Ben Rose House AdditionChallenge: Modernist architecture is known for its timelessness and its ability to stand alone. Adding to modernism is a complex and delicate task. Choose a modernist building and propose an addition.

Approach: I chose the Ben Rose House located in Highland Park, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. The house was made famous from its debut in the movie, “Ferris Bueler’s Day Off.” The inherent theme of the Ben Rose House is connection to nature. I continued to enhanced this theme by prioritizing the views, open air, and intimate conversational space in an exterior setting.

Solution: My design includes a deck space immediately adjacent to the house along with a larger open pavilion extending into the woods and overlooking the ravine. The geometry is simple but unsympathetic to the existing structures. It is meant to stand out, but act as a retreat to the simplistic nature of the site.

Sustainable Building Case StudyChallenge: Sustainability is most ideal to apply to new buildings for the most optimal building performance. Applying sustainable methods to older existing buildings is a big challenge. Choose an old building to study, analyze, and propose sustainability methods.

Approach: I chose the Woodbourne Library in Centerville, OH. This modernist building was designed by Woodie Garber and built in 1965. The building has had two additions, and these additions were also considered. Climate Consultant was used to study the climate, weather, and wind conditions annually.

Solution: Many aspects were considered and addressed in this project including site conditions, sun paths and angles, wind patterns, microclimates, thermal barriers, air barriers, and the drainage planes.Alloftheseaspectsgreatlyinfluencedthere-design.

Challenge: Thissemesterlongprojectfocusedonthebenefitsanddesign of a green roof.

Approach: I proposed a green roof for the Whole Foods Headquarters building in Austin, TX. The Whole Foods brand is known for its quality standards, commitment to the community, and environment. Whole Foods would be an ideal leader in the urban agriculture movement. The headquarters building is located in a dense downtown area in which a green roof would promote the connection of green spaces in the city.

Solution: I designed a green roof for both the lower and upper roofs. The upper roof is designed to be an extensive modular system with sedum so as to improve the urban heat island and reduce cooling loads on the building during hot summers. There are also areas on the upper roof meant for research. The lower roof is designed as an intensive loose-laid system best suited for urban agriculture. The lower roof will provide produce for the community and the cooking school within the building. Other areas of study not included on this page are incentive, policy, and codes for the city, a critical path plan for the most opportune schedule of installation, and a staging plan for construction and installation purposes.

Woodbourne Library AdditionChallenge: The Woodbourne Library is in need of additional programming space. The existing modernist library was built in 1965. The library has acquired the two lots of land directly north of their current lot. One of the largest challenges of this project was the gas pipeline and its easements that run though the current site and between the two new lots.

Approach: I chose a sympathetic approach using the same vocabulary as the original building. I also focused my design on other Woodie Garber buildings including his use of canted and storefront glass.

Solution: I worked with the client to create a realistic and sympathetic design to the original building. The new site plan allows for a much larger parking area, large park, and additional square footagetofitthelibrary’sneeds.

Pool HouseChallenge: This six week project studied enclosure, foundation, siting, and sequencing techniques of a pool house program.

Approach: I prioritized dynamic yet private spaces focusing on the user and their individual experience. The user would have a choice to partake in the pool’s programs in a peaceful and relaxing way.

Solution: I focused my design on a non-orthagonal parti which gave me the freedomtocreateadynamicroofingstructurewithapush/pull skylighting system. The parti continues through to the massing of the buildings around the open plan of the complex which would allow visitors to openly choose their path of travel as well as their experience. The pools surround the massings creating a sense of separation and privacy while being closely connected to other program aspects.

Challenge: Study how to create space with a studio-designed “unit.” Each unit must be able to interconnect in order to form a larger space. Pay close attention to materiality and the connections of each unit.

Approach: As a studio, we focused largely on materiality and connection of each unit.

Solution: As project manager, I was responsible for overseeing the design, construction, and assembly of the units and spaces. As a studio, our unit consisted of eight aluminum bars connected by nuts and bolts.

GenslerAs an intern for Gensler of Houston, TX, I worked on the LEED Documentation for three projects being built in The Woodlands, TX. All threeareofficebuildings,andstriveforLEEDSilver. I also worked on a hotel renovation for a local hospital in the medical district in Houston.Thehotelisusedspecificallyforcancer patients, to provide easy access to treatment. My responsibilities included picking up redlines, tagging elements, drawing enlarged sections, and creating LEED documentation.

Earl SwenssonAs an intern for Earl Swensson Associates in Nashville, TN, I assisted in creating construction documents for a few hospital projects. I was mentored by an employee with over 40 years of architectural, engineering, and surveying experience. We worked together to draw sections for a hospital in Florida. He taught me the conventions of drafting sections and the construction methods that go along with it.

SHP Leading DesignAs an intern for SHP Leading Design in Cincinnati, OH, I assisted in a wide variety of design work ranging from schematic design to design development. I worked primarily in Revit, Navis Works, and SketchUp.

While at SHP, I worked on over twenty different projects. This taught me to prioritize and work quickly while still producing quality work.

I participated in volunteer opportunities while in Texas. As a team of co-workers, we helped

plant 100 trees by hand. Our team was one of many to plant over 1,000 trees that day.

The second volunteer opportunity I was able to partake in was an event by Rebuilding

Together: Houston. With a team of general contractors, we renovated and painted an

elderly man’s home in one day. We replaced rotted boards, front and back doors, and

painted the exterior of the house.
