Ground-breaking Longitudinal Study

A rigorous external evaluation found that Girls on the Run is effective in promoting positive youth development and creating lasting change in competence, confidence, connection, character, caring, physical activity and life skills.

Quality Program Delivery

It is our research-based curriculum and national coach training that sets us apart as an exemplar physical activity-based, positive youth development program.

Commitment to Access & Inclusion

We are reducing barriers to participation by developing programming that engages all communities, providing professional development to our staff and board, and fostering a culturally responsive environment across the organization.

Remarkable. (adj.) unusual or special and therefore surprising and worth mentioning (Cambridge Dictionary).

“Worth Mentioning…”At Girls on the Run (GOTR) New Jersey East, we would describe our year as “Remarkable.” We opened the year as the recipient of a PaceSetter award from GOTR National, selected from over 250 Girls on the Run councils as a leader in Strategic Planning and Council Sustainability. In April, I received an Exemplary Leader award in my role as Executive Director from the Morris County Chamber of Commerce, which was quite an honor. We hired two incredible women to our staff - a new Union County Director and a new Development Director, rounding out all of our staffing needs. With these new additions, we truly have a “Dream Team” with all of the right players in place, ready to dedicate the strongest talent and power to our mission. Two of our staff were selected from GOTR National to be among 16 “National Coach Ambassadors” to help strengthen our brand, as well as our volunteer recruiting efforts on the national level. Finally, two of our volunteers were selected as “Remarkable Volunteers” for their dedication and extraordinary service.

“Therefore surprising…”It was also a year to keep reaching and exceeding our goals. In 2018, we saw an unprecedented number of girls request financial-aid to participate in our programs, meeting the needs of over 20% of our participants. Our overall scholarship rate for the year was 18%, a key step towards our goal of reaching a 20% scholarship rate by 2020. We hosted two successful fundraising events, including our first annual Remarkable Breakfast, which helped expand awareness of our programming in our southern counties (Mercer & Burlington). The breakfast was so successful that we’ll be hosting a second one in Essex

County this spring! Girls who participated in our fall programs raised record breaking numbers in our peer-to-peer fundraising initiative, “Run for a Reason” which supports our scholarship initiative. We are also grateful for the many companies, foundations and individuals who joined us as partners to support the limitless potential of girls this year!

“Unusual and special..” This enormous success has actualized because of the efforts of many - those who understand and support our mission and vision to keep “changing the world one girl at a time,” who experience firsthand that the “finish line is just the beginning” and who recognize that our combination of people, purpose and passion are helping us change lives in extraordinary ways. In 2019, we will be working harder than ever to bring our programming to schools in underserved communities, to ensure our programs are accessible and inclusive for all girls in the state of NJ, and to continue creating new partnerships that will elevate our mission. We are ready for miracles in 2019 and we hope the world is ready!

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. And when we bring what is within us out into the world, miracles happen. - Henry Stanley Haskins

With gratitude,

Sydney Davis | Executive Director

Sustained impact…

What makes Girls on the Run different?

The evidence-based curriculum and formal volunteer training distinctly differentiate Girls on the Run from other youth programs. There is no other national girl-only physical activity-based positive youth development program that formally trains its coaches on how to implement the curriculum as intended and to create positive relationships in a caring and inclusive climate. It is this combination, an intentional curriculum and coach training, that makes the positive outcomes we see in the lives of the girls we serve possible.

Transforming Lives We’re more than a running program. We make lasting, transformative change in the lives of girls.

97% of girls learncritical life skills such as helping others, resolving conflict, managing emotions and making intentional decisions that they are using at home, at school and with friends.

“When I was younger, I was diagnosed with Autism and I also had a lisp and I got bullied at school. When I started Girls on

the Run, I felt more comfortable because I knew that the other girls were there to

help me. It inspired me to do more.” - Brianna, age 10
