Living in St. LouisKnown as the “Gateway City,” St. Louis is rich in American history. You’ll see this symbolized by the giant stainless steel Gateway Arch, standing 192 meters high on the banks of the Mississippi River. Located in the heart of the city, Saint Louis University offers an urban campus, just steps away from the arts and entertainment district.

Local KnowledgeFounded by the French in 1764, St. Louis is one

of the largest and most historically significant

cities in the Midwest. St. Louis is a hub for big

business, for both Fortune 500 and privately

held companies, including Boeing, Centene,

Emerson, Enterprise and Monsanto.

In addition, St. Louis is emerging as one of

the nation’s leading areas for high-tech

entrepreneurs and information technology

startups. Forbes, The Wall Street Journal and

CNBC all praised the Gateway City’s start-up

scene adding to the growing sector.

Active LifestyleWith more than 100 parks in the city, St. Louis

offers an active city lifestyle. From biking and

running, to walking and skateboarding, you will

find there is no shortage of activities within

the city.

AttractionsThere are more free attractions than any place

outside of Washington, DC. Forest Park is larger

than New York City’s Central Park and contains

the St. Louis Zoo, art museum, science center

and history museum. Dozens of unique shops

and restaurants also contribute to St. Louis’

unique charm and multicultural flair.

St. Louis is noted for being one of the nation’s

best sports cities. Join residents and cheer for

the 11-time World Series champion St. Louis

Cardinals of Major League Baseball and the St.

Louis Blues of the National Hockey League.

Living in Madrid

The vibrant capital of Spain, Madrid, has a population of more than six

million and is home to some of the world’s finest museums, palaces

and monuments. Boutiques, tapas restaurants and dance clubs crowd

together in what once used to be medieval alleyways.

You can cheer on the world’s top soccer teams one day and wander

through open air markets the next. Madrid’s airport—one of the largest in

the world—and Spain’s extensive railway system make traveling between

European cities easy. Barcelona is only a three-hour train ride away while

a flight from Madrid to Paris takes just two hours.

Housing and DiningSaint Louis University considers the residential experience an integral part of your total education. Students who live on campus often have better grades, meet more friends and join more activities than those who live off campus.

All first-year and second-year undergraduate students are required to live on campus for four semesters at Saint Louis University.

On-Campus ExperienceBy living on Campus, you’re not only supported

in your academic pursuits, but you’ll also be

challenged to grow as an individual. Making

friends is vital to your success, so we’ve

designed our residential communities to ensure

you have a strong support network around you

at all times.

Residence HallsThe on-campus residence halls are the best

place to call home at SLU. Enjoy the convenience

of living close to classrooms, dining halls,

recreation facilities and the library—the SLU

campus is an ideal place to live, learn and grow.

Our residence life offers nine residence halls–

two of which have been completed in the last

two years–and four apartment complexes. Your

room comes with central air conditioning, a bed,

a desk, a dresser, a wardrobe and a semi-private

bathroom. All buildings have a community

laundry room, a community kitchen, 24-hour

security desk, study lounges, a chapel and bike

storage outside the building.

SLU-Madrid HousingThere is no university housing requirement when

you choose to study at the SLU-Madrid Campus.

Staff can assist you with housing options if

you want to live with a host family or in an off-

campus student residence. Or, if you prefer, you

can find your own accommodation in the city.

eat in the residence hall or savor all the city

has to offer, Saint Louis University and the

surrounding neighborhoods have everything

you could want. Vegan, vegetarian, halal and

gluten-free options are easily accessible from

either the 22 on-campus or the countless

number of off-campus dining facilities.

Meal PlansAll students living in campus housing,

regardless of current course load, are required

to have a meal plan each semester. You will

sign up for your meal plan when you sign up

for housing. This meal plan will be preloaded

onto your SLU Card.

Academic English | 37

What You’ll Learn• Understand US values in an academic setting

• Present spoken and written ideas accurately and effectively in English

• Write research papers with proper use of citations and references

• Read, understand and critically evaluate academic texts

• Understand and use vocabulary common to academic disciplines

• Take useful and accurate notes in academic lectures and presentations

Content-Based InstructionThe Academic English program uses content-based instruction (CBI), which helps students learn

English while they study academic topics. Students will explore American culture, contemporary

American issues, and other topics that will build the background knowledge and the study skills

students need for success in their Pathway content classes and in their degree programs.

University and Community EngagementAcademic English students begin making connections with Americans right away. The

International Partners Program matches American students in Saint Louis University's Honors

Program with Academic English students for conversation practice and cultural exchange.

American student tutors in the English Language Center help Academic English students practice

their speaking, writing, and study skills. In English through Service classes, students and teachers

volunteer at St. Louis area schools, churches, and aid centers, practicing English while they help

meet Saint Louis University's goal of serving others.

Academic EnglishThe Academic English program at INTO SLU will help prepare you for university study in the US. You will receive high-quality English language instruction and the academic skills to succeed at SLU.
