Dear Friends:

I n 2008 Jeffco Action Center celebrated its 40th anniversary of service to the Jefferson County community. We had so much to celebrate as we considered what this organization accomplished

over the decades. At the same time, we know that there is much to be done to be of service to so many in our community as our economic conditions decline.

We realize that our services are needed today every bit as much as any other time in the past and we are as dedicated today as our founders were 40 years ago in delivering our services in a manner that incorporates compassion and dignity. But over the years, we have customized our services to achieve our mission of providing an immediate response to basic human needs while promoting pathways to self-sufficiency. We now extend our programming in three facets; intervention, prevention and connection. Those needing our help fall at different places along that continuum but regardless of their needs, we have a means to assist them in their process.

Daily, individuals and families in Jefferson County struggle to overcome difficult circumstances that impact their ability to become or remain self-sufficient. In FY 08 we distributed 700,000 total meals from our food bank, over 111,000 clothing items from our clothing bank and provided nearly 5,500 shelter nights at our homeless shelter.

But we recognize that pathways towards self-sufficiency entail more in-depth services. Many of those in need of our services also lack adequate access to educational, medical, employment and other essential opportunities. Therefore, we continue to work closely with our partners to provide the most efficient and effective service delivery possible. Those partners include Red Rocks Community College, Volunteers of America, Metro Community Providers Network, Exempla Lutheran Medical Center, Helping Hearts and Hands and Jefferson County Human Services. We also recognize the invaluable contributions made by community organizations, churches, schools, businesses, our donors and amazing volunteers.

We have much to be grateful for in 2008. Through your continued commitment to all in Jefferson County in need of a hand-up, we are dedicated to providing the services needed in the year ahead.

As always, please know that we are grateful for your interest and support of our mission.

Sincerely,

Mag StrittmaterExecutive Director Jeffco Action Center

40 Years Old and Still Going StrongFor 40 years, Jeffco Action Center has stood as a beacon of hope to the homeless, near

homeless and working poor of Jefferson County, helping thousands of families and individuals break the cycle of poverty and improve their lives and their community.

The Action Center was started by area churches as a stop gap for people who fall through the cracks of government assistance and having sufficient income to meet their needs. Initially housed and operated out of churches, the Center expanded into its current location at 8755 W. 14th Avenue Lakewood, CO. Jeffco Action Center also operates a separate shelter to meet the ever increasing community needs.

“Looking back at how far we have come from a simple idea to providing a solution to poverty, we have truly exceeded our visionary’s dreams,” said Mag Strittmatter, Executive Director. “As I walk through our facilities, I am filled with hope and encouragement about the future and at what new services we will provide that will break the cycle of poverty.”

Each day Jeffco Action Center works to meet the needs of the homeless, near homeless and working poor; the families whose full-time income still falls short, the people whose medical bills forced them onto the streets, and those who have traveled across the country to Colorado in search of a new beginning and a better life. For those struggling to break the cycle of poverty, the Action Center gives help, provides hope and builds dignity. Jeffco Action Center, is not just the largest and oldest food pantry in Jefferson County, the agency offers clothing, work-readiness support, computers to find jobs, medical assistance, utility assistance and when things get really tough, a shelter that provides emergency shelter that protects people from the rigors of living on

the street.

With that goal in mind, Jeffco Action Center focuses on three main areas: intervention, prevention and connection.

Intervention

Through intervention, the Action Center helps families and

individuals avoid crisis situations from dragging them deeper into poverty. Action Center solutions in this area include food, bus tokens, tenant/landlord counseling and even a 22-bed homeless shelter.

Last Year

PreventionThe Action Center helps prevent

many low-income Jefferson County families from facing a potential crisis of deciding to pay rent or buy food. Many of these Jefferson County residents are those who in the past had donated items to the Action Center, but due to the changing economy now find themselves in need.

Jeffco Action Center understands that tough economic times affect everyone and they work to prevent this decision by providing such services as food, transportation assistance and seasonal programs (school supplies, holiday food and Santa Shop.)

Connection

The Action Center connects residents with other community services that provide assistance. Many visitors simply are not aware of all the services available to them. The Action Center

changes that. After they work with Action Center counselors and depending on their needs, the Action Center connects them with a multitude of life-improvement options including an on site Jefferson County Human Services member to help them navigate state-aid programs, an on site food-stamp coordinator or even an on site Red Rocks Community College outreach worker to continue their education.

5th Annual Fund Raiser a Big DrawJ effco Action Center’s fifth annual Where Action Matters fund raising breakfast on May 14th was a

huge success. More than 480 friends and supporters in attendance and nearly $325,000 was raised! As part of the program, Harry Mathews, owner of The Mathews Collection, announced a leadership challenge of $150,500 that included a lead pledge of $100,000 from him and his wife, Cris. In addition, almost 300 attendees made pledges or gifts that morning! The annual breakfast showcases the Action Center’s many programs and accomplishments over the past year. Attendees at this year’s breakfast saw successes highlighted in a new video that was unveiled. The one-hour event has become one of the key ways to let the community know about the Action Center and allows us to continue all the good work we do, expand services and programs, and implement new ones.

Tremendous Community Response to Food Crisis

During October and November 2007, food donations to the Action Center had dropped by 50 percent compared to previous years while the number of people streaming through the

Action Center doors needing help increased by 10 percent. As a result, the Action Center was forced to purchase regular food in December for the first time in our 39-year history. Food typically stockpiled for January and February, our slowest donations months, was being used in December. The warehouse, usually filled to capacity from holiday food drives, had been largely depleted. When the community found out about the Action Center’s needs, the community response

was overwhelming. Food drives and cash donations came pouring in, stunning staff and volunteers alike.

“It was just like the scene in It’s a Wonderful Life where the community rallied to help George Bailey,” said Executive Director Mag Strittmatter. “With the amount of donations we received, and with several other large drives coming in soon, we should be good for a several months. This was one of the best holiday seasons ever.”

Teaming Up With Helping Hearts & Hands

Beginning in January 2008, Jeffco Action Center became Helping Hearts & Hands’ new fiscal sponsor. Since 1998 Helping

Hearts & Hands (HHH) has been providing one-time assistance for individuals and families who have special needs that cannot be met through their own resources and threatens their self-sufficiency. They provide the community the opportunity and privilege to help people

“who fall through the cracks” and cannot get help from anywhere else. The similar missions make the partnership a perfect fit. As HHH’s fiscal sponsor, Jeffco Action Center provides fiscal management and oversight as well as an office at the Action Center.

Original Warehouse DemolishedA fter several years of operating out of churches, the founders of Jeffco Action Center realized they

needed their own buildings to house their expanding programs. In 1971, members of Church Women United purchased old barracks from Lowry Air Force Base with a grant from Church Women United national. The building was sawed in half and in the dead of night, one section was trucked over to the back lot of Foothills Christian Church at 45th & Wadsworth Boulevard to be used for the Santa Shop program. The other half of the building was trucked to the Lakewood United Methodist Church on Balsam Street to become the Action Center’s Headquarters. Renovations to the buildings, including adding heat and electricity, were financed through the collection of Betty Crocker Coupons! In 1978, the building located on the Foothills Christian Church property was moved to the back lot of the Jefferson Avenue Methodist Church to serve as the Action Center’s warehouse, where it resided until June 2008. It has been a long and fruitful relationship; however, the church notified the Action Center of plans to sell the property where the building was located. While the warehouse played a vital role for the Action Center over the years, the distance from the main building was inconvenient as well as costly as gas prices increased. The buildings had also deteriorated such that a demolition day brought far more cheers than tears!

School Supply Drive Equips More Than 2,700 Students

Going back to school is an exciting time for school children when they have new backpacks filled with basic needs like paper, pencils, and bright-colored folders. For many families, purchasing

school supplies puts a financial strain on their tight budgets. In August 2007, over 2,700 children received school supplies from Jeffco Action Center, thanks to the generosity of the community. Organizations, churches, businesses, and individuals contributed materials, money, and time to the annual event. Weeks of preparation and the distribution of the supplies took place at the Lakewood United Methodist Church (LUMC) located just a few blocks from the Action Center. The space

made available by LUMC proved to be a big asset in both preparation and distribution. For two to three weeks prior to the distribution, more than 160 volunteers assisted in sorting, bagging, and distributing school supplies according to school grade.

John McElwain, In-kind Donations Coordinator, directed the transportation and unloading of school supplies from the Action Center’s dock and warehouse. He estimates the space at the church to be about five times the space at the Action Center, historically used for this purpose. This provided

room for unloading, sorting, and bagging many truckloads of materials. More importantly, there was a noticeable improvement in the client flow during distribution in the new location.

Ann Vorick, Volunteer Coordinator, scheduled and oversaw volunteers. “It takes a lot of hands and hearts to get ready for this event, and I am so grateful to find such caring, wonderful volunteers willing to work so hard to give kids the essentials they need to start another school year,” she said.

Due to limited space, we are unable to list all of the contributors who made gifts during the fiscal year. Thanks to our other 911 donors who contributed a total of $32,534. These donors have been recognized in our quarterly newsletter.

In addition, each year Jeffco Action Center receives thousands of items donated to our dock area. While we are unable to list these donors here, we would like to acknowledge their significant contribution to our continued success.
