As a 1st, this year there were opportunities for the Moose to

publically demonstrate just what we are all about. From a

blood and food and clothing drive to going to various charita-

ble agencies in the Las Vegas area and doing whatever they

needed to have done….. By golly we showed ‘em! This is

Gaila, Noreen and Byron at St. Therese Center. There were

also; Three Square Food Bank, Salvation Army, The Shade

‘openings’ and they quickly filled up with more folks wanting

Senior Regents Corner June has been quite a month for the

Lodge. Cookie’s Lasagna Dinner raised

$200 for St Mary’s Food Pantry. Jeanet-

te’s AOF Luncheon was a hit! We had

the Shrimporee Parade and sold lots of

turkey legs!

I actually made the flight to and from

Vegas without Gaila and Byron having to

use the duct tape on me!! We spent a

day doing community service. Two bus

loads went to St. Theresa’s to clean the

grounds and restock food shelves and

BJ donated blood to the local Blood

Bank.

Congratulations to Gaila on her appoint-

ment to the International Communica-

tions Committee and BJ for getting her

Academy of Friendship!

I was asked what impressed me the

most about the convention and my an-

swer was that ‘every Moose member

that I met ha a smile on their face and

extended their hand out to shake mine’.

Checkout our calendar for July. Lots of

activities to attend. Breakfasts on Sun-

days one dish on Thursdays and great

meals on Fridays. SO, mark the dates

an come join us!

And last, I want to thank all the ladies

for their hard work; plan-

ning, cooking and clean-

ing up.

Remember to smile, it

increases your face val-

ue!!

Noreen Wylie, Senior Re-

gent

From the Governor’s Desk Hello again “To All”

First of all I would like to thank all the

LOOM and WOTM members “WE DID IT

AGAIN” for the 4 th. consecutive year we

won the Premier Lodge award, this year

only 268 out of 1700 lodges won this

prestigious award – “YOU ALL DESERVE

TO GIVE YOURSELVES A GREAT BIG PAT

ON THE BACK”.

Convention was great, as usual, a lot of

good information and camaraderie. It’s

always refreshing to go to a State or

International convention, you always

come away with a renewed since of pur-

pose and enthusiasm. The best part of

a convention, for me, is meeting people

from other lodges you’d be surprised

how much it makes you realize how

good your lodge is and how great this

fraternity is overall.

The Moose “Heart of the Community”

office organized a “Community Service

Day” approximately 500 of us went to

assist several Community organizations

in Las Vegas, Blood Drive, an HIV Out-

reach center, the food bank, etc. We’re

going to do this again at next year’s con-

vention in Nashville. This activity is

something we should consider doing in

our communities; anyone who would like

to volunteer to head this up please see

me.

We have two very significant activities

that are quickly approaching and we

need all the help we can get to make

them a success. On August 1st. we will

be hosting the Supreme Governor, Dan-

ny R. Albert, Kevin is heading up this

committee and on September the 13th.

we will be having our 911 Remem-

brance Day Ceremony, Byron is heading

up this committee.

The Mooseheart school renovation pro-

gram is going real well we are 70% of

the way to our 10 Million dollar goal.

Several experts told us this was impossi-

ble; we couldn’t raise 10 Million an

there was absolutely no way we could do

it in this short time frame, shows you

how much the “Experts” don’t know

about Moose people. TMA gave another

5,000 dollars to the Mooseheart School

Renovation program at the convention

and has agreed to sponsor the renova-

tion of another class room at a cost of

$25,000. We’ll be selling tickets again

and, if you buy one you could win

$3,000 (1st. Prize $1,500, 2nd. Prize

$1,000, and 3rd. Prize $500) you can

win all three because your ONE SINGLE

ticket can win all three times, yes is it

possible. Last go round an individual

won $2,000 on the first drawing, Gaila

won a $1,000 and I also won. So when

we come around selling tickets please

buy some it’s for a good cause and it

could also put some money in your

pocket.

Because of you and what you do we are

known as the BIGGEST little lodge in the

whole of the Moose Fraternity.

God Bless you

for all that you

do –

Robert Vaden –

Governor

Words From Our Administrator

Chaplain’s Chair First I would like to say thank you to the

men and women of the armed forces.

Not for a day or a month, but for every

day. This nation didn't forget about you,

but doesn’t realize the pain you go

through when you leave, and the pain

your families go through when you say

goodbye. I pray for you and your families

every day and forever so I don't forget.

May the lord watch and guide you to

safety and shield your families hearts to

not break so easily.

From your Chaplain,

Christine N. Michaels

MOOSE INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION

Well let’s see, 10 hours to get

there and I thought that was the trip

from hell until we tried to get home.

That one took 22 hours with a detour to

McAllen and 3 hour drive home. Let’s

just say traveling these days is an ad-

venture; every plane we flew on was

100% full. OK I’ll quit whining.

Convention was great, got to see a

bunch of Moose from other Texas lodg-

es and we got to meet some very nice

folks from all over Mooseland. All the

proposed changes were passed by the

delegates. The one I believe that will

make the most difference is that a lady

can now sign a man and man can now

sign a man. (will let you know when this

goes into effect)

Once more our lodge received the Plati-

num award, for the 4th. Consecutive year

I’ll have you know. Texas Moose Associ-

ation (TMA) won Top- Association

(again), actually tied with South Caroli-

na. Over the past 3 years TMA has fin-

ished 1st. twice and 2nd once (by a

miniscule 3 points.)

MEMBERSHIP - The WOTM showed an

increase, the Moose Legion showed an

increase, the LOOM showed a decrease.

If you could take a trip to Mooseheart or

Moosehaven then you would get

“religion” you wouldn’t have to ask why

we are the sole supporter for these two

entities. Along that line District 7 is go-

ing to organize a trip to Mooseheart. If

you have never been you really need to

consider going, see Kevin for details.

Las Vegas is HOT, I don’t care if it is a

dry heat it’s just plain HOT, Noreen was

begging for humidity. Las Vegas has a

saying “what goes on in Vegas, stays in

Vegas” so I am hoping that those who

took pictures left them there otherwise

if they get to a Moose Legion Celebra-

tion its going to be expensive for me and

several others. By the way the Casino

asked Gaila and me to come back; let’s

just say Gaila and I contributed to their

economy, Now Robert on the other hand

did what Robert does, WON.

For all you do for others and espe-

cially for what you do for Moose-

heart, Moosehaven, and our local

communities – THANK YOU -

Any suggestions or complaints that you

might have please let me know @ - 832-

215-112 or by e-mail, or catch me at

the lodge - [email protected]

- Irish Sayings

Nine-tenths of the value of a sense of

humor in writing is not in the things it

makes one write but in the things it

keeps one from writing. It is especially

valuable in this respect in serious writ-

ing, and no one without a sense of hu-

mor should ever write seriously. For

without knowing what is funny, one is

constantly in danger of being funny with-

out knowing it.

The Republic Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Thou, too, sail on, O Ship of State!

Sail on, O Union, strong and great!

Humanity with all its fears,

With all the hopes of future years,

Is hanging breathless on the fate!

We know what Master laid the keel,

What Workmen wrought thy ribs of steel,

Who made each mast, and sail, and rope,

What anvils rang, what hammers beat,

In what forge and what a heat

Were shaped the anchors of thy hope!

Fear not each sudden sound and shock,

'Tis of the wave and not the rock;

'Tis but the flapping of the sail,

And not a rent made by the gale!

In spite of rock and tempest's roar,

In spite of false lights on the shore,

Sail on, nor fear to breast the sea!

Our hearts, our hopes, are all with thee,

Our hearts, our hopes, our prayers, our tears,

Our faith triumphant o'er our fears,

Are all with thee, - are all with thee!

Fantastic Foods Cookie’s Lasagna Dinner was to die for

(she even provided anchovies for those

few of us who like them). Of course this

was a given as any of you who have had

her spaghetti or lasagna know. She

raised $200 for St. Mary’s Food Bank.

On the first Friday Fred manned the grill

for Steak Night…. Yummy!. The second

Friday you should have either been

working the booth at Shrimporee OR at

Shrimporee buying turkey legs from

those who were selling them. Moose

Legion Burgers were a hit on the third

Friday with Bob C and Kevin doing the

honors. And finally, on the 4th Friday the

WOTM stuffed peppers were a sellout.

Not only were the peppers great (thanks

Christine and Pat) but the scalloped

potatoes (Noreen and BJ) and the green

beans (Mary Ann and Mary Lou) really

hit the spot. The potatoes were the first

to disappear. There was also bread and

dessert—not sure who brought that.

Academy of Friendship Revealing

and Luncheon Jeannette did an outstanding job putting

this together. Notwithstanding her

‘running around in circles’ and being

concerned everything went off very well.

Lots of ladies attended, looked at their

gifts, played games, ate good food, and

selected their secret pals for the current

year. Hopefully we made some folks

jealous so they want to join the AOF al-

so! Thanks Jeannette for a good job!

Miscellaneous Moosings

June Birthflower

Moose Tales July, 2014 Page 6

In Greek my-

thology larkspur

sprang up from

the blood of

Alex after he killed himself

following a temper tan-

trum resulting in an act of

dishonor when he did not

receive Achilles’ armor.

Other healing uses include

the treatment of hemor-

rhoids, colic in children

and wound repair.

Larkspur was also said to

have had magical powers

as it carries feminine ener-

gy. In addition to healing

wounds and combating

lice, larkspur was used

with any spell related to

the protection, care and

comfort of soldiers and

other figures of authority.

It has also been known to

be used in ceremonies

honoring war dead.

Miscellaneous Moosings

Rubies were be-

lieved to contain the

spark of life – “a

deep drop of the heart’s

blood of Mother Earth”.

Greek legends told the

story of a female stork,

who repaid the kindness

of Heraclea by bringing

her a brilliant ruby – a

ruby so bright that it illu-

minated Heraclea’s room

at night. In the Middle

Ages, rubies were thought

to bring good health, as

well as guard against

wicked thoughts, amorous

desires, and disputes. It

was believed that the ruby

held the power to warn its

owner of coming misfor-

tunes, illness, or death, by

turning darker in color. It

is said that Catherine of

Aragon, first wife of King

Henry VIII, predicted her

downfall in seeing the

darkening of her ruby.

Presenting check to Joe & Cathy Apodaca

District 7 in San Antonio Byron and I couldn’t go as we were out of

town BUT, it was an excellent and profitable

meeting in our opinion. We got a call saying

that Cougar McLaughlin won the $500

drawing. Cougar is very appreciative and

says that this will buy a LOT of kitty treats

and maybe even a can of tuna.

I understand that it was a good, informative

meeting and Noreen got to make her first

report as Senior Regent and, as always, the

food was great.

Moose International—Las Vegas Lots of stuff elsewhere on the convention

but just one more photo. BJ giving blood on

Community Service day

Membership/Retention Fundraiser As the chairman of this committee, Cookie

Michaels raised $200 for the St. Mary . This

organization is doing a wonderful service for

our community.

WOTM Chairman Luncheon Wish more of the chairmen could have been

there but it was still a very successful meet-

ing. Those of us who have held chairs, offic-

es, etc. forget how intimidating it is to be

asked to take a chair and you have no clue

exactly what that means or what is ex-

pected of you. This meeting was a big help.

Shrimporee Several others have mentioned Shrimporee

and there are pictures earlier in the news-

letter so the only thing left to say is; ‘Thank

you to everyone who came out and helped.

From hauling all the ‘stuff’ out there, man-

ning the pits, working the booth, set up and

tear down. Couldn’t have happened without

you.

Love (or something) Is In The Air Two couples celebrated a renewal of vows

last month! Bob and Lisa Kae Carlson, 15

years and Warren and Lois Dugas, 50

years! Congratulations and best wishes for

many more years.

Renovations WOW! Have you been to the Lodge lately?

Sherelia has painted and ‘uncluttered’ the

Lodge walls and shelves. Now you can see

all of the license plates and other stuff

proudly displayed and the shelves look

great. Let’s give her a big thank you when

you see her.

The kid’s room is also coming along thanks

to John F., Bobby B., Loyd Navarro, A.J. M.,

Raymond D. and others.

Meetings Business have meetings, the PTA has

meetings, churches have meetings and

guess what? The Moose has meetings.

I’ve never heard anyone say; ‘oh goodie

another meeting how exciting, I want to

go!’ But, some meetings are necessary

to keep our lodge and chapter running

smoothly and effectively. Sometimes it

seems as if all of the meetings are at-

tended by the same people. Well, if you

don’t come to meetings and participate,

you are letting that same small group of

people decide what happens in your

lodge and your chapter. This is the be-

ginning of a new Moose Year. Why not

make a ‘Moose Year Resolution’ and

come to a few meetings. You can hear

what’s going on, put your ideas and sug-

gestions forward and help make a dif-

ference. Try it you might like it. I prom-

ise it’s not as painful as a root canal!

The regularly scheduled meetings are:

LOOM: General Membership 2nd and

4th Thursdays

WOTM: Activity Meeting 1st Monday

Business Meeting 3rd Monday

JOINT: Round Table— 2nd Thursday—

This is a VERY important meet

Meetings each month.

1 tablespoon sugar

1 cup ice cubes

White:

1 cup coconut sorbet

1/4 cup rum

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (about 2 li-

mes)

1 cup ice cubes

Directions

Begin by making the blue layer: Put 1 1/2

cups of the ice cubes in the carafe of a

blender. Add the passion fruit liqueur, lime

juice, blue curacao, rum and sugar. Blend

until slushy and there are no chunks of ice

left, adding the remaining 1/2 cup of ice if

needed. Transfer to a large measuring cup

or small bowl and place in the freezer while

you make the next layer.

For the red layer: Rinse out the blender and

then add the frozen strawberries, watermel-

on, lime juice, rum and sugar. Blend until

slushy and there are no chunks of fruit.

With the motor running, add the ice, a few

cubes a time, until thick and smooth. Stir in

1 to 2 tablespoons water if the consistency

is too thick. Transfer to another small bowl

and place in the freezer while making the

final layer.

For the white layer: Rinse out the blender

and add the coconut sorbet, rum and lime

juice. Blend until smooth and thick. With

the motor running, add the ice, a few cubes

at a time, and continue to blend until thick

and no bits of ice remain.

Pour the red layer into the bottom of six 8-

ounce glasses, about 1/3 cup each. Gently

spoon 1/3 cup of the blue layer over the

red layer so they stay separate. Finish by

spooning 1/3 cup of the white layer over

the second layer in each glass.
