    relax & enjoy

But relaxing isnt just a case of sitting back to watch the world go by - though there are many opportunities to do that; it is also about fi nding interest and enjoyment in new sights and activities.Whatever you want to do, the Island has plenty of offer and this guide can help you make an informed choice.

There are many places to visit, so its perfect for explorers, as well as for more leisurely wanderings.

There really is something for everyone, whatever your age or interests. And it is a safe environment, perfect for children and older people alike.

Will you and your family have a traditional seaside holiday, laze on the beach, or learn to sail?

Will you savour the clean sea air and beautiful scenery on our coastal paths, or from a fishing boat, or taste the goodness of fine food and drink in one of our pubs, cafes and restaurants?

Whatever you decide to do, you will discover some of the magic of the Isle of Wight that draws visitors back year after year.

For some, it could be the spectacular landscape of hills, white cliffs and blue seas. Some may relish the picturesque villages with their thatched cottages and beautifully preserved churches. For others, the sea is the attraction, whether that is simply enjoying one of the biggest sports events in the world - Cowes Week; or learning to kayak; or swimming in the clean water off beaches which are certified clean and safe.

Many people come simply to walk, soaking up the Islands atmosphere and scenery, before sampling superb seafood in an award winning restaurant by the sea, perhaps.

The Island is just 27 miles at its longest point, so you dont have far to travel.

And you have some interesting options as you plan your holiday - take an Island Line train between Shanklin and Ryde; explore by Southern Vectis bus using a good value Rover ticket; or take the car along well signposted roads.

For example, you can soak up the Islands heritage at English Heritage and National Trust properties, and get up close to wildlife at a variety of venues. You can go horse riding, mountain biking, tree climbing, paragliding, and just about anything else you can think of!

You might want to discover peace at a monastery, soak up the atmosphere at a Roman villa, admire the plants at one our fabulous gardens, or have an action packed and fun day out at one of our family attractions. The choice is very definitely yours...

But its not such an easy choice to make: our visitors tell us they love the Islands unique maritime landscapes, which are beautiful at whatever time of year, but equally they never cease to be amazed at the range of possibilities there are for days out. Even those who come back year after year find something new.

This guide will give you some idea of what is available, and you can find out more by searching the web.

But we strongly recommend that you resolve to cross the water and come and explore ... the Island is an attraction in its own right, and we are fairly confident that you wont run out of ways to enjoy your stay with us!

It is a perfect place for sunbathing, beach games, and strolling, but the town is full of great pubs, cafes and restaurants, and shops, too, so youre never short of something to enjoy.

The town is becoming increasingly famous for its carnival - the oldest carnival in the UK, and traditionally held towards the end of the summer... well worth sticking around for.

Two ferry companies run services to Ryde - the high speed catamaran from Portsmouth to the end of Ryde pier; and the hovercraft from Southsea which berths right next to the promenade. Connecting trains can whisk travellers on to Shanklin, and stations en route.

Travelling out of town and heading east, the Island takes on a different feel.

There are some atmospheric coastal villages here, including Seaview which is a busy sailing centre in the summer, while still retaining its character (and, of course, some excellent dining!)

Further on, Bembridge is another major sailing centre. It has a charming harbour, a beach with rock pools, and no shortage of shops and galleries to browse round. Bembridge is also home to a National Trust windmill, and offers pubs and hotels to encourage you to linger longer.

  • Osborne

It is home to theatres, clubs, a cinema, and a host of great shops and other attractions not to mention a wide variety of places to eat and drink.

The legendary Isle of Wight Festival is staged just a 15 minute walk from the town centre. The festival site is right by the river Medina where you can walk or cycle. The Quay Arts Centre stands at the head of the Newport waterfront.

Not far away is Carisbrooke Castle, where Charles 1 was held prisoner, and the Newport Roman Villa is on the outskirts of the town, too.

Cowes is home to one of the biggest sporting events in the world, Cowes Week - when the worlds top sailors join up with enthusiastic amateurs to stage a festival of sailing like no other. But Cowes is an attractive destination at any time, with a friendly atmosphere, great shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs.

Cowes is also a major terminal for the car ferry to and from Southampton, as well as a fast passenger service.

Just across the estuary by the historic chain ferry, East Cowes has its own marina, promenade and shops.

And just up the road is Osborne, Queen Victorias favourite home, now beautifully preserved by English Heritage. The house has splendid grounds and its own beach.

It is the perfect place for a summer break, with a wide range of facilities, entertainment, as well as space to relax and unwind.

And its very easy to get to using public transport.

If you can tear yourself away from the beach, youll find the town has a great choice of restaurants and pubs.

Dinosaur Isle, just down the seafront, tells the full story of why the Isle of Wight has become known as dinosaur Island. The area around Sandown Bay is a good place to go fossil hunting, to see if you can find your own piece of history washed up by the waves.

The sea air is wonderful, and a walk along the coastal path to Shanklin is the perfect way to enjoy it.

Shanklin also has a long, sandy beach which is great for sunbathing, and one of its attractions is its fine gardens, including Shanklin Chine a narrow gorge running down to the sea, filled with rare plants, a waterfall, and lots of points of interest. The lovely Rylstone Gardens provide another option, particularly on long, hot summer days.

They are both close to one of Shanklins other big attractions, the historic and charming Old Village, with its thatched cottages, tearooms, and small shops.

You can walk along the promenade from Shanklin through Lake into Sandown.

Nearby Bonchurch became the haunt of a number of famous writers, including Dickens and Turgenev, and the village - almost unchanged, with its village pond and pretty cottages - can be reached by a stroll along the sea wall.

It is easy to see why Ventnor remains so popular today.

Its sandy beach is great for relaxation; a walk along the coast path takes you to the famous 22 acre Ventnor Botanic Gardens, and Steephill Cove, one of the Islands many hidden gems.

The town has a supermarket and a mix of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants, together with a fine choice of accommodation and fine dining.

Further along the coast is the Islands southernmost point, and the St Catherines lighthouse, which is open at various times. Heading west, you next reach the charming village of Niton, and the Blackgang Chine family attraction.

The views on the coast path from Ventnor to Blackgang are superb, and there is a viewpoint car park just before the road plunges down towards the village of Chale, with its historic church.

This section of the path begins in picturesque Freshwater Bay, climbs up the soaring white cliffs to the Tennyson Monument the poet once lived at nearby Farringford, now a restaurant - and on to the unique and glorious Needles.

Whether you walk, cycle, take the bus, or drive to the Needles, youll be rewarded with spectacular views, including the unique coloured sands of Alum Bay, and the Needles Park, which is a big attraction for families.

Freshwater Bay is also a good starting point for a flat walk through the Afton Marsh nature trail, which links up to a cycleway/walkway along the river to Yarmouth.

Yarmouth is a bustling and charming harbour town, full of history, and with excellent small shops youll want to browse round, and no shortage of good quality pubs and restaurants. It is served by the ferry from Lymington, and has bus links to the rest of the Island, too.

Nearby, Totland Bay has a nice beach and a short esplanade, and refreshments available. And Colwell Bays beach is a lovely place to soak up the sun.

Heading out on the coast road from Freshwater Bay, you will find the enormous Compton Bay sandy beach, which is great for rock pooling, surfing, paragliding, and swimming - and is also a good place to hunt for fossils.

Many of the Islands best dinosaur fossils have been found here.

Heading out from Yarmouth towards Cowes, it is well worth the short diversion to the beautiful Newtown Creek, a nature reserve which is a magnet for birds.

There are many ferry crossings every day, and you can choose to cross from Southampton, Portsmouth, Southsea, and Lymington, using car or passenger ships and high speed passenger services, including hovercraft.Travel by car is easy on the Island, but bus services link up with each ferry terminal to make this a very tempting and environment friendly alternative.

Travel by bus also gives you the chance to take in the scenery, while someone else does the driving, of course!

And dont forget that the Island is rated as one of the best cycling destinations in the world - so why not leave the car behind and use pedal power?
