IN THE NEWSKONGA RECOGNIZED ASTHE ‘2ND MOST INNOVATIVE COMPANY IN AFRICA’!!!

This month, Konga.com received international recognition from Fast

Company in its annual world's 50 Most Innovative Companies issue. Earning

recognition as the 2nd of the World's Top 10 Most Innovative Companies

of 2015 in Africa, the publication called out Konga as "…having the potential

to become an African e-commerce behemoth."

This would be the second consecutive year that Konga would be recognized

in this prestigious list; the company has risen up 3 spots on the list from the

5th position it held last year. Only one other company had the distinction of

being recognized on both the 2014 and 2015 lists—‘One Acre Fund’ from

Kenya. Previous editions of the list have featured Tech giants such as

Amazon and Twitter.

This award is one of many signs that Konga is revolutionizing the landscape

of commerce in Nigeria today through innovation and creativity.

KONGA AND NIPOST ENTER INTO PARTNERSHIPFOR IMPROVED SERVICE DELIVERY

On the 12th of this month, we announced with NIPOST a partnership in which NIPOST post offices would also double up

as pick up locations for Konga orders. The announcement was made at a joint press conference held at NIPOST UNILAG

office.

Execution on the collaboration would begin with NIPOST locations in universities. As part of the agreement signed by the

two organizations, NIPOST’s EMS delivery service would also be leveraged as an additional channel for quick and

affordable nationwide delivery service for Konga Marketplace sellers.

At the event, the Honorable Minister of Communication and Information Technology Mrs. Omobola Johnson

represented by Dr. Abiodun Jagun commended the initiative stating that the partnership is a laudable one, and that it

would support the growth of e-commerce and retail in Nigeria.

DELIVERED-TO-SHIPPED CHAMPIONS LEAGUEProudly sponsored by K-Express

January 2015 League Standings

The start to the 2015 delivered- to- ship season is live and some

teams are already showing champions character with sterling

performance at the start of the season. A well- organized

defense (Inventory Officers), effective and efficient midfield

(Sorters & Admin Officers) using the midfield and flanks to

supply a potent attacking force (Dispatch, Driver & Assistants)

team has earned some teams accolades.

This is not a game of football but fulfillment operations by K-

Express. Ikorodu, Ibadan & Yaba SC teams has shown the quality

of a well-balanced effective team with their performance in the

month of Jan 2015. The start to the 2015 season was keenly

contested with the teams jostling for the top spot on the league

table. Ikorodu SC came tops closely followed by Ibadan and Yaba

respectively.

The management will like to use this medium to congratulate

and appreciate these teams for showing character and for being

formidable in the month of Jan, 2015. Though 2015 is still a long

season ahead, we hope to see consistent improvement and the

urgent need for the bottom teams in the relegation zone to

improve on their performances.

DIRECTOR COMMERCIALON SELF-FULFILMENT

1. Briefly explain the concept of Marketplace?HR:

Marketplace is a concept that gives any buyer Mark:

or seller in Lagos the ability to trade on the Konga

platform, list their products and have them fulfilled by

K Express which is Konga and delivered nationwide.

2. What is the current modus operandi of HR:

Marketplace?

It is noteworthy to mention that, Konga has Mark:

over 10,000 sellers at the moment Lagos-wide. These

sellers list products on the platform, customers see

them and make their orders, merchants take the

ordered parcels to one of the drop-off centres in

Lagos, and those are taken in and delivered by

KExpress to customers.

3. What is Self-Fulfillment about?HR:

Self- Fulfillment is giving the marketplace Mark:

sellers within and outside Lagos the liberty to deliver

their own products themselves, rather than being

compelled to use KExpress.

4. Why are we shifting focus to Self-fulfillment at HR:

this time?

We have observed overtime that, the amount Mark:

of capacity in terms of demands for our sellers

products verses the physical ability for KExpress to

cope with those volumes is very dis-jointed, so there

is more demand really than we can fulfill.

There are a number of sellers who are capable of

delivering much faster than KExpress because they

are dealing with a very small proportion of the whole

volume. So customer satisfaction level increases and

sellers are very much happier because it improves

their ability to get their pay faster.

Self-Fulfill enables sellers to deliver wider varieties of

products that we could ever handle as Konga. So now

with Self-Fulfill, you can deliver cup-cakes, and a

variety of perishable items, Agricultural goods,

livestock, very large items of furniture, even services

at some point. It all hinges on Konga's vision of

creating a platform or eco system for commerce in

Africa and Nigeria particularly. In this ecosystem, it’s

our role to provide a platform and some of the

services and really the bringing together of buyers

and sellers, rather than to try to constrain trade by

what we are able to do with the infrastructure we

have built. Its not to say that the things we have

invested in were the wrong things, they were actually

the right things to do. But now, we recognize that

commerce in Africa is not going to be this heavily

controlled western centric view of commerce, but its

going to be the “e” in front of Apapa, the “e” in front of

computer village, the “e” in front of Balogun.etc.

5. What will be the impact of Self-Fulfillment on the HR:

organization?

There is huge amount of work to do from the Mark:

technology perspective. So we have this wonderful

K-BEATS | EDITIONFEBRUARY 2015

5

Page 8: K beats february edition 2015

application called SellerHQ, which is the tool used to

list products, manage orders, confirm deliveries, to

see how much your payment is as a seller. etc. It was

designed to operate in a very tight and constrained

world of Konga and KExpress, so now we are

liberalizing it to develop a lot of functionality within

the platform, to enable you a seller provide lots of

choice; how you want to fulfill these items, whether

you want to accept pay-on-delivery or not, which

areas do you want to deliver to, and then, that choice

gets pushed down to the website so that buyers can

determine which of these options they would like. So,

the technology team is working incredibly at the

moment to deliver on a number of key projects on

Self-Fulfill. There's a separate and equally difficult and

challenging project around payment--K-Pay which is

very exciting, but that's for another conversation but

its fundamental.

As the business switches focus to much more

Marketplace, the Retail team will become very

focused on the things we do very well like mobile

phones, laptops, appliances and also exciting fashion

products. So they become the key two areas of focus

rather than some of the other categories we have

been trying to spread ourselves in because, in many

of these categories, the marketplace percentage of

the business is already above the retail percentage.

So we are going to become very tightly focused on

certain areas of retail that we do very well in and

continue to develop, and then the rest of the category

we may not buy but are still demanded for, will now

become marketplace.

6. HR: Having said alot, could you drop a few words for

Konganians?

Mark: This is an amazingly exciting time to be in

Nigeria and in Ecommerce business in Africa because

things are moving so quickly. This is a kind of one-off

opportunity because, there would never be a Konga

at this stage of its life where we are building these

things. So we are really mapping and we should all be

proud to be a kind of cartographies, the mark makers

if you like. There is no template, there's no root-map,

we are not following anybody, we are genuinely

leading the way. Its important that as we do that, we

retain the ability to innovate constantly. I will

encourage everybody to look around once in a while

and to see how far we have come in such a short

space of time, and how much we still need to do. But

the really important thing is as we talk to these sellers

particularly and hear the stories of empowerment

that konga platform has given them, its incredibly

rewarding. Konga is more now than just a retail

ecommerce.

HR: Thank you Mark for your time, we appreciate your

efforts; well done Marketplace team.

Mark: My pleasure.

erformance Appraisal is a formal and structured system of measuring and evaluating job related behaviors

Pand the performance of employees of an organization against set objectives, within a specified period of time.

It is a developmental tool used for all round development of the employee and the organization. It is

measured against factors such as job knowledge, quality and quantity of work output, as well as our core values.

Our Performance Appraisal Cycle runs from January to June and July to December annually.

The just concluded July-December Appraisal, took place in January 2015 with eligible Konganians who have worked

for a period of 3 months, inclusive. This implies that employee must have been in the system as at 30 September

2014.

After the performance appraisals, moderation sessions followed and all employees were moderated based on the

five (5) behavioral matrix: Consistently Exceeds Expectation, Exceeds Expectation, Meets Expectation, Needs

Improvement and Unsatisfactory. Eligible employees were moderated by their Line Manager and Director.

Based on management’s decision, the percentage (%) weight for the appraisal was 30%, while moderation was 70%.

At the end of the exercise, the average overall score formed the basis of the overall ratings as shown below:

Employees whose performance fall under K - Star Leavers category will be advised to exit

the organization due to unsatisfactory performance while employees whose performance fall

u n d e r K - S t a r Tro o p e r s c a t e g o r y w i l l b e p l a c e d o n a t h re e ( 3 ) m o n t h s

Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).  Other employees with good performance will be

rewarded based on approval and our K- Rock Stars will be recognized.

Kudos to all top performers and I encourage all Konganians to put in their best and aim for

high performance in the next appraisals.

MOTIVATIONALSTORY

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire,

and he told his boss of his plans to leave

and live a more leisurely life with his

wife. He would miss the paycheck, but

he needed to retire. They could get by. The

contractor was sorry to see such a good worker

go, and he asked the carpenter to build just one

more house as a personal favor. The carpen

ter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his

heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy

workmanship and used inferior materials. It was

an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.

When the carpenter finished his work, the

employer came to inspect the house. He handed

the front-door key to the carpenter. “This is your

house,” he said. “It is my gift to you.” The

carpenter was shocked! What a shame! If he had

only known he was building his own house, he

would have done it all so differently.

So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at

a time, often putting less than our best

into the building. Then with a shock we

realize we have to live in the house we

have built. If we could do it over, we’d do it

much differently. But we cannot go back…

You are the carpenter of your life. Each

day you hammer a nail, place a board, or

erect a wall. Your attitudes and the

choices you make today build your

“house” for tomorrow…

Build wisely!
