WORLD CHAMPION

Mischo Erban had his best ever season in 2009. After finishing second in the Series the past two years, Mischo was finally able to put it all together to finishnumber one. His three World Cup victories, numerous number one qualifyingefforts and capturing the Official IGSA World Speed Record of 113.02 km/h (70.23 mph) made hime the most dominant racer of 2009. His dedication to thesport is unmatched. For the 2010 season he is moving away from his longtime sponsors to ride for GMR Skateboards, Ronin Trucks and Seismic Wheels.

After being the most dominant racer of 2008 winning both the World Championship and World Cup Series Championship Scoot seemed to struggle a lot in 2009. His win in Pey-ragudes was his only victory in 2009. As the season went on, Scoot seemed to gain momentum. His fight for the championship never let up. Anyone who witnessed his daring 110+ km/h pass on Martin Siegrist and subsequent crash would attest to that! He had strong second place showings in both England and Australia leaving him in conten-tion for the Championship until the very end. Scoot has been training hard all winter and seems hungrier than ever. Look for the green haired man from British Columbia to make another strong run for the World Cup Series Championship in 2010.

Patrick Switzer was certainly one of the big stories of 2009. After finishing a lowly 13th at Pey-ragudes, Switzer’s year took off. In the subsequent World Cup races he finished 4th at Grave-yard Call, 2nd at Padova, 3rd at Eastbourne and capped it all off with a huge win at Maryhill. He was leading the points series after Maryhill but unfortunately that was the end of his season. Switzer is an enginering student at the British Columbia Institute of Technology who support his racing efforts. Unfortunately his school commitments precluded him from compet-ing in Brazil, Australia and South Africa. Expect another solid year from Switzer in 2010. He has both the speed and racecraft to win it all. He just needs to make it to a few more races!

2009 marked the 7th year of competition for Martin Siegrist in IGSA World Cup competition. The three time World Champion had a great year with a World Cup win in Italy and also a European Championship victory in the Czech Republic. Siegrist finished his studies in 2009 receiving a degree in Industrial Design. With time between school and starting his career, Siegrist traveled to Brazil where he finished 4th and Australia where he crashed while lead-ing Kevin Reimer in the Semi’s and ultimately finished 6th. During the off-season he took a job and moved to Malaysia. Expect the downhill skateboarding scene to pick up speed in Kuala Lumpur! Siegrist will only run a limited schedule as his new work schedule permits. When he does show up at a race, expect him to be an instant contender.

Louis Pilloni attended his first World Cup competition in Europe this past summer and immediately made everyone stand up and take notice by winning. Pilloni is fast wherever he goes and always a threat for the podium.

Kevin Reimer sometimes complains that race courses aren’t challeng-ing enough to test the top pro’s skills. When Reimer won the World Championship on the incredibly challenging course in Australia, no one was suprised. Many consider him the world’s most talented racer.

James Kelly epitomises the laid back California attitude and lifestyle. He is turning the world on to the “No hands down” style of riding that features incredible stand up slides at full speed. Kelly is and incredibly fast and incredibly talented racer who is feared by many.

Stefan Rűefli is a fast and solid skater from Switzerland who will often make it to the round of eight and on occasion get a great result. In 2009 he took his skating up another notch by finishing the year 8th in points. The highlight of his season came in Italy where he finished on the podium behind only Siegrist and Switzer. Expect another strong season from Rűefli.

With three solid years under its’ belt, the Maryhill Festival of Speed has firmly established itself as one of the can’t miss events of the year. Race day in 2009 was hit with a crazy series of rain showers followed by sunshine. The cycle repeated itself throughout the day and created havoc for the racers. In the end it was Patrick Switzer earning his first ever World Cup victory over Brazilian Douglas Silva in 2nd and James Kelly in 3rd. For 2010, the event moves to Independance Day weekend. It should ensure dry but possibly very hot weather. Maryhill isn’t the most difficult course in the world to ride, but finding a fast line, posessing good drafting skills strong physical endur-ance are the keys to success. Maryhill is quite possibly the most difficult race in the world to win .

Since 2003, the Almabtrieb crew have been organizing some of the world’s best races.

Their first events were held in Auerberg, Germany from 2003-2004. The first event in

2003 was such a success, that the organizers were granted the World Championships

the following year. In 2005 the event moved to Jungholz, Austria where it hosted the

World Champonships in both 2005 and 2007. The last Almabtrieb World Cup race was

held in 2008. After a year off Almabtireb returns with an all new race course in Hunger-

zell, Germany. The track is long, technical and fast and is going to challenge the riders

on every corner. Almabtrieb is back and better than ever!

When The Graveyard Call was held for the first time in 2009, people really didn’t

know what to expect. It was the first time that the narrow and short D173 course

would be mated to local roads that brought the finish line into the center of town.

As it turned out the course was awesome! Many of the top riders felt it was the best

course on the circuit. The narrow top section necessitated the need for 2-man

heats. In the end the Final was a showdown between Scoot Smith and Mischo

Erban, the #1 and #2 riders of 2008. It was a dogfight all the way down the moun-

tain. Scoot nearly crashed within sight of the finish but recovered to earn the

victory. In the Consolation Final it was newcomer Nicolas Robert winning over

Patrick Switzer to earn 3rd. Expect another great battle in Argonay this year!

For the second consecutive year, the IGSA World Cup Series will be heading to

Italy for the Padova Grand Prix. The course has two distinct parts, the straight top

section where riders reach their highest speeds and the tight technical section. The

trickiest part is negotiating the tight right left combination at the end of the straight.

If they get it right, the riders will carry good speed throught the tight lower section.

If they get it wrong, the result will be a heavy, high-speed impact with the straw bale

walls. Spectators can view all the action from top to bottom on a giant screen

television near the finish line. Martin Siegrist scored a dominnt victory over

Canadian Patick Switzer last year. Stefan Ruefli finished in third and 2008 IGSA

World Cup Series Champion Erik Lundberg was 4th.

GRAVITY SPORTS EXPLAINED

Competitors stand upright on longboards and ride in an aerodynamic “tuck” position at speeds in excess of 110 km/h (68 mph). Downhill Skateboarding is also known as “Speedboarding” and “Stand up”. The skater’s hands are used as outriggers to help them main-tain balance and stability while cornering. Hard plastic pucks are attached to their gloves so they can place their hand on the pavement incurring only minimal friction. Braking is accomplished by either dragging one foot on the ground, or pitching the skateboard sideways in a controlled slide. Decks are typically 34”- 48” in length and constructed from materials including wood, carbon ber, Kevlar, berglass, aluminum, titanium and structural foam. Racing trucks are typically machined or cast aluminum. Wheels are made from advanced polyurethane formulas to provide low rolling resistance, vibration dampening, traction, and are typically between 70-90mm in diameter.

Street Luge has its’ roots rmly in skateboarding. In the 1970’s there was a downhill skateboarding competition in Signal Hill, California that featured highly modied, fully enclosed skateboards known as “Skatecars”. They proved so dangerous that they were essentially abandoned after the 1977 Signal Hill event. Rising from their ashes came increasingly sophisticated “Lay Down” skateboards that were used on the twisty, mountain roads of Southern California. After remaining underground for nearly two decades, ESPN adopted the sport for the inaugural 1995 X Games and renamed it “Street Luge.” Competitors lay in the supine (feet rst) position and control the oversize skateboard by leaning their bodies. Braking is accomplished by dragging the shoe soles on the pavement. Today’s street luge is a highly sophisticated vehicle constructed from a variety of materials including carbon ber, Kevlar, berglass, aluminum, titanium, steel, structural foam, and other exotic materials. Between two and four trucks are typically made of aluminum. Four to eight wheels made from advanced polyurethane formulas provide low rolling resistance, vibration dampening, traction and are typically between 70-90mm in diameter. Speeds at Teutonia Brazil reach 129 km/h (80 mph)!

Soon after the rst skateboard was invented, its’ creator likely sat down on it and realized that it worked well that way too. This is how Classic Luge or “Buttboarding” got its’ start. In the late 80’s a group of Austrian snowboarding enthusiasts began riding their skateboards down from the Kaurnatal Resort after a day of snowboard-ing. Over time their hobby grew into a fully organized race known as Hot Heels Kaurnatal. To maintain the spirit of those early days, this class is the most restricted IGSA racing category. Boards must be constructed of wood and wheels cannot exceed 70mm in diameter. The trucks must be commercially available. The idea behind Classic Luge is to keep technology minimal so that the rider skill is the determining factor. Top speeds in Classic Luge tend to only be marginally slower than those achieved in Street Luge.

Last year, Kozakov organizer Jan Profus and his sta made history when they organized the rst major downhill event to ever be held in a former Eastern Bloc country. The Kozakov Challenge was granted IGSA Continental status and hosted the 2009 European Championships. Most of the top racers attended and the race course received universal acclaim as one of the best in the world. Martin Siegrist beat Christoph Batt, Sebastian Hertler and native Czech Mischo Erban in the nal. This year Kozakov joins the World Cup circuit and is shaping up to be one of the best races of the year.

Teutonia is different from any other track on the World Cup circuit. The speeds are something that cannot be described. Although the track is relatively straight, the pavement is slightly uneven resulting in bumpiness that is amplified by the high speeds. The track also rolls up and down giving the riders a sense of weightlessness akin to riding a rollercoaster. Two-time Teutonia winner Kevin Reimer describes it as a straight, techni-cal hill. There is one smooth line down the track so if a rider wants to pass, they need to bravely do so on rougher pavement. Last year Scoot Smith attempted to pass Martin Siegrist in the Quarter Finals and ended up flipping down the track like a rag doll when he was tossed off his board at approximately 110 km/h (67 mph). Fortunately he was uninjured in the crash. In the Final Mischo Erban won a hard fought battle over Douglas Silva. Kevin Reimer finished 3rd and Martin Siegrist 4th. Official IGSA World Speed Records were also established at the event.

For the seventh consecutive year, the IGSA World Cup Series Finale will be held in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve near Cape Town. Summer is just beginning in the Southern Hemisphere when the event takes place so those who live in colder climates always enjoy the trip to Cape Town. Throughout the years many championships have been decided in Kogel-berg including last years nail biter between Mischo Erban and Scoot Smith that wasn’t put to rest until the final heat had been run. Mischo won last years race to put an exclamation point on his fine season and leaving no doubt that he was consistently the fastest skater of 2009. Local Mike Ziets-man put in another solid performance to finish in 2nd follwed by Scoot in 3rd and Oliver Neilson in fourth. Dasha Kornienko also wrapped up the Women’s Downhill Skateboarding Series title with her win over Rebekka Gemperle.

24 OFFICIAL IGSA WORLD CUP SERIES GUIDE 2010 www.IGSAworldcup.com

For many 2009 will be remembered as the year of the Great Recession when many around the world suffered through difficult economic times. The sport of Downhill Skateboarding was fortunately able to weather the storm better than most. Sponsors were difficult to come by and some events were canceled, but the organizers tightened their budgets and were able to provide a full IGSA World Cup season. The racers responded by coming out in record numbers. An IGSA record 642 skaters competed in 2009. Participa-tion in IGSA World Cup Series events actually increased by 20%! More top competitors were attending multiple events resulting in the tightest points battle ever.

Peyragudes 2Luxe CupJuly 15-18Peyragudes, France

Traveling to Europe for the first time was the California duo of James Kelly and Louis Pilloni. Both skaters brought speed and a stand up style with them that immediately raised the sport’s level to new heights. Mischo Erban qualified number one followed

The Graveyard CallJuly 24-26Argonay, France

The Argonay track is narrow and tech-nical so the decision was made to run in a one on one, two-man format. Pilloni picked up right where he left off in Peyragudes to qualify number one. Kelly was second followed by Siegrist in third. In the Final, Scoot Smith nearly crashed out 25 meters (75') from the finish line but gathered it back together for the win. He won it the hard way beating Adam Yates, Yvon Labarthe, Kelly, Patrick Switzer and finally Mischo Erban in head to head heats. It was the first win for the reign-ing IGSA World Champion of the 2009 season. Newcomer Nicolas Robert beat Switzer to earn third place.

by Pilloni and Kelly. In the final, Pilloni simply ran away with it. Erban crashed and finished fourth. 2007 Series Cham-pion Erik Lundberg and 3X World Champion Martin Segrist battled all the way down the course. Lundberg even-tually prevailed to earn second and Siegrist was third.

performance to start second followed by slalom ace Ramon Konigshausen in third. After a crash filled race day, the Final was set. Siegrist went to the front and never looked back. Switzer rode cleanly into second while Stefan Ruefli and Lundberg had a good battle all the way for the final podium spot. Ruefli eventu-ally prevailed to finish in third.

Eastbourne Speed DaysAugust 21-23Eastbourne, England

Coming into Eastbourne, Erban was sitting on top of the point standings. His consistently high finishes were scoring lots of points but he was feeling the pres-sure to earn his first win. Mischo was the fastest in qualifying followed by Smith in second and William Brunson in third. Sunday’s race was a battle of attrition. The Final came down to Erban, Smith,

2009 IGSA WORLD CUPSEASON REVIEW

By Marcus Rietema

Malarrara Pro TeutoniaOctober 23-25Teutonia, Brazil

Teutonia is the fastest track in the world and commands the highest respect from all who compete there. A special “Speed Run” was held to establish the Official IGSA Speed Record. Erban set the World Record with a speed of 113.02 km/h (70.23 mph). In qualifying it was Silva first, Erban second and Siegrist third. Sunday’s racing action was intense. Scoot was fortunate to be unin-jured after crashing at over 110 km/h. Erban was victorious in the end to

become the seasons first two-time winner. Silva was second, Kevin Reimer third and Siegrist fourth.

Newton’s Playground IGSA World ChampionshipsNovember 27-29Bathurst, Australia

The 8th Annual IGSA World Champion-ships were awarded to Newton’s Play-ground making it the most important race of the year. Nearly every top downhill skateboarder in the world was in atten-dance representing 16 different nations. Siegrist qualified number one followed by Erban and Smith. With a good result, Mischo could have wrapped up the Series Championship. Instead he crashed out in the first round. Kevin Reimer won the race was crowned the new World Champion. Scoot finished second keeping his Series Champion-ship hopes alive. Canadian Andrew Chapman was third and Olivier Bareaud fourth

Hot Heels AfricaDecember 11-13Kogelberg, South Africa

Mischo Erban came to South Africa hoping to secure his first World Cup Series title. After sustaining a severely sprained ankle a week before Hot Heels it looked like his dream would escape him. Erban proved his tenacity when he overcame the pain to qualify #1. Scoot qualified second and Mike Zietsman third. On race day, the whole season came down to the final heat. Mischo overcame adversity, won the race and the World Cup Series Championship. Zietsman finished second and Scoot third.

Mischo Erban Is World Cup Series ChampionWhen it was all said and done, Mischo had an amazing year. He won three races while nobody else had more than a single victory. Mischo was the number one qualifier on four occasions and also set the IGSA World Speed Record in Brazil. No other skater produced compa-rable results to Mischo

2009 will go down as one of the best on record for the sport of downhill skate-boarding. Participation increased, spec-tators increased and the level of the events continues to improve. The World Championships hosted by the Australian Skateboard Racing Association (ASRA) set new standards for technology and organization. The 2010 season is just around the corner. It’s going to be excit-ing watching the sport reach new heights in the coming year.

Maryhill Festival of SpeedSeptember 2-6Goldendale, WA, United States

The Festival of Speed featured an intense final qualifying session. Erban came out on top followed by Kelly and Nathan Lang. On race day the weather changed from sun to rain and back multiple times. Everyone was forced to adapt to the ever-changing conditions. After a chaotic afternoon of heats, the Final lined up with Erban, Smith, Switzer, Kelly, Lang and Douglas Silva from Brazil. There were numerous crashes amongst the finalists on the 3.5km (2.2 mi) course but eventually it was Switzer who prevailed. Silva was second, Kelly third and Lang finished in fourth.

26 OFFICIAL IGSA WORLD CUP SERIES GUIDE 2010 www.IGSAworldcup.com

The International Gravity Sports Association was founded in 1996 when a group of street luge and downhill skateboarding enthusiasts recognized the need for fair, unbiased leadership for the sport. Since its inception, the goals of the association have been to foster strong and fair competition, to provide reasonable rules, to administer the competition program with impartiality, and to reduce the hazards associated with the sport. The first IGSA event was held in May 1997 in San Bernardino, California. A few months earlier, IGSA Founder Marcus Rietema had been awarded the “Street Luge Sport Organizer” contract for the 1997 ESPN X Games to be held in Oceanside, California. The San Bernardino Grand Prix served as the open qualifying event for the 97’ X Games. In the early years, the IGSA events featured Street Luge only. In 2000, the IGSA added classes for Downhill Skateboarding, Classic Luge, Inline Skating, and Gravity Bike. This brought more competitors to each race and for the first time organizing races became financially viable for event organizers. 2001 was a pivotal year in the IGSA’s history. It was the year the IGSA World Cup Series was born and included big events in South Africa, Austria, Utah, and the X Games in Philadelphia. For the first time the organizers on different continents were working together under the common sanction of the IGSA. At the end of the year the IGSA suffered a serious blow when ESPN decided to exclude street luge from future competitions. The IGSA spent the next few years in survival mode. Many of the established street luge stars abandoned the sport with the demise of the X Games. 2002 started off with the huge Red Bull DHX event in Cape Town, South Africa. Later that year, Hot Heels in Kaurnatal, Austria hosted the first IGSA World Championships. The sport continued to grow in Europe with the Hot Heels event, but everywhere else it was limping along. By 2003, Hot Heels was the last surviving mega event and was canceled the following year. In December 2003, the first Hot Heels Africa event rose from the ashes of DHX. The race continues today as the longest running event on the IGSA World Cup schedule. 2004 was the year that Downhill Skateboarding became the prominent category of the sport for the first time. Red Bull Almabtrieb in Germany replaced the now defunct Hot Heels Kaurnetal, hosting the 2004 World Championships. For the first time, the number of Downhill Skateboarding entries exceeded those in Street Luge. In 2005 the Are Mountain Games in Sweden were paired with the Almabtrieb World Championships in Jungholz, Austria over a two-week period. This proved to be very popular with the international riders; with two first class events being held back to back.2006 saw the IGSA World Cup Series expand into South America for the first time with the RDH Rio Downhill. A few months later the Are Mountain Games returned, followed by the World Championships in Switzerland. The World’s were especially significant because 100 entrants were achieved in Downhill Skateboarding for the first time. In 2006, the IGSA World Cup Series had events on four continents (Africa, Europe, North America and South America).Although the IGSA had hosted World Cup events in North America, none

of them were able to attract significant numbers of downhill skateboard-ers. There were big scenes in both the US and Canada, but the skaters weren’t supporting the races. Everything changed with the advent of the Maryhill Festival of Speed in 2007. For the first time there was a multi-day festival type of race modeled after those in Europe and it was a huge success. Large numbers of top racers from Europe also attended the event. With the inclusion of all the top racers in North America, the World Cup Series took off.2008 was the year the IGSA World Cup came of age. The season started off with a first ever visit to Australia on the famous Mount Panorama motor racing circuit. Events followed in France, Germany, Austria and England. Maryhill hosted the 2008 World Championships and they were featured on NBC’s “Jeep World of Adventure Sports.” event sold out of 200+ entries in only seven hours! Teutonia, Brazil was also added to the tour in 08’ increasing the IGSA’s global reach to five continents (Africa, Australia, Europe, North America and South America).2009 built on the success of 2008 and despite the severe global reces-sion, total entries actually increased by 19% over the previous year! New events were added in Argonay, France and Teolo, Italy. Maryhill and Teutonia were big success stories once again. The Australian Skate-board Racing Association (ASRA) took over the promotion of Newton’s Playground and produced the best World Championship event in the IGSA’s history. The IGSA World Cup culminated for the seventh consecu-tive season with the finale in Kogelburg, South Africa. The IGSA World Cup Series will continue to gain momentum in 2010. New World Cup events in Germany and the Czech Republic will broaden the Series’ appeal in both Western and Eastern Europe. Newton’s Nation in Australia has an aggressive new promoter who intends to take the sport to higher levels while working alongside the highly efficient ASRA crew. 2010 will mark the 10th anniversary of the IGSA World Cup Series and the IGSA’s 14th year of competition. To commemorate the occasion, new IGSA, IGSA Downhill Skateboarding World Cup Series and IGSA Street Luge World Cup Series logos have been created. Be sure to catch all the action at www.IGSAworldcup.com, www.SilverfishLongboarding.com, and in Concrete Wave Magazine.

Each year the IGSA designates one (1) event as the IGSA World Cham-pionships. The competitor who wins their respective class at this race is awarded the title of IGSA World Champion. Past host cities include Kaurnetal, Austria (2002, 2003), Auerburg, Germany (2004), Jungholz, Austria (2005, 2007), Scheid, Switzerland (2006), Goldendale, WA, USA (2008) and Bathurst, Australia (2009). The 2010 IGSA World Champion-ships will be held July 14-17 in Hungerzell, Germany.

All IGSA sanctioned events are designated Regional, National, Continen-tal or World Cup. World Cup races award the most points and Regional’s the least. From the time period of January 1st – December 31st each competitors four (4) best results are tabulated to achieve their World Cup points total. If a competitor races in more than four races their lowest point scoring races are dropped. On December 31st, the competitor with the most points is declared the World Cup Series Champion.
