between 60-70food items to choose from, a largerselection than most restaurants offerany time of the day. They display a
