Hugo Israel – 24 Hours in Lisbonon Dec 1, 2010 in 24 hours in... | No Comments

Hugo Israel takes us on a whistle-stop tour of the Pop UP Festival, whose theme is “UrbanNomads”. In the breaks in between, we pause for breath in various gardens and viewpoints, rooms with a view over the city and alternative cafés. The day ends with a look at the spokenword project in Kapital.

Hugo Israel’s CV boasts experience at the Euro RSCG advertising agency and the Ministry of ForeignAffairs press office. However, the president of the Pop Up Association’s expertise actually lies in the

fields of photography, performance and installation. In 2008, using the pseudonym Hugo Villier, hepublished the book of poetry entitled Amor ah tona. Last year, he made his debut as a mentor andcurator artist of the Lisbon Pop Up project. In 2010, he presented the installation “Prato do dia:

Burnout”, as part of the Chiado After Work initiative. This time round, he took a day out of his diaryto give us a guided tour to the Pop Up Festival – Urban Nomads, which takes place on 11th

December.

Garden of Delights

“When at home I plump for cereals with yoghurts and scrambled eggs, but if I have breakfast out, I go

to the Torel pavement café, in the garden of the same name for orange juice and buttered toast.”

Artistic partnerships

“Next, we go to Pavilhão 27, in Lisbon’s Psychiatric Hospital Centre, currently run by P28 – Creativeand Artistic Development Association and where we can see a collective exhibition which is part of the Pop Up festival, which focuses on urban art, design and illustration. Some of the work was done inconjunction with artist who are patients at the hospital.”

Test tubes

“The four floors of the Palácio de Santa Catarina – the Pop Up Laboratory – are replete with projects

by Portuguese and foreign artists, like Manuel Caeiro, Bela Silva and Andreia Spilsgar. Highlightsinclude The Dolls of Lisbon, which has handmade dolls inspired by Zapatista figures. These aresimple objects, made by a member of the Antagonists Art Movement community, and thenpersonalised by artists from various parts of the world. Aside from the exhibition, this project, which

focuses on do-it-yourself, will develop other artistic dynamics.”

“We have lunch at Fábulas, which has been the HQ of Pop Up. The place is unconventional, both in

terms of food and decor – it’s a gallery-café in Chiado which serves cuscus, burritos, omelettes, saladsand toasted sandwiches among the various old sewing machine and vintage items dotted around theplace.”

And more cakes…

“I have coffee at Quarto com Vista, the official cafeteria of CoworkLisboa, a space shared by a

variety of freelancers. This room with a view over the 25 de Abril bridge has fantastic homemadecakes, especially the orange and carrot one, which is my fave. On our way out, we have time to take alook at the Pedro Zamith mural on the festival theme, Urban Nomads.”

Creative snacking

Conservation makes us peckish and we have a bite to eat at the mythical Nimas cinema. Try a cupcake with a milky coffee, which are perfect for wintry afternoons. On 9th December audiences canenjoy the film Das Sopas Campell ao Mashup de Marcas, from the Clube de Criativos de Portugal,

which tells the story of subversion in advertising. The next day, there are three short films by PauloFurtado, the alter-ego of the Legendary Tiger Man.”

Petisco palaver

“At lunchtime, it’s off to Madragoa to Petiscaria Ideal. Although they don’t accept reservations, youcan eat ‘til late. The champagne sangria with apple goes great with the grilled tuna with sweet potato. The scallops are also top notch. Finish off with the world’s best chocolate mousse. The place has areally laid back feel with lots of little nooks and crannies and great service.”
