K-rimes had the dream season in 2010 winning his second World Championship and his first World Cup Series title. He went into 2011 as the favorite to repeat but a severe leg injury sustained in a pre-season race could sideline him for the season.

Switzer always races with speed and style. The likeable skater from Canada is always a contender. P-Swiss earned his second career World Cup victory in Padova last year. With Reimer on the sidelines, he could dominate.

Christoph just seems to get better with age. Last year he earned his first World Cup victory in Kozakov with a lightning fast qualifying run. The big rider from Switzerland was a contender at each World Cup he entered. Expect the same in 2011.

Dalua has proven himself as South America’s top downhill skater. In the past he was always fast on the straight, fast courses but recently he’s also been a contender in the technical races. Silva is focused on the World Championship in Teutonia.

Scoot had his first ever winless season in 2010. The 2008 World Cup Series Champion and World Champion is hoping to get back to his winning ways. He made some key equipment changes during the off season in an effort to bolster his chances.

“The American Dream” only competed in four World Cup events in 2010 yet he was always a contender. He finished second in Australia and in the top 10 at all the rest. Kelly is still looking for his first World Cup win. A win could definitely happen in 2011.

Ramon is another of those skaters still looking for their first World Cup victory. The 2008 slalom World Champ came close qualifying number one in Italy and making it to the finals only to crash out. A victory could come for him in Germany or Italy.

After winning the 2009 Cup Series, Mischo had a disasterous 2010 start averaging 28th place in his first four races. He came roaring back in the final three races with two podiums and the top qualifying spot in Australia. He’s hungry for success in 2011.

KYLE MARTIN

Siegrist is a verteran racer who knows how to hang it out and push when a big race is on the line. His three World Championships (2004, 2006, 2007) are proof of that. He’s still looking to win that elusive World Cup Series Championship.

It’s hard to believe how long Zietsman’s been racing. He finsihed 2nd at Red Bull DHX way back in 2002. Mike rarely travels outside of South Africa anymore but he’s still very fast. He won Hot Heels Africa in 2010 against a strong field of IGSA regulars.

If Zak ever decided to travel, he’d certainly make a strong run for the Series Championship. Instead he concentrates on the North American rounds where he’s always a contender. Maytum is the defending Maryhill Champ and a Calgary victory is in his sights.

Chaput is a skateboarding legend who was a freestyle World Champ in the 70’s and the IGSA’s 1st DH Skateboarding World Cup Series Champ in 2001. His Abec 11 wheels are the performance benchmark for the industry. Can he win one more?

Spencer is one of the World’s best Junior racers who will be making his presence known in the Open ranks for years to come. His first big international victory came last summer in Argonnay, France in the Junior II class. Keep an eye on Spencer!

At just 17 years old, Wolfgang is the Eh-Teams go-to guy when it comes to the Junior II Category. Coleman will be the youngest rider on the circuit with a pro model under his feet as he races all season in the fastest growing class in the World.

If last year’s performance is any sort of warning, this season is set to be a strong year for “The Prince”. Dillon’s calculated skill on the race track will surely cause insecurity for those lined up beside him as he travels in search of the World Cup Title in 2011.

Kyle Martin is an absolute shredder who’s humble skills on the race track are no match for his globally recognized freeride skills. If you’re lucky enough to see him in action, sit back, relax and be inspired by what he’s discovered is possible on a skateboard.

Brianne Davies has decided to retire from racing at the end of the 2010 season. She went out on top by winning her third consecutive IGSA World Championship (2008, 2009, 2010) and her second IGSA World Cup Series Championship (2008, 2010). During Brianne’s career she continually broke down barriers in the male dominated sport. She pushed downhill skateboarding to the limit, often competing in the Open Class and beating many well known male competitors in head to head action. With a total of 10 World Cup race wins, Brianne holds the IGSA record for most downhill skateboarding victories male or female. Brianne still intends on doing lots of freeriding while pursuing a career in firefighting. She will be missed at the race track by many.

Dominique had a strong season in 2010 highlighted by a second place finish in Brazil. At that event she also set the Official IGSA Women’s Downhill Skate-boarding Speed Record at 100.40 km/h (62.39 mph). Expect a great year from Dominique.

Marie burst onto the scene last year by scoring World Cup victories in Italy and the Czech Republic last year. She follows in the foot steps of pioneering French downhill racer Angelina Nobre. She’ll be looking for more victories in 2011.

Entering her 5th race season, “Skatie Katie” will undoubtedly be a crowd favorite as she makes her first attempt at capturing an IGSA World Cup Title in 2011. Katie favors fast, technical courses where her light weight is an advantage.

After winning the World Cup Series title in 2009, Dasha only ran a limited schedule last year. Dasha is equally at home on the tight tecnhical courses and the fast, straight ones. Born in the Ukraine, Dasha will be battling for victory in every race she enteres.

Lenka’s best finish in 2010 was a second at the Padova Grand Prix. She made steady progress last season and will be looking for more podium finishes and her first win in 2011. Lenka’s most at home on the tight, technical tracks.

BRIANNE DAVIES RETIRES FROM RACING1


On September 30, 2010, Mischo Erban shattered his own IGSA Downhill Skateboarding World Speed Record. He reached a velocity of 130.08 km/h (80.83 mph) at a secret location in northern Colorado. This speed shat-tered the previous IGSA record of 113.02 km/h (70.23 mph), which Erban set in 2009.

27-year old Erban, who lives in Vernon, BC, Canada, was the 2009 IGSA World Cup Series Champion, and he has won six World Cup races in his career. That leaves him tied for first place on the all-time victory list with Kevin Reimer, who was the IGSA World Cup Series Champion in 2010 and the IGSA World Champion in 2009 and 2010.

Erban set the new Speed Record while testing wheel compounds and hubs for his sponsor, Seismic Skate Systems. In attendance were representatives from Seismic and AEND Industries (which manufactures Seis-mic wheels), along with a group of Engineering students from Colorado State University and Gary Fluitt, who served as the Official IGSA Representative. The IGSA’s state-of-the-art Tag Heuer timing system was used to record Erban’s speed through a 100-foot speed trap. IGSA Official Gary Fluitt verified (and filmed) the record.

“Honestly, we never thought we would hit 130 km/hr.” said Erban. “It was an exploratory effort that surprised us all!”

The location has been kept secret to discourage others from riding the road in uncontrolled conditions without proper safety precautions in place.

Sets a New Official IGSA World Speed Record!

Teolo, Italy is the host city of the Padova Grand Prix located about 100 km west of Venice. The track has two distinctly different parts with a straight, fast upper half, and a tight, twisty lower half. Skaters with slalom racing experience have figured out that they can “pump” their boards to generate more speed when exiting the tight hairpins. Last year, former slalom World Champion Ramon Konigshausen dominated qualifying and the race by using the “pump” to his perfection. Unfortunately for Ramon, he let victory slip from his grasp when he crashed in the final. Patrick Switzer took full advantage of Konigshausen’s mistake to earn his second career World Cup win. Ramon will be seeking redemption in 2011.

The Maryhill Festival of Speed returns for its’ fifth running in 2011. The race course always encourages close, hard racing. Zak Maytum won the 2010 event in a close duel over Kevin Reimer. With Reimer out of action due to an injury, it will be interesting to see who will be putting the pressure on Maytum. Two-time winner Scoot Smith will definitely be a contender. Mischo Erban and James Kelly have both finished second here previously and will be looking to win North America‘s most prestigious downhill race. Abec 11 has stepped up as the title sponsor and the total prize purse increased to $10,000. Maryhill isn’t the most difficult course in the world to ride, but finding a fast line, posessing good drafting skills strong physical endurance are the keys to success.

Kozakov has quickly gained the reputation as the best race in Europe. The track is a supreme test for even the most accom-plished riders with its’ incredible combination of both tight, technical corners, fast sweepers and high-speed straights. Christoph Batt earned his first World Cup victory last year by setting the fastest qualifying time and then watching the rain wash out the rest of the weekend. Batt will go into the race as the favorite but expect strong challenges from Switzer, Shapiera, Chapman, Siegrist and espe-cially Erban who would like nothing more than to win a World Cup in his native Czech Republic.

INSUL CUP 2011

After hosting a very successful 2010 European Championship, the Insul Cup is back as a World Cup in 2011. The track is located in the Eifel Mountains of Western Germany not far from the famed Nurbur-gring. It features five hairpin corners that challenge even the most technically savvy riders. Martin Siegrist won a hard fought Final over Christoph Batt, Ramon Konigshausen and Mischo Erban last year. Expect another dog fight between those four and many others in 2011. This is a race that is very difficult to pick a favorite. One of the local German skaters like Boris Schinke or Alex Dietz could easily make it to the finals and pull off a surprise victory.

The Winsport Canada Cup is an all new event being run on the access road of the bobsled run at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. The track itself is wide smooth and challenging with a series of sweeping and hairpin corners linked by short straights. A chairlift will whisk the riders to the top efficiently so no transport buses will be required. The competitors will be racing for their share of a $12,000 purse making the Canada Cup one of the richest of the year. Spectators will be able to catch all the action up and down the course on a series of big screens ensuring non-stop action. The whole event will have a festival atmosphere with live bands, DJ’s, beer gardens and a demo village making it one of the world’s best gravity sports events.

Prior to 2010, the only IGSA sanctioned events held in South America took place in Brazil. That all changed last year with the debut of the Hotel los Portales Tarma South American Championship held in the city of Tarma, Peru. Located high in the Andes Mountains at an elevation of approximately 3000m (9850’), the track and the event were an immediate hit with over 60 competitors racing in the inaugural event . For 2011 the event the has gained World Cup status and the name has been changed to the Copa de los Andes. With a year of experience, the organizers are ready for the world to descend on the “Pearl of the Andes.” Last year Douglas Silva won a tough battle over Kevin Reimer in the final. Expect more of the same when most of the IGSA’s top competitors race it out in the final event before the World Championships.

Teutonia is the fastest gravity sports race track in the world and one that instills fear in competitors unlike any other. The track has gradual corners in the upper section where the competitors continually accelerate. At the big mid track sweeper, they’re doing about 90km/h (53 mph). From this point, the bottom drops out as the grade increses to over 10%. The skateboards accel-erate to speeds in excess of 115 km/h (72 mph) and the luges 130 km/h (81 mph) heading to the finish. The pavement has slight ripples which are ampli-fied by the high speeds adding to the craziness that is Teutonia. Three-time winner Kevin Reimer describes it as a straight, technical hill. All the top competitors will be converging on Teutonia for the 10th IGSA World Champi-onships. It promises to be a high speed duel from start to finish.

Newton’s Nation in Bathurst had originally been slated to host an IGSA World Cup event for the fourth time in 2011. The mega festival in Bathurst was hurt by poor attendance due to less than ideal scheduling. The organizers feel a Fall date will prove to be much more attractive so students from the nearby university will be able to attend. The organizers have decided to take a one-year hiatus with Newton’s Nation returning in April 2012. The Australian Skateboard Racing Association (ASRA) has stepped in to save the day. Wollongong, which is a coastal city 1.5 hrs south of Sydney will play host to the Mount Keira Challenge. It's a twisty course with fast sweeping corners and enough gradient and natural obstacles to keep it interesting for every-one. This event is still awaiting final confirmation as we go to press.

Hot Heels Africa returns for the eighth consecutive year as the IGSA World Cup Series Finale. The event is held in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve near Cape Town. Summer is just beginning in the Southern Hemisphere during early December so those who live in colder climates always enjoy the trip to Cape Town. Throughout the years many championships have been decided in Kogelberg. Local Mike Zietsman showed he still knows how to reach the top of the podium by winning last year. Ramon Konig-shausen equaled his career best performance by finishing second while Mischo Erban continued his late season surge by finishing third. With the addition of the fifth race to each racers points total, expect the 2011 World Cup Series to be decided in South Africa. The South African Gravity Sports Association (SAGRA) always puts on a great show in Kogelberg.

GRAVITY SPORTS EXPLAINED

Competitors stand upright on longboards and ride in an aerodynamic “tuck” position at speeds in excess of 110 km/h (68 mph). Downhill Skateboarding is also known as “Speedboarding” and “Stand up”. The skater’s hands are used as outriggers to help maintain balance and stability. Hard plastic pucks are attached to the gloves so the hands can be placed on the pavement incur-ring only minimal friction. Braking is accomplished by either dragging a foot on the ground, or pitching the skateboard sideways in a controlled slide. Decks are typically 34”- 48” in length and constructed from materials including wood, carbon �ber, Kevlar, �berglass, lightnweight metals and structural foam. Racing trucks are typically machined or cast aluminum. Wheels are typically 70-90mm in diameter and made from polyure-thane to provide low rolling resistance, vibration dampening and traction.

After �rst being pioneered in the 1970’s at the Signal Hill Downhill skateboard race, “Laydown” remained underground for nearly two decades, ESPN adopted the sport for the inaugural 1995 X Games and renamed it “Street Luge.” Competitors lay in the supine position and control the oversize skateboard by leaning their bodies. Braking is accomplished by dragging the shoe soles on the pavement. Street luge’s are highly sophisticated vehicles constructed from a variety of materials including carbon �ber, Kevlar, �berglass, alumi-num, titanium, steel, structural foam, and other exotic materials. Between two and four trucks are typically used. Four to eight polyurethane wheels that are typically 70-90mm in diameter provide low rolling resistance, vibration dampening and traction.

In the late 80’s a group of Austrian snowboard-ing enthusiasts began sitting on their skateboards and riding down from the Kaurnatal Resort after a day of snowboarding. Over time their hobby grew into a fully organized race known as Hot Heels Kaurnatal. This is how Classic Luge or “Buttboarding” got its‘ start. To maintain the spirit of those early days, Classic Luge is the most restricted IGSA racing category. Boards must be constructed of wood and wheels cannot exceed 70mm in diameter. The trucks must be commercially available. The idea behind Classic Luge is to keep technology minimal so that the rider skill is the determining factor. Top speeds in Classic Luge tend to be only marginally slower than those achieved in Street Luge.

Reimer’s Dominant Year

Kevin “K-Rimes” Reimer dominated the IGSA’s 10th World Cup season unlike anyone before him. Out of the eight races, each competitors four best finishes were counted toward their final points tally. Of the six World Cup races Reimer competed in, he had four victories in Germany, France, Brazil and Australia giving him a perfect score of 1800 points. In the other two races he finished second (USA, Czech Republic). He also won his second World Championship in a row. For Reimer, 2010 will be remem-bered as a dream year.

Finishing second overall was Patrick “P-Swiss” Switzer. He was victorious in Italy, finished second in France and had third place finishes in both Germany and Australia giving him 1731.36 points for the season. It was a solid year for Switzer who was always pushing Reimer but seemingly unable to beat him. Expect him to come back even hungrier this year.

Christoph Batt had a breakthrough season earning his maiden World Cup victory in the Czech Republic, finishing second in Italy and scoring two fifth place finishes in Germany and South Africa. He was always fast and a contender in every race he entered. In the two races where he finished fifth, he had crashes in the Semi-Finals and then came back to win in the Consolation-Final. Batt will be a force to reckon with in 2011.

Serek is the winningest competitor in IGSA history. He won his first World Championship in 2003 and then went away to dental school. Since coming back in 2007 he’s been nearly unstoppable winning four consecutive Classic Luge World Cup Series titles

Eliot has been competing in street luge since the mid 90’s. He earned his first World Cup Series title back in 2002. Pete proved that he’s not lost any speed by winning his second Series title in 2010. Eliot is the favorite to win a third title in 2011.

Yvon is the only compeitor in history to win IGSA Championships in both downhill skateboarding and street luge. He’s a fierce competitor who never gives up. There is no love lost between Eliot and Labarthe. Look for fireworks on and off the track!

Luca had a breakout year in 2010 winning both the Street Luge World Championship and Kozakov Challenge. He excells on the courses that combine high speeds and technical prowess. 2010 boost his confidence and he could be unstoppable in 2011.

Abdil is a fierce competitor who was first introduced to luge while attending university in America. Since moving back to Malaysia, “Furlong” has become a sport ambassador bringing new competitors into the sport and organizing informal races in Malaysia.

Kevin Bouaich burst on the Classic Luge scene in 2009 by winning Peyragudes in his World Cup debut! Since then he’s shown that he is a consistent performer who can never be discounted. Bouaich will likely be adding to his victory tally this year.

Will Stephenson has been getting faster over the past few seasons as his experience level has grown. His lone Street Luge World Cup victory came at Teutonia in 2009, site of this years World Champi-onships. Can he win the big one in 2011?

Fabien continues to improve as his experience level increases. He went from 16th in the 2009 Classic Luge rankings to sixth last year. Prual has become a consistent top five finisher and is aiming for his first World Cup victory this year..
