Veteran Jobs

Are there qualified jobs for me when I get out?

The unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time since September 2001--a group referred to as Gulf War-era II veterans--edged down to 9.0 percent in 2013, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The jobless rate for all veterans also edged down to 6.6 percent. Twenty-nine percent of Gulf War-era II veterans reported having a service-connected disability in August 2013, compared with 15 percent of all veterans.

This information was obtained from the Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly sample survey of about 60,000 households that provides data on employment and unemployment in the United States. Data about veterans are collected monthly in the CPS; those monthly data are the source of the 2013 annual averages presented in this news release. In August 2013, a supplement to the CPS collected additional information about veterans on topics such as service-connected disability and veterans’ current or past Reserve or National Guard membership. Information from the supplement is also presented in this release. The supplement was co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service.

Important Facts

Among the 722,000 unemployed veterans in 2013, 60 percent were age 45 and over. Thirty-five percent were age 25 to 44, and 5 percent were age 18 to 24.

Veterans with a service-connected disability had an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent in August 2013, little different than the rate for veterans with no disability (6.6 percent).

One in 3 employed veterans with a service-connected disability worked in the public sector in August 2013, compared with 1 in 5 veterans with no disability.

Madam Chairwoman, Ranking Member, and members of the subcomittee, on behalf of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America’s one hundred and eighty thousand members and supporters, stated that, ” America’s newest veterans face serious employment challenges. The process of returning to civilian life is complicated by the most severe economic recession in decades. Furthermore, many Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, leaving the active-duty military, find civilian employers who do not understand the value of their skills and military experience. As a result, unemployment rates for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are staggering. Additionally, the National Guardsmen and Reservists who leave behind their civilian lives to serve alongside active-duty troops, are inadequately protected against job discrimination. The experience of previous generations of veterans who faced similar situations suggest that today’s veterans may continue to struggle for years to come.”

If we do not find ways to educate, make it easier to adjust and directly correlate what veterans did while in the service to what they qualify out in the civilian community, we will be breeding a community of “lost” souls who in a lot of cases, wander the streets during the day and night.

P.T.S.D.living withit...

On or off the battlefield, the strained and war-weary men and women who have either served, or are serving in the military today are often faced with emotional scars. This has been a familiar problem throughout the centuries, where soldiers have suffered from such afflictions as anxiety, sleeplessness, nightmares, stress and depression. But today, more than ever, these normal responses to the physical and emotional hardships of war are labeled as a “mental disorder” called “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” (PTSD).

Not long ago, war trauma was treated with compassion, understanding and love. But today, the willingness to empathize with the warrior and listen to his experiences has been replaced by a psychiatric pop-a-pill “quick-fix” mentality that employs antidepressants, antipsychotics, stimulants, sedatives or anti-anxiety drugs.

These chemical compounds, however, can produce harmful consequences, and accumulating evidence shows that the ever-increasing use of psychiatric drugs may be fueling an epidemic

DRUGGING THE MILITARY—PROFITING FROM PTSD

Page 31: Gi joe promo vol1 issue1 nov 14 2

of military suicides and unexplained deaths.

From 2001 to 2009, the Army’s suicide rate increased more than 150% while orders for psychiatric drugs rose 76% over the same period. These soaring statistics cannot be attributed to the horrors of war, as 85% of military suicide victims had never even seen combat. This suggests that the PTSD diagnosis is being widely handed

out to active-duty and vets to justify putting more and more of them on cocktails of prescribed mind-altering drugs from which they may never recover.

We strive to purchase our coffee through the Fair Trade market and

other organic coffee providers.

Coffee is big business in world trade —

second only to oil. It’s a commodity,

subject to the market’s ups and downs. That’s

led to the suffering of many of the world’s 25

million coffee farmers, who often get little

financial return on this labour-intensive crop.

But it can be fair. In the late 1980s, after

nearly a century of fluctuating markets

and crashing economies, a group

of fair-minded people realized there had

to be a better way. The fair trade coffee

movement was born.When we started

G.I. Joe Coffee, we established a

partnership with

our roaster, who has experience picking

coffee beans, and now seeks the world

over finding the best Fair Trade coffee. He

became involved in importing unique

and exotic coffees. So this way, we aid

our customers in the search for our allied

farms around the world.

By becoming part of the Fair trade network,

you participate in a program that strives

for equality in the coffee industry

Gary Sinise

For the past several years I have devoted much of my time to supporting the men and women who protect and defend our great country. I have met many dedicated people who are actively working to do the same and I have tried to do what I can to support their efforts as well as spearhead many projects on my own in support of those who serve, as well as their families.

I have formed the Gary Sinise Foundation to help build additional resources for these efforts and to help highlight the activities of those who continue to do all they can to keep military families strong. I’ve traveled to visit our troops in Iraq and around the world and have also performed with my band (Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band ) in Afghanistan, Europe, United Kingdom, Asia, Guantanamo Bay and throughout the U.S. in an ef-

fort to help boost the morale of our troops and military families.

With help from supporters such as yourself, through the Gary Sinise Foundation, we will continue to expand this mission to support our na-tion’s defenders, veterans, first responders and their loved ones to promote the impor-tance of keeping our country strong by taking care of those who serve. There’s much more work to be done.

But that didn’t stop him from marrying the love of his life, Alexis. To honor the vet, the town of Tem-ecula, Calif., donated all the elements of their dream wedding — an estimated $30,000 worth of stuff, in-cluding the flowers, the venues, the photographer, and the food. But the real icing on the proverbial cake? Dominguez was able to walk down the aisle with his beautiful bride in a sunset ceremony on April 27.

“Did I ever think I was going to get to this point?” Dominguez said. “Yes, yes I did. Because nothing’s changed. I’m a little bit shorter. I lost a couple legs and an arm but my brain’s still here, my heart’s still here.”

An anonymous surpriseAfter stopping in a Dunkin Donuts this past March, Samantha Brown returned to her car to find an envelope left under her windshield wipers. In-side she found two $20 bills and a note that read:

“I noticed the sticker on the back of your car. Take your hero out to dinner when he comes home. Thank you both for serving. Him deployed and you waiting.” — United States Veteran / God Bless. [Huff-ington Post]

The sticker on the back of Ford’s car read “Half my heart is in Afghanistan.” The heart is her boyfriend Albert John DeSimone, who is serving abroad in the Army. Ford, who lives outside of Boston, went home and posted a photo of the anonymous gift on Face-book, as it was too early to call her boyfriend. Above the photo she said, “There are no words to describe how I’m feeling right now. Tears in my eyes. I just wish I could thank whoever did this! God bless our troops and all of those who stand behind them.” The picture instantly went viral, racking up more than 1.2 million likes and 142,000 shares. When Ford was finally able to tell DeSimone the touching story, he said it’s people like this who make him proud to be an American soldier.

The disabled veteran who learned to walk againArthur Boorman was a paratrooper in the first Gulf War. His service was quite difficult on his body, and he eventually lost much of the use of his back and knees, forced to rely on wheelchairs and canes. Doc-tors told him he would never walk without crutches again. Depressed and immobile, Boorman gained a lot of weight. Desperate, Boorman contacted yoga teachers for fitness help. Most took one look at him and said it wasn’t possible. But wrestler-turned-yogi Diamond Dallas Page accepted Boorman’s condition as a challenge, and really believed in the 47-year-old veteran.

In the video that recounts Boorman’s struggle, you see the portly vet struggle to walk even with the help of canes. You see him attempt and fail at bal-ancing in a yoga move. You see him fall again and again — sometimes even flat on his face — and yet you see him get back on that yoga mat. Over time, Boorman sheds the pounds, gains strength and flexibility, and, eventually, the ability to not only walk without help, but also to sprint — his long hair blowing freely behind him — down the road. “Never underestimate what you can accomplish when you believe in yourself,” reads the script on the video’s close. Grab a tissue and see for yourself.

The homeless veteran heroHe’s known as Staff Sgt. Royal on account of his 10 years in the army. And it was that battlefield train-ing that helped the homeless Seattle veteran save a friend’s life one summer night last year. Royal was just a few blocks away when an argument es-calated outside a bar, and an unidentified man shot the homeless man he was fighting with. The victim ran down the street before collapsing. Royal quickly came to his aid. The bullet had struck the man’s fem-oral artery — a large artery in the thigh that, when ruptured, can cause victims to bleed out. Royal used a belt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. The man was transported to a nearby hospital and was said to be in stable condition. Royal attributed his knowl-edge to his medical training at Ft. Carson in Colo-rado. “I’m just glad I was there,” he said.

One child is holding something that’s been banned in America to protect them. Guess which one. We keep ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ out of schools because of the bottle of wine in her basket. Why not assault weapons? We ban the game dodgeball because it’s viewed as being too violent. Why not assault weapons? We won’t sell Kinder chocolate eggs in the interest of child safety. Why not assault weapons?

Dodge ball was condemned by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education in 2006 and banned in some New Hampshire schools. The Kinder chocolate egg was banned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because the small toy hidden inside could be a choking hazard. Trina Schart Hyman’s version of Little Red Riding Hood was banned by two California schools in 1990 because Little Red Riding Hood is carrying a bottle of wine in her basket, a detail taken directly from the original 17th-century story by Charles Perrault.

When is enough, enough? Where are our priorites? More to come I’m sure...

Coming BackComing Back with Wes Moore.

Coming Back with Wes Moore, a series executive produced by best-selling author and former Army combat veteran Wes Moore, aired in three parts on consecutive Tuesdays beginning May 13, 2014, on PBS (check local listings). The three episode series tells the story of Wes Moore’s search for answers to some of the most difficult questions related to returning from war. Moore’s journey takes him into the personal lives of different soldiers as they attempt to reintegrate back into society, establish new identities, and – for many – find a new mission.

Each episode focuses on a different stage of coming home: “Coming Back” (May 13), “Fitting In” (May 20) and “Moving Forward” (May 27).

Meet Earl JohnsonEarl Johnson brings nation building back home by revitalizing a neighborhood in Baltimore.

Earl Johnson has wowed everyone in Baltimore, including his friend Wes Moore and wife, Zina, with tales of his service. Now, Earl is determined to remake his Baltimore neighborhood – the Oliver – which was the setting of HBO’s “The Wire.” It’s working. Crime is down. But Earl has a devastating secret about his service. Later in the series, we see how Earl manages the revelation of his complicated past and how he pushes forward with his mission.

Stacy’s Recognition

Stacy Pearsall, a former combat photographer, has made it her goal to give recognition and visibility to her fellow veterans by taking their portrait as part of the Veterans Portrait Project.

Star’s Separation

Star Lopez serves as an Air Force JAG attorney at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, while struggling to stay connected with her husband and two-year-old daughter back home.

Brad’s Recurring Nightmare

Brad Farnesley is home from war, but stuck in a Warrior Transition Unit in Fort Knox, Kentucky, where the army sends soldiers deemed medically or psychologically unready for either duty or discharge. He is able to visit his family on weekends, but having to return every Sunday night is a struggle.
