Kashan is a city in the province of Isfahan (estimated population 300,000). The Persian word Kashi, which translates into the English word "tile".

Built around 1840 by wealthy carpet merchant Seyyed Ja’far Tabatabei, the Khan-e Tabatabei is renowned for its intricate stone reliefs, fine stucco and wonderful mirror and stained-glass work. It covers 4730 sq metres, has 40 rooms and more than 200 doors.

Casa negustorului de covoare Tabatabei, construită pe la 1840, este renumită pentru reliefurile de piatră, lucrătura fină în stuc şi jocul oglinzilor. Are o suprafaţă de 4730 mp, 40 de camere şi peste 200 de uşi.

It consists of three sections: the andaruni (internal area), where family members lived; the biruni (external area), used for entertaining guests; and the khadameh (servants’ quarters). They are set around four courtyards, the largest of which boasts a fountain pool.

Cele trei sectoare principale sunt andaruni (interiorul unde trăiesc membrii familiei, biruni (partea exterioară unde sunt primiţi oaspeţii) şi khadameh (încăperile de serviciu). Toate sunt organizate în jurul a patru curţi interioare iar în cea mai mare este şi un bazin

Iranian Traditional Houses possess an innate system of protection; they all have enclosed gardens with maximum privacy, preventing any view into the house from the outside world. Hence residential architecture in Persia was designed in a way so as to provide maximum protection to the inhabitants during times of tension and danger, while furnishing a microcosm of tranquility that protected this inner “paradise garden ” .

Casele tradiţionale iraniene dispun de un sistem inerent de protecţie; ele posedă grădini închise cu ziduri groase pentru a asigura un grad maxim de intimitate, şi pentru a preveni orice privire indiscretă din afară. Arhitectura rezidenţială persană a oferit locatarilor o protecţie maximă în perioadele de tensiune şi pericol, asigurând totodată un microcosmos de linişte şi pace prin realizarea grădinilor numite „paradis”.

All traditional Persian houses have following sections: Hashti and Dalan-e-vorudi.Entering the doorway one steps into a small enclosed transitional space called Hashti (or hallway).Here one is forced to redirect ones steps away from the street and into the hallway,called Dalan e Vorudi.

Andaruni and Biruni are two main spaces in Iranian traditional houses. Andaruni, is in contrast to the Biruni. Andaruni is a space of the House in which the private quarters are established. In this part of the home women are free and they can stay without observing dressing codes. In other words Andaruni is a private part of the house. The only men let in the Andaruni are those directly related to the Lord of the house namely his sons and the Lord himself.

Andaruni şi Biruni sunt cele două zone tradiţionale ale locuinţei. În andaruni, spaţiul privat, femeile nu mai trebuie să respecte codul de îmbrăcăminte dar aici nici un bărbat nu poate intra în afară de soţ şi fii săi

“The traditional house all obey one fundamental rule of being planned around central open courtyard, which is either square, as an ideal courtyard, or rectangular with various sizes, depending on the socio-economic level of the family”(Heidari, 2000). In a courtyard you could find different trees, various flowers and also a pool. The courtyard give an opportunity to the residents of the home to carry on their activity like washing their clothes, enjoy nature water and good weather especially in summer.

Casa tradiţională respectă regula fundamentală de a fi construită în jurul unei curţi interioare patrate (care însă poate fi şi dreptunghiulară) a cărei mărime depinde de nivelul socio-economic al familiei. Acolo pot fi diverşi copaci sau flori şi un bazin. Ea asigură şi posibilitatea de a desfăşura diverse activităţi comune (spălatul rufelor, relaxarea în timpul verii, ..)

Most of the Iranian traditional houses have two kitchens both in Andaruni and Biruni. The kitchen in Andaruni is used just for the landlord and his relatives and the kitchen in Biruni is meant to serve guests and prepare foods for them. “For the preparation of large feasts the whole courtyard might be turned into a kitchen” (Heidari,2000).

Majoritatea locuinţelor au bucătărie şi în Andaruni şi în Biruni. Cea din Andaruni este folosită doar pentru stăpânul casei şi rudelor lui iar bucătăria din Biruni este destinată preparării hranei pentru oaspeţi.În cazul serbărilor mai mari întreaga curte poate fi transformată într-o bucătărie.

What is very important is architect has a special glance at guest in designing the house. They provide guests with a special space apart from spaces for close relatives of the land lord.In other words traditional house not only is designed for landlord to live in but also designed for guest to feel more comfortable.
