Well Done To Neil Gillingham our mens track captain who completed the London Marathon on April 25th in aid of Alzheimer’s research. He finished in 4hrs 42mins raising over £1000. Tips Open events are one off events run by athletic clubs. They usually provide good competition, winner’s medals and a fun day out. It’s a good way to improve your PBs! After a pretty slow or should I say SNOW start to the year with even the toughest of our athletes unable to compete due to the lousy weather conditions things finally calmed down enough for the winter season to reach a climax. Once again our junior athletes finished on a high with our girls overall team winners and the boys joint runners up. Well done everyone who took part. Individual congratulations go to Susannah Reid, Claire Caiger and Andrew Revell all finishing first in their age groups with Jonathan Bailey 2nd and Emma Burroughs 3rd. An early but very important date for our athletes is the County Championships which were held this year at our home track on saturday 9th May. All track and field events were included with medals awarded for the first 3 places in each age group. The club was well represented in most events and by the end of a busy day many of our athletes could be spotted with medals around their necks and tired smiles on their faces (for more details and results checkout www.suffolkathletics.co.uk the official web site for suffolk athletics). With the evenings beginning to lighten up the track season is once again upon us and our lovely team managers are circling, clipboards in hand recruiting team members for the various meetings (see upcoming events). Everyone is welcome to attend even if you’re not the best, you should attend as many as you can for the competitive experience and to support the team, it really is great fun and every point counts! Match ReportsSouthern Women’s League, 24th April

Ipswich Harriers opened their new season in the premier division of the Southern Women’s league with a home fixture at Northgate and in a very close contest, finished third on the day behind a very strong Basildon team.

The U15 team started as strongly as they finished last season with Enya Moore and Emily Lambert again strong in the sprints. Lambert won the 200m B string with a good time of 27.2 whereas Moore won the B 100m in 13.2. They then anchored the relay team with Beth Clarke and Lizzie Lehkyj. Clarke won the 75m hurdles and Long jump while Lehkyj won the High Jump. Sarah Prescott-Smith made a good debut, winning the B High and Long Jumps. There was some great performances from the middle distance events. Emily Robinson won the A string 800m in 2.36 while another debutante Lauren Ramsey recorded a PB of 2.44. Katie Peake and Sophie Godbold came third in the A and B 1500m with Katie recording a PB of 5.33. The throws were dominated by the Ipswich trio of Ellie

Bloomfield, Helena Coe and Alice Robinson. Robinson won the A Javelin in 24.82m, Coe won the A shot and B discus in which Bloomfield threw 24.68m to win the A.

The Senior women had a much harder time against two strong teams from Basildon and Colchester. Georgina Malster won the A 200m while her sister Gemma came 2nd in the B string. They formed the nucleus of the 4 x 100 relay team which won in 50.3. Kerry Dixon and Ella Jennings came 2nd in the A and B 400m and then helped the 4 x 400 relay team to come form a long way behind to snatch 2nd from Basildon in the final straight. Elizabeth Welbourn performed wonders to finish the 1500m straight after the 3000m on a hot afternoon. In the throws, Kerry Fuller was again multi talented, winning the B hammer after doing well in the shot and hurdles. Georgina Howe won the A hammer with a throw of 41.49, a PB.

Eastern Young Athletes, 25th April

The first event of the season for the junior Ipswich Harriers took place at the excellent Lee Valley Stadium, the home of Enfield and Haringey. After narrowly missing out on the finals last season Harriers were determined to get off to a good start. In a tight match, they eventually finished fourth behind three very strong sides who will almost certainly feature in the end of season finale. Under 13sThis year, the U13 team are a lot stronger and were able to fill all events which augurs well for the rest of the season. One of the outstanding performances came from Chloe Godbold, making her debut. She still has another year at this level and followed up a good performance in the 100m and Long jump with a time of 31.3 in the 200m. Chantelle Kilpatrick ran and jumped well as her partner in these events. Elise Morey also made her debut in the 800m, finishing a very good 3rd with Lucy Peake doing similarly well in the 1500m.

Another string of debuts made good starts to the boys Harriers career. Charlie Startin recorded a time of 15.8

in the hurdles, propelling him into the top 50 in the country at his first attempt. He also ran well in the 100m and 200m. Matt Cullum and Benson Craven performed well in the sprints and relays with Cullum doing really well by turning out in

the 800m with James Bowskill, also making his debut. Bowskill had an impressive race in the 800m then threw well in the shotput together with Theo Passmore who finished 3rd in the 1500m.

Under 15sHelena Coe was the pick of the U15

girls in the throws. She came second in the shot and then recorded a pb of 24.40m winning the discus. It was good to see a strong line up in the 800m of Emily Robinson, Rosie Payne, Lauren Ramsey and Rachel Ryan all doing really well, especially since Ramsey and Robinson had performed the previous day, as had Sophie Godbold and Katie Peake in the 1500m.

Alice Robinson won the javelin with a pb of 22.36m. Lizzie Lehkyj came 2nd in the high jump while Mone`

Betterton came 2nd in the 300m with a pb of 46.4. Finally Sarah Prescott-Smith won the Long Jump to continue this age groups success from last year. The highlight of the U15 boys team was an impressive run from Ross Tennant to win the 1500m with a time

of 4.49. Earlier Cameron Duncan ran impressively to finish 4th in the 800m. George Johnson produce a pb of 12.7 in finishing 2nd in the 100m, then 3rd in the 200m with 25.9.

Under 17sCharlotte Shelley won the High Jump with 1.58m and then came 3rd in the sprint hurdles. Jess Crissell came

2nd in the 300m with a pb of 45.4, her first real attempt. She then formed part of the relay squad that came 2nd with Beth Clarke, Faye Godden and Abby Hadley. Lucy Barnes threw 21.54m in the discus to finish 3rd, an excellent effort considering she is primarily a middle distance runner.Tom Powell was the high spot of the boys squad, finishing 3rd in the High Jump with 1.75m and doing well with the 100m and 200m. Leon Holmes performed well in the sprints following on from his impressive start to the season at the Chelmsford Open.
