2013-2014 CONCERT SEASON

Page 2: 2013-14 Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Season Brochure

Welcome to Fargo-Moorhead, MaestroCHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN!

After three years of planning, 140 applications from conductors from all over the world, a season of Masterworks concerts with five guestconductors who were vying for the position, CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN was named in June as the new Music Director of theFargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. We are delighted with the choice and tremendously excited for our artistic future.

While all five of our conductor finalists proved themselves to be outstanding musicians, gracious individuals and enthusiastic advocates oforchestral music in our community and schools, Maestro Zimmerman stood above the rest in his passionate interpretation of the musicand the inspiring way in which he led the musicians of our orchestra to perform at their very best. Music, as it should, carried the day.

Chris has already poured heart and soul into his new role as Music Director. He traveled to Fargo to be present at the press conferenceannouncing his appointment and attended Wine & Beer on the Red, our signature annual fundraising event. He then remained for extradays in order to complete the work of planning for the season, brainstorm ideas with the Board of Trustees, and meet with the musicians.

“Experience Passion” is the theme for this season, and with good reason. You won’t want to miss a single performance of this exciting concert season. Explore the season ticket options, including a new FLEXvoucher program, and prepare for an unforgettable year!

A Note from Chris...I cannot tell you how happy I am to have been appointed as the new Music Director of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. Well, I can a bit. Here are three reasons.

Firstly, to have the chance to provide you, our patrons, with a wide range of music to experience. I hope you will love our performances, be engaged and provoked by them, be affected by them.

Secondly, to have the chance to lead and collaborate with a new set of musicians, staff, board and audience which make up the FMSO. That is, to be part of a team which will further develop the orchestra and its offerings, and continue to make this orchestra as good as it can be, genuinely indispensable to the community’s quality of life.

Thirdly, to be in a position where I can reach out to those who regard “classical music” as being a most uncool form of entertainment, and reveal it to them as something that matters.

This season’s concert programs are designed to move, stimulate, challenge and delight listener and player alike. There is a strong underpinning of English and American music – my own particular joint heritage – in the first, third and fifth programs. Most of the music in these programs is highly energized and passionate, powerfully and often beguilingly orchestrated. The other two concerts are more polite (not much). You will hear red-blooded music from Sir Edward Elgar, a FAR CRY from any stiff-upper-lip provincialism and bombast that is sometimes woefully attributedto this English master, and also we will pay 200th birthday tributes to two of the greatest composers of all time, Wagnerand Verdi, who were born in the same year, 1813. Local soloists as well as internationally-renowned artists will join thefeast, as well as a brand new work written especially for us by composer and principal bassoonist, Russ Peterson.

The orchestra and I are looking forward to bringing this music, in all its richness and diversity, to your ears.

I love the fun mix ofmusic, the informal atmosphere, and theawesome musicianshipof the players.

FMSO Chamber Music Series attendee

Like folks say in Nashville, “music is music.”

People who live in Music City might attend a

bluegrass coffeehouse gig one night, a jazz club

the next, and a symphony concert on the weekend.

That spirit of mixing up musical styles within the

intimate parameters of chamber music – small

ensembles of classical musicians performing

without a conductor – is what makes the

Chamber Music Series such a favorite

with audiences of all ages.
