(order 2320893)
I always find it odd and even a bit confusing
when people take ownership of something. I
was talking to my friend who owns the local
game store and he was talking to me about his
customers and their loyalty. See there are two
game stores in the area, and one store’s
customers will not shop or play at the other
store. Each set has taken some sort of
ownership in their chosen gaming location.
They go as far as to even tell my friend how
to run his business some times, suggestingthat he stock set types of games over others,
for no other reason then the gamers at the
“Other Place” play those game.
This applies to game companies as well, its
fan become very possessive of what you
produce. This can be a bit scary for a
publisher, you want rabid fan, hell they are
who buy your stuff, but you don’t want them
to be so rabid that they try to tell you what to
do and what to produce.
In the end it’s sort of a marriage, the publisher
and the fan. Each has to respect the other and
give a little to get.

S&G
For some time I had been working on small board games, quick and fun
little games I called Mini-Games. At some point though I found that I
was thinking about a skirmish game system, one that involved classic
monsters going at it in gangs. This was Monster Bash, the first S&G
Game. Quickly though I saw the easy use of the system and that a
generic version of the rules would allow play in just about any sort of
genre or setting. This was the beginning of S&G. At first I had planed
to only work up a single setting. I then moved into a fantasy setting
with Steel and Glory, and then into Super Heroes. Since that time I
have generated over 40 titles using this system and now have other
writers creating new and exciting settings for the system.
The goal early on with S&G was to create a set of rules once, so I could then deal more closely
with the setting itself and the various characters. This was always the fun part of game design
anyways, coming up with the idea and the “feel” of the game. S&G thus left me room to
explore all sorts of gaming location and setting without having to generate all new rules all the
time.
While working up the system I also want to keep it easy and simple, with a single set of dice
rolls controlling both the to hit factor in combat, but also determining the damage done. This
and a simple special ability system allowed an endless verity of possible characters and
situations.
S&G has always been fun, I even spent a whole year doing nothing but S&G settings, but as in
all things I run out of ideas after awhile, and so have opened up the system for others to create
their own settings and genres book. I hope that by opening it all up, we can generate some new
and exciting games.

Mark’s Musingsby Mark L. Chance of Spes Magna Games
More Convention Gaming, or How to
Not Run an Event
Way back in Game Geek 4, I mused about my
experiences at OwlCon XXIX with my son GiantBoy. It was his first gaming convention, and it gave
me an opportunity to look at the experience with
fresh eyes. My Game Geek 4 musings focused
mostly on this advice for players: Be on time, use
prep time wisely, don't hog the ball or be a
wallflower, and roleplay before you roll dice.
This time I want to focus more on the other side of
the GM screen. Giant Boy and I arrived about an
hour before our first event was due to start. This
gave us plenty of time to get our registrationpackets, don our spiffy OwlCon XXX shirts, hang
official badges around our necks, and engage in
some people watching.
Our first event was "Scooby Scooby Doo, What
ARE You???" run in one of the latest iterations of
Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu. I got to play Fred.
Giant Boy was six of the Harlem Globetrotters,
including Curly, Sweet Clyde, and Bubblegum Tate
(those last two being 'ported in from Futurama).
The other three Globetrotters were unnamed, which struck more as lazy than funny. Four other
players filled the roles of Daphne, Velma, Scoob,
and Shaggy; the latter two were played with
impressive vocal imitations by their players. The
final player did a great job as Sheriff Don Knotts.
The event started more or less on time at 3:00 p.m.
Although it was generally enjoyable, two
convention GM no-nos reared their ugly heads.
Start on Time; Finish on Time
If an event is schedule to start at 3:00 p.m., then the
GM needs to start at 3:00 p.m. If an event is
scheduled for four hours, it needs to run for at least
very close to four hours. The people sitting at the
table almost all paid to be there, and if a GM short
changes paying convention-goers on their time,
that's a lot like stealing.
"Scooby Scooby Doo, What ARE You???"
started on time, but it finished nearly 90 minuteearly. There we were, all having a reasonably
good time roleplaying our respective cartoon
characters. Five of the six Globetrotters had be
mind-controlled by fungi from Yuggoth. We ha
rescued Snidley Moneybags from bloodthirsty
cultists on an alien planet. We had finally cor-
nered the spawn of Shub-Niggurath. More or le
without warning, the event ended. Daphne
unmasked the spawn, revealing first Old Man
Winters and then Nyarlathotep.
It wasn't even 6:00 p.m. Giant Boy and I had
been cheated out of more than an hour of gamin
fun. I cannot help but think that the Keeper
could've kept the game going for its full time h
he managed to follow this next bit of advice.
Prepare and Playtest
Our Keeper's prep for "Scooby Scooby Doo,
What ARE You???" was noticeably lacking. Th
character sheets had incomplete information
(such as missing stats) and appeared hastily
scrawled, but perhaps that was just bad
penmanship.

he entire Call of Cthulhu mystery was minimally
utlined in the same hasty scrawl on a single page
f notebook paper. Torn scraps of paper marked
everal places in the rulebook, which was fre-
uently referred to without giving the sense that the
Keeper knew what he was looking for. It was
bvious the Keeper was making up a lot of it as he
went along, and the ingenuity of his improv skills
was quickly exhausted. Several incidents turned
nto hard core railroads where we players hadminimal to no chance to influence events. More
han once, the Keeper was just flat out dismissive
nd ignored or countermanded player intentions.
o provide one example, when a fungus from
Yuggoth abducted some of the Globetrotters, the
nly dice rolled were Spot Hidden checks, as if it
made any sense at all that a monster could enter a
rightly lit room and snatch three six-foot-plus
asketball players from under the noses of five
ther people without being extremely obvious. When Giant Boy had his remaining Globetrotters
ive chase, it quickly became apparent that no
ction could possibly affect any sort of rescue.
All of these -- the way too early ending, the
ncomplete character sheets, the overuse of GM
at, the insufficient notes for the adventure and
elevant rules -- indicate a lack of preparation on
he Keeper's part.
ince Giant Boy and I now had about two hoursefore our next event started, we settled into comfy
hairs, ate dinner, and engaged in more people
watching. While doing this, I noticed what might
ave been another convention GM no-no.
Keep Your Players in the Game
During "Scooby Scooby Doo, What ARE You???"
once got up to get a couple of drinks for Giant
oy and me. On the way to the cafe, I passed by a
able full of people playing Pathfinder. One of thelayers was a tall, dark-haired fellow with a poor
ttempt at a goatee. When our event ended way too
arly, Giant Boy and I settled into our comfy chairs
nd ate and watched people.
One person I watched was Poor Goatee Fellow. He
acked up his stuff, shouldered his backpack, and
eft the Pathfinder game table, not to return even
hough that particular event was still going strong.
his made me wonder: Why had Poor Goatee
Fellow left the game? Perhaps he just
got bored. Perhaps he had to leave the
convention. Or, perhaps, his character
was killed during gameplay and with
nothing left to do he had left the table
about an hour before his game actually ended.
Since I didn't see Poor Goatee Fellow rush out ofthe convention, it doesn't seem likely some
emergency had called him away from the table.
Other folks at the table looked like they were
having fun. So, via process of elimination in my
limited options scenario, Poor Goatee Fellow's
character had died during gameplay. Thus, with no
way left to participate, he abandoned the table. If
this is so, all I can say is, "Bad GM!"
As already pointed out, most people pay to game at
a convention. My payment creates certainreasonable expectations, such as the expectation
that I get to play the entire round for which I've
registered. If a player's character dies with more
than just a few minutes left to play, a good GM will
have a back-up plan. A good GM gives that player
another character, let's the player help run the
monsters during fights, et cetera. What a good GM
doesn't do is say, "Sorry about that. Better luck
next time."
Once Giant Boy and I finished dinner and people
watching, we strolled over to our second
convention game: "Crisis of Infinite Batmen" using
DC Adventures. This event started on time. It
ended on time. Everyone got to participate for the
entire period. The GM was obviously prepared,
understood the genre, and gave us players
opportunities to shine. I was Dick Grayson acting
as Batman. Giant Boy was Batman Beyond. Other
players were Kal-El Batman, Wolverine Batman,
Batwoman, and Cyber Batman. Owlman had
absorbed Bite-Mite's cosmic powers in an attempt
to rid the multiverse of all the Bruce Waynes. We
had to stop him during a climatic battle in Arkham
Asylum verus oodles of Jokers (including Lego
Joker!).
"Crisis of Infinite Batmen" was a well-run event
with only one identifiable flaw:

for taking a rest break, or even to draw breath:
one in to the tunnels event piles on event, brawl
follows brawl at breakneck pace. Possibly literally.
Narrow twisty lava tunnels barely five feet high, a
very claustrophobic place in which to give battle,
particularly for Medium or larger characters. If
fighting unusually disciplined and determined
kobolds under such conditions was not enough, they have prepared a goodly number of traps as
well! The final cavern is big enough to stand up
in, complete with the 'Big Bad' ready to rant at his
victims and a truly nasty surprise ready to un-
leash...
Much of what is going on is keyed in to the GM's
map, and the rest is described succinctly in a clear
text that will enable the adventure to run smoothly
and at the pace intended without need to hunt for
anything, especially if you run adventures off alaptop, as it's printed in landscape. All the monster
stats are collected on a couple of pages after the
text, which works in this case as the same
creatures pop up frequently. However, detailed
encounter location notes are separate from the trap
information - the same traps are used in several
places - so some preparation will be necessary so
you know what you need to use when.
As well as the marked map, a second unmarked
one is provided along with a series of map tiles
suitably scaled for use with miniatures that cover
the entire complex. The unmarked map is of little
use, as the whole point of such a twisty, enclosed
maze of passages is that you never really get an
overview of it, just seeing the bit in front of your
nose - i.e. the map tile that's in play at the time. The map tiles themselves are admirable for the
purpose - quite claustrophobic sitting here at the
computer flicking through them, never mind in the
heat of the game. A large number of 'standees' for
the hordes of kobolds you'll need are provided,
useful as even if you do have kobold miniatures in
your collection, most of us don't have that many of
them!
If a relentless meat-grinder of a dungeon death-maze appeals to your group and gaming style, this
is a good one. If your characters enjoy more than
fighting, or you want them to have a good chance
of surviving, this may not be the best choice... yet
could prove a refreshing change to a campaign in
which there is more conversation than combat.

Hellraiser
I love horror movies and a good horror
story, so it’s no surprise that I loveHellraiser. Now I have to admit I’m not
that great of a Clive Barker, fan. He’s
Ok, but I have other horror writers that I
like better. Still few have ever brought
to the silver screen a better monster, a
better fright then the Hellraiser character
Pin Head. Sure the series has
degenerated over the years, but it first
movie is still great.
If you haven’t seen it yet, you must havebeen raised in a cave, so go out into the
sun light and watch it right away, you
for sure will go hide back in your cave
once you have, fearful of the big bad
world outside.
