Anyone vaguely familiar with hiphop in Asia has heard of The President, better known as Joe Flizzow. For decades, the Malaysian rapper, producer, and songwriter has helped define the genre’s sound in his home country and is widely regarded as an influential figure in its hiphop music scene. Since establishing his reputation as a hiphop industry leader, Joe hasn’t stopped hustling. Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, the city is also home to the label and talent agency he founded in 2005: Kartel Records. In the late 1990s, Joe began his career as half of legendary hiphop duo Too Phat, alongside Malique Ibrahim under Positive Tone. The group broke into radio airplay with their 1999 singles Li’l Fingaz and Too Phat Baby, reinforcing a localized hiphop culture in the Malaysian mainstream. Over the span of the next several years, they released albums whuttadilly?, Plan B, Phat Family, 360°, Too Phat: The Classics, and Rebirth Into Reality (2005). The duo’s final album was released under Kartel Records, garnering instant acclaim for the label by winning Best Local English Album and Best Album Cover awards at the 2006 Anugerah Industri Muzik. Joe engrained himself into Asian hiphop culture with his solo debut The President in 2008, which took Best Local English Album at the 2009 Angurah Industri Muzik. He followed it up with Malay language album Havoc in 2013, which earned the number one spot on the iTunes Malaysia chart. The album’s success led to a variety of innovative brand collaborations with Suzuki, Celcom, Samsung, Kl HopOn HopOff, Tesco, and more. Havoc single “Apa Khabar” won Best Hip Hop Song at the 2014 Anugerah Industri Muzik, and made history as the first hiphop song to take Song of the Year award at the Anugerah Juara Lagu in its 29 years. In addition to his legacy in the music industry as founder and CEO of Kartel Records, Joe Flizzow has expanded the company to include talent agency Kartel Agency, representing a variety of cultural icons including Altimet, SonaOne, Ila Damia, Zamaera, Aisya Hasna and Anis Nabilah. In 2012, his travel show “HipHoppin’ Asia” aired on 8TV and went on to win the Silver Plaque for the Travel Series category at the 2013 19th Chicago International Film Festival Television Awards. Joe successfully ventured into hospitality in 2014 with his barbershop, Joe’s 47500 and restaurant, Joe’s Kitchen in Subang Jaya. Kartel has established itself as the biggest independent hiphop label and talent agency in Malaysia and one of Asia’s most recognizable brands. If his past is any indication of his future, Joe Flizzow will not stop expanding his legacy anytime soon.
