THE NATHAN’S BARN PROJECTSAVING THE CHROBAK BARN

The original 40’x60’ New England style barn, built by Nathan Waters around 1840, was lost 100 years later during the Hurricane of 1938. At that time, Walter Waters, owned the property and used it as a summer home. The only animals on premises were 2 calves and 1 horse.

The replacement building, built around 1940 by Sidney Hutchinson, was a barn/garage combination of more modest size, constructed atop the existing granite walls and foundation stones quarried on site. It was necessary to take down that building in recent years. We were able to save the granite slabs and an original barn beam.

Waters Farm was approached by David Stevenson of D M Stevenson Housewright, to save and preserve the Chrobak Barn, located in West Sutton a few miles from the Farm. Stevenson had previously moved the Darling Barn from Darling Lane in the Village of Manchaug and reconstructed it at Waters Farm.

The beautiful New England style barn from the Chrobak property is strikingly similar to the original Na-than’s Barn. Believed to be constructed around 1860, the building was a good candidate to be moved.

NATHAN’S BARN PROJECT STATUSCurrently the Chrobak Barn has been disassembled and the boards and beams are in storage awaiting start of reassembly and reconstruction on the foundation here on the Farm sometime in 2018.

THE WATERS FARM STORYThe story of Waters Farm is one that dates back over 250 years to 1757. It is a story of a town founded in 1704 and settled in 1716 that once extended far beyond it’s cur-rent borders. It is a story of a new nation struggling through the early stages of forming an identity unique in the world. And it is a story of a family with simple beginnings who went on through many generations to do great things.

Stephen Waters constructed the main house at Waters Farm in 1757. Two additions were added in the early 1800’s. Elec-tricity came to the house in 1930, and the fi rst telephone was installed in 1935. Family history indicates that the house has never been any other color than red. The Sutton Beauty Apple was created here, and the farm is believed to be the site of the fi rst commercial apple production in the country.

But the story of this place does not end with that one family. With wisdom and generosity the last heir, Dorothea Waters Moran, envisioned more for this house than she alone could provide...a living, breathing, vibrant, motivational, educa-tional, inspirational destination for generations to come.

In 1974, Dorothea Waters Moran conveyed to the Town of Sutton for stewardship her ancestral home including contents and records.

This is truly a rare view of early American life in a wonderful house that will be kept intact for future generations.

Waters Farm Preservation Inc., a non-profi t organization, was formed to ensure the continued preservation of this historic landmark. This organization is run entirely by volun-teers, who donate their time and energy to preserving the legacy of Waters Farm for all to enjoy. All the money raised from our various events and any contributions received are used solely to preserve and enhance the Farm. If you are interested in helping us, please see our volunteer section on our web site www.watersfarm.com.
