Wednesday June 6, 2018 From Sue Parent Q & A Panel Discussion - The Technology Balancing Act Please note: this has been cancelled Over the last four weeks parents and interested community members have been invited to submit any questions or comments on the topic of technology use at home and at school and encouraged to come along to a Q & A panel discussion next week on Tuesday evening. It has been interesting to note that the vast majority of the questions and comments submitted to date are connected to the use and management of devices at home. Unfortunately we have had insufficient numbers to warrant conducting the session. We will be using the Tech Talk with Timsection of the newsletter to respond to the questions that had been submitted by parents and continue to provide support and advice to parents to assist in managing device use at home. I am sincerely grateful to those parents who indicated their interest and intention to attend on Tuesday and to Tim Bernau who has devoted considerable time to the organisation and preparation for this session, setting up the link to receive questions and comments and in particular, securing the services of Lee Watanabe Crockett. Parent Representative and ParentsAssociation Meeting: Friday 22 June at 3pm in the staffroom Class level reps and any interested parents are warmly invited to attend a meeting on Friday 22 June at 3pm in the staffroom. Soiree Last week we enjoyed our first soiree for 2018 at the Sandringham Secondary College theatre. We were treated to some delightful musical performances from our children. It is always exciting to see vocal duets where the children master their nerves and sing together to the packed audience. Another highlight for me is to watch children play on the grand piano, sometimes with some level of trepidation, simply because of its size, a few of our younger students cannot reach the pedals but still manage to impress the audience. Many of our children genuinely have a passion for music and relish the opportunity to perform in public. Others can have the passion but need to play as a form of expression; to see a child lose themselves in the moment is joyful; fortunately for us, there were many moments like this during the soiree. We have very talented singers in Hampton Harmonies, this is an auditioned choir who love a challenge and relish the opportunity to sing in public. I extend congratulations to our many budding musicians who performed proudly, displaying considerable talent, growing confidence and a strong commitment to their music.

Displaying our School Norms Congratulations go to Amber Sarman Gozel from 3C and Melissa Sarman Gozel from 4C for displaying honesty, integrity and citizenship earlier this week. They were leaving the school grounds recently and came across an envelope just outside the school. Sensing that this might be important, they handed in the envelope to the school office. The envelope contained some important information and some money. Kirsty in the office is working on finding the intended recipient for the mail. Sue Knight Principal

Tech Talk with Tim This week's edition focuses on the big announcement made by Apple overnight at the Worldwide Developer Conference. The article below provides an excellent summary of the new parental controls available in the latest iOS update. I am particularly excited about the potential of the 'Downtime' tool for managing device use at home. Does your child ever tell you that they need access to their iPad to do homework but you can sense there might be ulterior motives? This tool allows you to restrict access to specific apps and remove any possible distractions, whilst continuing to provide access to apps required to complete a school task. I look forward to chatting to parents in the coming weeks about these tools and whether they have assisted in managing device use at home.

Apple unveils new screen time controls for children

Sarah Perez https://techcrunch.com/2018/06/04/apple-unveils-new-screen-time-controls-for-children/>

Apple this morning announced a new set of parental controls for iOS devices at its WorldWide Developer Conference this morning in San Jose. The company had already acknowledged back in January that it had new, more robust parental control features in the works, following an open letter posted by two large Apple shareholder groups, Jana Partners LLC and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System. The letter from the influential, activist shareholders mentioned recent research from child development experts whose studies have found links between the use of electronic devices by kids, and negative effects on concentration, emotional health, sleep and empathy. One study even found a link between time spent on devices and teen suicide, with teens who spent three or more hours per day on devices at higher risk than those who used them for an hour or less. In addition, the letter argued that managing children’s device usage isn’t just the parents’ responsibility alone – they also need help from tech companies on the matter. The shareholders suggested Apple task an executive to focus on these digital wellbeing features aimed at children and parents, and include new setup menus in Apple software that better allow parents to tailor the functionality of the device to the child’s specific ages. Apple responded by saying updated parental controls were coming, and it rolled out a “Families” page on its website with educational materials for parents.

Page 4: HPS Family Sunday Afternoon at the Movies · development experts whose studies have found links between the use of electronic devices by kids, and negative effects on concentration,

The company today unveiled for the first time what these new controls would look like, and how they work. Now, there’s a new weekly activity report for parents and kids that shows how much time is spent using the device and the apps, and parents will have the option of creating screen time allowances for kids.

Another “Downtime” option will help kids to unplug, and parents can limit app usage by category or individual whitelisted apps. That way, parents can make sure critical apps will still work even during downtime, like the Phone app, or those that are educational, like Books.

Page 5: HPS Family Sunday Afternoon at the Movies · development experts whose studies have found links between the use of electronic devices by kids, and negative effects on concentration,

During Downtime, notifications from apps aren’t displayed, and a badge appears on apps so kids know they can’t currently be used. Another Screen Time limit lets parents block off time when the device can’t be used at all, like around bedtime. This feature works with Family Sharing. Currently, Apple’s existing set of parental controls on iOS (found under General –> Restrictions) in iOS takes an all-or-nothing approach, where parents toggle on or off Apple’s own apps, configure which apps, music, books, and videos can see based on their ratings. They can also configure various privacy settings related to things like location sharing, advertising, speech recognition, and many others. And parents can configure what the child can or cannot do on the device – like download apps or disable “Do Not Disturb While Driving,” for example. Meanwhile, other tech companies’ parental control systems have evolved to include more functionality related to screen time. Amazon, for example, offers controls that allow parents to set educational goals that must be met before games can be played, and allows for setting time limits and filtering of content by age. Google’s Family Link, which publicly launched last fall, also focuses on screen time settings. With the new controls, Apple is playing catch up a bit to an industry that had already made screen time and age filters a key focus. But it’s still an important step, given Apple’s power to set trends. The addition of the new parental controls is part of Apple’s larger focus on digital wellness, which includes the arrival of new time management features for adults, as well, arriving in iOS 12. It’s that time of the year to unleash your imagination!! The JSC are excited to announce

this term’s fundraiser:

FANTASY DAY!

On Monday 25th June, Hampton Primary School will be having a fantasy themed dress up day! We are asking all students to bring a gold coin donation to

support our World Vision sponsor child Belinda Chewe. The students decided that any remaining money should be put towards refurbishing the bike shed.

So get creative and come to school with your best fantasy costume or accessory. Think unicorns, book characters, dragons, fairies etc… It can be anything!

My name is Belinda Chewe and I am now 13 years old. I live in the Mweru community in Africa. Currently, I am in secondary school studying grade 9.

World Vision community workers have repeatedly visited me to monitor my well-being. Belinda’s favourite subjects are history and mathematics. She

starts her day by washing clothes and in the future she wants to be a nurse. Thank you for your partnership in helping me and other children to have better

lives and futures.

Pupil Free Days 2018

Monday 16 July Friday 14 December

G6 Football Match Last weekend 30 year 6 boys travelled from Perth to play against our year 6 Hampton Rovers boys. There were also some St Mary’s and other schools in our team. I was lucky enough to be able to attend and watch our boys. Their skill was amazing and they read the play beautifully, but more importantly their sportsmanship was wonderful to observe. Although they won 97 to 3 points they were very humble and gracious to the other team. Congratulations boys! I hear that it may have a reciprocal tour next year. The tour was partially organised by a past teacher from HPS (2003) Cally Davidson who now lives in Perth and the Brayshaw family. Thanks for arranging a great opportunity for both teams.
