Theme: The Highwayman, based on the poem by Alfred Noyes.
Day 1 Phonics Words ending in –ent.
Task: Ask your parent to read out the following spellings:
• Frequent
• Ancient
• Confident
• Patient
• Dependent
• Magnificent
Read the words aloud, what do you notice? Even though these words end in -ent
the letters are crushed so they sound like unt when we say them.
It can be tricky to know whether to write -ent or -ant.
EXT: Can you identify any other words that follow this spelling?
Reading Text: ‘The Highwayman’.
Task: Make a note of the words that you don’t know the meaning of and try to
find out what they mean. Write their meanings in your journal.
EXT: Can you think of synonyms for the words you are unsure of now that you
know the meaning?

Task: Choose 10 spellings from the Year 5/6 spelling list and include these in a
short story.
Tip: Think about which words are related.

Task: Re read the text and answer the Vipers questions in your journal.
V = Use the context of the sentence to work out the definition of unbeknownst.
I = Use a thesaurus to find a synonym for harry.
P = When Bess has to struggle, what is the threat that she faces?
E = When she closed her eyes and pulled, what did she do? Explain why she did this.
R = Use a quote to explain how you know the highwayman rode quickly back to
the guards.

Writing Setting Description
Task: Spend a few minutes thinking about what might happen next in your
setting description eg:
• Where will the secret place be?
• What is it going to be like?
• Who are you going to meet?
• What input is that person going to have?
You may want to write notes about these questions to help you in your writing.
Write a piece of dialogue that you would like to appear in the next part of your
writing.
Remember yesterday’s lesson on how to punctuate dialogue.
