Who will be the next Music Director? This is an exciting time for the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra and for our community. In its 81-year history, the symphony has had

only five conductors. The decision of who will be the next artistic leader is a momentous one which will involve valuable input from theorchestra musicians, audience members, symphony supporters, students, and community members - including YOU!

When you attend the Masterworks concerts this year, you will have the opportunity to share your thoughts about each of the five finalistswith the Conductor Search Committee and the symphony’s Board of Trustees. Since this is a rare and exciting occasion, we hope you

will plan on attending all five concerts. And you may as well save money while you’re at it by purchasing Season Tickets!

The countdown begins...

How does a Conductor Search work?1. Self-Study and Preparation - The symphony spent several months planning the search process, creating the Conductor Search

Committee, assessing the orchestra’s accomplishment under former Music Director Bernie Rubenstein’s leadership, determining future direction and goals, and advertising the position.

2. Selecting the Finalists - Out of 140 applicants from all over the world, the Conductor Search Committee spent several months selecting the five finalists who will be featured as guest conductors this season.

3. Conductor Search Season - During the week that each finalist is in town, several events have been planned to maximize their engagement with many facets of the community, including school visits and master classes, presentations to service clubs, media interviews, Urban Overture appearances, and meetings with various symphony stakeholder groups. At each concert, audience members will be invited to contribute their thoughts.

4. Introduction of the New Music Director - The new Music Director will be chosen by the FMSO Board of Trustees at the endof this season, and formally introduced to the community at the beginning of the 2013-14 concert season.
