To be a Moose Booster -See Bill Savelli

Make a donation of $5 / person per year [$10 / couple] to our “Lodge Booster Fund”, Satellite Beach Moose Lodge #2367

P.O. Box 373175 Satellite Beach, FL. 32937-2631 Or drop it off at the Lodge in an envelope marked for “Lodge Administrator”

February was a good month for the Chicken Fry, Steak Dinner, Valentine Dinner/Dance, Polish Dinner thru the District Meeting. All were well at-

tended and considered by all to compliment the lodge. Our only disappointment was the temporary loss of our cook Lamar Crutchfield's expertise in the kitchen doing our lunches and Saturday breakfast. He will be out for a while pending an operation. In his place will be Chantal Phillips equally capable of preparing the good food associ-ated with the lodge and keeping the menu as is with the exception of adding Friday Night. We would like to see more of you at the monthly meetings, your input would be welcome and could possibly help solve some of the problems the lodge has to deal with. I would like to remind everyone of the Lodge Annual Election of Officers which will take place on April 16, 2014. For those of you who would like to become involved in the lodge policies and procedures as a candidate you can find the de-tails in last month's Seabreeze. A special section for that purpose under the heading of ELECTION INFORMATION gives dates and details or you can call the office of the Administrator at 321-779-5744 and we will answer your questions. If you don't run for office take your time and check out the candidates before you vote and make a decision based on the facts that you have been able to compile. Also, remember our program still in effect of signing on two new members and receiving ONE YEAR FREE MEMBERSHIP. This is an excellent program and is good for both the NEW MOOSE MEMBER and THE SPONSOR RECIEVING the FREE YEAR. Call the office for any questions you may have regarding this" Almost Too Good To Be True" opportunity

Tommy Moose® is a friendly, playful,

cuddly moose doll whose sole purpose is

to bring comfort to children in times of

stress, uncertainty, or anxiety. He

personifies one of the cornerstone tenants

of the Loyal Order of Moose: caring for

children.

Tommy originated as a Moose

community service project in Connecticut

and soon spread throughout the US and

Canada. Since 2002, over 100,000 Tommy Moose plush dolls have been

donated to shelters, hospitals, and emergency workers, who in turn

deliver them to children in need of some comfort when facing some of

life’s biggest challenges.

The Tommy Moose character has grown and developed beyond the

comforting plush toy program. Tommy’s heart‐warming “origin” appears

in a unique children’s Color‐Along Story Book® a format that combines

an easy to read story in pages suitable for youngsters to color.

Tommy also appears on complimentary bookmarks, available at many

public and school libraries courtesy of Moose Lodges and Chapters in the

U.S. and Canada. The bookmark also includes a list of safety tips for

children to follow while using the Internet.

A line of infant through toddler clothing has been developed bearing

Tommy’s image, and the Tommy Moose life size mascot appears

throughout the country in parades and events, meeting and greeting

children and posing for pictures.

The Tommy Moose® program is easily one of the most successful

Community Service outreach programs in the history of the Loyal Order

of Moose. Its success lies in its simple message and uncomplicated

structure.

Moose Lodges and Chapters across the U.S. and Canada have

purchased over 100,000 Tommy Moose plush dolls and presented them

to Police, Fire, and other Emergency Workers, to be carried in their

vehicles.

The Tommy dolls are given to children who have been encountered

during stressful or traumatic situations, calming them, and giving them a

soothing object to refocus their attention toward, while emergency aid

takes place.

DRESS CODE

The Lodge quarters accommodate two distinct functions;

Meetings of the Fraternal Organizations [LOOM & WOTM] Social gatherings of the members in the Social Quarters

Proper, comfortable, and socially acceptable dress is required at all times when visiting the Lodge for either business (such as General Membership Meetings, Business Meetings, District Meetings when held at the Lodge, or other special meetings) or pleasure (visiting the Bar, playing games, having dinner or parties).

The House Committee of the Lodge, in order to insure the comfort of the general membership, institute the following Dress Code Regulations;

Social Quarters: 1. Publicly acceptable dress may be worn during informal afternoons at the Lodge. 2. After 6:00 P.M., “Tank-Tops”, “Flip-Flops”, Beach Shorts, or Bathing Trunks are inappropriate attire. 3. Any appropriate casual wear such as “Tee-Shirts”, Slacks, Walking Shorts and appropriate foot-wear are encouraged. Meetings: 1. Appropriate dress is required for attendance at any meeting of the Lodge or Chapter. The Chapter is governed by it’s own Dress Code for these activities. 2. “Tank-Tops” and “flip-flops” are specifically NOT allowed to be worn at any meeting of the Lodge. Other comfortable and appropriate foot-wear and top garments may be worn. 3. Bathing trunks or “chopped-off” shorts are not allowed at meetings. Why We Ask You To..... Show Your Membership Card

Doing so maintains our rights as a private organization - and can, quite literally, save your Lodge (and you) from financial ruin. I have walked into several hundred Moose Lodges during my years as a member -and every time, I have been proud to reach into my wallet as I entered, to fulfill there requirement of displaying my Moose membership card. I have always thought of this small plasticized card as saying several things about me - and about any other man or woman who carries one: ∙ It says that the holder is a fraternalist, a friendly person who enjoys thecompany of others - and who stands ready to help a fellow human being in need whenever he or she can. ∙ It says that the holder is someone who holds a special place in his or her heart for children. Through his or her Moose membership, he is doing something real and tangible to provide hope and a better life for youngsters in need, at Mooseheart Child City and School in Illinois. ∙ And, it says that the holder is ensuring - even if he or she (and his or her spouse) reaches retirement age without adequate savings - that together they will enjoy a secure, dignified retirement without being a burden to either family or society, through the availability of Moosehaven in Florida. Even though showing a Moose membership cards says all those positive things about a person, I know very well that the fraternity’s requirement that a membership card be shown every time a member enters a Lodge, or makes a purchase, has for years been a big point of irritation among thou-sands of Moose men and women across North America. "Fifteen years I’ve been a member here; why in the world should I have to show my card every time I walk in the door?" During my tenure as General Governor, I’ve read or heard some variation of that question literally thousands of times. Let me pose a question in return: Consider this carefully: You’re the Jr. Past Governor walking into your Lodge’s Social Quarters on a busy Friday afternoon, the door opened for you by a polite smiling thirtyish man you don’t quite recognize but who’s arrived at the same time. Must be a fairly new member, you think. Inside, the server, recognizing you - and knowing how much it irritates you! Decides against asking for your card. You place a dollar-fifty on the bar, request and receive a beer. Then, not wanting to offend the young man now standing next to you, the server also draws a beer for him without asking for a card. At the next month’s Lodge meeting, then, this nightmare: your Administrator’s trembling hand holds an invoice for more than $90,000 in back federal income taxes, interest, penalties and fees. The invoice has been presented to him that day by that same pleasant young man you’d stood next to at the bar that Friday afternoon! He was the regional IRS agent - and you had been right there when he witnessed the Lodge operating as a public accommodation! If your Lodge’s situation is like many, it can get even worse: Let’s say the Lodge simply can’t scrape together $90,000 cash to pay that IRS demand, nor does the Lodge have that much equity in its building; it’s heavily mortgaged. Regrettably, as a Lodge officer, the IRS could legitimately look for some or all of that $90,000 from you - personally. This scenario is not an unrealistic exaggeration. It has actually happened to more than one Moose Lodge in recent years. Their officers and longtime members didn’t want to

be "bothered" with having to show their membership cards. Well, they paid a substantial price to be freed of that "bother." Let’s put the IRS and the income tax issue aside for a moment. * Under the First Amendment to the U.S. constitution ("the right of the people peaceably to assemble"), fraternal Lodges such as ours enjoy special rights as a private organization. We are exempt from laws requiring royalties to be paid to music publishers such as BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC for "public performances" of musical selections from bands and jukeboxes. We get to run our operations under our own rules and bylaws, instead of being bound by civil court litigation. Perhaps most importantly, we have the right to choose who will associate with us. We can choose whom we wish to have with us as fellow members - instead of having to take anyone who walks in the door, as is required of "places of public accommodation" under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. (And lest anyone jump to conclusions, that last sentence does NOT mean we in the Moose afford ourselves the right to discriminate on the basis of race in choosing our members. That would be stupid, even if it weren’t dangerous. Fine men and women, come in every race and ethnicity - and we need them. What it does mean is that we maintain the right to say, to an applicant who is known to be a chronic abuser of women, or a bully, a liar or cheat: "No we don’t choose to have you with us."). But - we lose all of those rights that a private organization enjoys, if we don’t conduct ourselves as a private organization! We cannot have it both ways. When a Lodge chooses not to check membership cards, and essentially opens itself up to the public (with the exception of approved Community Service activities, consult the fraternity’s General Laws book), that Lodge puts the entire fraternity at risk of: ∙ Relinquishing the BMI/ASCAP/SESAC exemptions, ∙ Losing our right to operate under our own rules, and ∙ Losing the right to choose our own members. If your Lodge officers tell you that nonmembers are allowed purchasing privileges because "that’s the way it’s done around here," or "we’ve have to do it to make ends meet," or "what Moose International doesn’t know won’t hurt them," you should know that your Lodge is placing its tax-exempt private status in jeopardy - and that of the entire fraternity as well. Showing your card may be a slight inconvenience, but it is worth it to protect our Mooseheart kids and Moosehaven seniors entrusted to our care. Even (perhaps especially!) if you’ve been a member for many years, be proud to show your Moose card every time you walk into your Lodge - even if you’re not asked! It shows that you’re the sort of person who believes in doing something for the betterment of kids and seniors in need, and in making our communities better places to live - and in maintaining our fraternity’s legal ability to do what we do, for many years to come. Former General Governor
