PRINCIPALS REPORT

Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School has had another very successful year, with a range of opportunities and programs provided for our students, and professional development for our teachers. We have had the chance to celebrate student success in our annual sports and presentation assemblies, and congratulate those students again for their achievements. Both of these assemblies were well supported by parents and special guests, who shared in our achievements. We also received very positive feedback from special guests and parents on the presentation ceremonies and the work of our students and teachers. Many staff were involved in planning these assemblies, the PDHPE staff for the sports assembly and staff from the whole school for the annual presentation assembly, including Ms Issa, Mr Abbas, Ms Collins, Ms O’Keefe, Mr Mitchell, Ms Wright, Mr Zammit, Ms McDonald-Brown, Ms Azzi, Mr Woollams, Ms Hussain, Mr Omar, Ms Helou, Ms De-Palma, Ms Tsaloukas, Ms Armont, Ms Mazzei, Mrs Tsaloukas, Ms Muljono. Our administration staff led by Mrs Grinyer and Mrs Koellner were also very busy with the letters, programs, certificates, awards and event management. It really was a team effort and a great example of the collegiality of staff at Granville South CAPA High School, who work together on many projects to improve learning experiences for students. Our guest speaker for the sports assembly was former Australian Basketball player Mr Shane Heal. He spoke about expectations in his speech. One point he made was that you cannot expect to be recognised every time you work hard. If you put in your best effort and excel at whatever it is, but consider that you are entitled to recognition, or praise, or selection, then you will not be successful. You will give up. This is an important lesson, as we need to be able to self-reflect and make our own judgements for self-improvement and not rely on external recognition. Of course it is great to be recognised, and this is what we are doing with our formal assemblies, and with the increasing use of our merit reward systems. This year the introduction of ‘gotchas’ for frequent praise of students following our LEARN behaviour expectations has created more opportunity to recognise student success. Our guest speaker for the academic recognition assembly was Ms Shikye Alyce Smith, a performer who grew up in Fairfield. She spoke about her personal story, the struggles and challenges she has faced and her determination to overcome these to reach her goals. She demonstrated the quality we are instilling in our students, a ‘never give up’ attitude. Many of our students have been inspired by her story, understanding that they can reach their goals with determination and an appropriate attitude. Some achievements for 2017 include:

Akosita Masima in year 12 was selected in the Department of Education School Spectacular as a featured vocalist after being involved in the Department of Education talent development program, with her performance recently aired on Channel 7. Akosita performed a number of pieces in her HSC Music examination, including her own compositions, and has been nominated as one of the best performers for the NSW HSC this year. Elizabeth Bunoza in year 12 had her HSC major works nominated by the HSC markers as one of the best Visual Arts projects this year, she attained a Band 6 for Visual Arts, and was our HSC DUX for 2017. This is a great achievement for a student who worked consistently for self-improvement and personal best throughout her schooling. We also had an increase in the number of Band 5 and 6’s compared to previous years, including English Advanced, Music and Visual Arts, and Band 4’s across the whole school. We will provide more detail on HSC success next year. Each year we have seen HSC results improving and look forward to continued success. The Principals Award this year went to year 10 student, Elizabeth Brown. She has been one of the top academic students each year since year 7 and has been publicly recognised for excellence in sport, in community citizenship, and in the CAPA ensemble program. Elizabeth has been involved in many community partnership programs and performance events. For the semester 2 report, Elizabeth was ranked first in the year group for PDHPE, Industrial Technology, and History, and second in the year group for mathematics and geography and science. She attained 100% in the yearly mathematics examination, and industrial technology examination. She is respected by both staff and students and has a school attendance rate of 99%. Well done Elizabeth. In term 1 we were honoured to host a P and C Federation event with the then newly appointed NSW Minister of Education Mr Rob Stokes. Principals and Parents from schools in this region had the chance to speak with Mr Stokes about community issues and strengthening relationships with schools.

We had a delegate of students, government officials and teachers from Yamaguchi City Japan, with our student leaders welcoming and looking after them for a day.

This year, the community organisations that have supported us with projects for parents and students include Cumberland Council, Auburn Youth Centre, Creating Chances, Western Sydney University, UNSW, ABCN, PCYC, Commonwealth Bank, Granville Multicultural Community Centre, Granville Youth Centre, STARTTS, Big Brother/Big Sister, Granville TAFE, Sydney Youth Connect, Woodville Alliance, and Conviction Group. These partnerships enable our students to access a diverse range of programs that we cannot not offer at school and assist them to prepare for life after school. To assist with community connections, this year we welcomed Ms Badoor Saed Al-Deen as our Community Liaison Officer, who organised a well supported and successful Iftar at Granville Youth Centre. Thank you to all the parents and students who supported this event.

Many of our parents also attended a range of community forums, delivered by community partnerships, and assisted my executive team in reviewing school policies and procedures for homework, attendance and behaviour management. I would like to particularly recognise our P and C President Ms Caroline Bunoza for her support as she finishes her time with us this year as President. We look forward to building our P and C and now have an opening for a new P and C President

Our Creative and Performing Arts Ensembles presented their annual performance at the Riverside Theatre and have performed to hundreds of students from local primary schools. Our drama ensembles have also performed in drama festivals. Our teaching, administration and support staff have continued their generous support of public education in 2017, managing many educational programs above and beyond their regular classroom responsibilities. This includes Ms Anastasia Tsaloukas, and Mr Tony Woollams, who assisted behind the scenes for School Spectacular. This year, 2 of our teaching staff were recognised at the annual Australian College of Educators’ World Teachers’ Day dinner. Congratulations to Science teacher, Ms Nguyen and Support unit Head Teacher Ms Armont. We thank them for their service to our school community. I would also like to recognise the contributions of many permanent staff who have moved to other schools this year or will be moving at the start of next year: Ms Collins and Ms Minns from TAS, Mr Chai from CAPA, Ms Nolan from Support, Ms Lombardo from Science, Mr Nagi, Head Teacher Mathematics, Mr Price, Deputy Principal and Mrs Grinyer, Business Manager. Ms Sirianni will be taking leave for a year in 2018. I would also like to thank the many temporary teachers who have assisted us with extended vacancies this year and whose contracts end this year: Ms Dawson in PDHPE, Ms O’keefe in CAPA, Ms Rae in PDHPE and TAS, Mr Zhukov in TAS, Mr Dixit in CAPA, Ms Austin in English, and Ms Sook Hahn in Maths. We have started using the 248 laptops that were delivered at the start of the year. This has made a difference for teaching and learning with more ready and flexible access to technology. We also upgraded our wireless technology to support the introduction of these laptops. The student change room toilets were repaired and upgraded this year, after being closed for many years. This was jointly funded by the Department of Education and the school. It has taken a full year, but we now have approval from the Department of Education for the installation of school funded air-conditioning. This will make a significant difference to the learning environment at Granville South, and will hopefully be completed by next summer. In term 3 we presented a very successful external validation process, where we provided evidence and validation against the NSW Department of Education ‘School Excellence Framework’. We provided evidence for the selective Creative and Performing Arts Ensembles, external partnerships, student support for learning, student wellbeing,

parent/carer engagement, interschool links, staff professional development, and internal analysis and validation.

The Principal school leaders who validated our evidence were particularly impressed with the quality of structures and programs and staff commitment to student learning and wellbeing success. We were also recognised for the collegiality of staff who work across faculties in many teams that focus on continual school improvement.

I wish you all a safe and happy holiday and look forward to another successful year in 2018. Mrs Melissa Johnston Principal

Role of the President

The President is elected at the P&C Association’s Annual General Meeting.

Duties

The President is responsible for:

The successful functioning of the P&C Association meetings

The attainment of the P&C Association’s objectives

Ensuring that the P&C Association takes part in decision-making processes in the school

Fostering fair participation of all members and ensuring that all new members are made to feel welcome

Supporting volunteers

Consistent adherence to the constitution

Acting as the P&C Association’s spokesperson when public statements or actions are needed

Setting up lines of communication with the Principal

Being signatory on the Association’s bank accounts

Chairing meetings, in the absence of the President, one of the Vice-Presidents will chair the meeting or the meeting can elect a chairperson from the members present for that meeting.

Voting

The President is entitled to the same voting rights as any member. However, a President, when in the Chair, often abstains from voting in order to preserve the impartiality of the position.

The person chairing a meeting does not have a casting vote in the event of a tied vote. In the event of a tied vote, the motion remains as status quo. This allows the motion to be put forward at another time.

Sub-committees

The President is automatically a member of all P&C sub-committees. The President should be informed of all sub- committee meetings and decisions, this would occur through written report.

An experienced President gives opportunities to the Vice-Presidents to develop their skills in chairing meetings. Federation recommends that a vice-president be delegated to chair part of a meeting. The training process could also include delegating the responsibility of sub-committee leadership to vice-presidents.

The President also has important responsibilities outside of meetings and is looked to as a leader of the parent community.

The President does not make unilateral decisions and should be mindful that all public statements accurately represent the views of the association.

If you require further information or clarification contact P&C Federation’s Member Services Team [email protected] or 1300 885 982

Role Of The Secretary

The Secretary is responsible for carrying out the administrative tasks related to the decisions of the meetings as resolved. The Secretary prepares, in consultation with the President, all meeting agendas.

The Secretary is required to attend P&C Association meetings and take notes of the discussions in order to produce a set of Minutes for subsequent distribution to members and for receipt, possible amendment and adoption at the following meeting. (In the absence of the Secretary the meeting should elect a person to take the Minutes, this person should be identified in the Minutes.) Further, the position includes receiving and tabling all correspondence as well as writing and dispatching outgoing correspondence as resolved/appropriate. The Secretary also issues notice of all meetings and maintains official records of the P&C Association such as the constitution, by-laws, rules of subcommittees, Incorporation Certificate, ABN details, list of financial (voting) members, Minutes, Attendance book.

Notice of Meeting

P&C Constitution by-laws state that P&C Associations meet on a regular day each month ‘during term time’ at the school. Secretaries may use the P&C newsletter, school newsletter/website, school sign, or other means to promote meetings. Motions on Notice, issues and events to be discussed should be advertised along with names of guest speakers.

Agenda

An agenda is a list of items of business to be considered at a meeting. An Agenda should include the name of the organisation, the type of meeting (e.g. Annual General Meeting, General or special meeting); where the meeting will be held; the date the meeting will be held and time the meeting will commence. An Agenda should contain the following;

1. Welcome and formal opening of meeting

2. Apologies

3. Minutes of the previous meeting (Receipt/Amendments/Adoption)

4. Business arising from the previous meeting Minutes

5. Correspondence

6. Reports:

President’s report

Treasurer’s report

Sub-committee reports

Principal’s report

7. General Business

8. Close

An agenda for Annual General Meetings will be similar to the above with the inclusion of items that only occur at an AGM such as election of Officers and Executive, appointment of the Auditor, membership fees, by-law changes etc.

Role Of The Treasurer

Whilst all P&C members must be mindful of complying with financial accountability requirements, this is the Treasurer’s primary responsibility. The Treasurer receives and deposits monies, maintains records, draws cheques* and presents accounts. The Treasurer also ensures that all funds held and handled by P&C are properly and openly accounted for as the Treasurer is responsible for all funds held in the name of the P&C Association. This includes all P&C Association committees. This does not mean that the Treasurer must undertake the actual bookkeeping themselves but they must ensure that the various sub-committee financial records have been kept to the Treasurer’s satisfaction. The Treasurer is a signatory on the P&C accounts and should not delegate this responsibility.

The Treasurer should encourage members to understand the state of the P&C Association finances. The Treasurer must ensure a case book or books are kept, recording all financial transactions of the P&C Association.

Planning, budgeting and cash flow

A budget is a planning document to estimate the income and expenditure of the organisation for a given period (usually the financial year of the P&C Association). The budget is a statement of intention rather than of fact and can be altered at any time, with due notice given by way of the Agenda, by majority vote, after its initial ratification at a general or special meeting.

Budget estimates are founded on past economic performance, adjusted to anticipate the probable effect any special projects or one-off events. Once the overall budget has been approved, it is helpful to break the budget estimates with actual income and expenditure levels at regular interval throughout the year. This comparison allows the Treasurer to recommend changes to the budget so that it more accurately reflects the real financial situation of the P&C association. These changes, in turn, allow the association to amend its fundraising or expenditure plans for the year. Note: The P&C Association budget is separate from the school’s budget.

Surplus funds

The Treasurer makes recommendations about surplus funds. Surplus funds may be lodged as term deposits with any financial institution that has full trustee status.

Audit

The financial accounts of the P&C Association must be submitted to an independent audit each year. The Treasurer produces a full statement of financial position declaring all funds held in the name of the P&C Association, including those of sub-committees, along with the Secretary who presents the Minute book of the same period to the Auditor. After completion of the audit the financial statements, with all signed certificates appended, are to be presented at the Annual General Meeting for approval and adoption.

Appointing an auditor

You must appoint the auditor at the P&C Association’s Annual General Meeting.

The auditor does not need to be a qualified professional. The auditor must possess appropriate skills and experience in auditing and financial record management together with an appreciation of the issues of probity as they relate to the role of association auditor. The auditor must not have or appear to have any conflict of interest arising, for example, from a personal or business relationship with an Officer of the association and must be prepared to swear that the records are a true and correct statement of the information provided by the Treasurer.

To meet reporting requirements under their Prescribed Constitution, the Treasurer of incorporated associations should ensure that copies of the audited accounts, signed by the President and Treasurer, are forwarded to the Federation of P&C Associations of NSW within one month of the AGM at which they were presented. By undertaking to send the records to P&C Federation the need for incorporated P&C Associations to publicly record their financial statements is fulfilled.

The Treasurer is responsible for the handing over of all financial records to the incoming Treasurer should the Annual General Meeting result in a new Treasurer being elected.

There are many useful conventions which should be followed when dealing in financial matters and the role of the Treasurer will be made easier if all P&C members appreciate and understand that rules and protocols are to be complied with.

Proper accounting procedures have two purposes:

(i) They prevent loss and fraud. You might trust everyone in your association, but accounting procedures will tell you if the wrong thing is happening and where.

(ii) To protect the P&C Association Executive. Good accounting of P&C funds ensures financial propriety.

Cheques

Never sign blank cheques.

Ensure that the P&C Association has resolved to expend the monies before drawing a cheque. No motion, no payment.

Do not make cheques out to cash.

Ensure all cheques are marked ‘Not Negotiable’

Cheque signatories should sight all supporting documents; ensure they are correctly drawn to the payee and there is agreement between the amount on the invoice and the amount on the cheque before signing cheques.

Monitor that payment are approved for appropriate purposes.

Two members of the same family should not, as a general rule, act as signatories.

Where possible, cheque signatories should not counter-sign a cheque drawn in their favour. The school Principal should not be a signatory to P&C bank accounts.

Employees of the association should not be a signatory to the association or sub-committee bank accounts.

All accounts should be paid by cheque, expect for small payments from petty cash. Support all payments with invoices, receipts or dockets.

Mark all paid invoices with a “paid” stamp and cheque number.

Receipts

Issues receipts in sequential date order as per takings.

Ensure two independent people are responsible for collecting and counting money. Likewise, at the end of the collection period, counting should occur in the company of at least two members and the amount verified, in writing, by each member involved in the count.

Issue receipts to people responsible for collecting and counting money.

Banking

Check that the amount banked corresponds with the receipt totals.

Bank money daily or secure in a fireproof safe if you are not able to bank on the day. (Your cash may not be insured if you do not make an effort to secure it adequately.)

Cash books (computerised bookkeeping package or manual)

Keep cash books up to date. The cash book should be totalled and balanced at the end of each month. Match the sequence of entries in the cash book with the sequence of receipts and cheque payments.

Reporting

The Treasurer must present a report in the form of an income and expenditure statement together with a reconciled bank statement for each and every P&C meeting. Where a Treasurer is not able to attend a meeting the Treasurer’s Report should be provided to the President prior to the meeting for tabling to the members.

The final artworks Year 12 student Elizabeth Bunoza were nominated for inclusion in ARTEXPRESS, an

annual series of exhibitions of exemplary artworks created by New South Wales visual arts students for the

Higher School Certificate. Entitled "Duality", Elizabeth's Visual Arts Graphic Design Body of Work selected

from over 9000 submissions from students all across of New South Wales as an outstanding example of

artmaking practice and design. Under the guidance of Ms Wright, Elizabeth worked diligently throughout

the course to develop and refine her work and deserves to be incredibly proud of her achievement,

attaining a Band 6 for Visual Arts in the Higher School Certificate. Elizabeth is an extremely gifted visual

artist and is currently undertaking interviews for admission to internationally recognised Art and Design

ENSEMBLES:

Our CAPA Superstars have featured in a range of performances held across Sydney, representing Granville

South CAPA High School at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA), the Seymour Centre, as Featured

Artists at Schools Spectacular, and at Parramatta’s Riverside Theatre with our very own Creative and

Performing Arts Showcase. CAPA students have also begun the journey of truly engaging in the creative

arts community across Sydney with excursions, and artist’s workshops, held at The Opera House, Bondi

Beach with Sculptures by the Sea, City Recital Hall Angel Place, Fox Studios, the NSW Art Gallery, Belvoir

Street Theatre, and upstairs in B-block with the murals created visible for all to see. Students have

performed for international visitors, executive visitors, and even members of parliament. All of this would

not have been possible without the outstanding dedication, enthusiasm and expertise of our CAPA

Ensembles Teachers throughout all of 2017.

Each of our CAPA Ensembles students deserves to be incredibly proud of their achievements in 2017 with

special congratulations to the following students, as recipients of the Excellence and Encouragement

Awards in our 5 CAPA Ensembles classes. The dedication, enthusiasm, and energy they demonstrate as

CAPA Superstars is second to none, with the students receiving the Excellence Award acting as a creative

leader, providing inspiration to the rest of their Ensemble.

2018 will looks to be another amazing year for our CAPA Ensembles classes. Big things are coming, watch

this space!

FRENCH: le français

Year 7 students are to be commended for their hard work throughout the year. They have been learning

“survival French”: greetings and introductions, while discovering that French is not just spoken in France.

Year 7 created wonderful presentations on the many French-speaking countries (la francophonie) around

the world, which they shared with their classmates. Overall, 17 Francophone countries were researched

and presented. Bravo!!

In Terms 2 and 3, students continued to build their conversational French by learning to talk about

themselves, their likes, dislikes and describe their family and others. We have been doing this by listening

to French songs and authentic French dialogues. To apply the French descriptive language they have been

learning, each student chose a French celebrity or national hero for a major research project and created

interesting and informative presentations in both English and French. Students explored and shared

information across a range of fields: painters, artists, singers, musicians, actors, authors and sporting

heroes.

More recently students have been learning about French history and French cuisine while testing their

knowledge through class competitions, using Kahoot! online quizzes. Students have just completed a

French cooking ‘Master Chef Invention Test’ and created original gaufres (waffle) desserts, followed by lots

of eating – bon appétit! Students were fortunate to have the support of several teachers while ‘creating’

their desserts, as well as teachers who were ‘Official Tasters’ and Judges of the competition. We would like

to thank Ms Sharma, Miss Collins and Mrs Tsaloukas, as well as the TAS faculty for all their support. This

has allowed students to celebrate what has been a very productive and creative first year of French and

French culture.
